MEN’S BASKETBALL
Goldey-Beacom sophomore guard AJ Picard (Souderton) was named Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player of the Week for the week ending Dec. 4. Picard averaged 21.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game in a 1-1 week for the Lightning. He shot 15-of-25 (60 percent) from the field, including 7-of-14 (50 percent) from three-point range. Picard led all scorers with 23 points in a GBC loss to Shippensburg on Nov. 29 and then registered 19 points, five rebounds, seven assists and three steals in the Lightning’s CACC season-opening 72-71 win at home versus Holy Family. His NBA-range three-pointer as the shot clock expired broke a 68-all tie and gave GBC a 71-68 lead with nine seconds left in regulation, which ultimately led to the Lightning claiming their ninth straight regular season conference win at home.
Picard had nine points, seven rebounds and two assists in Goldey-Beacom’s 78-74 win over Dominican that included an improbable 21-point comeback on Saturday afternoon. With the win, GBC improved to 3-0 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. In Tuesday’s 52-49 win over University of the Sciences, Picard scored 11 points, which included a 2-of-3 shooting night from behind the arc. An 81 percent free throw shooter, Picard sank a pair of free throws in the final seconds of the game to give GBC its final margin of victory.
Freshman guard Whis Grant (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored a team-high 18 points in East Stroudsburg’s 86-71 win over California (Pa.) on Saturday. On Friday, Grant scored 11 points in East Stroudsburg’s 65-64 loss to No. 14 IUP.
Lorenzo Christmas (Norristown) scored 16 points, which included five treys, in Bloomsburg’s 62-58 win over Slippery Rock on Friday. He had four points in stretch that saw the Huskies open the game with a 17-9 run.
Julian Bond (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored six points in Lock Haven’s 66-43 loss to Millersville on Friday.
Junior Derek Brooks (North Penn) scored six points, contributed five assists and pulled down a career-high eight rebounds in Gettysburg’s 61-47 loss to 11th-ranked Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday. In last Saturday’s 64-41 win over Haverford, Brooks contributed a career-high seven assists, equaling the most by a Gettysburg player since Nov. 28 of last season. He also had six rebounds and five points. The Bullets, who had 20 assists in the game, had assists on 13 of 14 first-half field goals. On Nov. 30, Brooks tied a season-high with eight points and also had three steals in Gettysburg’s 52-49 loss to Johns Hopkins.
Cameron Prince (Hatboro-Horsham) scored nine points in Lebanon Valley’s 76-65 win over Lancaster Bible on Wednesday.
Saint Joseph’s sophomore CJ Aiken (Plymouth Whitemarsh) was the nation’s leader in blocked shots in the NCAA Statistics released Dec. 5. Aiken is averaging 5.0 per game with a total of 40 blocks in the Hawks’ eight games through Dec. 5. The 6-9 forward tied his career high with nine in St. Joe’s win over Drexel on Nov. 30. He also helped the Hawks set a new school record with a total of 16 blocks in that game, breaking a mark that existed since December 1987. Aiken is also averaging 12.1 points and 5.9 rebounds.
Aiken had 11 points and three blocks in St. Joe’s 80-71 upset of #19/17 Creighton on Saturday. It is the Hawks’ first win over a ranked team since 2008. On Wednesday, Aiken had five blocks in St. Joe’s 75-68 win over Boston University.
Junior Goran Dulac (Pennsbury) and sophomore Fran Rafferty (Upper Merion) both scored nine points in #12 Cabrini’s 83-49 home win over Baptist Bible College on Saturday. The win extended Cabrini’s home winning streak to 37.
Senior Dan DelConte (Wissahickon) earned MVP honors as Gwynedd-Mercy claimed the Harold J. Brodie Tournament championship with a 69-66 win over host Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday. DelConte finished with 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting. In Friday’s opening round 97-93 win over Utica, DelConte scored 23 of his 29 points in the second half to help Gwynedd-Mercy erase a nine-point halftime deficit. In Wednesday’s 101-91 loss to 12th-ranked Cabrini, DelConte scored 16 points. On Monday, DelConte scored 15 points, which included three from behind the arc, in Gwynedd’s 89-74 win over Penn State-Berks.
Junior guard Khalif Wyatt (Norristown) scored 13 points in Temple’s 78-67 win over Villanova in front of a sellout crowd at the Liacouras Center on Saturday. On Wednesday, Wyatt came off the bench to score 11 points in Temple’s 77-58 win at Toledo.
Sophomore point guard Jesse Krasna (Ursinus College) scored 13 points in Ursinus College’s 74-54 win over Dickinson on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 77-58 win over Haverford, Krasna had 15 points.
Guard Jim Connolly (Souderton) scored a season-high 21 points in Philadelphia University’s 88-68 win over Nyack on Saturday. Teammate Nick Christian (Bensalem) netted a season-best 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting. In Friday’s 67-61 loss to American International, Connolly contributed 11 points while Christian tied his career high with eight assists and also had a career-best six steals.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Addie Micir (Council Rock North) is playing professional basketball for Residence De Walferdange in the Luxembourg-Diekirch League. The recent Princeton grad is the team’s top scorer after 12 games, averaging 21.1 points a game. She is playing an average of 37.2 minutes and averaging 9.6 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 2.0 steals. Residence boasts a 7-5 record after 12 games.
Laura Harper (Cheltenham) is playing professional basketball in Turkey for Homend Antakya Belediyes. The 6-4 forward/center is the team’s top rebounder, averaging 9.3 a game through seven games. She is playing 31.6 minutes a game and is third in the team in scoring, averaging 10.1 points a game.
Freshman guard Devin Gold (Council Rock North) scored a career-high 16 points to go along with six rebounds, three assists and three steals in Caldwell College’s 80-68 win over Concordia on Thursday. Caldwell broke open a close game with a 23-4 run, sparked by 11 points from Gold.
Freshman Bree Benedict (Central Bucks West) scored 12 points in Penn State Abington’s 67-43 loss to Valley Forge Christian Academy on Wednesday. In Monday’s 88-68 loss to Arcadia, Benedict recorded her first double-double, contributing 26 points and 11 rebounds.
Redshirt senior forward Brittany McClain (Harry S. Truman) scored seven points and also had five assists in East Stroudsburg’s 46-45 loss to IUP on Friday.
Mashira Newman (Upper Dublin) scored a season-high 19 points – 15 in the second half – in Millersville’s 57-56 win over Lock Haven on Friday night. She also collected nine rebounds and seven assists. On Saturday, Newman was the lone Millersville player in double figures with 10 points in East Stroudsburg’s 71-43 loss to ninth-ranked Edinboro.
Sophomore Daniella Ciccarone (Quakertown) scored 12 points in Walsh University’s 104-40 win over Fisher College on Saturday.
Junior guard Ashley Rosario (Harry S. Truman) scored a team-high 12 points in Goldey-Beacom’s 66-52 loss to Dominican on Saturday afternoon. She also had a team-high seven rebounds. In Tuesday’s 65-63 win over University of the Sciences, Rosario buried a pair of free throws that proved to be the difference in the game. Rosario finished the game with seven points and five rebounds.
Senior Lauren Peters (Central Bucks West) made her season debut in Holy Family’s 72-53 win over Felician on Saturday. She contributed six points and handed out one assist off the bench.
Sophomore Brittany Sandone (Souderton) scored 11 points in Cabrini’s 79-45 win at Cedar Crest College on Saturday. Senior Jenn Casper (Council Rock North) added 10 points on 4-for-4 shooting from the floor and 2-for-2 from the free throw line. In Wednesday’s 63-57 loss at Albright, Sandone scored a team-high 13 points. She also had five assists and three steals.
Senior guard Alli Rosati (Central Bucks East) scored 15 points in Ursinus College’s 68-61 win over Dickinson on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 47-42 loss to Haverford, Rosati scored eight points, sinking two of her four shots from the floor as well as two of four from the foul line.
Senior Bryn Cotteta (Norristown) contributed 15 points, six rebounds and four assists in Gwynedd Mercy’s 68-59 win over DeSales on Saturday. Sophomore Taylour Alston (North Penn) pulled down nine rebounds and added five blocks, four points and three assists. In Tuesday’s 59-49 win over King’s, Cotteta had eight points, six assists and three steals. Alston added seven points, four rebounds and two blocked shots while sophomore Jordan Dominic (Pennridge) contributed a three-pointer as well as a pair of assists.
Ginny Edwards (Central Bucks South) scored 11 points in Wilkes College’s 68-57 loss to Elizabethtown on Saturday.
FIELD HOCKEY
Nicole Catanzaro Hughes (Upper Dublin) led her Cape Henlopen field hockey team to a 3-2 win over Delmar in the DIAA (Delaware) state championship this fall. It is the Lady Vikings’ first title since 1995 and the third in school history. Hughes – better known as ‘Coach Cat’ to her players – has been Cape Henlopen’s head coach for five years. In that time, the Lady Vikings have made the playoffs every season. After an 11-3-2 season in her first year, Hughes’ teams have gone 57-1-1 in the regular season the past four years.
FOOTBALL
Senior Matt Fitz (Central Bucks West) rushed for 49 yards and two touchdowns and also threw his first career touchdown pass on an option play in the second quarter of Lehigh’s 40-38 win over Towson last Saturday night in front of 11,196 at Johnny Unitas Stadium. The win propelled Lehigh into the NCAA quarterfinals where the Mountain Hawks fell to second-seeded North Dakota 24-0 in front of 18,111 at the Fargodome in Fargo, North Dakota. Fitz had 47 yards on the ground on 11 carries in his final collegiate game.
MEN’S SWIMMING
Shippensburg’s RJ Phiambolis (Pennridge) finished 38th in the 100 free with a time of 49.78 at the 2011 Zippy Invitational hosted by the University of Akron last Saturday.
Lycoming freshman TJ Guminski (Hatboro-Horsham) was part of Lycoming’s winning 200-yard medley relay in a dual meet with Albright on Saturday. Albright won the meet 149-113. Last Saturday, Guminski posted a personal best in the 400-yard individual medley at the Swarthmore Invitational, knocking 15 seconds off his best time to finish in sixth place. He added a ninth place finish with a time of 2:21.69.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Sophomore Alicia Detweiler (Pennridge) was part of Widener’s winning 200-yard freestyle relay that posted a time of 1:43.72 in the Pride’s 111-85 win over Washington (MD).
Shippensburg’s Sara Small (Abington) finished second in the 100 free with a time of 47.84 at the Zippy Invitational hosted by the University of Akron last Saturday. Colleen Stiles (North Penn) finished 35th in the 200 back with a time of 2:13.62. Teammates Alyssa Boeggerman (Neshaminy), Alayna Ryan (Abington) and Small finished 60th, 67th and 84th respectively in the 100 free with times of 55.71, 56.25 and 58.13.
Freshman Jan Ikeda (North Penn) was part of Lebanon Valley’s 200 medley relay that shaved nearly three-quarters of a second off their yard record, winning with a time of 1:58.46 in Saturday’s 143-58 win over King’s. Ikeda also captured the 100 fly (58.91) and the 200 free (2:02.52), coming close to one of Lebanon Valley’s oldest records (2:01.81 set in 1991).
Freshman Chelsea Kozior (Council Rock South) finished first in the 1000 free with a time of 11:31:35 in Ursinus College’s 117-73 win over Cabrini on Saturday.
Abby Mitchell (Council Rock North) finished over six seconds ahead of her closest competitor in the 200 butterfly, posting a time of 2:27.64 in Elizabethtown’s 144-118 loss to York on Saturday. She also won the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:06.66.
