BASEBALL
Pete Edgar (North Penn) was 1-for-2 with a run scored and teammate Brady West (North Penn) scored a pair of runs in Bloomsburg’s 14-1 win over Briarcliffe in seven innings at the Builder Invitational in Hampton, Va., on Sunday. Nick Donofry (Council Rock North) pitched a scoreless seventh inning and did not allow a hit while walking one and striking out one. In the Huskies 9-1 win over Apprentice School later in the day, West doubled and scored a run. In Saturday’s 16-5 loss to Lock Haven, freshman Bryce Mengel (North Penn) made his Huskies debut, starting on the mound and working four innings. He allowed only two earned runs while striking out three.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Kurtztown freshman Josh Johnson (Norristown) was selected as the PSAC Eastern Division Freshman of the Week for the third time this season. Johnson averaged 17 points, including a career-high 23 against Millersville, and eight rebounds last week and shot an impressive 15-for-18 (83.3 percent) from the field, moving him up to second in the PSAC in field goal percentage (60.4). In a win against Cheyney, he scored 10 of his 11 points in the first half and shot 5-for-5 from the field. He grabbed nine rebounds and had two blocks. Against Millersville, the first-year forward went 10-for-13 from the field, including a rim-rattling alley-oop dunk in the opening minutes. He sank all three free throw attempts. He was second on the team with seven boards and registered two assists, a block and a steal.
Johnson led the way with 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the field, which included a 7-for-7 start, in Kutztown’s 87-80 win over Shippensburg on Saturday. In 33 minutes, he grabbed four rebounds, had three blocks and three assists. He is averaging more than 20 points a game. In Wednesday’s 91-85 win over Lock Haven, Johnson notched a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. He connected on 7-of-10 shots.
Senior guard Chris Davis (Norristown) hit a big three and came up with a key steal to lead Alvernia to a 69-63 win over Messiah College Saturday. Davis played all 40 minutes and handed out seven assists with just one turnover. He pulled to within four assists of tying Chris Alba’s single-season record of 170 helpers. The win makes Alvernia the number two seed in the Commonwealth Championships.
Junior Travis Bryan (Hatboro-Horsham) contributed 11 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots in DeSales University’s 51-47 win over Wilkes on Tuesday.
Junior guard Sean Brooks (North Penn) had a game-best 16 points and five assists in Washington College’s 64-57 loss to Johns Hopkins on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 72-70 loss to Swarthmore, Brooks had 10 points and handed out five assists.
Zach Sibel (Pennsbury) had 10 points off the bench in Delaware Valley’s 76-68 loss to Manhattanville College on Tuesday.
Senior Dalton Pepper (Pennsbury) scored 20 points, which included four three-pointers, in Temple’s 82-79 loss in overtime to at #22/24 Memphis on Sunday. In Thursday’s 68-55 loss to #21/21 UConn, Pepper scored 11 points and grabbed seven boards. In last Sunday’s 71-64 win over #23 SMU, Pepper scored a game-high 24 points and was 6-of-6 at the line.
Senior guard Nick Christian (Bensalem) recorded a double-double in Philadelphia University’s 80-62 win over Concordia (N.Y.) on Saturday’s Senior Day, contributing 12 points, 12 rebounds and six assists. In Tuesday’s 72-65 loss to the University of Sciences, he had 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Junior Marcus Badger (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored 10 points in No. 20 Randolph-Macon’s 68-62 win over Washington & Lee on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 90-67 win over Hampden-Sydney, Badger had nine points
and four steals.
Senior post Brett Roseboro (Quakertown) scored a career-high 20 points in UMBC’s 72-53 loss to Stony brook on Wednesday. The Quakertown grad hit 8-of-15 shots from the floor, added a team-best nine rebounds and recorded UMBC’s lone two blocks of the game.
Senior Connor Poston (Hatboro-Horsham) contributed 13 points and eight rebounds in his final collegiate game in Gettysburg’s 55-47 win over McDaniel on Saturday. A team captain, Poston started 24 games, averaging nine points a game. He closed the year with a 60 percent
field goal percentage, tops on the team and in the conference and fifth in Gettysburg history. He also averaged 6.1 rebounds per game, also a team high and eighth in the conference. His 4.3 defensive rebounds per game places him 19th in Gettysburg history. His 2.2 offensive rebounds per game rank Poston seventh in Gettysburg history. His 55 offensive rebounds this season ranked him sixth in Gettysbury history and seventh in the conference. He averaged 1.5 steals and 1.2 turnovers per game.
Lorenzo Christmas (Norristown) scored 15 points in Bloomsburg’s come-from-behind 89-80 win over Mansfield on Saturday.
Cabrini senior Fran Rafferty (Upper Merion) was named to the all-CSAC First Team. The Upper Merion grad averaged 14.5 points and 4.7 rebounds per game and became one of the nation’s best three-point shooters this season. Rafferty’s 0.477 three-point shooting percentage ranks among the 10 best in the country. Rafferty, who joined Cabrini’s 1,000 Point Club to end the 2012-13 season, currently stands fifth on the program’s all-time scoring list with 1,351 points.
Rafferty scored 11 points, including a pair of treys, in Cabrini’s 77-66 win over Immaculata on Thursday. With the win, the No. 6 Cavaliers improved to 23-1 overall and 17-1 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference.
Junior Mike Marvin (Hatboro-Horsham) posted 10 points, six rebounds and an assist in Penn State Abington’s 98-91 loss to Morrisville State on Saturday. In Friday’s 89-86 win over Cazenovia College, Marvin contributed 20 points and 12 rebounds for his 20th double-double of the year. In the final home game of his career Tuesday, Marvin scored 20 points on 9-of-10 shooting and pulled in 10 rebounds in Penn State Abington’s 72-71 loss to Lancaster Bible College.
Sophomore Ryan Arcidiacono (Neshaminy) contributed 12 points, three rebounds and three assists in 37 minutes of action in No. 9 Villanova’s 57-54 overtime win over St. John’s in front of 17,124 at the Wells Fargo Center on Saturday. The win snapped the Red Storm’s six-game winning streak and improved the Wildcats’ record to 24-3 overall (12-2 in the BIG EAST). In Tuesday’s 82-79 win over Providence in double overtime, Arcidiacono scored 21 points, including a layup with 3.6 seconds to go to help lead the Wildcats to the win.
Ursinus senior guard Jesse Krasna (Pennsbury) was named the Centennial Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending Feb. 16. The Pennsbury grad averaged 15.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists while shooting 66.7 percent from the floor in leading the Bears to a 2-0 week. He had 18 points, five rebounds, five assists and a pair of steals in the 61-56 comeback win against Franklin & Marshall. He added 13 points with four assists in an 89-76 win over Washington College.
Krasna surpassed the 1,000-point milestone in Ursinus College’s 67-65 loss to Muhlenberg on Saturday. The Pennsbury grad, who finished the game with 18 points, connected on the historic basket with 6:41 remaining in the second half. Teammate Mark Wonderling (Souderton) had three assists. In Wednesday’s 86-71 win over Haverford, Krasna scored 17 points.
Julian Bond (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored seven points in Lock Haven’s 91-85 win over Kutztown on Wednesday.
Senior Kenny Gula (Quakertown) scored 10 points and pulled down four rebounds in Moravian’s 78-71 win over The Catholic University on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 67-61 loss to No. 25 Scranton, Gula scored 10 points.
Luke Moyer (Souderton) scored 12 points in Campbell University’s 79-59 loss to Liberty on Saturday.
Gwynedd Mercy freshman Arron Goodman (Council Rock North) was named to the Colonial States Athletic Conference second team. The Rock North grad was having an outstanding season before an injury on Jan. 15 cut short his first full season. He averaged 19.9 points and 10 rebounds in 15 games while shooting over 50 percent from the field. He collected nine double-doubles and posted two 30-point plus games.
Julian Hyden (Bensalem) led all scorers with a career-high 22 points in Gwynedd Mercy’s 94-77 win over Immaculata on Wednesday. The sophomore shot 7-of-9 from the field, connecting on three field goals from beyond the arc.
Junior guard Whis Grant (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored 24 points, including a huge step-back three-pointer with 26.4 seconds left, in No. 5 East Stroudsburg’s 82-73 win at Cheyney on Saturday. The win – the 24th of the season – tied a school record. Grant is seventh at ESU with 1,363 career points. Grant scored 20-plus points for the 26th time in his career. ESU is 21-5 when he hits the 20-point mark. He moved into second at ESU with 69 three-pointers this season, seven from the school record of 76. He also ranks second in career three-pointers with 191.
Wesley Brooks (North Penn) scored 11 points and pulled down five rebounds in McDaniel’s 67-50 loss to Johns Hopkins on Wednesday. In Saturday’s 55-47 loss to McDaniel, Brooks had seven points, four rebounds and two steals.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Sophomore Ciara ‘CC’ Andrews (Cheltenham) scored a team-high 15 points in St. Joseph’s 82-56 loss to Dayton on Sunday afternoon. The sophomore guard scored a career high 21 points in St. Joe’s 61-59 win over Duquesne on Tuesday. Andrews finished 9-of-15 from the floor, including 1-of-1 from three-point range and 2-of-3 from the foul line to go along with six rebounds and two assists.
Freshman Tyra Roberts (Bensalem) finished with a game high 16 points and a career-high 16 rebounds in Alvernia’s 66-63 overtime loss to Hood College on Tuesday.
Natasha Matthews (Norristown) scored 15 of her game-high 22 points in the second half in Gwynedd Mercy’s 85-64 win over Immaculata on Wednesday. She was 7-of-12 from the floor and 8-of-10 from the free throw line. Senior guard Jordan Dominic (Pennridge) grabbed a team-high six rebounds. In Monday’s 59-56 overtime loss to Cabrini, Matthews had 15 points and 11 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season while adding three blocks.
Shannon Barlow (Neshaminy) had 10 points in Delaware Valley’s 76-65 loss to Manhattanville on Tuesday.
Shayla Felder (Cheltenham) scored 17 points – including 13 in the first half – of Chestnut Hill’s 75-61 win over Georgian Court on Wednesday. She also had two rebounds and four assists.
Kelsey Ryan (Neshaminy) scored eight points in Lock Haven’s 75-62 loss to Millersville on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 70-63 win over Kutztown, Ryan had 12 points.
Sophomore Stephanie Knauer (North Penn) led all players with 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting and pulled down 13 rebounds in Shippensburg’s 81-52 win at Kutztown on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 82-72 win over Mansfield, Knauer scored 14 points and also had six boards and two assists.
Sarah Kiely (Council Rock North) scored nine points and pulled down four rebounds in American University’s 69-44 win over Boston University on Wednesday. Freshman Lauren Crisler (North Penn) contributed five points and three rebounds off the bench.
Senior Sam Simononis (Pennridge) led four players in double figures with a game-high 13 points in Vermont’s 74-48 win over Binghamton on Saturday.
Sophomore forward Carley Kendall (Souderton) contributed nine points off the bench in Washington College’s 80-67 loss to Swarthmore on Wednesday.
Colleen Hinde (Wissahickon) led five players in double figures with 17 points in Neumann University’s 80-45 win over Baptist Bible College on Wednesday.
Senior Brittany Sandone (Souderton) contributed 16 points and five rebounds in Cabrini’s 59-56 overtime win over Gwynedd Mercy on Monday.
Point guard Amie Eppolito (Pennsbury) contributed 14 points, four assists and three rebounds in Cairn University’s 90-40 loss to Rosemont on Thursday.
Junior Jessica Schmidt (Abington) tallied eight points and 10 rebounds in Penn State Abington’s 68-59 loss to Cazenovia on Friday.
Senior Daniella Ciccarone (Quakertown) hit 17-of-18 free throws en route to a career high 29 points in St. Thomas University’s 84-68 win over Northwood on Wednesday night. She also pulled down eight rebounds, including five offensive boards. Seventeen of her 29 points came in the second half as she went 4-of-8 from the field and hit 9-of-10 free throws. The win clinched the regular season Sun Conference championship.
Sophomore guard Helena Gemmell (Council Rock North) scored eight points in East Stroudsburg’s 72-65 win at Cheyney on Saturday.
FIELD HOCKEY
The Villanova Wildcats recently held their athletic banquet, and Madison Harding (Central Bucks South) was honored with an All-Big East selection and team Most Valuable Player, and she was named team captain for the 2014 season.
SOFTBALL
Binghamton freshman Bridget Hunt (Harry S Truman) collected her first collegiate hit against a University of Tennessee squad that is ranked number one in the country. Hunt hit her first collegiate home run against Wright State University. The Truman grad was 6-for-14 (.429) for the Bearcats at the University of South Florida Tournament last weekend.
University of South Florida junior D’Anna Devine (Pennsbury) is hitting .391 after 13 games.
Sophomore Valerie Sadowl (Hatboro-Horsham) delivered a two-run double in the fifth inning to knot the score 2-2, but the University of Connecticut fell to Illinois State 3-2 in eight innings in the final game of the Lead-Off Classic in Clearwater, Fla., on Sunday. The Hatboro grad batted .615 for the weekend. In Saturday's 8-7 loss to UMass, Sadowl was 3-for-3. Rookie catcher Domonique Pinto (Council Rock North) recorded her first RBI's in a Husky uniform, logging a pair to lead the Huskie's offense.
MEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
Albright junior Rick Sutton (Hatboro-Horsham) won the 1650 free at last Sunday’s Middle Atlantic Conference championship, swimming an NCAA B cut of 16:10.63. He lowered his own school, MAC championship record and 1000 free en route to the school mark. In the 200 back, senior Stephen Thomas (William Tennent) was fourth with a time of 1:56.97. Sam Rosenthal (Central Bucks East) was eighth in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:19.48. Richard Edwards (Pennsbury) tied for sixth place in the 100 free with a time of 48.34. The program clinched its fourth MAC title. Last Saturday, Thomas was fifth in the 100 back (53.71) while Sutton was third in the 200 free (1:44.04). Rosenthal placed third in the 400 IM with a time of 4:18.88, and Edwards finished 12th in the 100 breast (1:02.86). Last Friday, Edwards finished 12th in the 50 free (22.35), and Thomas was third in the 200 IM (1:57.89) while Rosenthal was 10th (2:01.23).
Gettysburg junior Ashton Leyens (Upper Dublin) took the silver in the 200 freestyle with an NCAA B cut time of 1:40.77 at the Centennial Conference Championships on Saturday. Senior Sean Staerk (Abington) was part of the first place 800 freestyle relay with a B-cut, meet record and pool record time of 6:50.26. On Friday, Leyens was part of the first place 200 free relay that touched the wall in a B-cut and pool record time of 1:22.34. He also placed ninth overall in the 200 IM (1:56.22). Staerk was part of the ‘B’ 200 free relay team that won the consolation final to finish ninth with a time of 1:26.06, a time that would have placed them third in the championship final.
La Salle’s Dave Derr (Upper Dublin) broke a school record in the 200-yard backstroke at the Atlantic 10 Championships on Saturday, posting a 1:47.76 in the consolation finals. He also was part of the 400 medley relay that finished fifth with a time of 3:19.80. The time broke a 24-year-old school mark of 3:21.58 by nearly two full seconds. Derr was part of the 400 free relay that finished seventh with a time of 3:04.32. CJ Gimpel (Central Bucks South) finished third in the finals of the 1-meter diving with a score of 248.80. On the 3-meter board, Gimpel notched La Salle’s top score with a 242.60 to finish fourth.
IUP’s Andrew Richey (William Tennent) finished fifth in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.46 at the 2014 PSAC Swimming Championships on Thursday.
Lycoming junior TJ Guminski (Hatboro-Horsham) won the consolation final and place ninth overall in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:16.45 at the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships last Sunday, dropping five seconds off his preliminary time.
Ursinus freshmen Spencer Collopy (North Penn) and Dylan Cooper (William Tennent) were part of the 200 medley relay team that finished 12th in the B final of the 2014 Centennial Conference Championships on Saturday with a time of 1:38.57.
Bloomsburg’s Tyler Washington (Central Bucks West) finished 13th in the ‘B’ final in the 100 breast with a time of 59.01. On Friday, Mark DiLemmo (Central Bucks East) finished ninth in the 100 fly with a time of 51.26, and teammate Matt Ortlieb (North Penn) was 12th with a time of 52.11. Washington was part of the fourth place 400 medley relay that posted a time of 3:27.38, the third best mark in school history. On Thursday, DiLemmo finished 14th in the 1000 free with a time of 9:48.92. In the ‘B’ final of the 50 free, Pat Stasio (Hatboro-Horsham) finished 11th with a time of 21.46. Ortlieb was part of the 200 medley relay that broke the school record with a time of 1:33.91, breaking the mark of 1:34.33.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
Lycoming freshman Jess Wimmer (Souderton) placed seventh in the 200 breaststroke (2:35.11) at the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships last Sunday.
Amanda Thomas (William Tennent) was part of the 800 free relay that finished in 7:52.45 to break the previous school record by almost six seconds at Saturday’s PSAC Championships. The group placed eighth in the event. On Friday, Thomas was part of the record-breaking 200 free relay that finished ninth and posted a time of 1:38.16. She also finished 27th in the 200 free with a time of 1:57.89. On Thursday, Thomas competed in the 200 IM and finished one spot higher than her seed. She touched the wall in 2:14.85, nearly a second faster than her fastest time this season, and placed 29th.
University of Pittsburgh freshman Rachel Saunders (Central Bucks West) posted a season high 294.90 points to place 16th on the 3M board at the ACC Championships on Friday. The previous high in the Panthers 3M was also made by Saunders (276.90) at Virginia earlier this month. The West grad had a season high of 223.20 on the platform. Saunders also had a top 20 finish in the 1M diving competition, posting a 260.20. Saunders dominated the boards for Pitt during her rookie season. Entering the ACC Championships, she owned the top three scores in the 1M, 3M and the platform. The freshman diver scored 316.15 at the Pitt Invitational in late November and recorded a 336.45 at Virginia earlier this month.
Gettysburg senior Ali Roth (Central Bucks West) finished sixth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:00.22 at the Centennial Conference Championships on Saturday. On Friday, Roth finished fourth in the 50 free with a tie of 24.47.
Emily Houser (Upper Dublin) was part of Dickinson’s record-breaking 400 medley relay that clocked a time of 4:00.18. She also was part of the 200 medley relay that finished fifth at the 2014 Centennial Conference Championships with a school record time of 1:49.95. She finished sixth in the 100 backstroke (59.92).
Franklin & Marshall’s Taylor Mateja (Upper Merion) advanced to the consolations of the Centennial Conference Championships after posting the ninth fastest time in the 200 backstroke (2:11.52). She also advanced to the consolations in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:01.18. Mateja was part of the 200 free relay that finished first with a time of 1:37.55, which was an F&M school record. She also was part of the 200 medley relay that finished sixth with a time of 1:51.04. Mateja advanced to the consolations with a time of 25.32 in the 500 free.
Shippensburg sophomore Carolyn Meier (Upper Dublin) broke a 10-year-old school record in the morning session of the 200 freestyle by posting a preliminary time of 1:51.76, prefacing a sixth place finish in the finals session with a time of 1:52.40 at the 2014 PSAC Championships on Friday. Senior Colleen Stiles (North Penn) was part of the 200 medley relay that finished 10th with a time of 4:04.62. On Saturday, Stiles recorded a personal best in the 100 backstroke with a time of 59.54 to finish 11th overall. Meier and Stiles were part of the fifth place 800 free relay that posted a time of 7:40.37. Junior Devon Perugini (Neshaminy) recorded a PR of 1:01.19 in the 100 back and came within two spots of reaching the ‘B’ group finals. On Thursday, Meier posted a PR in the 200 IM with a time of 2:08.18, an improvement of more than two full seconds of her previous PR (2:10.46). She finished 12th in the event and is now in second place on Shippensburg’s all-time list for the event. Just a few minutes after her 200 IM, Meier came back and nearly won the consolation final of the 50 free, placing 10th in 24.20 seconds. Her time marks an improvement of 0.15 seconds and slots her sixth on the all-time SU list for the event. Stiles was part of the 200 medley relay that finished ninth with a time of 1:51.37. In the 50 free, Perugini posted a time of 25.16 for a season-best.
Lebanon Valley’s Jan Ikeda (North Penn) won the MAC 200-fly championship for the second time in her career to cap a memorable weekend at the MAC Championships last Sunday. It was her second career title in the 200 fly and fourth overall as she blew away the field with a time of 2:08.84, dropping three seconds from her preliminary time and smashing her program record of 2:10.44 set during her championship swim in 2012. Ikeda also owns a silver medal in the event from 2013 and won the 100 fly a day earlier to pull the double for the second tie in three years.
Ursinus junior Chelsea Kozior (Council Rock South) was part of the winning 800 free relay team that broke the pool, conference and championship records with a time of 7:41.35 at the 2014 Centennial Conference Championships on Saturday. The foursome who comprised the team held the record from last season and beat the old record by just under eight seconds in winning the event. In the ‘B’ final of the 200 free, freshman Marisa Ferrari (Central Bucks East) finished 13th with a time of 2:00.07. On Friday, Kozior was part of the 200 free relay that finished third with a time of 1:37.94. In the ‘B’ final, Ferrari was part of the 200 free relay that finished 10th with a time of 1:41.40.
Western Reserve University senior co-captain Maggie Dillione (Council Rock North) broke her own school record in the 100 butterfly at the 2014 University Athletic Association Invitational last Sunday. Dillione swam a 55.95 during morning prelims and then bettered her mark during the finals with a time of 55.64. Dillione’s previous mark of 56.14 came back in December. While the season comes to an end for most of the team, Dillione, who is ranked first in the nation in the 200 butterfly, will compete at the NCAA Championship meet for the second season in a row. She was a two-time All-American at the event last season.
Brown University’s Kate Dillione (Council Rock North) was the third of five Bears to gain berths in the finals at the Ivy League Championships as she placed sixth overall in the 100 freestyle with a time of 50.16. She bested the pool record in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:48.61, good for fifth place in the finals.
Bloomsburg’s Alex Wheatley (Upper Dublin) finished fourth in the 100 back with a time of 58.01 at the 2014 PSAC Championships. She was part of the fifth place 400 medley relay that posted a time of 3:52.93 and the 200 medley relay that finished seventh with a time of 1:48.02.
WRESTLING
Joe Stolfi (Souderton) earned a 12-2 major decision at 285 in Bucknell’s 23-10 win at Binghamton on Friday night.
Ursinus junior Richard Jasinski (Pennridge) won the championship at 157 at the Centennial Conference Championships on Saturday, earning a 10-2 major decision over Alex Niemann of W&L and then blanking Ben Stalling of Merchant Marine 5-0 in the semis. Ursinus won its second consecutive team title.
Matt Martoccio (Council Rock South) earned a 6-5 decision at 157 in Kutztown’s 30-15 win over Shippensburg on Monday. In Tuesday’s night’s 27-20 loss to East Stroudsburg, Martoccio earned a pin at the 2:48 mark.
Matt Rappo (Council Rock South) won by fall in 3:14 at 141 in Bloomsburg’s 28-12 win over Binghamton on Saturday.
