BASEBALL
Robbie Zinsmeister (North Penn)
kicked off IUP’s 2013 campaign in style with a leadoff homer to left in the top of the first to spark the Crimson Hawks to a 7-5 win over Concord on Saturday.  Zinsmeister finished the day 3-for-4 with two RBIs, three runs scored and the game’s lone home run. Teammate Dylan Tice (Pennridge) contributed a two-run double and was 3-for-3 on the day with a run scored. Jared Weed (Council Rock North) allowed just one hit in a scoreless inning of relief.

Jeremy McAlack (Council Rock North) was 2-for-2 in Cairns University’s 11-3 loss to Eastern Mennonite University on Saturday.

Matt Albaugh (North Penn) went 2-for-3 with a double, walk and an RBI in Kutztown’s 5-2 win over The Apprentice School on Friday.

Sophomore Jared Schaffer (Pennridge) Pitched a perfect ninth inning in Bloomsburg’s 6-1 win over Briarcliffe College on Friday.

Senior reliever Eric Ruth (North Penn) pitched 2.1 scoreless innings of relief, striking out three en route to his first save of the season in Winthrop’s 3-2 win over Delaware State on Thursday.

Starting pitcher Mike Bradstreet (North Penn) turned in six quality innings in Rhode Island’s 8-1 loss to No. 8 University of Mississippi on Friday. From the second through the seventh, Bradstreet allowed just three runs on seven hits.

Dan Hinchcliff (North Penn) had an infield single and scored a run in Catholic University’s 8-3 win over Muhlenberg on Sunday.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
Penn State Abington sophomore forward Mike Marvin (Hatboro-Horsham) was selected by the North Eastern Athletic Conference coaches as the 2012 NEAC Player of the Year. He also was a first team pick. Marvin leads the conference in scoring (18.9 PPG) and rebounding (12.6 RPG) this season.  He also ranks third in the nation in rebounding and is fifth with 16 double-doubles. This season, Marvin scored 20 or more points 11 times.
Marvin collected another double-double in Penn State Abington’s 79-77 loss to Penn State Harrisburg in the opening round of the NEAC men’s basketball championship tournament on Tuesday. The Nittany Lions closed out their season with a 12-14 record, three victories better than they achieved last season.
Jaylen Bond (Plymouth Whitemarsh) contributed six points, four rebounds and one steal off the bench in the University of Texas 81-69 loss to Kansas State on Saturday.

Freshman Ryan Connolly (Souderton) scored seven points and pulled down six rebounds in Kutztown’s 103-79 loss to Cheyney on Wednesday. In Monday’s 66-59 loss to Millersville, Connolly scored 16 points. He scored 12 of his 16 in the first half and finished the game 6-of-9 from the floor and 4-of-6 from long range. He added six rebounds and three steals.

Sophomore guard Whis Grant (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored 22 points in 10th-ranked East Stroudsburg’s 83-76 loss to West Chester on Saturday. It was his ninth 20-point game of the season and 14th of his career. He leads the Warriors and is sixth in the PSAC with 17.7 points per game. In Wednesday’s 79-69 loss to Millersville, Grant scored 18 points.

Michael Guldin (Pennridge) scored the eventual game-winning shots with 20.8 seconds left on an off-balance leaner, propelling DeSales University to a 59-47 win over FDU-Florham in the Freedom Conference semifinals on Wednesday night. He finished the night with seven points, three assists and two steals. In Saturday’s 77-72 loss to Delaware Valley in the Freedom Conference championship game, Guldin finished with six points, three assists, no turnovers and five steals.

Temple University senior guard Khalif Wyatt (Norristown) was named Philadelphia Big 5 Co-Player of the Week for the week ending Feb. 17. Wyatt, the Atlantic 10 Conference’s leading scorer (19.8 ppg), averaged 29.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 3.0 steals in a 1-1 week for the Owls. He scored a career-high 35 points in an 84-83 loss to Duquesne while making 15-of-15 from the foul line. In an 83-82 win at UMass, he scored a game-high 24 points, hitting 6-of-11 from three-point range. He also dished out three assists. For the year, Wyatt has been game-high scorer 13 times and has averaged 25.2 points over the last 11 outings.
Wyatt contributed 17 points and four assists in Temple’s 82-74 win over La Salle in front of a soldout Liacouras Center on Thursday night.

Alvernia junior Chris Davis (Norristown) received All-Commonwealth Conference honorable mention recognition. He averages 35 minutes on the floor and runs the show offensively with 129 assists. Davis, whose mother Tina Weaver was diagnosed with Stage III colon cancer in 2009, was featured recently in an article in the Reading Eagle on Feb. 18. Davis contributed eight points and five rebounds in top-seeded Alvernia’s 69-66 come-from-behind win over fourth-seeded Arcadia in Wednesday’s Commonwealth Conference semifinal game. In Alvernia’s 78-69 win over Lycoming College in Saturday’s title game, Davis contributed seven points and seven rebounds. It is the second Commonwealth Conference title for Alvernia.

Lorenzo Christmas (Norristown) scored a career-high 34 points in Bloomsburg’s 85-80 overtime win over Kutztown on Saturday. He scored 25 of his points in the second half and overtime and scored the last five points of the game for the Huskies. Christmas finished the day with a double-double, scoring 34 points and grabbing 10 rebounds while going 15-of-18 from the foul line. In Wednesday’s 73-66 loss to Mansfield, Christmas scored 15 points.

Senior Derek Brooks (North Penn) scored 12 points in his final collegiate game in Gettysburg’s 45-43 loss to Muhlenberg in the first round of the Centennial Conference men’s basketball tournament Wednesday.

Junior guard Nick Christian (Bensalem) had 10 points and tied a season-high with 12 rebounds for his third double-double of the season in Philadelphia University’s 65-63 loss to Wilmington (Del.) on Saturday. Senior guard Jim Connolly (Souderton) scored 13 points.

Sam Pygatt (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored eight points in Shippensburg’s 79-70 loss to West Chester on Wednesday.

Junior Fran Rafferty (Upper Merion) was named the Most Valuable Player in Cabrini College’s 90-74 win over Keystone College in Friday night’s Colonial States Athletic Conference championship game. The Upper Merion grad led the Blue and White with 19 points and 10 rebounds. The CSAC title was the fourth consecutive for Cabrini and 12th in program history. The Cavaliers improved to 22-5 overall with their 11th consecutive win. By virtue of winning the conference title, the Cavaliers have secured their fourth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament and the 11th in program history. In Tuesday’s 90-77 conference semifinal win over Neumann University, Rafferty connected on 4-of-4 from three-point range, finishing with 17 points and seven rebounds. Senior Goran Dulac (Pennsbury) had four points and nine rebounds, including seven on the offensive side.

CJ Aiken (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored 13 points in St. Joseph University’s 71-59 win over George Washington in Atlantic 10 action on Saturday.

Freshman Ryan Arcidiacono (Neshaminy) scored 11 points in Villanova’s 60-56 win over No. 17 Marquette on Saturday. In Monday’s 71-63 come-from-behind win over Rutgers, Arcidiacono scored 14 points.

Andrew Stress (Council Rock North) scored nine points in FDU-Florham’s 59-47 loss to DeSales University in the Freedom Conference semifinals on Wednesday night.

AJ Picard (Souderton) contributed 14 points, four rebounds and three assists in Goldey-Beacom’s 84-61 loss to Holy Family on Saturday. In Tuesday’s 77-66 loss to Philadelphia University, Picard scored a team-high 25 points with four rebounds and three assists. He made 10-of-11 shots from the floor, including a 4-for-5 effort from three-point range, en route to posting his sixth 20-point performance of the season.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Sarah Kiely (Council Rock North)
scored nine points and pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds in American University’s 61-46 loss to Army on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 52-42 loss to Navy, Kiely had six points and five rebounds.

Senior Ashley Rosario (Harry S Truman) contributed 11 points and five rebounds in Goldey-Beacom’s 69-58 loss to No. 6 Holy Family on Saturday. The loss snapped the Lightning’s school record nine-game winning streak. In Tuesday’s 68-57 win over Philadelphia University, Rosario contributed six points and two rebounds.

Colleen Hinde (Wissahickon) scored 10 points in Neumann University’s 74-64 loss to Marywood University on Monday night in a Colonial States Athletic Conference first round game.

Shippensburg freshman Stephanie Knauer (North Penn) was named the PSAC Eastern Division Women’s Basketball Freshman of the Week for the week ending Feb. 18. It was the sixth time this season she has received his honor. Knauer averaged 13.5 points and nine rebounds per game as the Raiders defeated East Stroudsburg but fell to first place Bloomsburg. For the week, Knauer shot 91 percent from the floor (10-of-11). Over her last four games, Knauer was 21-of-23 from the field (91.3 percent) while averaging 13.0 points and eight rebounds per game. In the win over ESU, Knauer led all players with 22 points and 14 rebounds for her 10th double-double of the year. She shot 9-of-10 from the floor, which included a make on her first three-point attempt of the season, and was 3-for-3 at the foul line. In the loss to Bloomsburg, Knauer had five points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Knauer contributed 15 points and four rebounds on 5-of-7 shooting from the field and a 5-of-6 effort at the charity stripe in Shippensburg’s 80-62 win over Cheyney on Saturday.

Kelsey Ryan (Neshaminy) scored seven points and pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds in Lock Haven’s 87-77 loss to Clarion on Wednesday. She also had four assists, two blocks and one steal.

Redshirt senior point guard Mashira Newman (Upper Dublin) filled out the stat sheet with 14 points, nine assists, six rebounds, six steals and a block in Millersville’s 90-59 win over Mansfield on Saturday. She is now just five blocks from becoming the first women’s player in program history to rank in the top 10 in all-time points, assists, steals and blocks. In Wednesday’s 76-47 win over East Stroudsburg, Newman finished with 19 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and six steals.

Cabrini junior Brittany Sandone (Souderton) was named to the Colonial States Athletic Conference first team. This marks the third All-CSAC honor for Sandone, who received honorable mention as a freshman and second team accolades last season. The junior leads the league from the free throw line and is ranked among the nation’s top 25 shooters, connecting on 85.98 percent of her attempts. Sandone’s 2.2 three-pointers made per game also led the league while her 0.360 three-point percentage ranked third. The junior reached the 15-point mark 13 times, surpassing 20 on six occasions, including a season-high 23 points against Kenyon College.Sandone scored a game-high 14 points in Cabrini College’s 49-38 win over Gwynedd-Mercy College in Saturday’s Colonial States Athletic Conference championship game. It is Cabrini’s sixth CSAC title and ensures the team its seventh appearance in the NCAA Tournament. In Wednesday’s 72-62 win over Keystone College in a CSAC semifinal game, Sandone scored 15 points.

Daniella Ciccarone (Quakertown) registered a double-double in 11th-ranked St. Thomas University’s 64-61 loss to Webber International on Friday, collecting 16 points and 10 rebounds while dishing out out five assists. The loss snapped a 15-game winning streak for St. Thomas.

Freshman Alex Wheatley (Council Rock South) contributed five points and seven rebounds off the bench in Princeton’s 98-36 win over Columbia on Friday. In Saturday’s 59-34 win over Cornell, Wheatley was 3-for-3 from the field for six points. She also had three rebounds and two blocked shots.

Calla Miller (Central Bucks South) contributed 10 points, three assists and three steals in Haverford’s 64-59 loss to Johns Hopkins on Wednesday.

Gwynedd-Mercy junior Natasha Matthews (Norristown) received Colonial States Athletic Conference all-conference honorable mention recognition. Matthews is second on the squad in scoring (12.2 ppg) and rebounding (7.6 rpg) and has been in the starting lineup since the fifth game of the season. In those 19 starts since, she has scored just under 14 points a game. Matthew exploded for a career-high 32 points in a win at Immaculata on Jan. 14. She has registered five double-doubles and has picked up weekly accolades from the CSAC four times.
Matthews was chosen the ECAC South Region Co-Player of the Week for the week ending Feb. 17 and was also selected the CSAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for that same week. The Norristown grad helped the Griffins secure the number two seed in the CSAC Championship Tournament, averaging 18.5 points and 12.0 rebounds in two wins. In a win over Neumann, Matthews scored 12 points on 6-for-9 shooting while grabbing 10 rebounds. In a battle for second place in the conference, she posted game-highs of 25 points and 14 rebounds, connecting on 9-of-12 attempts from the field and a perfect 7-for-7 at the foul line.

Gwynedd-Mercy junior Jordan Dominic (Pennridge) was named to the CSAC All-Sportsmanship Team.

Dominic scored 14 points while Matthews added nine points and seven rebounds in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 68-56 win over Marywood in Wednesday’s CSAC semifinal game.

MEN’S LACROSSE
Senior Heath Kupecky (Upper Merion) scored a pair of goals in Messiah College’s 11-4 loss to No. 16 Gettysburg on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Garret Rosiek (Wissahickon) is one of the top returning players on an Aurora University squad that last year compiled a 13-4 overall record and an 8-1 record in the Mideast Lacrosse Conference as only a second-year program. This year the team is looking to make history by claiming the conference title for the first time. Rosiek was the runner-up for the Spartan scoring title in 2012 with 22 assists and 22 goals. He also racked up 39 ground balls on the year and was an honorable mention all-conference selection.

SOFTBALL
Mary Ward (North Penn)
had a double, two RBIs and two runs scored in IUP’s 11-10 win over Glenville State last Friday in its season opener.

MEN’S SWIMMING
Gettysburg sophomore Ashton Levens (Upper Dublin) placed sixth in the 50 free (21.41) on day one of the Centennial Conference Championships on Friday at Franklin & Marshall College. On Saturday, he was part of the winning men’s 800-free relay that broke the Centennial Conference and CC meet record that a Gettysburg team set last season, touching the wall first in an NCAA Division III championship qualifying ‘B’ cut time of 6:50.83. Ian Scullion (Central Bucks South) was 16th in the 200 free with a time of 1:48.67.

Hartwick’s Chris Willcox (Upper Dublin) finished fourth in the 200 fly with a NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 1:52.41, the second fastest finish in Hawks history, on Friday in the third day of the UNYSCSA/Empire Championships at Ithaca College. He also finished 12th in the 100 fly (52.15) with the fifth best time at Hartwick. He posted the third fastest finish in Hartwick history in the 200 IM (1:55.66) in the 200 IM.

La Salle senior Daniel Fitzgerald (Upper Dublin) took down the 31-year-old 100 free record of 45.24 with a 44.87 to place third in the event at the 2013 Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championships. In the prelims of the 100 backstroke, Fitzgerald broke the Atlantic 10 record of 48.40 with a time of 48.25. The old record was set in 1999, which made it one of the oldest conference records. Fitzgerald finished second in the finals with a time of 48.76, finishing six one-hundredths of a second shy of the winning time. He also captured fifth in the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.56. The Upper Dublin grad swam the leadoff backstroke leg in the 200 medley relay that finished fifth with a time of 1:30.90. Fitzgerald also swam his personal best in the 50 freestyle, touching the wall in 20.55 to place third overall. He dropped nearly seven-tenths of a second from his lifetime best, which he set at last year’s championship meet.

La Salle junior Dave Derr (Upper Dublin) clocked a personal best of 50.35 to advance to the ‘A’ final in the 100 backstroke at the 2013 Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championships. In the final, he reached a milestone, breaking the 50-second mark for the first time with a time of 49.89 to place sixth overall.

La Salle freshman CJ Gimpel (Central Bucks South) finished fifth on the 3-meter board with 240.45 points at the 2013 Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championships. On the 1-meter board, Gimpel scored 257.65 points to finish fourth.

West Chester senior Calvin Starosta (Upper Dublin) placed second in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:51.08 at the 2013 PSAC Swimming Championships last weekend.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Gettysburg junior Ali Roth (Central Bucks West) qualified for the A final in the 50 free and finished fourth with a time of 24.77 on day one of the Centennial Conference Championships on Friday at Franklin & Marshall College. On Saturday, Roth was part of the 200 medley relay that claimed a bronze medal with a time of 1:51.54. Sophomore Ellie Houser (Upper Dublin) placed 16th in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:03.88.

Taylor Mateja (Upper Merion) was part of Franklin & Marshall’s fourth place 200 medley relay that posted a time of 1:52.84 at the Centennial Conference Championships on Saturday. She also earned points with a 16th place showing in the consolations of the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:03.21. She also was part of the fourth place 200 free relay that posted a time of 1:40.51.

West Chester freshman Dani Barron (Pennridge) finished seventh in the 1650 free with a time of 17:29.80 at the 2013 PSAC Swimming Championships last weekend. Teammate Jess Healy (Hatboro-Horsham) was fifth in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:04.54.

Freshman Carolyn Meier (Upper Dublin) was part of Shippensburg’s 200 free relay that broke a Shippensburg school record in the 200 free relay (1:35.12) in the time trials of the 2013 PSAC Swimming Championships last Sunday. That effort surpassed the previous mark of 1:35.28 set in 2011. She also was part of the 400 free relay that finished fourth with a time of 3:29.11.  Junior Colleen Stiles (North Penn) finished 12th in the 200 backstroke on Sunday with a time of 2:10.81.

Sophomore Chelsea Kozior (Council Rock South) was part of Ursinus College’s 200 free relay that won the B final with a time of 1:40.95 at Saturday’s 2013 Centennial Conference Championships. She also was part of the 400 medley relay that posted a time of 4:01.58 and finished second. Kozior finished fifth in the 500 free with a time of 5:09.84.

Penn State senior Paige Whitmire (Souderton) earned first team All-Big 10 honors during the 2013 Big Ten Championships this weekend. Whitmire brought home the individual title in the 100 freestyle with a program best time of 48.74. The Souderton grad broke the school record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 52.80 in the preliminaries on Friday. That mark was an NCAA B Cut, and she followed that with third place showing and a time of 53.17 in the finals. Whitmire was part of the 200 free relay that broke a school record with a time of 1:28.96. The time claimed a NCAA A Cut time and was over two seconds faster than their previous season-best showing. She also improved upon her own Penn State record in the 50 freestyle, qualifying for the A finals with a prelim swim of 22.48 and came back in the evening session to finish second in the event in a school record time of 22.22. Whitmire was part of the 200 medley relay that clocked a school record 1:37.97 to finish fifth. It was good enough for a NCAA A Cut.

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Johns Hopkins sophomore Michael Spadero (Council Rock South) finished third in the heptathlon (4,046 points) at the Centennial Conference Championship on Saturday. Johns Hopkins went on to win its first conference championship in program history.

Jay Jabat (Pennsbury) won a jump off with Shippensburg's Jalen Ramsey to claim West Chester's only individual PSAC championship on the final day of the 2013 PSAC Indoor Track and Field Championships on Sunday at Edinboro. Jabat and Ramsey each cleared 6 feet, 8 3/4 inches to tie for first place during the regular competition. The bar was lowered three rungs for the first round of jumps, and both Jabat and Ramsey cleared. The bar was then raised back up, and both athletes missed. When the bar was lowered once more, Jabat cleared the height, while Ramsey missed on his jump, giving Jabat his first conference title. Jabat hit an NCAA provisional with his 6-8 3/4 clearance. It was also the fourth best jump in school history.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Senior outside hitter Noah Prickett (Pennsbury) finished with a game-high 15 kills in Cairn University’s 3-0 loss to No. 11 Elmira College. Teammate Ethan Mawhinney (Neshaminy) added 10 kills.

WRESTLING
Shippensburg’s John Lindquist (Neshaminy) earned a tech fall over American International’s PJ Baker and pinned Gannon’s Sean Floor before losing a 15-8 decision to UNC-Pembroke at the 2013 NCAA Super Region 1 Championships on Friday. On Saturday, he was pinned by Kutztown’s Matt Martoccio (Council Rock South). Shippensburg finished sixth as a team, its highest finish since 2007.

Martoccio finished fifth at 157 at the 2013 NCAA Super Region 1 Championships. After receiving an opening round bye, he lost a 1-0 decision to ESU’s Braden Turner in the quarterfinals. In the consolation rounds, Martoccio won a 12-4 major decision over Pitt-Johnstown’s Joel Paolo and followed that with a pin over Lindquist at 5:39. In the consolation semis, Newberry’s Taylor Knapp won by a pin at 1:40, but Martoccio came back to win an 11-3 major decision over Mercyhurst’s Tyler Berger. Turner defeated Martoccio in the fourth place match. Kutztown finished fourth as a team.

Ursinus sophomore Richard Jasinski (Pennridge) captured his bracket at 157 in the Centennial Conference Wrestling Championships on Saturday. He started his title run with a pin of Sam Lyscas of Merchant Marine in 2:07, then decisioned Leo Wortman of Stevens 6-2. In the title bout, he scored a takedown in overtime to defeat Kyle Spangler of Johns Hopkins 3-1. Ursinus captured the team title for the 10th time in school history.

Matt Rappo (Council Rock South) won a 9-3 decision over Joe Bonaldi at 141 in 16th-ranked Bloomsburg’s 36-9 win over Binghamton University in its dual season finale.
