MEN’S BASKETBALL
Junior guard Khalif Wyatt (Norristown) helped lead Temple to its sixth straight win and first place in the Atlantic 10 standings with a 73-56 win at Rhode Island on Saturday in a nationally-televised (ESPN2) game. Wyatt had just three points in the first half but buried a pair of three’s to start the second half to push Temple’s eight-point lead to double figures. Wyatt finished with 16 points and five rebounds. In Wednesday’s 78-68 win over Fordham, Wyatt scored 24 points.
Wyatt earned OwlSports.com’s January Athlete of the Month. It is the first Athlete of the Month award of his career. Wyatt, who currently ranks second on Temple and the A10 in scoring (16.4 PPG), led the Owls in scoring with an 18.5 average to lead Temple to a 6-2 record. Also during the month, he topped the Cherry and White in assists (36), steals (23), three-pointers made (18) and free throw percentage (32-of-37, .865). The Norristown alum was the game’s leading scorer in five of the eight contests in January, including 22 points in wins over then #3 Duke and Saint Louis and 20 in a win over Maryland. Wyatt notched a season-high 28 points, also a game-high, in the Owls’ loss to Dayton. His eight assists (10 points) in a win over St. Joe’s was also a new career best. Wyatt earned his first A10 and Big 5 Player of the Week award during the month (1/9) for his play in the Owls’ win over Duke.
East Stroudsburg freshman guard Whis Grant (Plymouth Whitemarsh) was named the PSAC East Men’s Basketball Freshman of the Week for the second straight week and the third time this season for the week ending Jan. 30. Grant averaged 21.5 points with 21 in a 70-67 loss to Bloomsburg and 22 in a 94-82 win over West Chester. He shot 72.2 percent (13-for-18) from the field, 70.0 percent (7-for-10) from the three-point line and 76.9 percent (10-for-13) from the foul line. He also added five rebounds, five steals and two assists over the two games. Grant raised his season scoring average to 14.7 points per game with his fourth and fifth 20-point games of the season. He entered last week with 294 points and could become the fifth ESU freshman since 1974-75 to score 300 points in a season. He also ranks third in three-pointers (40) and second in three-point percentage (44.0) in EUS’s freshman record book.
Grant scored 12 points in East Stroudsburg’s 93-86 double overtime win over Kutztown on Saturday.
Lorenzo Christmas (Norristown) contributed seven points and four rebounds in Bloomsburg’s 75-68 loss to Millersville last Wednesday.
Sophomore AJ Picard (Souderton) scored 16 points in Goldey-Beacom’s 88-66 loss to Washington Adventist University on Wednesday. In Saturday’s 67-62 win over Post University, Picard contributed seven points and three steals.
Freshman Julian Bond (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored a career-high 18 points in Lock Haven’s 68-66 loss to Edinboro on Saturday. All of Bond’s points came on three-point attempts. He also had four rebounds. In Lock Haven’s 95-68 loss to Mercyhurst on Wednesday, Bond scored nine points and dished out seven assists.
Sophomore guard Kenny Gula (Quakertown) contributed 11 points and three assists in Moravian’s 68-64 win over Susquehanna on Friday.
Senior Dan DelConte (Wissahickon) led all scorers with 19 points and added five assists in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 80-62 win over Immaculata on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 93-79 win over Centenary, DelConte led all scorers with 22 points to go along with six assists and six steals.
Cameron Prince (Hatboro-Horsham) scored 10 points in Lebanon Valley’s 63-61 loss to Alvernia on Saturday. In Saturday’s 57-51 loss to Messiah, Prince contributed eight points.
CJ Aiken (Plymouth Whitemarsh) collected two blocks in St. Joe’s 70-66 win over La Salle on Saturday to move into a tie for third place on the Hawks’ all-time list for career blocks (212). He also chipped in eight points and pulled down seven rebounds. In Wednesday’s 70-60 win over Richmond, Aiken had 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting, including 3-of-4 from three-point range.
Dan Werth (Souderton) scored 11 points in Eastern University’s 82-76 loss to No. 8 Cabrini on Tuesday.
Sophomore guard Jesse Krasna (Pennsbury) had seven rebounds in Ursinus College’s 67-59 win over Gettysburg.
Josh Howard (Bensalem) scored a team-high 15 points in Penn State Abington’s 95-82 loss to Penn State Harrisburg last Sunday, finishing 5-for-9 from the charity stripe. Teammate Matt Marvin (Hatboro-Horsham) crashed the board for 15 rebounds.
Sophomore forward Andrew Stress (Council Rock North) finished with six points, seven boards and three assists in the FDU Florham’s 61-59 win over King’s on Saturday. Nick Reisig (Council Rock South) contributed six points for King’s. In Wednesday’s 66-47 loss to Eastern, Reisig contributed 11 points, three assists and two rebounds.
Sophomore Fran Rafferty (Upper Merion) contributed with 10 points and two blocked shots in #7 Cabrini’s 76-63 win over Marywood University. In Cabrini’s 83-71 win over Rosemont, Rafferty contributed 14 points and four rebounds while teammate Goran Dulac (Pennsbury) pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
Junior guard Derek Brooks (North Penn) netted 11 points in Gettysburg’s 57-45 loss to Johns Hopkins on Wednesday.
Guard Jim Connolly (Souderton) led all players with 24 points in Philadelphia University’s 85-70 win over Concordia (N.Y.) on Saturday. He also hauled down a season-high eight rebounds. He is just 30 points away from becoming the team’s 46th 1,000-point scorer. Guard Nick Christian (Bensalem) dished out a career-high 10 assists. In Tuesday’s 65-58 win over Wilmington (Del.), Christian led the Rams with 18 points. He also tied a career-high with nine assists. Connolly added 11 points.
Marcus Badger (Plymouth Whitemarsh) contributed a team-high 14 points, which included 6-for-6 shooting from the line, in Randolph-Macon’s 78-56 loss to Washington and Lee on Saturday.
Justin Van Houten (Central Bucks East) scored a team-high 16 points – 15 of which came in the first half when he went 5-for-6 from three-point land – in Penn State Altoona’s 94-65 loss to La Roche College on Wednesday.
Steve Warhola (Neshaminy) scored six points and handed out three assists in Neumann University’s 79-59 win over Philadelphia Biblical University on Saturday.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Danielle Derr (Upper Dublin) contributed eight points and nine rebounds in Bloomsburg’s 86-30 win over Cheyney on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 77-73 win over Millersville, Derr came off the bench to contribute seven points and five rebounds.
Millersville redshirt junior Mashira Newman (Upper Dublin) reached the 1,000-point plateau when she sank the first of two foul shots with 1:36 remaining in regulation in Wednesday’s loss to the Huskies. Newman is just the 18th player in Millersville women’s basketball history to score a thousand points in her career. Newman, who needed 17 points entering the game to reach the milestone, finished the game with 20 points. In Saturday’s 69-68 win over West Chester on Saturday, Newman scored nine points. For West Chester, freshman Tiffany Johnson (Cheltenham) contributed five points off the bench.
Daniella Ciccarone (Quakertown) scored 14 points in Walsh University’s 71-66 loss to Urbana on Thursday.
Junior Shakia Robinson (North Penn) scored 17 points on 8-for-16 shooting to go along with five rebounds in the University of Massachusett’s 81-67 loss to La Salle on Saturday. In UMass’s 80-58 loss to Charlotte, Robinson contributed eight points.
Sophomore Brittany Sandone (Souderton) led Cabrini with 12 points and a career-high six steals in the Cavaliers’ 62-45 win over Notre Dame (Md.) on Saturday. Teammate Jenn Casper (Council Rock North) added six points. In Wednesday’s 62-47 win over Rosemont College, Sandone led a balanced attack with 13 points. In Monday’s 61-51 loss to Eastern University, Sandone led the Cavaliers with 13 points and six rebounds.
Brittany Kaewell (Central Bucks South) dished out a game-high six assists to go along with three steals in Penn State Altoona’s 69-59 loss to Pitt-Bradford on Saturday.
Calla Miller (Central Bucks South) scored six points and handed out four assists in Haverford’s 61-43 win over McDaniel College on Saturday.
Senior Lauren Peters (Central Bucks West) contributed six rebounds, five assists and three points in Holy Family University’s 82-61 win over Caldwell on Saturday.
Ginny Edwards (Central Bucks South) had a team-high eight rebounds in Wilkes’ 89-74 win over Manhattanville on Saturday.
Colleen Hinde (Wissahickon) contributed 11 points and five steals in Neumann University’s 77-48 win over Cedar Crest College on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 69-61 loss to Immaculata, Hinde had 10 points.
Ashley Rosario (Harry S Truman) contributed seven points and two rebounds in Goldey-Beacom’s 64-61 win over Bloomfield College on Saturday.
Jessica Schmidt (Abington) collected her first double-double of the season in Penn State Abington’s 75-55 loss to St. Elizabeth on Wednesday, contributing 15 points and 10 rebounds. In last Sunday’s 68-44 loss to Penn State Harrisburg, Schmidt scored 10 points.
Senior guard Alli Rosati (Central Bucks East) scored 11 points in Ursinus College’s 64-60 win over Gettysburg on Saturday. In Tuesday’s 56-27 over Bryn Mawr, Rosati contributed 10 points.

Heather McHugh (Norristown) scored 13 points in Lock Haven’s 80-57 loss to Mercyhurst on Wednesday, connecting on 3-of-5 shots from beyond the arc. Teammate Kelsey Ryan (Neshaminy) added 12 points on 5-for-10 shooting from the field.
Sophomore Taylour Alston (North Penn) contributed 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead Gwynedd-Mercy to a 72-66 win over Immaculata on Saturday. It was Alston’s first double-double of the season and led the Griffins to their 11th straight win in a Colonial States 
Athletic Conference tilt. In Wednesday’s 89-32 win over Notre Dame (Md.), senior Bryn Cotteta (Norristown) scored 10 points and dished out a career-high 13 assists. Sophomore Natasha Matthews (Norristown) grabbed a team-best six rebounds and added nine points as the Griffins dominated the glass 42-28.
Sarah Kiely (Council Rock North) contributed six points and four rebounds in American University’s 70-47 win over Colgate on Saturday.
MEN’S SWIMMING
La Salle junior Dan Fitzgerald (Upper Dublin) finished fourth in the 100 back with a time of 54.09 while sophomore Dave Derr (Upper Dublin) finished sixth in the same event with a time of 54.49 in Saturday’s tri-meet against Penn and UMBC.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Penn State junior Paige Whitmire (Souderton) finished first in the 50 free with a time of 23.24 in Saturday’s tri-meet that saw the Nittany Lions sweep Lehigh and Saint Francis.
Freshman Melanie Busch (William Tennent) captured first place in the 50 free (23.57) while teammate Megan Lafferty (Upper Dublin) finished first in the 50 fly with a time of 25.72 in #22 Maryland’s 227-54 win over Georgetown on Saturday. Lafferty was part of the Terps’ winning 200 medley relay (1:43.29) while both Busch and Lafferty were part of Maryland’s winning 200 free relay (1:34.79).
East Stroudsburg freshman Melissa Smith (Pennsbury) finished second in the 200 free (2:05.33) at Saturday’s ESU Invitational. She also finished fourth in the 500 free (5:39.04) and was part of the Warriors’ fourth place 200 free relay (1:54.16).
Amanda Thomas (William Tennent) captured Millersville’s only first place finish at the East Stroudsburg Invitational on Saturday, finishing first in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:01.39. Teammate Victoria DeTample (Pennsbury) finished the race in third place in a time of 2:07.85. She also captured second in the 500 free with a time of 5:31.52.
Senior CJ Corcoran (Souderton) earned four victories in Washington and Jefferson College’s 155-102 win over Wheeling Jesuit, finishing first in the 50 (32.42), 100 breaststroke (1:10.66) and 100 IM (1:02.77). She also was part of the winning 200 medley relay.
Rachel Vagnoni (Norristown) closed out her Lock Haven career with a lifetime best swim in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.95 in the prelims of the New Haven Invite on Saturday.
Freshman Chelsea Kozior (Council Rock South) won the 100 free with a time of 56.89 in Ursinus College’s 113-89 win over Bryn Mawr College on Saturday.
Kelsey Tennent (Hatboro-Horsham) helped lead West Chester’s diving team at Saturday’s Delaware Diving Invitational on the campus of the University of Delaware. The Hatter alum placed fifth in the 3m competition with a score of 249.5, and she finished sixth in the 1m competition with a score of 249.6.
MEN’S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD
Johns Hopkins freshman Michael Spadaro (Council Rock South) finished second in triple jump with a jump of 13.48 meters (44’2 ¾”) at Haverford’s Seamus McElligott Invitational track meet this weekend. He finished fourth in both the high jump and pole vault and ran the lead-off leg in the 4x400 meter relay.
WRESTLING
Freshman Richard Jasinski (Pennridge) earned a 12-9 decision at 157 in Ursinus College’s 25-15 win over McDaniel on Saturday. In the Bears’ 30-9 win over NYU, Jasinski won via a technical fall 16-0.
