BASEBALL
Jack Brucker (Upper Dublin) delivered an RBI double in Alvernia’s 9-0 win over Ursinus College on Friday. The win was part of a doubleheader sweep by Alvernia, which won game one by a 2-1 score.
Eric Kammler (Pennridge) was 3-for-4 with an RBI double in La Salle’s 9-6 win over Morehead State on Sunday in Morehead, Ky. Teammate Jon Gyles (Central Bucks West) also contributed an RBI double while Adam Kammler (Pennridge) contributed one hit and one RBI. In Saturday’s 13-9 win over Morehead State, Kevin Christy (North Penn) worked two shutout innings in relief. The win was Christy’s second on the season with both coming in relief. In La Salle’s 6-4 loss to Morehead State on Friday night, Eric Kammler had his first home run of the season and added two RBIs. Adam Kammler went 2-for-4.
Keith Meyer (Council Rock South) was 2-for-4 with a run scored in Bloomsburg’s 2-1 win over Carson-Newman on Tuesday in the first game of a doubleheader. The Huskies dropped the nightcap by a score of 4-3.
Andrew Donofry (Hatboro-Horsham) was 2-for-3 with an RBI in Chestnut Hill’s 4-3 loss to Post University on Friday in the second game of a doubleheader in Ft. Pierce, Fla. Post also won the first game 10-2. In Chestnut Hill’s 7-5 win over Ohio Valley College on Thursday, Joe Mullin (Central Bucks South) contributed one hit and one RBI and scored two runs. Jack McGinley (Wissahickon) worked 1.1 innings of relief to earn the win, allowing one hit and striking out one.
Chris Edgar (North Penn) singled and scored a run in Millersville’s 19-3 rout of Chowan on Saturday. In Thursday’s 7-3 loss to Wingate, Edgar also contributed a single and scored a run. The loss snapped Millersville’s seven-game winning streak. In Wednesday’s 10-4 win over Wingate, Edgar collected three hits and scored twice. Millersville was voted No. 10 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers’ Association (NCBWA) Atlantic Region Top 10 that was released last Monday.
Alec Jacob (Pennsbury) picked up the win on the mound in Lock Haven’s 14-5 win over Alderson Broaddus on Tuesday, allowing two walks and striking out one in five innings of work.
Drew Stoll (Council Rock South) delivered a sacrifice fly and also scored a run in St. Joe’s 4-3 loss to Iona on Friday.
Mike Franklin (Souderton) turned in a gutsy performance on the mound in Penn State’s 10-4 win over Old Dominion on Wednesday. After allowing four early runs, the junior southpaw grew stronger as the game went on, striking out the side in the fifth and punching out two more in the seventh before handing the ball off to the bullpen. Franklin earned the win after striking out six over seven innings of work.
Matt Albaugh (North Penn) contributed a hit and drove in a run in Kutztown’s 10-8 loss to 20th-ranked Armstrong on Tuesday.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Freshman forward Fran Rafferty (Upper Merion) scored 15 points in Cabrini’s 94-77 loss to the College of Wooster in an NCAA quarterfinal game on Friday night. Rafferty connected on 6-of-10 shots overall and 3-of-6 from beyond the three-point arc. Senior forward Dom Farrello (William Tennent) finished with 14 points. Farrello finished his collegiate career having won 73 games, including 71 over the last three seasons. He helped lead the Cavaliers to back-to-back CSAC titles and two straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
Temple senior forward Lavoy Allen (Pennsbury) has been invited to participate in the NABC All-Star game on April 1 at Reliant Stadium in Houston. He also has been invited to take part in the 2011 Portsmouth Invitational held April 6-9 in Portsmouth, Va. Allen, who is Temple’s all-time rebound leader (1,103) and ranks 27th on the all-time scoring list with 1,380 points, leads the Owls and ranks fourth in the A-10 with an 8.2 rebound average. He also tops the team and ranks fourth in the league in blocks per game (1.8) while placing second on the squad with an 11.8 scoring average.
On March 7, the Atlantic 10 announced its post-season honors. Allen was named first team all-conference for the second straight season and to the league’s all-defensive team for the third time, Allen has averaged 17.6 points and 14 rebounds over the last five games. Sophomore guard Khalif Wyatt (Norristown) and teammate Scootie Randall were named the league’s Sixth Man of the Year. Wyatt came off the bench in 25 of the team’s 30 games, averaging 9.5 points while leading the team in steals (tie-37) and three-point percentage (.419). He had 12 double-figure scoring games, and his 27 points against Penn on Jan. 19 were the second most by a Temple reserve in 26 years. He becomes the fifth Temple player to earn the honor.
Wyatt scored a team-high 15 points in Temple’s 58-54 loss to Richmond in an Atlantic 10 semifinal contest on Saturday. In Temple’s 96-76 win over LaSalle in an opening round game, Wyatt came off the bench to contribute 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field. He also had three assists and three steals. Allen contributed a double-double, scoring 14 points while pulling down 12 rebounds.
Freshman C.J. Aiken (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored seven points and blocked three shots in St. Joe’s 64-61 loss to Dayton in the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Tournament on Saturday. In St. Joe’s 71-59 opening round overtime upset of fifth-seeded George Washington, Aiken contributed 11 points and five blocks. Included in his 11 points was a perfect 6-for-6 effort at the foul line.
Goldey-Beacom freshman A.J. Picard (Souderton) connected on a key three-point basket in a 10-0 run late in the first half of last Saturday’s Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference final against Bloomfield. The run put the Lightning on top 40-38 in a contest they lost 94-81.
Philadelphia University closed its season with a 15-12 record. The Rams were the #2 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South seed. Their season ended with a 64-54 loss to #3 Chestnut Hill. Scoring efforts for the Rams this season were led by CACC All-Conference Second Team player Jim Connolly (Souderton) who averaged 16.9 points a game and 4.9 rebounds. The sophomore guard led the team from the charity stripe, shooting 90 percent. At one time he led all of NCAA Division II in free throw percentage with 95 percent.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Millersville sophomore Mashira Newman (Upper Dublin) was named to the All-PSAC East Second Team. The sophomore guard averaged 36.1 minutes per game. She led the conference and was third in Division II with 4.0 steals per game. She had a total of 113 steals this year, and her two-year total of 221 ranks her eighth all-time at Millersville. Offensively, Newman scored 407 points this year and recorded double-digit scoring performances in 22 contests this season. In Millersville’s win over Shippensburg on Feb. 28, Newman scored a career-high 30 points – the most by a Marauder since the 2005-06 season. She was second in the conference and 16th in Division II with 5.2 assists per game. She dished out a total of 145 assists this season and is 15th all-time with a total of 234 in just two years.
Newman scored a team-high 19 points while teammate Sophia Waters (Norristown) added 13 in Millersville’s 71-68 loss to West Liberty in the first round of the NCAA Division II Tournament on Friday.
Redshirt sophomore guard Ashley Rosario (Harry S. Truman) connected on 7-of-13 shots from the field on the way to a career-high 15 points in Goldey-Beacom’s 79-67 loss to No. 2 seed Holy Family in the school’s first-ever appearance in the NCAA East Regional Tournament on Friday afternoon. Senior Lindsey Tennett (Pennridge) scored 15 points off the bench for Holy Family, connecting on 7-of-13 shots from the field.
Philadelphia University closed its 2010-11 regular season by winning its last three contests, earning the #4 South seed in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) heading into the post-season. The Rams fell in the quarterfinals to No. 1 seeded Holy Family 72-58. Senior guard Taylor Magnus (Plymouth Whitemarsh) ended the season averaging 8.2 points a game and 2.5 rebounds. She led the team in three-point shooting, averaging 42 percent from beyond the arc.
Princeton senior Addie Micir (Council Rock North) was the unanimous selection as the 2011 Ivy League Women’s Basketball Player of the Year. Micir, the Tigers’ captain, helped guide her team to a 24-4 overall record and a 13-1 Ivy League mark to win Princeton’s second straight Ivy League championship and NCAA bid. A four-year starter, she is a member of the 1,000-point club and is one of the program’s best three-point and free-throw shooters. She led the league in three’s made and assist-to-turnover ratio, finished third in assists, sixth in field goal percentage and ninth in scoring. Micir, Princeton’s leading scorer, earned two Ivy League Player of the Week honors this year and was a second team All-Ivy selection in 2009 and 2010.
Senior Liz Leer (Abington) hit a pair of key three-pointers in overtime to lead American University to a 69-64 win over Lehigh in the Patriot League Tournament semifinals in Bethlehem on Wednesday. Leer led the way for AU with 18 points – 12 of which came in the second half and the other six in overtime – on 6-of-12 shooting and 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. She added seven rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots. In Saturday’s title game, Navy downed American 47-40. Leer contributed eight points and 10 rebounds.
MEN’S LACROSSE
Sophomore midfielder Ryan Sankey (William Tennent) contributed a goal and sophomore midfielder Joe Hughes (Plymouth Whitemarsh) was credited with five ground balls in No. 20 Cabrini’s 12-10 win over No. 11 Hampden-Sydney College on Wednesday.
Kevin Sonderschafe (Central Bucks South) contributed a goal and two assists in Chestnut Hill College’s 11-8 win over American International College on Tuesday.
Sophomore Johnny Casey (Abington) scored three goals in Widener’s 12-5 win over Frostburg State on Saturday.
Freshman midfielder Shawn Caven (Pennsbury) was 9-for-13 on faceoffs in Ursinus College’s 7-6 win over Eastern College on Saturday. On Wednesday, Caven had nine ground balls and was 13-for-28 on faceoffs in Ursinus College’s 17-10 loss to fifth-ranked Roanoke.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Ursinus College sophomore midfielder Elizabeth Chatburn (Upper Dublin) was named the Centennial Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Week last week. Chatburn caused six turnovers and picked up five ground balls in a win over Eastern the preceding Thursday.
Lindsey Urban (Central Bucks East) contributed a goal in Ursinus College’s 14-11 loss to Roanoke on Monday.
Bernadette Maher (Council Rock North) contributed two goals and an assist in American University’s 18-7 win over Virginia Tech on Wednesday. In last Saturday’s 13-7 win over Old Dominion, Maher contributed the hat trick.
Kelly McKay (Pennridge) contributed a goal and two assists in Chestnut Hill’s 19-3 win over the University of Bridgeport on Sunday. Teammate Michelle Wiater (Pennridge) added a pair of goals.
Senior Kelsey Schmoltze (Upper Moreland) connected for the hat trick in Millersville’s 13-10 win over Mercy College on Sunday. It is the first time since 2008 that the Marauders have opened their season with a 2-0 mark. Goalkeeper Courtney Haggerty (Hatboro-Horsham) stopped 13 shots. In Millersville’s season-opening 15-9 win over previously undefeated Shepherd on Friday, Schmoltze scored a career-high six goals and also added two assists. Haggerty stopped eight shots in goal.
Kate Smyth (Pennsbury) scored a pair of goals while teammates Samantha Hurley (Council Rock South) and Lindsay Walbrandt (Souderton) each added single goals in Lock Haven’s 18-6 win over Pfieffer University on Friday.
Freshman Aubrey Bossert (Wissahickon) connected for the hat trick in Bloomsburg’s 17-6 win over St. Andrew’s Presbyterian College in a game played in Arnold, Md., on Saturday. In Tuesday’s 11-10 win over Bentley, Bossert contributed a single goal.
In Shippensburg’s 11-7 loss to No. 4 Limestone on Monday, senior Karen Schnurr (Central Bucks South) scored a pair of goals, bringing her season total to six. Junior Ali Cross (Upper Dublin) contributed an assist.
Senior attacker Mary Dean (Cheltenham) notched a pair of goals and added an assist in Penn State’s 11-3 win over Delaware on Saturday. In Tuesday’s 10-7 loss to No. 6 Loyola, Dean scored a pair of goals. In Penn State’s 10-5 loss to No. 5 Virginia last Sunday, Dean contributed a goal and an assist.
Senior Michelle Mangiaruga (North Penn) and sophomore Ali Green (North Penn) had a hand of 12 of East Stroudsburg's goals as the Warriors closed their two-game trip to North Carolina with a 15-11 win at Bemont Abbey on Friday afternoon. Mangiaruga contributed one goal and a career-high four assists while Green added two goals and three assists. In East Stroudsburg's 14-13 loss to Pfeiffer on Wednesday, Mangiaruga had three goals and three assists while Green added a single goal.
Allison Herman (North Penn) contributed a goal in La Salle's 14-12 overtime win over Davidson on Friday. In Wednesday's 9-7 win over Presbyterians on Wednesday, Lauren McDermott (North Penn) contributed one goal.
SOFTBALL
Alicia Hughes (Quakertown) allowed just two hits while striking out five to earn her second shutout of the season in Millersville’s 8-0 win in five innings over Nyack College to close out play at Clermont, Fla., on Friday. In Millersville’s 4-0 loss to West Virginia Wesleyan, Deanna Schneiderreit (William Tennent) was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate for the Marauders. In Thursday’s 7-6 win over St. Joseph’s (Ind.), Hughes earned her fourth consecutive win. Schneiderreit singled and scored the game-winning run in the sixth inning. In Wednesday’s 4-1 win over Post, Hughes collected her second straight win, pitching 11 scoreless innings in her last two starts before giving up Post’s only run in the top of the seventh inning. In Millersville’s 14-3 win over Urbana on Monday, Schneiderreit collected a single in the Marauders’ 11-run uprising in the second. Hughes picked up her second win of the year in a five-inning shutout effort in Millersville’s 10-0 win over Southern New Hampshire.
Erin Holloway (Souderton) tossed a complete game shutout in IUP’s 5-0 win over Caldwell on Thursday, allowing just two hits and striking out seven. The seven strikeouts put Holloway over 800 for her career. She now has 805. In the second inning, Mary Ward (North Penn) delivered an RBI double, and Dee Eppinger (North Penn) drove in Ward with a single. IUP is 10-2 on the season. In Wednesday’s 4-3 win over No. 23 Minnesota State, Ward gave IUP a 3-2 lead in the sixth with a solo homerun – the first round tripper of her career. Holloway absorbed the loss in IUP’s 1-0 loss to No. 25 Saginaw. The senior ace allowed just one run on eight hits while striking out eight. On Tuesday, IUP posted a 14-1 win over the University of the Sciences and a 7-0 shutout of Ashland. In the first game, Eppinger contributed a hit and scored three runs. In the win over Ashland, Ward drove in a pair of runs while Holloway earned her 23rd career shutout with seven innings of two-hit ball, which included six strikeouts.
Holloway was named PSAC Central Pitcher of the Week for the week ending March 7. The senior hurler notched three wins in three starts and one relief appearance. She had three complete games and worked to an ERA of 1.29 and an opponent batting average of .128 in 21 2/3 innings, allowing only 10 hits and four earned runs while striking out 33. In a season-opening 11-0 win over Shepherd, Holloway allowed one hit and struck out nine in a game that was halted after five innings. In IUP’s 7-2 win over Southern Indiana, she gave up just three hits and one earned run with 11 strikeouts. Holloway then struck out eight in an 8-1 win over Edinboro. She wrapped up her week with 2 2/3 innings of hitless relief, striking out five in a 4-2 win over St. Cloud State. Holloway is among the school leaders in every pitching category. In addition to shutouts, she is first in IUP history and fourth in PSAC history with 790 strikeouts, third in innings pitched (601), wins (55) and appearances (103) and tied for third in complete games (77).
Beth Everist (North Penn) contributed two hits and scored a run in Mount St. Mary’s 7-6 win over Alabama State at the North Florida Tournament in Jacksonville, Fla., on Saturday. Courtney Zingle (Hatboro-Horsham) delivered an RBI single and scored a run. She moved into fifth place for career runs scored (72) and seventh for career games played (154). Amanda Sadowl (Hatboro-Horsham) started the contest and pitched the first four innings. On Friday, Everist smacked a two-run home run in Mount St. Mary’s 3-2 loss to Kansas. In Thursday’s 4-2 win over Georgia Southern, Zingle went 2-for-3 -which included a solo home run - with two RBIs. She also had a hit in the nightcap – a 10-1 loss to Georgia Southern.
Deanna Dungee (North Penn) came in to secure the final three outs and earn the save in Alvernia’s 6-4 win over Cedarville on Wednesday.
Junior third baseman Rachel Gieringer (Hatboro-Horsham) hit .370 (10-for-27) during East Stroudsburg's nine-game stint in Florida. The Warriors are 8-6 overall.
Junior Emily Parkins (Souderton) contributed an RBI fielder’s choice while teammate Moira Johnsen (Council Rock North) delivered a sacrifice fly in Shippensburg’s 5-4 win over No. 23 Minnesota State in the Raiders’ final game in the 2011 Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmeee, Fla., on Friday. In Shippensburg’s 9-2 win over Fayetteville State on Wednesday, Parkins tossed a complete game in the circle, allowing two unearned runs while striking out a career-high 11 batters. Parkins allowed four hits.
MEN’S TENNIS
Corey Garnier (Neshaminy) notched a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles in Millersville’s 8-1 win over Ashford on Wednesday.
Daniel Lee (Abington) notched a 6-2, 6-3 win in singles competition in The College of New Jersey’s 7-2 win over Coe College on Monday.
