BASEBALL
Dylan Tice (Pennridge)
totaled five hits, but IUP could only score four total runs as the Crimson Hawks dropped a pair of games to 18th-ranked Wilmington (Del.) on Saturday at Harford Community College in Maryland. In last Sunday’s 3-1 win over Tiffin to win the Riverside Classic Tournament in Williamston, N.C., Tice was 4-for-4 with a walk and RBI.

David Pine (Council Rock North) delivered an RBI single in Millersville’s 6-4 loss to #13 Franklin Pierce on Saturday.

Junior designated hitter Ken McCormick (Pennsbury) had two hits in Philadelphia University’s 4-1 loss to West Chester University on Saturday at the Bill Giles Tournament in Aberdeen, Md., on Saturday. Philadelphia outhit West Chester 10-2. In Monday’s 10-1 win over the University of the Sciences, McCormick had three hits in four at-bats, including a double.

Ryan Henritzy (Council Rock North) delivered a two-out, two-run single in Lock Haven’s 5-4 loss to Kutztown last Sunday in the Builder Invitational. He finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs. He finished the tournament with a team best .479 batting average, nine runs scored and six RBIs and was named to the Builder Invitational All-Tournament team.

Freshman Brian Maher (North Penn) worked a scoreless inning and a third in relief in La Salle’s 7-6 loss to Western Carolina on Saturday night.

Sophomore Chris Hens (Hatboro-Horsham) delivered a two-out, two-run triple in Gwynedd Mercy’s 5-3 win to #3 Kean last Sunday. Senior John Burns (Neshaminy) contributed a sacrifice fly. Sophomore David Blount (Harry S Truman) finished 2-for-5 and also had a stolen base.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
Senior Chris Davis (Norristown) contributed 12 points and four assists in Alvernia’s 70-69 come-from-behind win over top-seeded Stevenson University on Saturday in the Commonwealth Conference Men’s Basketball Championship final at Stevenson. In Alvernia’s 81-77 win over Messiah in Wednesday’s semifinal, Davis had 12 points and 11 assists, passing Chris Alba (’02) for the single-season assist record at Alvernia. He now has 177 this year and holds the game (17), season (177) and career (473) records at Alvernia.

Penn State Abington junior forward Mike Marvin (Hatboro-Horsham) was named to the All-North Eastern Athletic Conference first team. The Hatboro grad led the Nittany Lions with 19.8 points per game and 11.7 rebounds per game. He ranks second in the NEAC in field goals (130-242, .537) and is ranked third in the nation with 18 double-doubles and ninth in rebounds per game.
Marvin scored a team-high 23 points on 10-of-20 shooting from the field in Penn State Abington’s 91-72 loss to Morrisville State College in the NEAC semifinal game on Saturday.

Julian Bond (Plymouth Whitemarsh) connected on a pair of three-pointers and finished with 13 points in Lock Haven’s 79-70 win over Cheyney on Wednesday.

Junior Travis Bryan (Hatboro-Horsham) pulled down a team-high seven rebounds and had three blocked shots in DeSales University’s 73-64 overtime win over Misericordia Saturday to capture its third Freedom Conference Championship. In Wednesday’s 77-68 win over Manhattanville, Bryan and Michael Guldin (Pennridge) each had eight points. Bryan also had nine boards.

Senior Dalton Pepper (Pennsbury) scored 24 points, including 18 in the first half, in Temple’s 89-79 loss to Houston on Saturday. In Thursday’s 88-66 loss to #7/4 Louisville, Pepper scored 10 points.

Lorenzo Christmas (Norristown) scored a game-high 22 points in Bloomsburg’s 82-71 win over Kutztown in the opening round of the PSAC Tournament on Saturday. He took over 13th place in the BU scoring charts with 1,291 career points. In Wednesday’s 73-64 loss to Kutztown in the regular season finale for both, Christmas had eight points and six rebounds.

Kutztown University’s Josh Johnson (Norristown) was selected as the PSAC Eastern Division Freshman of the Week for the week ending Feb. 23. This was the second consecutive week he received this honor, and it marks the fourth time this season that Johnson has received the accolade. Johnson was Kutztown’s top overall player last week and helped KU clinch the final spot in the playoffs. He averaged a team-best 19 points per game on 76.2 percent shooting (16-for-21), improving his season average to 61.9 percent for second in the PSAC. Along with his 19 points, he notched a double-double and averaged 7.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 blocks per game for the week. In Kutztown’s win over Shippensburg, Johnson led the way with 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the field, including a 7-for-7 start. In 33 minutes, he grabbed four rebounds, had three blocks and three assists. Against Lock Haven, he notched a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds on 7-for-10 shooting. Johnson is averaging more than 20 points per game in his last three and averages 13 points and 6.9 rebounds per game on 61.9 percent shooting, second in the PSAC.
Johnson scored in double figures for the 22nd game this season with 11 points in Kutztown’s 82-71 loss to Bloomsburg in a PSAC first round game on Saturday. Sophomore Ryan Connolly (Souderton) appeared in this first game since Feb. 15 due to injury and scored six points on two late-game three-pointers. He shot 88.9 percent from the free throw line this season for the second highest in school history in a single season. In Wednesday’s 73-64 road victory at Bloomsburg in the regular season finale, Johnson had 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting with five rebounds.

Randolph-Macon junior Marcus Badger (Plymouth Whitemarsh) earned third team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference honors. The PW grad started all 25 games. He led the ODAC in assist/turnover ratio at 2.3. Badger was third in assists with 3.7 per game and fifth in steals with 1.6 per contest. He was MVP of the Randolph-Macon Coaches Classic and ODAC Player of the Week on Dec. 30. Badger averaged 9.3 points per game and 3.2 rebounds per outing.

Senior Fran Rafferty (Upper Merion) scored 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting and also had six rebounds in Cabrini’s 96-79 win over Neumann University in Friday’s Colonial State Athletic Conference championship. It is Cabrini’s fifth consecutive conference title.  The Cavaliers will await Monday’s NCAA Men’s Basketball Selection Show to learn their tournament fate. In Tuesday’s 109-97 win over Rosemont in the semifinal game, Rafferty had nine points.

Sophomore Ryan Arcidiacono (Neshaminy) became the latest member of the Villanova Wildcats to be honored for his efforts by the BIG EAST and Philadelphia Big Five when he was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll and was the Philadelphia Big Five Player of the Week for the week ending Feb. 23. The Neshaminy grad became the fifth Wildcat to be named to a BIG EAST Honor Roll this season. In a week that saw Villanova battle to the wire for wins at Providence (82-79 in double overtime) and against St. John’s (a 57-54 win), it was Arcidiacono’s drive for a traditional three-point play that helped lift the Wildcats past the Friars with 3.6 seconds to play in the second overtime. For good measure, he banked in a three-pointer with 3.44 left in regulation to snap a 50-50 tie and give VU the advantage. Arcidiacono averaged 16.4 points and 4.5 assists for the week while committing just two turnovers in 80 minutes of action.
Arcidiacono scored nine points in No. 8 Villanova’s 67-48 win over Butler on Wednesday.

Luke Moyer (Souderton) tied his career high with 16 points, including 4-of-8 from beyond the arc, in Campbell’s 56-53 loss to High Point on Friday. In Wednesday’s 82-78 loss to Radford, Moyer had 12 points.

Senior guard Nick Christian (Bensalem) contributed eight points, eight rebounds and seven assists in Philadelphia University’s 75-71 win over Goldey-Beacom in Tuesday’s regular season finale.

Freshman Keelan Adams (Neshaminy) contributed a career-high 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting and also pulled down five rebounds in Shippensburg’s 92-87 win over Millersville on Wednesday.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Senior Daniella Ciccarone (Quakertown) surpassed the 1,000-point mark in St. Thomas University’s 56-40 loss to Ave Maria in the team’s regular season finale last Saturday. Ciccarone, who finished with 12 points, became the seventh player in the program’s seven-year history to score 1,000 or more points as a collegiate player. The Quakertown grad spent her freshman and sophomore seasons at Walsh University (Ohio) where she totaled 508 points as a Cavalier. After transferring to St. Thomas, she scored 142 points last season for the Bobcats as a junior. This season has been the most prolific of Ciccarone’s career with 356 points through 27 games. Ciccarone has led the Bobcats to a regular season Sun Conference championship and the number one seed in the conference tournament. She has come on strong in the last five games, averaging 18.4 points per game and scoring 20 or more points three times. On Feb. 19, in a win over Northwood, she scored a career-best 29 points, highlighted by 17-of-18 shooting from the free throw line. She has been outstanding from the charity stripe over the five-game span, shooting 50-of-55 (91 percent). In Friday’s 71-62 loss to Webber International in the conference semifinals, Ciccarone scored a game-high 28 points on 7-of-16 shooting and 14-of-16 from the free throw line.

Senior Kelsey Ryan (Neshaminy) scored a season-high 16 points in Lock Haven’s 73-61 win over Cheyney on Wednesday.
Sarah Kiely (Council Rock North) scored a career-high 18 points, going a career-best 4-of-7 from beyond the arc, to lead American University to a 67-53 win at Bucknell on Saturday.

Gwynedd Mercy junior Natasha Matthews (Norristown) earned All-Colonial States Athletic Conference honorable mention recognition. It is her second straight all-league recognition. In 24 games this season, she averaged 11 points and a team-leading 6.0 rebounds a game. She has posted four double-doubles on the year while shooting 45.5 percent (106-for-233) from the floor. Matthews was honored twice this season by the CSAC in its weekly awards, garnering a spot on the honor roll.
Matthews was selected to the CSAC Women’s Basketball Honor Roll for the week ending Feb. 23. She led the team in scoring in two games. Against Cabrini, she recorded her fourth double-double of the season (15 points/10 rebounds) and added three blocks and a steal. She shot 6-of-13 from the floor and a perfect 3-for-3 at the line. In Gwynedd’s win over Immaculata, she scored a season-high 22 points, 15 in the second half while shooting 7-for-12 and 8-for-10 at the free throw line. She also added five boards, two steals and a blocked shot.

Senior Jordan Dominic (Pennridge) scored a game-high 19 points, connecting on a personal-best six three-pointers, in #5 Gwynedd Mercy’s 83-73 win over #4 Marywood in the opening round of the CSAC Tournament Monday. Matthews finished with nine points and six rebounds. In Wednesday’s 78-59 semifinal loss to Cabrini, Matthews scored six points and also had a team-high seven rebounds and two blocks.

Senior Brittany Sandone (Souderton) led all scorers with 19 points in Cabrini’s 88-59 win over Immaculata to capture its second straight Colonial States Athletic Conference championships. The Souderton grad moved into fifth place on the program’s all-time scoring list with 1,337 career points. The Cavaliers await Monday’s NCAA Selection Show to learn their tournament fate. In Wednesday’s 78-59 semifinal win over Gwynedd Mercy, Sandone contributed 14 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Sophomore Alex Wheatley (Council Rock South) scored 10 points in Princeton’s 85-63 win over Yale on Friday.

Junior Devin Gold (Council Rock North) contributed seven rebounds, three points and two assists in Caldwell College’s 70-65 win over the University of the Sciences in the quarterfinals of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament on Saturday.

Sophomore Ciara ‘CC’ Andrews (Cheltenham) scored 10 points in St. Joe’s 85-51 win over Massachusetts on Thursday.

Villanova University junior center Emily Leer (Abington) has been named the Philadelphia Big Five women’s basketball player of the week in addition to earning a spot on the Big East Conference Weekly Honor Roll for the week ending Feb. 23. Leer led the Wildcats to a 65-52 win over Georgetown in the team’s only game of the week. In the victory, Leer scored a career-high 28 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the field, including a 6-of-12 effort from three-point range and a 2-of-4 effort from the foul line. She also had two rebounds, one block, one assist and one steal. The six three-point field goals tie a career-best performance. This was Leer’s third 20-point game of the season. She registered 24 points in a win at Lehigh on Nov. 14 and 21 points in a victory at La Salle on Dec. 15. Leer has started all 26 games this year and is averaging 9.2 points per game and 3.3 rebounds per contest. She leads the team in blocks with 24 and is second in three-point field goals made with 40.

FIELD HOCKEY
Freshman Marissa Glatt (Central Bucks East) received the Award for Outstanding Athlete at the Lehigh University field hockey team’s annual banquet. This award is given to the team member who makes the most outstanding athletic contribution to the accomplishment of the team. Glatt was the league’s only rookie named first team All-Patriot League. She posted a team-leading 12 goals and 25 points to pace the Lehigh offense. She scored a goal in 11 of the team’s 18 games, which included a six-game goal streak from Sept. 6-22. Glatt scored a career-high two goals at La Salle while posting four goals and one assist in Patriot League play.

FOOTBALL

Albright senior Drew Peterson (Harry S Truman) was drafted by the Washington Eagles of the American Indoor Football League draft last week out of a pool of 88 outstanding seniors who had participated in the 20th Annual USA Football Bowl on Jan. 20, 2014, in Hover, Ala. The All-American safety has just signed a professional contract with the Hamburg Huskies in Germany. He will head to Europe in April. Peterson was a first team AFCA and second team D3football.com and BSN All-American selection this fall, while being named to the Associated Press Little All-America squad as well. He totaled eight interceptions in 2013 and 16 for his career.

MEN’S SOCCER
Members of the six Philadelphia and Division I men’s soccer programs gathered at the Sheraton University City for the annual Soccer Six awards banquet. La Salle freshmen Matt Robinson (North Penn) and Dan Caya (Pennridge) were selected to the Soccer 6 All-Rookie team Robinson made 14 starts in 2013 as a true freshman in the Explorer midfield. He picked up assists on Sept. 4 vs. Loyloa (Md.) and Sept. 21 vs. Lehigh. Caya found his way into the starting lineup on Sept. 11 at LIU Brooklyn and never looked back. In his 17 starts as a defender, La Salle allowed only 1.23 goals per game. He scored his first career goal vs. Lehigh on Sept. 21.

SOFTBALL
Freshman Bridget Hunt (Harry S Truman) drew a bases-loaded walk in Binghamton’s 13-3 win over New Mexico State on Thursday at the UNLV Tournament. In an 8-4 loss to DePaul earlier in the day, Hunt extended her hitting streak to five games. That streak ended against New Mexico State.

Freshman Michelle Holweger (North Penn) had a big day at the plate in Lock Haven’s 5-2 win over Dowling on Saturday, recording three of the Haven’s seven hits. She was 3-for-3 with an RBI. In Friday’s 6-5 win over Felician, Holweger was 2-for-3 at the plate. Her three-run triple in the fifth helped pave the way for the win. In last Sunday’s 3-2 loss to Clafin, Holweger delivered an RBI double to tie the game 2-2.

Freshman Lauren Quense (Neshaminy) picked up her second win of the season in Fordham’s 2-1 win over Syracuse on Sunday in Orlando, Fla., allowing three hits while walking two and fanning seven. It is the third complete game for the freshman hurler. In eight appearances, Quense has a 1.46 earned run average.

Jess Schuck (Council Rock South) knocked in three runs with a two-run single and an RBI groundout in West Chester’s 14-6 win over Chowan on Sunday in game one of a twinbill. Lauren Altenburger (Neshaminy) was 3-for-4 at the plate. Erin Quense (Neshaminy) also had a pair of RBI on the day for the Golden Rams, who scored 14 runs and 12 hits. In the nightcap, West Chester earned a 1-0 win, escaping a two-on and one-out jam when Quense threw out a would-be base stealer. In West Chester’s 6-2 loss to UVA-Wise on Saturday, Megan Kelly (Hatboro-Horsham) delivered a two-run single. Schuck also had a hit. In the Golden Rams’ 2-0 loss to UVA-Wise, Quense and Ali Vavala (Central Bucks East) accounted for West Chester’s only two hits.

Sam Creamer (Neshaminy) was 2-for-3 in Cornell’s 9-5 loss to Army at the 2014 Patriot Classic in Fairfax, Va., on Saturday.

Freshman Heather Lutz (Hatboro-Horsham) doubled and scored a run and teammate Stephanie Kulp (North Penn) delivered an RBI double in Millersville’s 6-5 win over Chowan at the Shaw Challenge last Sunday. Maria Spinosa (Hatboro-Horsham) plated Lutz with a sacrifice fly to center.

Junior Liz Parkins (Souderton) led Shippensburg to a 5-1 win over Virginia State in last Sunday’s opener. The Souderton grad allowed three hits and one run while striking out five in a complete game effort.

Freshman Christina Bascara (Pennsbury) was a perfect 4-for-4 day at the plate with two runs scored in La Salle’s 12-0 win over Norfolk State last Sunday.

MEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
Zach Brech (Upper Dublin)
was part of Towson’s 400-yard medley relay that posted a time of 3:18.35 at the 2014 Colonial Athletic Association Championships, breaking the school record of 3:21.02 in 2004. Brech was also part of the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:30.34, breaking the previous Towson record of 1:31.76 set in 2003. He also was part of the 200 freestyle relay that placed fifth with a time of 1:21.98, breaking the school record of 1:21.99 set in 2009 by .01 seconds. In the one-meter dive, Alex Cohen (Abington) set another school record, besting his own mark with 377.45 points to win the individual title. He was named the meet’s Most Outstanding Diver after also winning the three-meter competition with a score of 325.70.

Bloomsburg’s Pat Stasio (Hatboro-Horsham) finished 14th in the 100 freestyle with a time of 47.99 at the 2014 PSAC Championships last weekend. Tyler Washington (Central Bucks West) was 16th in the 200 breast with a time of 2:13.25.

Gettysburg junior Ashton Leyens (Upper Dublin) earned first team All-Centennial Conference honors in the 200 freestyle relay, the 400 freestyle relay and the 800 freestyle relay. Sean Staerk (Abington) earned first team  honors as a member of the 800 free relay. Gettysburg won its fourth straight Centennial Conference title and 12th overall.

Gettysburg sophomore Ian Scullion (Central Bucks South) finished seventh in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 16:45.69 at the Centennial Conference Championships.

Ursinus freshman Dylan Cooper (William Tennent) finished 13th in the 1650 free with a time of 17:12.83 at the 2014 Centennial Conference Championships last weekend. Freshman Spencer Collopy (North Penn) finished 13th in the 100 free with a time of 48.85.

Dave Derr (Upper Dublin) posted a school record time in the 200 backstroke consolations at the A-10 Championships last weekend with a time of 1:47.76. He also was part of the 400 freestyle relay team that finished seventh with a time of 3:04.32.

Penn State junior TJ Schenkel (Council Rock South) qualified for the ‘B’ final in the three-meter diving event with a score of 322.15 and improved his mark to 349.00 in the evening final session to finish 14th overall. It was the first time the junior qualified for the evening session at the Big 10 Championship. Bob Bantley (Upper Dublin) was part of the 800 freestyle relay team that obliterated the school record and posted an NCAA ‘A’ standard tie of 6:23.00, improving on the previous record of 6:28.11 by over five seconds.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
Towson University sophomore Natalee Szopo (Upper Moreland) was the Tigers’ top finisher in the one-meter diving event, placing third at the 2014 Colonial Athletic Association Championships with 305.05 points. Szopo scored 355.30 in the preliminaries of the three-meter diving, smashing the Towson record of 345.23 in 2011. Szopo posted a score of 341.70 in the finals to place third overall.

Gettysburg junior Ellie Houser (Upper Dublin) placed fourth in the 200 backstroke at last weekend’s Centennial Conference Championships, posting a time of 2:09.82. Senior Ali Roth (Central Bucks West) finished sixth in the 100 freestyle with a time of 53.45. Sophomore Sam Evangelista (Central Bucks South) placed eighth in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:17.32.

Dickinson’s Emily Houser (Upper Dublin) placed fourth in the 200 backstroke at the 2014 Centennial Conference Swimming Championships last weekend, posting a time of 2:09.82, just 46 hundredths of a second off the school mark.

Franklin & Marshall’s Taylor Mateja (Upper Merion) finished first in the consolations and ninth overall in the 200 backstroke at the Centennial Conference Championships last weekend, posting a time of 2:11.03.

Ursinus junior Chelsea Kozior (Council Rock South) earned first team All-Centennial Conference honors as a member of both the winning 400 and 800 free relay teams. In the ‘A’ final of the Centennial Conference Championships last weekend, Kozior was part of the 400 relay that set a conference, championship record and NCAA B cut time of 3:31.33. Freshman Marisa Ferrari (Central Bucks East) was part of the 400 free relay that won the B final with a time of 3:36.73. Ursinus captured its first Centennial Conference title.

Millersville senior Amanda Thomas (William Tennent) placed 29th in the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.57 at the 2014 PSAC Championships last weekend.

Bloomsburg’s Alex Wheatley (Upper Dublin) finished seventh in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:07.62 at the 2014 PSAC Championships last weekend.

TRACK & FIELD
University of Pittsburgh freshman Chris Spadaro (Council Rock South) placed eighth overall in the men’s long jump finals at the ACC Championships on Saturday with a distance of 7.12m (23’4.5”), improving on his preliminary distance of 7.02m (23’0.5”). Spadaro also finished ninth in the triple jump.

Johns Hopkins junior Michael Spadaro (Council Rock South) finished third in the pole vault (3.80m) at the Centennial Indoor Track Championships on Saturday. He also went on to win the triple jump with a leap of 45'1.50" (13.75m), and he set the conference record in the heptathlon, totaling 4,552 points to win the event. Johns Hopkins won its second straight Centennial Conference indoor team title.

WRESTLING
Ursinus junior Richard Jasinski (Pennridge) earned first team All-Centennial Conference honors at 157 pounds. Jaskinski is a repeat first team selection. Ursinus captured its 11th Centennial Conference championship last Saturday.

Kutztown redshirt sophomore Matt Martoccio (Council Rock South) defeated Gannon’s Buddy Blotzer at 157 for the second time this season to extend his winning streak to five at Saturday’s NCAA Division II Super Region I Championship, this time winning by a 9-5 decision. Martoccio improved on his fifth place regional finish with a fourth place showing. In his first match on Sunday, Martoccio fell 3-1 with an opposing takedown with 2.6 seconds left in the third period. He responded with a tight 5-2 win to put him in the third place match for a chance to qualify for nationals for the first time of his career. He went on to drop a 3-2 decision to Seton Hill’s Zach Voyteck as Martoccio finished in fourth place, the best of his career, with 14 wins.
