BASEBALL
Senior Mike Albert (Pennsbury) was 4-for-4 in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 9-8 win over Immaculata in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday. The Griffins won the first game 3-0 to sweep the twinbill.
Chestnut Hill junior Alex Latchum (Central Bucks South) garnered an honorable mention for the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Player of the Week award. The Griffins’ leftfielder, who is adapting to his new lead-off role, batted .364 (4-for-11) and recorded two RBIs last week, including the game winner in a 13-inning non-conference marathon against the University of the Sciences.
Senior first baseman Mike Knipe (Pennridge) contributed a pair of hits in Chestnut Hill’s 5-4 loss to West Chester on Tuesday.
Scott Runzer (Council Rock North) had a pair of hits, including a double, and two RBIs in Bloomsburg’s 9-3 win over West Chester on Saturday. Teammate Keith Meyer (Council Rock South) added a hit and scored a run.
Sophomore Matt Albaugh (North Penn) was part of Kutztown’s trip to the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship in North Carolina last season. The Golden Bears, who won 42 games last year, graduated three starters from that squad, and Albaugh is one of several underclassmen who have stepped up to the challenge on this year’s team. In his freshman season, Albaugh split games at catcher, finishing the season with a .230 batting average, two home runs, 15 runs scored and 22 RBIs. Through 18 games this season, Albaugh is hitting .304. He has 14 hits, eight RBIs and is fifth on the team with five doubles. He has five multi-hit games this season. Behind the plate, Albaugh has thrown out four runners in 16 games. Albaugh is one of two sophomores featured in an article on Kutztown’s web site. In Kutztown’s sweep of Shippensburg on Saturday, Albaugh had four hits in the two games combined. Kutztown won the first game 11-3 and took the second by a 7-3 score. In Kutztown’s 12-1 win over Shippensburg on Friday, Albaugh was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate for his sixth multi-hit game of the season. He also hit his first home run of the season in game one – a 6-4 loss to the Raiders. Teammate James Quigley (Bensalem) had a pair of singles (1 RBI) in the 12-1 win to extend his hitting streak to four games. He is now batting .338 this season and leads the team with nine multi-hit games. Kutztown was ranked sixth in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Atlantic Region top 10 poll.
Zach Huff (Pennridge) threw a scoreless fifth – striking out the side – to earn the win on the mound in La Salle’s 4-0 win over Villanova on Tuesday. Kevin Christy (North Penn) also tossed a scoreless frame. Adam Kammler (Pennridge) contributed an RBI single and Jon Gyles (Central Bucks West) delivered a sacrifice fly. On Saturday, Gyles contributed an RBI double in La Salle’s 5-3 loss to Fordham. The loss snapped a program-best nine-game winning streak.
On March 21, Gyles was named La Salle’s Student-Athlete of the Week. The CB West alum went 5-for-16 (.313) with a double and seven RBIs the previous week, helping La Salle win all five of its games. Gyles’ best performance came the preceding Friday against Manhattan. Trailing 5-0 heading into the ninth, Gyles capped off a furious six-run rally with a walk-off two-run single to give the Explorers the dramatic win. In Saturday’s doubleheader against Saint Peter’s, Gyles connected on a bases-clearing three-run double and finished with four RBIs in another dramatic 7-6 walk-off game that lasted 10 innings. Overall, Gyles reached base safely 11 times during the week with five hits, four walks and two hit by pitches.
Shane Petrellis (Council Rock South) has been one of the most effective starting pitchers in the La Salle rotation this season, leading the staff with a 1.73 ERA and a 2-1 record through five appearances. Sophomore Matt Hone (Council Rock North) delivered a two-run single in Widener’s 8-5 win over Swarthmore on Tuesday.
University of Rhode Island sophomore Mike Bradstreet (North Penn) has made nine appearances on the mound this season. He is 1-0 with an earned run average of 2.93 in 15 innings pitched.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Senior Chris McDevitt (Central Bucks West) was one of six Widener student-athletes named to the Middle Atlantic Conference Winter Sportsmanship Teams. The teams include a player from each squad who demonstrates exceptional sportsmanship through their actions on and off the field during the season. McDevitt capped a successful four-year career with a productive season, helping the Pride reach the Commonwealth Conference semifinals after a one-year hiatus. McDevitt led the team and finished sixth in the league with a .405 three-point field goal percentage. He also closed fourth on the team and 26th in the conference with 8.4 points per game as well as tied for second on the squad and 12th in the league with 2.2 assists per game.
FIELD HOCKEY
Bloomsburg senior Julia Rush (Quakertown) was recognized by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) with her selection to the Division II National Academic Squad. She is a four-year recipient of the award. Rush was named a second team All-American this season after playing a crucial role in the Huskies’ defensive success. The senior helped to limit opponents to just 6.7 shots on goal per game. Rush also contributed a goal for the Huskies.
MEN’S LACROSSE
Freshman midfielder Shawn Caven (Pennsbury) had seven ground balls and was 9-for-16 from the X in Ursinus College’s 7-5 win over Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday.
Sophomore Chris Bracht (Council Rock South) scored a goal while teammate Ryan Mawhinney (Neshaminy) contributed an assist in Penn State Abington’s 17-5 loss to Wells College on Saturday.
Heath Kupecky (Upper Merion) contributed three goals and two assists in Messiah College’s 11-9 win over Manhattanville College on Saturday.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Senior Colleen Dellostretto (Upper Moreland) scored two goals in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 11-7 win over Notre Dame on Tuesday.
Junior Leeann Pica (Neshaminy) was named a PSAC scholar-athlete, made the Dean’s List and was named to the Athletic Director’s Association (ADA) All-Academic Team. As a freshman, she finished third on the team with 25 goals and scored another 25 last year, placing her fourth on the team. This season, Pica has eight goals for the 4-2 Golden Bears, and she is featured this week on Kutztown’s web site. In Kutztown’s 11-8 loss to ninth-ranked Gannon on Saturday, Pica contributed a goal while teammate Justine Simonsen (Upper Moreland) led KU’s defense with six groundball pickups. In Friday’s 11-3 loss to sixth-ranked Mercyhurst, Pica scored a single goal.
Lindsey Urban (Central Bucks East) scored a pair of goals in Ursinus College’s 13-6 loss to Rowan on Thursday. Sophomore midfielder Elizabeth Chatburn (Upper Dublin) had two caused turnovers. Sophomore Jackie Kimmel (Hatboro-Horsham) had three saves in 16 minutes in goal. In Tuesday’s 20-3 loss to nationally-ranked The College of New Jersey, Urban scored one of her team’s goals. Kimmel, who split duties in goal, was credited with four saves.
Kate Smyth (Pennsbury) scored a goal in Lock Haven’s 13-6 win over Bloomsburg on Saturday. On Friday, Samantha Hurley (Council Rock South) contributed a goal while teammate Lindsay Walbrandt (Souderton) had four draw controls in Lock Haven’s 17-6 win over East Stroudsburg. East Stroudsburg was led by the two-goal, two-assist effort of Michelle Mangiaruga (North Penn). The Lady Eagles – 7-0 on the season – moved up two spots to No. 2 in the latest edition of the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) National Poll.
Mangiaruga and teammate Ali Green (North Penn) each scored a pair of goals in East Stroudsburg’s 15-13 win over IUP on Saturday.
Senior Karen Schnurr (Central Bucks South) matched her season-high with four goals in Shippensburg’s 13-10 loss to Slippery Rock on Saturday. Sophomore Roxanne Brown (Pennridge) added a single goal. On Friday, junior Ali Cross (Upper Dublin) scored two of Shippensburg’s first three goals and continued her success in the circle with a game-high six draw controls in the Raiders’ 14-7 win over Edinboro. Cross also picked up four groundballs and had two caused turnovers. Schnurr contributed a pair of goals while Brown also added a goal.
Freshman Aubrey Bossert (Wissahickon) scored a goal in Bloomsburg’s 14-3 win over IUP on Friday. In Bloomsburg’s 9-8 loss to West Chester on Monday, Bossert contributed a goal.
Kelsey Schmoltze (Upper Moreland) scored two goals in Millersville’s 9-5 win over Edinboro on Saturday. Goalie Courtney Haggerty (Hatboro-Horsham) turned away 10 shots for the Marauders. On Friday, Schmoltze had two goals in Millersville’s 17-7 loss to Slippery Rock. Haggerty turned away nine shots and picked up a team-high six ground balls.
Freshman Amy Cross (Upper Dublin) scored a goal to knot the score 2-2 early in Saturday’s Big East opener against Rutgers. Her goal sparked a 7-2 run in the 11th-ranked Orange’s 11-7 win over the Scarlet Knights.
Lauren McDermott (North Penn) scored a goal in La Salle’s 10-9 loss to California on Friday.
Senior Mary Dean (Cheltenham) contributed the hat trick in Penn State’s 17-8 win over No. 16 William & Mary on Sunday afternoon in Williamsburg, Va. The win was the fifth straight for the streaking Nittany Lions. On Wednesday, freshman Lauren Purvis (Hatboro-Horsham) scored her first career goal in Penn State’s 17-9 win over Lafayette. Dean also contributed a goal.
SOFTBALL
With the tying run on second base, closer Deanna Dungee (North Penn) ended the threat with a strikeout to propel Alvernia to a 6-4 win over Neumann on Sunday. Alvernia won the second game of the twinbill 7-0 to earn the sweep. On Saturday, Dungee worked five innings in relief, allowing six hits and two runs to lead Alvernia to an 8-7 win in eight innings over Lebanon Valley. Dungee, who improved to 3-0 on the mound, also contributed a single and scored a run.
Senior Jackie Waddle (Neshaminy) was 3-for-3 with one RBI and a run scored in Goldey-Beacom’s 8-0 win over Lincoln University on Tuesday.
Moira Johnsen (Council Rock North) had three hits – including a double – and three RBIs in Shippennsburg’s 8-7 win over Millersville on Saturday. She also scored a run. Alicia Hughes (Quakertown) worked 5.2 innings in relief for Millersville, striking out six while allowing three runs. Shippensburg swept the twinbill, winning game two 1-0. Deanna Schneiderreit (William Tennent) had three hits to lead Millersville.
On Friday, Johnson had three hits – including a two-run homer in the 10th inning – to propel Shippensburg to a 3-1 win over 19th-ranked Kutztown. The Raiders completed the doubleheader sweep with a 5-2 win in game two. Johnson – who finished the twinbill with four hits and four RBIs - contributed an RBI single in a three-run sixth.
On Tuesday, Schneiderreit had one of her team’s two hits in Millersville’s 4-0 loss to Kutztown in game two of a twinbill with Kutztown. Kutztown won game one 8-2.
Junior Samantha Schoell (North Penn) delivered an RBI single in Temple’s 7-1 win over defending Atlantic 10 Conference champion UMass on Saturday. UMass won the second game of the twinbill 12-2.
Beth Everist (North Penn) collected three hits – including a double - and two RBIs in Mount St. Mary’s 9-8 win in 10 innings over UMES last Sunday, propelling the Mount into the championship game of the Demarini Capital Classic. Teammate Courtney Zingle (Hatboro-Horsham) contributed an RBI double and scored a run. Pitcher Amanda Sadowl (Hatboro-Horsham) worked six strong innings on the mound in relief, allowing five hits and one run while striking out five. The game ended in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the 10th when Zingle came up firing to pitcher Nicole Pagano after snagging a fly ball in right field. Pagano’s throw to the plate beat the runner trying to score from third for the final out of the game. The Mount fell to Delaware State 2-0 in the title game. Everist moved into third place for career RBIs with 72. On Saturday, the Mount dropped a pair of games in its own tournament, falling to Bucknell 4-2 and Cornell 4-3. Zingle paced the Mountaineers with three hits and one run scored in two games.
Senior Erin Holloway (Souderton) allowed two runs on three hits while striking out nine and walking just two to earn her 11th win of the season in IUP’s 10-2 win in six innings over Mercyhurst on Saturday. IUP took game two 12-6 to extend its winning streak to 11 in a row. Holloway closed out that game as well, striking out two and walking one. On Tuesday, Holloway notched the win in IUP’s 3-0 win over Mansfield, allowing just two hits in seven innings while striking out 12 batters and walking just one. Dee Eppinger (North Penn) broke a scoreless tie with a sacrifice fly in the fifth that also included an infield single by Mary Ward (North Penn). In IUP’s 2-0 win over Mansfield in the second game of the twinbill sweep, Eppinger delivered a two-out single that plated a pair of runs. IUP is ranked No. 14 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll.
MEN’S TENNIS
Lee Wexler (Plymouth Whitemarsh) and Tyler Pultro earned an 8-2 win at third doubles in Bloomsburg’s 7-2 win over Wilkes University on Tuesday.
Daniel Lee (Abington) defeated Kevin Bates at No. 5 singles 6-3, 6-3 in The College of New Jersey’s 7-2 win over Hobart College on Saturday. On Friday, Lee earned a 6-7 (3-7), 6-0, 6-2 win at sixth singles in TCNJ’s 5-4 win over New York University. On Tuesday, Lee notched a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles in TCNJ’s 8-0 win over Muhlenberg.
Freshman Ross Garabedian (Hatboro-Horsham) and teammate Julius Twyman earned an 8-4 win at three doubles in Chestnut Hill’s 8-1 win over Post University on Saturday.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Millersville junior Keith Ogden (Cheltenham) posted a time of 11.21 seconds in the 100-meter dash to finish first in his heat at Friday’s opening day of the Raleigh Relays. The time was not good enough to put him in the finals, but it was fast enough to earn his first PSAC qualifying time of the season. He earned his second PSAC qualifying mark in the 400-meter hurdles, sprinting to a time of 54.76 seconds to finish 19th out of 70 competitors. Seth Hibbs (Hatboro-Horsham) picked up a PSAC qualifying mark in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:03.34.
Widener freshman Michael Quinn (Plymouth Whitemarsh) finished 22nd with a time of 15.51.31 in the 5,000-meter run at the Big 5 Invitational on Saturday.
Bloomsburg’s Joe Pesci (Central Bucks West) finished fifth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.86 at the Jim Taylor Invitational at Susquehanna University on Saturday.
Shippensburg senior Sean Stetler (Central Bucks South) set a school record in the 3K with a time of 8:26.73 at the Fred Hardy Invitational on Saturday. Kyle Raguz (Central Bucks South) and Eric Wolfe (Central Bucks East) were part of the 4x400 relay team that finished first. Dan Dreeman (Council Rock South) was part of the 4x800 relay team that finished second.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Ursinus junior Amy Schaefer (Central Bucks South) finished first in the pole vault with a jump of 2.89 meters at the Goucher Invitational on Saturday. Ursinus finished first in the team standings with 224.50 points, nearly 85 points more than second place Salisbury.
Millersville’s Michelle Blum (Central Bucks East) picked up a PSAC qualifying mark at Saturday’s Raleigh Relays in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 5:02.12.
Lock Haven’s Christy Ohmott (Hatboro-Horsham) was third in the pole vault with a mark of 10-00.00 at this weekend’s Virginia Military Institute and Washington & Lee Track & Field Carnival. Teammate Vanita Moses (Neshaminy) took first in the hammer throw with a toss of 155-05.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Freshman Austin Jacoby (Pennridge) recorded his third double-double of the season with 14 kills and 13 digs to lead Sevenson to its sixth straight win on Saturday – a 3-1 win over Kean.
Senior Jonathan Landis (Pennridge) contributed 12 kills and seven digs in Stevens Institute of Technology’s 3-1 win over Elmira in Saturday’s opening round of the United Volleyball Conference Championships. In Stevens’ 3-2 loss to New Paltz in the semifinals, Landis had 10 kills and three blocks.
Senior Justin Brubaker (Souderton) contributed 22 kills and two aces in Philadelphia Biblical’s 3-1 loss to fourth-ranked Juniata on Friday. On Tuesday, Brubaker had 19 kills and seven digs in Philadelphia Biblical’s 3-0 loss to SUNY New Paltz. Teammate Ethan Mawhinney (Neshaminy) had three block assists.
