BASEBALL
Freshman Matt Hone (Council Rock North) contributed a single, triple and two RBIs in Widener’s 14-12 win over Johnson & Wales on Thursday. Hone had three hits, including a double and RBI, in Widener’s 21-9 loss by Rose-Hulman on Wednesday. Hone was 3-for-3 with two RBI in Widener’s 19-9 win over No. 13 Farmingdale State.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Junior Lavoy Allen (Pennsbury) was named the Philadelphia Big 5 Player of the Week for the week ending Feb. 28. Allen, who led the #16/20 Owls to a 2-0 week, earns his fourth Big 5 honor of this season and sixth career Player of the Week award. Allen averaged 13 points, 19 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 blocks per game in helping the Owls extend their win streak to five games. He scored nine points and grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds to lead Temple to a 49-41 win over preseason Atlantic 10 Conference favorite Dayton on Feb. 24. He followed that with his 11th double-double of the season, scoring 17 points and grabbing a career-high 21 rebounds in a 65-53 win at LaSalle, which clinched the program’s fifth perfect 4-0 Big 5 championship season and first since 1987-88. It marked the first time a Temple player pulled down 20 rebounds in a game since Joe Newman pulled down 24 against Drexel on Feb. 5, 1973. The Pennsbury alum is on pace to become the first Temple player to average a double-double since Ollie Johnson accomplished the feat in 1970-71. He leads the team with a 10.9 rebound average while scoring at an 11.5 clip.
Thomas Young (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored 18 of his game-high 25 points in the second half to lead fifth-ranked IUP to an 84-73 win over Kutztown. It is IUP’s first PSAC men’s basketball championship since 2004. In IUP’s 67-63 win over ESU in the semifinals, Young hit two free throws with 41 seconds left to snap a 63-63 tie and cap a 23-point performance.
Freshman Jim Connolly (Souderton) had 22 points in Philadelphia University’s 74-64 win over Chestnut Hill College on Monday to advance to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference semifinals.
Senior guard Robby Pines (Souderton) had 11 points, eight assists, six rebounds and three steals in East Stroudsburg’s 67-63 loss to No. 5 IUP in the PSAC semifinals on Friday. Pines moved into second place in single season assists in ESU history with 187. He also moved into sixth in career assists (304) and into the top 10 with 121 steals and is in the top 10 in Division II with 6.4 assists per game this season. In ESU’s 76-65 win over Cheyney in the PSAC quarterfinals, Pines scored six points.
Kutztown junior forward Ryan Washington (Wissahickon) was third in scoring and rebounding in the PSAC during the regular season, averaging 18.1 points a game and 9.9 rebounds. He also was third in field goal percentage (.606) and second in blocked shots (2.5). IUP’s Thomas Young was seventh in scoring, averaging 16.1.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Sophomore Casey Pritz (Abington) scored eight points in Widener’s 77-51 win over Gwynedd-Mercy in the ECAC South Tournament quarterfinals.
FIELD HOCKEY
Bloomsburg seniors Caitlin Koczynski (Neshaminy), Breanne Tobin (Pennridge) and Julia Rush (Quakertown) were named to the 2009 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II National Academic Squad.
East Stroudsburg senior Jennifer Mullen (Hatboro-Horsham) was named to the 2009 NFHCA National Academic Squad.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Jenny Collins (North Penn) has been named a recipient of the Weaver-James-Corrigan Award, the Atlantic Coast Conference announced last week. Collins has spent five seasons in College Park after serving a redshirt year as a freshman. The senior had a breakout year in 2009, scoring seven goals in 11 matches for the ACC champion Terrapins while helping guide Maryland all the way to the NCAA Final Four. In addition, she also serves as president of Maryland’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. The Weaver-James-Corrigan scholarship is awarded to selected student-athletes – three from each league institution – who intend to pursue a graduate degree following completion of their undergraduate requirements. Each recipient has performed with distinction in both the classroom and in his/her respective sports, while demonstrating exemplary conduct in the community.Junior Michelle Mangiaruga (North Penn) was the top scorer on last year’s East Stroudsburg squad and will anchor this year’s squad that is picked to finish third in the PSAC. Last year, Mangiaruga, a first team all-PSAC East selection, contributed 47 goals and 12 assists. Freshman Ali Green (North Penn) is also expected to be a key contributor during her first year. Senior Lindsay Moyer (Pennridge), who scored 14 goals last year, will also see action up front. Jamie Wesztergom (Springfield) and senior Sara Foley (Neshaminy) are two of four returning starters in the midfield. Freshmen Lauren Hummel (North Penn) and Jennifer Kelly (Abington) are projected starters.
Shippensburg, which is picked to finish fourth in the Eastern Division of the PSAC preseason coaches poll, includes a pair of SOL alums. Junior Karen Schnurr (Central Bucks South) will helped anchor the defense. Senior Gayle Kuntzmann (Hatboro-Horsham) received her second consecutive first team award last season after scoring 36 goals, picking up 38 ground balls to lead Shippensburg. She also recorded 40 caused turnovers, the fifth most in Division II.
Freshman Lauren McDermott (North Penn) scored three goals in LaSalle’s 13-3 win over Presbyterian College on Thursday.
SOFTBALL
Widener sophomore Moira Johnson (Council Rock South) delivered a two-run single in Shippensburg’s 12-4 loss to South Dakota on Saturday.
East Stroudsburg sophomore Rachel Gieringer (Hatboro-Horsham) hit .313 with a pair of doubles in last weekend’s season-opening Catawba Invitational. The Warriors were 1-4 on their North Carolina trip.
Virginia’s Nicole Koren (William Tennent) has a team-best four home runs and eight RBI to go along with her .367 batting average after 11 games. Koren hit two home runs in an 11-3 loss to Notre Dame. Koren threw one inning in Virginia’s 9-1 win over George Washington, striking out a pair. In Virginia’s 6-0 win over GW, Koren threw a complete game with seven strikeouts and also collected a hit.
Kirsten Allen (Central Bucks West) contributed an RBI double in Maine’s 2-1 win over St. Francis on Thursday.
Amanda Sadowl (Hatboro-Horsham) tossed a five-inning shutout in Mount St. Mary’s 9-0 win over North Carolina Central in non-league action on Tuesday. Sadowl allowed three hits and struck out three. It is her third career shutout. Teammate Beth Everist (Lansdale) contributed an RBI in the third inning. In the Seahawks Classic one week earlier, Everest had two hits, including her first home run of the year, and two RBIs, in Mount St. Mary’s 10-1 win over Gardner-Webb in the title game. Everest moved into ninth place with five career home runs. Teammate Courtney Zingle (Hatboro-Horsham) added two hits and two runs. . In Mount St. Mary’s 3-2 win over St. Bonaventure, Zingle was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. In five games, Zingle had nine hits and five runs scored and was named to the all-tournament team.
Erin Holloway (Souderton) allowed just four hits while striking out eight and walking three in IUP’s 3-0 win over Saint Xavier on Saturday.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Widener senior James Green (North Penn) finished second in the shot put with a throw of 15.06 meters at the ECAC Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Senior Sean Stetler (Central Bucks South) capped off a breakthrough indoor meet by winning Shippensburg’s first conference championship in the 3K since 2005, posting a time of 8:25.84 to win by more than two seconds.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Senior Nikita Halteman (North Penn), a two-time MAC indoor champion in the shot put, closed fourth in that event in 12.40 meters at the ECAC Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Freshman Victoria Gocht (Upper Dublin) was part of Temple’s 4x400 relay team that ran its best time of the season at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational (3:45.5). Gocht bettered her school record and nearly met NCAA provisional marks in the 800m with a time of 2:09.09.
