BASEBALL
Jared Weed (Council Rock North) notched the win on the mound in IUP’s 6-3 win over Mercyhurst. The freshman hurler allowed just one hit and did not allow a run in 5.1 innings in relief. IUP swept the twinbill from Mercyhurst, winning the first game 7-6 in eight innings.
Chris Edgar (North Penn) collected a pair of hits and drove in two runs in Millersville’s 13-5 win over Shippensburg in the first game of a doubleheader sweep on Friday. The Marauders won game two 8-3. On Thursday, Edgar had three hits, including a triple, in Millersville 10-4 win over Mansfield in the second game of a twinbill sweep. Millersville moved into the top 10 in the most recent NCBWA poll and entered the top 20 of both the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and College Baseball Lineup polls. The Marauders moved up three spots to No. 9 in the NCBWA National Top 25 for their first appearance in the top 10. Millersville also held on to the No. 1 spot in the NCBWA Atlantic Region for the third week in a row. Millersville entered the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Poll, which is voted on by coaches, for the first time last week, and it moved six spots this week from No. 26 to No. 20. In the College Baseball Lineup Division II Top 30 Rankings, the Marauders moved up eight spots from No. 28 to No. 20.
Eric Blood (Pennridge) collected three hits, drove in three runs and scored two runs in Chestnut Hill’s 14-4 win over Philadelphia University on Thursday. Alex Latchum (Central Bucks South) had a pair of hits and scored a run, and teammate Ray Puskar (Pennridge) also had two hits, drove in one run and scored a run. Andrew Donofry (Hatboro-Horsham) delivered a solo home run in the sixth inning. Mike Knipe (Pennridge) contributed an RBI and scored a run.
Julian Faria (Pennsbury) homered and drove in five runs – four of them on one swing of the bat when he hit a grand slam as part of a six-run fifth that gave Alvernia the lead for good in its 14-10 win over Misericordia on Thursday. In Friday’s 5-4 win over Widener, Faria doubled and scored a run. In Friday’s 5-4 win over Alvernia, Faria contributed a hit and scored a run.
Andy Noga (Cheltenham) received national recognition on Tuesday for his contributions to East Stroudsburg’s 20-7 record going into this week’s games. The redshirt sophomore leads Division II in fewest walks per nine innings and ranks 29th in ERA in last week’s national statistics. The right-hander has issued three walks in 42.1 innings, an average of 0.64 for a nine-inning game, and he had not walked a batter in 21.0 innings against the PSAC East. He has a 5-1 record and is third in the PSAC with a 1.70 ERA in seven starts this season. ESU is ranked No. 3 in the latest NCBWA Atlantic Region poll. On Friday, Noga absorbed his second loss of the season, allowing seven hits and seven runs in three innings in East Stroudsburg’s 11-5 loss to Bloomsburg.
Sophomore pitcher Jake Kohler (Upper Dublin) pitched the final 4.1 innings of Ursinus College’s 6-3 loss to Haverford on Friday, scattering just two hits. In Thursday’s 16-13 come-from-behind win, Kohler pitched a scoreless ninth to record the save. In last Sunday’s 7-6 win over Franklin & Marshall, Kohler started and pitched 5.1 innings, allowing six runs and four hits. Sophomore southpaw A.J. Wright (Council Rock South) pitched the seventh and eighth innings and did not allow a hit.
Junior Ryan Brown (Souderton) delivered a walk-off three-run home run to lead Messiah to a dramatic 7-6 win over Elizabethtown on Friday. It was the second walk-off hit in five games for Brown, who has batted six times this year as the potential tying or go-ahead run in the last inning – he is 5-for-6 with a double, home run and seven RBIs in those situations. In the win over E-town, Brown also had a walk, a single and tagged out two runners at the plate while catching. In Monday’s 6-5 win over Widener, Brown delivered a walk-off single. Teammate Drew Frankenfield (Wissahickon) singled and scored a run in Messiah’s 7-4 loss in the second game of the twinbill.
Senior Colin Tosti (Neshaminy) threw three-plus innings of scoreless relief to help Gwynedd-Mercy end a four-game skid in the Griffins’ 8-3 CSAC win over Neumann on Friday. Senior Jay Sechowicz (Council Rock South) contributed a solo home run. Starter John Barrington (Harry S. Truman) got out of two jams in the first and second innings, getting a key double play in the first and getting consecutive outs with runners on second and third.
Jon Gyles (Central Bucks West) extended his on-base streak to 33 games after he was hit by a pitch in the seventh inning of La Salle’s 3-1 loss to St. Bonaventure on Sunday. Kevin Christy (North Penn) and teammate Pat Christensen helped keep the game within reach with three scoreless innings in relief. In Friday’s 6-3 win over St. Bonaventure, Gyles contributed three hits. His RBI single in the fourth extended his on-base streak to 31 games, and La Salle was able to push across four runs in the frame to take a 4-1 edge. Gyles finishes the game 3-for-4 with one RBI. The junior also reached base safely with a hit in La Salle’s 7-4 win in game two, extending his streak to 32 games. In game two, Eric Kammler (Pennridge) delivered a two-run single in a three-run uprising in the first inning.
Jason Heryla (Pennsbury) picked up his first win of the season in Arcadia’s 14-5 win over Albright last Sunday, allowing four earned runs on 10 hits while striking out three and walking four. He helped himself by delivering a one-out single to ignite a four-run second inning.
Dan Garcia (Cheltenham) was 3-for-4 and reached base four times in Eastern University’s 10-2 win over Delaware Valley on Friday. On Wednesday, Garcia was 2-for-7 with a run scored in Eastern University’s 1-1 tie with Kings College in a contest that was suspended after 15 innings.
Freshman Brian Camp (Cheltenham) pitched a complete game shutout in Penn State Abington’s 6-0 win over SUNY Cobleskill last Sunday. Camp allowed just two hits in seven innings and struck out two. Sophomore Michael Corrigan (William Tennent) contributed an RBI single, and Will Erskine (North Penn) was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. He also stole a pair of bases. Corrigan and Erskine both singled and scored a run in game two of the twinbill, a 15-4 Penn State Abington win. Erskine also had an RBI. Senior Kevin Szafranski (Bensalem) contributed an RBI single and scored a run.
FIELD HOCKEY
Jennifer Mullen (Hatboro-Horsham) was named to East Stroudsburg’s 2010-11 Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.
FOOTBALL
In Temple’s Cherry and White Scrimmage on Saturday, Myron Myles (Wissahickon) scored on touchdown runs of eight and 14 yards and also hauled in a 21-yard touchdown pass for the White in its 27-26 win over the Cherry. Myles finished the game with 135 yards rushing and two TDs on 20 carries. He also caught three passes for 51 yards and one TD. Anthony Robey (Norristown) had three solo tackles for the White, which included one tackle for a loss. For the Cherry, Michael Doty (Central Bucks South) caught a 63-yard touchdown pass. Brandon McManus (North Penn) – the kicker for both teams – converted on five extra points.
East Stroudsburg redshirt senior Matt Freed (Souderton) was selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America first team in football for the second straight year. The senior linebacker is just the second student-athlete in school history to be so honored. He also was named to ESU’s 2010-11 Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.
MEN’S LACROSSE
Sophomore Heath Kupecky (Upper Merion) scored his team-leading 20th goal with 4.7 seconds left to play in overtime, propelling Messiah to a dramatic 11-10 win over Elizabethtown on Wednesday. Kupecky scored three goals in a contest that saw Messiah trail by three goals with six minutes remaining in regulation. It was Messiah’s eighth straight win.
Senior defender Greg Brown (Central Bucks West) forced a Towson turnover and set up a goal that evened the score at 5-5 in Penn State’s come-from-behind 7-6 win on Saturday. Brown finished the game with three groundballs and one assist.
Freshman midfielder Shawn Caven (Pennsbury) was 5-for-9 on face-offs in Ursinus College’s 4-3 loss to McDaniel on Saturday. In last Wednesday’s 9-8 win over Washington, Caven was 9-for-14 on face-offs and had six groundballs.
Freshman Craig Hunsberger (Pennridge) won 11-of-19 face-offs in Widener’s 19-7 win over Lebanon Valley on Saturday. The win was the seventh straight for the Pride, who remain perfect in MAC play with a 7-0 record (9-2 overall). In Widener’s 8-5 win over Eastern on Wednesday, sophomore Johnny Casey (Abington) contributed a goal.
Aurora University attackman Garret Rosiek (Wissahickon) was named Midwest Lacrosse Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending April 10, 2011. Rosiek, a freshman, led the Spartans to a 2-0 week with wins over Fontbonne University (7-6) and Hanover College (14-3). In the two games, Rosiek had two goals and seven assists, including two goals and four assists in the 14-3 win over Hanover. For the season, Rosiek has nine goals and a team-high 17 assists for 26 points, which is second most for the Spartans.
Rosiek had a pair of assists in Aurora’s 13-9 loss to Adrian College on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 19-2 win over Milwaukee School of Engineering, Rosiek had one goal and two assists.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Senior Michelle Mangiaruga (North Penn) was named the PSAC Lacrosse Athlete of the Week and East Stroudsburg University’s Championship Award Guys Athlete of the Week for the week ending April 12 after producing 10 goals and seven assists in two conference wins for the Warriors last week. She set a career-high in points in both games, contributing five goals and three assists in a 16-9 win at Millersville and followed that with five goals and four assists in a 17-10 win over Shippensburg. She also had six groundballs, three draw controls and four caused turnovers during the week. The senior midfielder had a hand in 17 of ESU’s 33 goals last week and produced at crucial points in both games. A two-time All-PSAC East first team selection and a member of the IWLCA All-Region team last year, Mangiaruga continues to move up ESU’s career scoring charts. After her big week, she was tied for fifth in goals (135), fifth in assists (54) and sixth in points (189) after a four-goal game in leading the Warriors to an 11-8 comeback win at Philadelphia University on Monday. She is the Warriors’ first PSAC Athlete of the Week this season and received the award for the first time in her career.
Mangiaruga contributed a goal and three assists in East Stroudsburg’s 13-6 win over Edinboro on Saturday. Junior Ali Green (North Penn) also contributed a goal. Mangiaruga has 35 goals and a team-high 24 assists this season. In Friday’s 13-11 loss to Slippery Rock, Mangiaruga contributed a goal. In Monday’s 11-8 win at Philadelphia University, Mangiaruga scored three of her four goals in the second half as ESU overcame a four-goal deficit to earn the win. Green also contributed a goal.
Senior Karen Schnurr (Central Bucks South) contributed a goal in Shippensburg’s 21-8 loss to No. 10 Gannon on Saturday. In Friday’s 19-14 loss to No. 12 Mercyhurst, sophomore Roxanne Brown (Pennridge) scored a goal. In Monday’s 13-12 win over Shepherd, Schnurr led the Raiders in scoring with her seventh hat trick of the season while also winning three draw controls. Junior Ali Cross (Upper Dublin) and Brown also scored for the Raiders.
Senior Mary Dean contributed a goal in No. 15 Penn State’s 11-10 double overtime win over Ohio State in Sunday’s Senior Day contest. In Tuesday’s 12-11 win over Lehigh, Dean also scored a goal.
Freshman Aubrey Bossert (Wissahickon) contributed a goal in No. 14 Bloomsburg’s 12-8 win over Edinboro on Friday. She also was credited with three groundballs.

Kendall Rood (Central Bucks East) contributed five goals and one assist in Eastern University’s 17-8 win over Lycoming on Saturday. In Thursday’s 17-6 non-league loss to Rowan, Rood scored a single goal.
Rachel Coyle (Souderton) forced a season-high seven turnovers in No. 15 Messiah’s 21-1 rout of Misericordia on Saturday. She also contributed three goals. It was the seventh straight win for Messiah. In Thursday’s 11-9 win No. 16 Elizabethtown, Rachel Dirksen (Abington) contributed three goals, two groundballs and two draw controls. Coyle had two groundballs and one draw control.
Alisha Aquilino (Abington) and teammate Kaitlin LaBarbera combined for eight saves in the net in St. Joe’s 9-3 loss to George Washington on Sunday.
Freshman Danielle Horn (North Penn) netted her first collegiate goal in La Salle’s 15-10 loss to St. Bonaventure on Friday. Teammate Lauren McDermott (North Penn) also scored a goal. In last Sunday’s 15-7 loss to George Washington, McDermott contributed a goal, and teammate Sara Ciaverelli (North Penn) was credited with five groundballs.
Leann Pica (Neshaminy) contributed three goals, one assist and two groundballs in Kutztown’s 17-2 win over Chestnut Hill on Monday. Teammate Jen Dunne (Central Bucks South) also contributed the hat trick and three ground balls. Emily Savini (Neshaminy) added a pair of goals, and Justine Simonsen (Upper Moreland) was credited with two groundballs. In Friday’s 17-10 loss to IUP, Savini and Simonsen both had three groundballs and Pica had one.
Sophomore midfielder Elizabeth Chatburn (Upper Dublin) had two goals in Ursinus College’s 13-8 loss to Drew on Tuesday night. In Saturday’s 8-7 overtime loss to McDaniel, Chatburn scored her ninth goal of the season. Senior attack Lindsey Urban (Central Bucks East) also contributed a goal.
Kate Smyth (Pennsbury) scored a pair of goals and teammate Lindsay Walbrandt (Souderton) added a single goal in No. 3 Lock Haven’s 17-3 win over Kutztown on Saturday. In Friday’s 13-12 loss to No. 7 West Chester, Smyth contributed an assist and one groundball while Walbrandt had two groundballs and two draw controls. Jackie Hoover (Cheltenham) contributed a goal for West Chester while teammate Jill Morris (North Penn) had two groundballs. In West Chester’s 17-15 win over IUP on Saturday, Hoover had a goal and an assist.

SOFTBALL
Amanda Sadowl (Hatboro-Horsham) earned the win on the mound in Mount St. Mary’s come-from-behind 6-5 win over UMBC on Thursday, working two scoreless innings in relief. Teammate Beth Everist (North Penn) was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Courtney Zingle (Hatboro-Horsham) added two hits and two runs scored. In the Mount’s 5-4 win in game one of the twinbill, Zingle delivered the game-winning hit, an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth that broke a 4-4 tie. Zingle finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Heather Hannum (Hatboro-Horsham) contributed a pair of hits, one RBI and also scored a run in Kutztown’s 4-1 win over East Stroudsburg on Thursday. Rachel Gieringer (Hatboro-Horsham) led ESU with two hits, including a double, and one RBI. Kutztown won the second game of the twinbill 3-0. Gieringer picked up ESU’s only hit. Geiringer was named to ESU’s 2010-11 Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.
Erin Holloway (Souderton) upped her record to 16-3 on the season, earning the win on the mound in IUP’s 3-2 win over Clarion on Sunday. The senior hurler allowed four hits and struck out nine, stranding the tying run on second after Clarion opened the seventh with consecutive doubles. Holloway increased her school-record win total to 67 and strikeout mark to 901 while becoming only the third pitcher in PSAC history to reach the 900-strikeout plateau. In IUP’s 7-0 win in game two of the twinbill, Dee Eppinger (North Penn) doubled and scored a run. Two runs scored on a grounder off the bat of Mary Ward (North Penn). In Friday’s 8-0 win over Lock Haven, Holloway tossed a five-inning shutout, allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out three. The Crimson Hawks took an early 2-0 lead, taking advantage of two Lock Haven errors in the bottom of the first on only one hit by Eppinger. Ward contributed a pair of hits and two RBIs in the win.
Deanna Schneiderreit (William Tennent) singled and scored a run in Millersville’s 11-6 loss to West Chester on Friday. Devon Utterback (Central Bucks South) was credited with the win. She is 13-5 on the season. West Chester won the second game of the doubleheader 2-1.
Junior Samantha Schoell (North Penn) contributed a double in Temple’s 7-0 win over La Salle on Friday in game one of a twinbill. She also had a hit in the Owls’ 5-0 win in the nightcap.
Deanna Dungee (North Penn) improved to 4-0 on the season, earning the win on the mound in Alvernia’s 10-0 win over Delaware Valley on Thursday. Dungee allowed just two hits in four scoreless innings. Alvernia won the second game 12-4 to earn the doubleheader sweep.
Junior Emily Parkins (Souderton) delivered an RBI double in a three-run fourth inning in Shippensburg’s 4-2 win over East Stroudsburg on Friday. The win completed a doubleheader sweep for the Raiders, who won the first game 5-1. Rachel Gieringer finished the day 3-for-8 to lead the Warriors. In the Raiders 5-4 win over Millersville on Thursday, Moira Johnsen (Council Rock North) contributed a single in a three-run seventh inning rally that propelled Shippensburg to the win. Millersville won game one of the twinbill 3-2.
MEN’S TENNIS
Tyler Pultro (Central Bucks West) was part of Bloomsburg’s number two doubles team that earned an 8-5 win in the Huskies’ 6-3 loss to Bloomsburg on Thursday.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
La Salle’s Nick Crits (Wissahickon) finished third in the 1500-meter run in last weekend’s Duke Invitational, posting an IC4A qualifying mark. Crits was part of the 4x800-meter relay team that finished second in the event and posted an IC4A qualifying time of 7:34.33. Teammate Paul Reilly (Upper Dublin) finished in the top 20 in the 1,500 as well. Reilly also was part of the 4x800-meter relay that finished fourth with a time of 7:36.44.
Millersville’s Kevin DiFlorio (Hatboro-Horsham) finished the 800-meter run with a time of 2:03.99 at this weekend’s Bison Classic. Keith Ogden (Cheltenham) was part of the 4x100-meter relay that placed sixth with a time of 44.83. Seth Hibbs (Hatboro-Horsham) ran a personal best in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:01.92, which is a PSAC qualifying time.
Ursinus College’s Robert Shuttle (North Penn) finished fourth in the shot put at the Cheyney Invitational on Wednesday with a throw of 38-09.
Penn State freshman Nick Scarpello (Central Bucks West) finished sixth in the 1500-meter run at the War Eagle Invitational at Auburn University this weekend, posting a time of 3:53.36.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Millersville’s Megan Meyer (Central Bucks South) posted a time of 2:25.52 in the 800-meter run at this weekend’s Bison Classic. Teammate Michelle Blum (Central Bucks East) was right behind with a time of 2:26.87. Meyer also ran a personal best in the 1,500-meter run, crossing the line with a PSAC qualifying time of 4:58.48. Blum also finished with a PSAC qualifying time of 4:59.26.
On the final day of the Mondschein multi-event, Millersville’s Jess Rhyner (Quakertown) placed sixth in the heptathlon. Rhyner, who totaled 2,208 points through the first four events, collected another 1,223 points on day two to finish sixth among the 10 competitors. She finished third in the long jump, reaching a distance of 4.87 meters to help her reach 3,431 total points in the heptathlon.
