BASEBALL
LaSalle sophomore first baseman Jon Gyles (Central Bucks West) has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference’s Player of the Week for an effort that included driving in 11 runs and scoring five runs. Gyles batted .615 in the three-game A-10 series against Temple, while posting a 1.154 slugging percentage and an on-base percentage of .706. He became just the 14th player in NCAA Division I this season to hit for the cycle.  Gyles also was named the Philadelphia Big 5 Player of the Week. In four games, he batted .529 (9-for-17) with a home run and 11 RBIs. He has 35 RBIs in 33 games this season. It is the second time he has received this honor.
Shortstop Tony Donofry (Council Rock North) was 4-for-4 and scored four times in Bloomsburg’s 15-9 win over Washington Adventist on Thursday. Teammate Keith Meyer (Council Rock South) had a two-run double in a four-run fifth inning. Bloomsburg won the second game 8-0.
Alex Latchum (Central Bucks South), Michael Knipe (Pennridge) and Eric Blood (Pennridge) each contributed a hit in Chestnut Hill’s 8-2 loss to East Stroudsburg on Monday. Latchum also had an RBI. In Chestnut Hill’s 22-1 loss to ESU, Latchum was a perfect 3-for-3. Teammate Joe Crane (Council Rock South) also contributed a hit and a stolen base.  On Wednesday, Blood recorded two hits in Chestnut Hill’s 4-3 win over Wilmington University. Donofry had a pinch hit single. Chestnut Hill won the first game 4-1. In Thursday’s 8-3 win over the University of Sciences, Knipe had a pair of hits while Donofry (2 RBIs), Blood and Crane each had a hit.
Freshman Matt Hone (Council Rock North) contributed an RBI single in Widener’s 4-1 win over Rowan on Wednesday.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Temple junior Lavoy Allen (Pennsbury) filed paperwork Friday to enter the 2010 NBA Draft. The 6-9 forward has not hired an agent, which allows him the option of retaining his eligibility. Underclassmen who have declared for the draft but have not hired agents have until May 8 to withdraw their names from consideration and retain their eligibility. Allen, a first team all-Atlantic Conference USBWA All-District performer, became the first Temple player to average a double-double since Ollie Johnson accomplished the feat in 1970-71, averaging 11.5 points and 10.7 rebounds per game. He led the team in rebounding, blocks (50) and field goal percentage (.536) while ranking third with 83 assists. Allen, who shared team MVP honors with Ryan Brooks, helped the Owls to a 29-6 record and a third straight A-10 Championship. Temple was ranked #12 in the final Associated Press poll.
FOOTBALL
Camryn LaSalle (Bensalem) scored on an 85-yard touchdown run in Shippensburg’s annual Red-White game on Friday.
MEN’S GOLF
Widener junior Chris Delaney (Norristown) finished in a tie for 15th at the Widener Invitational on Tuesday when he shot an 83. Widener finished sixth.
MEN’S LACROSSE
Sophomore Nate Meyer (Abington) scored a goal in Widener’s 15-7 loss to Lycoming on Saturday.
Heath Kupecky (Upper Merion) is a starter on attack for the Messiah lacarosse team. He is third on the team in points (18), second in assists (10), fourth in goals (8) and fourth in ground balls (23).
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
LaSalle freshman Lauren McDermott (North Penn) was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week for the third time this season. She is the third Explorer all-time to accomplish that feat. Last weekend, McDermott had seven points, including six goals. She has 39 points (34 goals and five assists) in her rookie season and is ranked fourth all-time at LaSalle among freshman scorers. She leads the Explorers with 30 draw controls and is second in goals scored. She finished the regular season ranked second among conference rookies in goals and 10th overall. McDermott, who helped lead the Explorers to their first ever A-10 championship appearance, was named to the second team all-Atlantic 10 Conference squad. She also earned a spot on the conference’s All-Rookie team and was named A-10 Rookie of the Year. In addition, McDermott received national recognition when she was named the Division I Rookie of the Week by WomensLacrosse.com.
Senior Gayle Kuntzmann (Hatboro-Horsham) scored four goals and also had six caused turnovers, five ground balls and five draw controls in Shippensburg’s 15-12 loss to No. 8 Gannon last Sunday.  Teammate Roxanne Brown (Pennridge) connected for her third goal of the season. Ali Cross (Upper Dublin) had four draw controls. In Wednesday’s 14-7 loss to Bloomsburg, Kuntzmann contributed a goal.
Lock Haven junior Allison Berger (Springfield) was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Player of the Week for the second straight week. Berger led the No. 2 Lady Eagles to three wins last week when she tallied a team-high 10 goals and 10 assists. Berger scored five goals and handed out three assists in Lock Haven’s 26-5 win over Slippery Rock on Wednesday. Teammate Kate Smyth (Pennsbury) added three goals and three assists.
Juniors Michelle Mangiaruga (North Penn) had two goals and a career-high three assists while Jamie Wesztergom (Springfield) had three goals and one assist in East Stroudsburg’s 16-8 win over Georgian Court last Sunday. Wesztergom’s hat trick was her third of year. Freshman Ali Green (North Penn) added a single goal. On Wednesday, Wesztergom scored three goals while Mangiaruga had two goals and two assists in ESU’s 16-9 loss to West Chester. In Saturday’s 12-9 win over Shippensburg, which clinched ESU’s second trip to the PSAC lacrosse playoffs in three seasons, Mangiaruga had two goals and two assists. Junior Karen Schnurr (Central Bucks South) scored Shippensburg’s first two goals. SU’s Roxanne Brown (Pennridge) connected for a goal that tied the game 8-8 with 12:07 to go. Shippensburg’s Kuntzmann closed out the season with 33 goals in 16 games, including three game-winners. She also is ranked among the top five in Division II with 43 caused turnovers and 47 ground balls.
The Warriors will face Bloomsburg in a PSAC quarterfinal game on Tuesday. Mangiaruga has contributed 36 goals and 16 assists despite missing two games due to injury midway through the season. Senior Lindsey Moyer (Pennridge) has contributed 14 goals and two assists while Sara Foley (Neshaminy) has added nine goals and two assists. Green, who has started all 17 games, has 10 goals and six assists. Wesztergom, a three-year starter, has 25 goals and four assists while ranking first or second on the team in caused turnovers (1st, 25), draw controls (t-1st, 38) and ground balls (2nd-49). Freshmen Jennifer Kelly (Abington) and Lauren Hummel (North Penn) have stepped into starting roles this season as well.
 Temple freshman Charlotte Swavola (Cheltenham) was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week for the week ending April 5. Swavola recorded a pair of hat tricks as Temple posted a 1-1 record. She scored three goals, including the game winner, in the Owls’ 14-12 win over #17 Princeton, halting an 0-11 streak versus Princeton since 1998. She also tallied a ground ball and had two draw controls. She also had the hat trick in Temple’s 16-7 loss to defending A-10 champion UMass and had three ground balls.
SOFTBALL
IUP’s Erin Holloway (Souderton) broke her own IUP single-season strikeout record while earning PSAC Central Pitcher of the Week honors. Holloway won three of four decisions during the week and had an ERA of 0.88 in a doubleheader sweep of Mansfield and a split with Lock Haven that clinched second place in the PSAC Central for IUP. She struck out 43 batters in 24 innings during the week, including 26 in only 11 innings vs. the Mountaineers. She had two shutouts. She leads the PSAC in strikeouts and batting average against at .158 and is third in wins, ERA and innings pitched with 176 1/3. She ranks first in IUP history with 684 career strikeouts, third in wins with 44, tied for fourth with 64 complete games, tied for second with 20 shutouts and fifth innings pitched with 508 1/3 and ERA at 2.13.
Holloway fanned 16 in 10 innings of work in IUP’s doubleheader sweep over Shepherd in its final regular season games. The Crimson Hawks set a new school record with 33 regular season wins against only eight losses with Holloway improving her record to 23-4. The junior righthander struck out 12 in a complete game four hitter in a 2-1 victory in the first game and then pitched three hitless innings in the nightcap.
On Friday, Holloway survived three East Stroudsburg homeruns to earn her 24th win of the season, leading IUP to a 12-6 win in the PSAC playoffs. IUP fell to California 7-2 later that day but rebounded to defeat California 14-9 to force a winner-take-all game for the right to earn a spot in the PSAC tournament final round. California won the rubber game 4-0 to eliminate the Crimson Eagles from the conference playoffs. In IUP’s 14-9 win, Dee Eppinger (North Penn) had two home runs while scoring four runs and contributing five RBIs. Holloway picked up her 25th win of the season despite allowing 15 hits and eight earned runs. She fanned eight.
Nicole Koren (Williams Tennent) contributed an RBI single in Virginia’s 5-2 win over Radford on Wednesday. The Cavaliers also won the second game 4-2.
Sophomore Rachel Gieringer (Hatboro-Horsham) contributed a pinch-hit single in the seventh inning of East Stroudsburg’s 4-1 win over Lock Haven on Tuesday. ESU won the first game 7-0. On Friday, ESU dropped a pair of games in the PSAC Softball Tournament, falling to IUP 12-6 and then dropping a 7-3 decision to No. 20 California. ESU hits three homeruns on the day, all against IUP. Gieringer hit her fourth of the year in the top of the first. She finished the game 2-for-2. Freshman Tegan Wendell (Abington) contributed an RBI single in the loss to IUP. She also had one of three hits in the second game.
Heather Hannum (Hatboro-Horsham) keyed a five-run first inning for Kutztown in its 10-3 win over Bloomsburg in an opening round game of the PSAC playoffs. Bloomsburg came back to defeat the Golden Bears 7-5.
Sophomore Amanda Sadowl (Hatboro-Horsham) moved into second place for wins in a year with 12 after earning the win in Mount St. Mary’s 11-3 win over George Mason on Wednesday. Sadowl allowed four hits while striking out two. Courtney Zingle (Hatboro-Horsham) singled and scored a run, moving into sixth place in runs scored in a season with 33.
MEN’S TENNIS
Junior Carson Richter (Plymouth Whitemarsh) concluded the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Men’s Tennis Individual Championship tournament in the doubles title match where he and his teammate fell 8-2. Richter earned all-conference status.
Daniel Lee (Abington) earned a 6-4, 6-3 win at sixth singles in The College of New Jersey’s 8-1 loss to #29 Bates College on Wednesday.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Katie Hasyn (North Penn) was part of Bloomsburg’s second doubles team that earned a 9-7 win over Slippery Rock, but the Huskies came out on the short end of a 5-2 score in the PSAC semifinals.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Shippensburg’s Eric Wolfe (Central Bucks) finished fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.79 at the 2010 Paul Kaiser Track and Field Classic. He was third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.69. Wolfe and Kyle Raguz (Central Bucks) were part of the 4x400 relay team that finished 10th with a time of 3:32.79.
Elizabethtown’s Matt Seeley (Souderton) finished 26th in the 5000-meter run with a time of 16:07.78 at the 2010 Paul Kaiser Track and Field Classic. Teammate Luke Rotenberger (Quakertown) finished ninth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 58.29. Chris Miles (Central Bucks South) was a member of the 4x400 relay team that finished ninth with a time of 44.00.
East Stroudsburg’s Alfred McHanley (Cheltenham) finished sixth in the long jump (19-6 ¾) at the Lehigh Games.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Kutztown’s Sarah Messner (Upper Dublin) finished fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.97 at the 2010 Paul Kaiser Track and Field Classic. She finished 10th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.14. Teammate Jill Kostishion (Pennridge) finished 11th in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:10.73.
East Stroudsburg’s Kayla Littrell (William Tennent) finished sixth in the 400-meter run with a time of 1:07.12 at the Lehigh Games.
Shippensburg’s Laura Henzy (Neshaminy) was eighth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.95 at the 2010 Paul Kaiser Track and Field Classic. She was part of the 4x400-meter relay team that finished first with a time of 3:51.31. Caitlin Steutz (Cheltenham) was second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.35. In the preliminaries, she turned in a time of 15.08. Krysten Goetter (Hatboro-Horsham) finished second in the shot put (11.80m), fifth in the discus (36.34m) and ninth in the hammer throw (40.23m). Teammate Amanda Emig (William Tennent) was 16th in the hammer throw (33.82m).
Gettysburg’s Christine Esposito (Neshaminy) finished 24th in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:31.78 at the 2010 Paul Kaiser Track and Field Classic. She was seventh in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:51.60.
Lebanon Valley’s Sarah Fenning (Council Rock South) finished ninth in the long jump (4.77m) at the 2010 Paul Kaiser Track and Field Classic. She also finished seventh in the triple jump (10.87m).
