BASEBALL

Tony Donofry (Council Rock North) was 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored in Bloomsburg’s 14-1 win over IUP on Sunday in the second game of a doubleheader. In game one, Donofry contributed a double, but IUP notched a 5-0 win.
On Saturday, Donofry was 3-for-6 with a double three runs scored and an RBI in Bloomsburg’s 20-0 win over IUP. Anthony Forman (Council Rock South) was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
West Chester swept a pair from Bloomsburg last Sunday. In game one, a 13-7 Golden Ram win, Charlie Kelly (Council Rock South) was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored. Donofry had three hits and two runs scored while Chris Haagen (Central Bucks West) and Forman (one RBI) each had a hit for the Huskies. Joe Opalka (Council Rock North) worked an inning in relief for West Chester. In game two, Blair Dameron (Pennridge) was 2-for-5 with three RBIs while Kelly was 2-for-4 with one run scored in the Golden Rams 11-7 win. Haagen (one RBI) and Donofry (two RBIs) each had a pair of hits. Keith Meyer (Council Rock South) and Forman both added one hit. Joe Crossin (Pennsbury) worked a scoreless inning for Bloomsburg.
Mark Angelo (Quakertown) received the Coaches Award for baseball at East Stroudsburg.
Angelo hit three home runs in East Stroudsburg’s split with Mansfield in a doubleheader on Saturday. The Warriors, who hit 11 home runs in the twinbill, won the first game 17-13 but lost the second 16-15. As a result of the split, Mansfield won the tiebreaker for the final PSAC playoff spot. Angelo put his name in the school record books for home runs in a season (12), doubles (21), extra base hits (34), and total bases (136). His 58 RBIs were one behind the school record. Angelo had 77 hits on the season, tying Brett Reynolds’ 2000 season for the most all-time. He hit .421 for the year, including a 9-for-12 performance with five home runs against Mansfield to wrap up one of the top offensive seasons in school history in his only year at ESU after using his first three years of eligibility at Bucknell.
On Friday, Angelo was 5-for-6, which included a pair of home runs, in East Stroudsburg’s twinbill against Mansfield. ESU won the first game 2-1 in eighth innings and lost the second 9-5.
Senior Jamie Abercrombie (Hatboro-Horsham) had a pair of hits in Temple’s 13-9 win over Xavier on Friday.
James Quigley (Bensalem) had one of Kutztown’s four hits in its 2-0 win over Millersville in game one of a doubleheader on Friday. Millersville won the second game 2-0.
Freshman Alex Latchum (Central Bucks South) drove in three runs in Chestnut Hill’s 13-9 win in 10 innings over Bloomfield College on Friday. One day earlier, Justin Wiercinski (Hatboro-Horsham) allowed two hits and a walk while striking out one in 2.2 innings of relief to earn his second save of the season in Chestnut Hills 5-3 win over the University of the Sciences on Thursday. Latchum contributed an RBI single. Last Sunday, Mike Knipe (Pennridge) had a pair of hits and two runs scored while Andrew Donofry (Hatboro-Horsham) drove in a pair of runs in Chestnut Hill’s 11-4 loss to Post University.
Freshman Andy Noga (Cheltenham) worked seven strong innings in East Stroudsburg’s 4-3 loss in 13 innings to Columbia Union last Sunday. Noga fanned seven and allowed just two earned runs.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Senior Chris Bach (Harry S. Truman) became the eighth East Stroudsburg University student-athlete to receive both the Senior Athlete of the Year and senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards at the annual Athletic Awards Banquet on Sunday. Bach, who also was named team MVP, was the first basketball player to be named an Academic All-American in school history on Feb. 25, the same day he scored his 1,000th career point. Bach had 1,016 points in his four-year college career that began at Philadelphia University in 1996-97 and resumed at ESU during the 2006-07 season.
A two-time All-PSAC East selection, he averaged 19.0 points and 9.1 rebounds as a senior, ranked in the top 50 in Division II in scoring, rebounding and blocks, and in the top 10 with 166 made free throws while shooting 80.2 percent from the foul line.
Bach graduated summa cum laude in December with a 3.82 grade-point average in Sports Management and is attending graduate school at ESU in Exercise Science. He delivered the keynote address along with senior Jennifer Bensinger, a member of the softball program.
Robby Pines (Souderton) received the coaches award for the 2008-09 season at East Stroudsburg.
FOOTBALL
Matt Freed (Souderton) was named MVP of East Stroudsburg’s football team at the annual awards banquet on Sunday.
Anthony Pekarski (Harry S. Truman) hauled in a five-yard touchdown pass in the White’s 10-0 shutout win over Red in Temple’s annual intra-squad scrimmage.
MEN’S GOLF
Senior Adam Pifer (Pennridge) completed his four-year career by shooting an 81-82-76=239 (+26) to tie for 34th in the Atlantic-10 Championships at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. Pifer, who shot a five-over 40 on the front, rebounded with an even-par 36 on the back to keep the Owls in fourth place. It was the Owls’ best showing since 2002.
MEN’S LACROSSE
Freshman Johnny Casey (Abington) scored five goals in Widener’s 20-6 win over King’s on Saturday. On Wednesday, Casey had a pair of goals in Widener’s 8-1 win over Eastern. Michael Ryan (Souderton) scored the only goal for Eastern.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Amber Hoch (Souderton) scored five goals in Lock Haven's 13-10 win over West Chester to claim the 2009 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championship. It marked the Lady Eagles' fourth conference crown in school history and first since 1981. It was the first loss for West Chester in the PSAC title game since 2003. Lock Haven finished runner-up to West Chester in the last three championship games.
Hoch contributed six goals and two assists in Lock Haven’s 21-11 win over Bloomsburg in the semifinals of the PSAC playoffs. She also was credited with four ground balls. Allison Berger (Springfield) added a pair of goals for Lock Haven while Kate Smyth (Pennsbury) led the defense with a team-high 10 grounds balls and three turnovers caused. She also had one goal. For Bloomsburg, which saw its season end, Sam Alexander (Upper Moreland) had one goal and two ground balls. Brieann Wolfe (Pennridge) had one goal, two ground balls and one turnover caused.
Senior Stephanie Jordan (Souderton) is among the top five goalies in the CACC for saves-per-game (14.8), save percentage (.517), goals-against-average (14.38) and ground balls per game (3.3). She received second team all-conference honors. Jordan had 12 saves in Chestnut Hill’s 20-15 win over Wilmington University on Wednesday.
Bloomsburg notched an 18-9 win over East Stroudsburg in its regular season finale on Wednesday. Alexander had a pair of goals and two ground balls as well as three turnovers caused. Wolfe had one goal, one assist, two ground balls and one turnover caused. For ESU, Michelle Mangiaruga (North Penn) had a pair of goals, two assists and five ground balls. Sara Foley (Neshaminy), Lindsey Moyer (Pennridge) and Jamie Wesztergom (Springfield) each scored a goal. Foley and Wesztergom each also had a pair of ground balls while Moyer had one ground ball. Mangiaruga closed the year with 47 goals, sixth in a single season in school history. She finished the year with 59 points on 47 goals and 12 assists.
Michelle Mangiaruga was named the ABC Trophy, Inc. Athlete of the Week at ESU for her performance for the lacrosse team for the week ending April 21. In two games, she had nine goals and an assist, including her second five-goal game of the season against third-ranked Mercyhurst. She had four goals in ESU’s 9-6 win over Shippensburg. The sophomore midfielder had 15 goals in seven games in an injury-shortened freshman season.
Gayle Kuntzmann (Hatboro-Horsham) had two goals and an assist for Shippensburg in its 9-4 win over Millersville on Wednesday. She also had four ground balls and one turnover caused. Karen Schnurr (Council Rock South) had three turnovers caused and one ground ball. Courtney Haggerty (Hatboro-Horsham) made 15 saves for the second straight game for the Marauders. Morgan Mangiargua (North Penn) had one ground ball and one turnover caused while teammate Laura DeLuca (North Penn) had one turnover caused.
Leeann Pica (Neshaminy) had two goals, three ground balls and one turnover caused in Kutztown’s 19-9 win over Edinboro. Danielle Shore (Souderton) and Justine Simonsen (Upper Moreland) each had one ground ball. Julie Rosenkaimer (North Penn) had one turnover caused.
Gabrielle Stitz (Hatboro-Horsham) connected for the hat trick while Chrissy Stokes (Plymouth Whitemarsh) added a pair of goals and two turnovers caused in West Chester’s 13-11 win over Stonehill. Kimberlee Hachen (North Penn) and Jill Morris (North Penn) both were credited with a ground ball.  Morris had two turnovers caused while Jackie Hoover (Cheltenham) had one turnover caused.
Tracy Zimmer (Council Rock North) had three draw controls in Temple’s 14-12 win over St. Bonaventure.
SOFTBALL
Senior Steph Denlinger (Souderton) singled and scored a run in the fourth inning of Kutztown's 2-1 win over Edinboro on Saturday in a PSAC playoff game. The win vaulted the Golden Bears into next weekend's championship round at Lock Haven University. Kutztown will face Bloomsburg at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The winner will take on top-seeded Lock Haven in the championship game. On Friday, Kutztown needed eight innings to down Edinboro 4-3. Denlinger was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Kaitlin Arbogast (Wissahickon) notched the win, allowing five hits while walking one and striking out 10. Arbogast is 19-5 on the season for the Golden Bears, who upped their record to 43-8-1 after Sunday's win.
Junior Rachel Greeby (Pennsbury) had a pair of hits, including a double, in The College of New Jersey’s 1-0 loss to #16 ranked Rowan on Sunday. TCNJ won the second game of the twinbill 5-3.
Freshman Rachel Gieringer (Hatboro-Horsham) hit her third home run of the season in the top of the first inning of East Stroudsburg’s PSAC tournament elimination game against Bloomsburg. The Huskies went on to win 2-1, bringing an end to ESU’s season. Earlier in the day, Bloomsburg notched a 1-0 win over ESU.
MEN’S TENNIS
Carson Richter (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had the lone win for Chestnut Hill in its 5-1 loss to USP in the CACC semifinals on Tuesday. Richter notched a 6-1, 6-0 win at third singles. Last Sunday, Richter earned his team’s only point with a 10-5 win at fourth singles in Chestnut Hill’s 8-1 loss to East Stroudsburg.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Katie Hasyn (North Penn) was leading in her match at number one singles in Bloomsburg’s PSAC semifinal match against Slippery Rock 6-1, 4-6, 4-2 when the match was called. Bloomsburg won the match 5-3. In the title match against California (Pa.), the Huskies came out on the short end of a 5-0 score.
Liz Heisler (Wissahickon) teamed with Kelly Eurich to earn an 8-2 decision at number two doubles in Gettysburg’s 6-3 loss to Ursinus last Saturday.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
At the Penn Relays, junior James Green (North Penn) finished tops among Division III athletes and 12th overall in the javelin with a throw of 58.02 meters.
Kutztown’s Jason Rebuck (William Tennent) captured first in the discus at  the All-American individual meet at East Stroudsburg last Saturday with a throw of 158-2 ¾.
Bloomsburg’s Adam Mowry (Hatboro-Horsham) finished fourth in the pole vault (13-7) at the Ed Fry Invitational last Saturday.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Junior Nikita Halteman (North Penn) won twice for Widener at the West Chester Lance Chance Qualifier on Friday. Halteman took the hammer throw at 39.89 meters and the discus throw at 41.93 meters.
Junior Anna Aagenes (Central Bucks West) was part of the University of Penn’s 4x1500m relay team that finished fifth in the Championship of America race with a time of 18:11.87, a school record that shaved more than two seconds off the previous Penn mark of 18:14.44 set in 2007.
Senior Katherine Doyle (Central Bucks West) led off East Stroudsburg’s 4x200m relay at the Penn Relays on Friday which turned in a time of 1:44.05, the fourth fastest time by a women’s 4x200m relay team at ESU.
Kutztown junior Cheryl Dingman (North Penn) finished first in the 1500m run with a time of 4:56.78 at the All-American individual meet at East Stroudsburg last Saturday.
