BASEBALL
Redshirt sophomore Andy Noga (Cheltenham) allowed just one earned run, but East Stroudsburg fell to Mansfield by a 2-1 score in the second game of a twinbill on Sunday. It was the first loss of the season for Noga, who fell to 4-1 despite throwing a five-hitter with five strikeouts and no walks in a complete game effort. Noga has 29 strikeouts and three walks in 35.1 innings over six starts this season. On Tuesday, freshman Keith Moyer (Souderton) earned the win on the mound in ESU’s 11-10 non-conference win over Philadelphia University. Moyer threw the final 2.2 innings without allowing a hit or run while striking out six. East Stroudsburg was ranked No. 11 in the most recent NCBWA Division II baseball poll. The Warriors were the top-ranked team in the last week’s NCBWA Atlantic Region poll.
Eric Kammler (Pennridge) delivered an RBI double in the eighth to give La Salle a 4-3 lead that propelled the Explorers to the 4-3 win over Rhode Island in game one of a twinbill on Saturday. Kevin Christy (North Penn) notched the win on the mound, collecting the final out in the eighth. In URI's 7-3 win in game two, Mike Bradstreet (North Penn) worked two scoreless innings in relief for URI. For the season, Bradstreet is 1-0 in 11 appearances with a 2.45 ERA. On Tuesday, Kevin Christy (North Penn) pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief with a walk and two strikeouts to earn the win in La Salle’s 6-4 win over Penn. Shane Petrellis (Council Rock South) got the start and worked 3.2 innings before giving way to the bullpen.
Sophomore Matt Hone (Council Rock North) singled and scored a run in Widener’s 10-6 win over Albright to cap a three-game sweep over its Commonwealth Conference foe.
Scott Runzer (Council Rock North) doubled and scored a run in Bloomsburg’s 7-5 loss to West Chester in game one of Monday’s twinbill. West Chester won the second game 3-2 to earn the sweep.
Pinch hitter Drew Stoll (Council Rock South) hit an RBI double with two outs in the ninth in St. Joseph’s 6-3 loss to George Washington on Sunday.
Nick Vitelli (Hatboro-Horsham) contributed a bases-clearing double in Penn State Berks’ 7-4 win over Keuka College in the nightcap of a twinbill on Saturday. He also had a basehit in Keuka’s 6-0 win in the opener. In Penn State Berks’ 8-3 loss to Haverford in a non-conference game on Wednesday, Vitelli contributed a sacrifice fly.
Dan Garcia (Cheltenham) delivered a two-out double to drive in a pair of runs in Eastern’s 5-4 win over Manhattanville College on Saturday.
Senior catcher Andrew Donofry (Hatboro-Horsham) contributed a solo home run in Chestnut Hill’s 4-3 loss to Caldwell College on Monday in game one of a twinbill. Chestnut Hill came back to win game two 7-4. Mike Knipe (Pennridge) contributed a single and two RBIs in the win. Knipe also had a hit and RBI in game one. Alex Latchum (Central Bucks South) also had a hit in the 4-3 loss.
Sophomore Michael Corrigan (William Tennent) had three hits and one RBI in Penn State Abington’s 10-3 win over Valley Forge Christian College. He also scored two runs. Teammate Will Erskine (North Penn) added an RBI and scored a run. On Tuesday, Erskine contributed a pair of hits and scored a run in Penn State Abington’s 9-4 loss to Rutgers-Camden. On Monday, Corrigan contributed three hits and three RBIs in Penn State Abington’s 10-4 win over Lancaster Bible College. Erskine contributed a single and two runs scored while senior Kevin Szafranski (Bensalem) added an RBI single. In Penn State Abington’s 5-3 win in game two, Szafranski contributed a hit and an RBI. Corrigan also had a basehit while Erskine contributed an RBI double. Robert Morak (Abington) notched the save on the mound, allowing three hits and no runs while striking out one in three innings of relief.
Senior Jay Sechowicz (Council Rock South) collected a pair of hits and an RBI in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 3-3 tie on Wednesday afternoon. The game was called after 10 innings due to darkness. It was Sechowicz’s RBI single in the eighth that put the Griffins on top 2-1 before Rowan tied the score in the top of the ninth.
Gwynedd-Mercy senior Mike Albert (Pennsbury) was named to the Colonial States Athletic Conference Hitting Honor Roll after his 4-for-4 effort, which included a double and two RBIs, in the Griffins’ 9-8 win at Immaculata in the second game of a doubleheader. The senior went 1-for-3 with an RBI in game one’s victory and ended the week with a .714 batting average, going 5-for-7 over the weekend.
Chris Edgar (North Penn) contributed two hits, one RBI and scored two runs in No. 20 Millersville’s 12-2 win over Kutztown in game one of a twinbill on Sunday. In Kutztown’s 12-5 win over the Marauders in game two, James Quigley (Bensalem) and Matt Albaugh (North Penn) each contributed a pair of hits and scored a run for the Golden Bears. Albaugh had three RBIs to lead Kutztown. On Saturday, Edgar had a hit and scored a run in Millersville’s 6-1 win over Kutztown in game one of a twinbill. Quigley had one hit for the Golden Bears. In Millersville’s 11-5 win in game two of the doubleheader, Edgar had a hit and run scored. Quigley led the Golden Bears with two hits, one RBI and one run scored. Millersville was ranked second in last week’s NCBWA Atlantic Region poll.
MEN’S GOLF
La Salle freshman golfer Michael Johnson (Hatboro-Horsham) has been named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week for the second time in the past three weeks it was announced on March 28. Johnson was the medalist with a 1-over par 71 to claim the Swarthmore Invitational . The freshman from Hatboro-Horsham became the first Explorer to win a tournament since Sept. 26, 2006. The rookie is averaging a team-best 75.9 strokes per round this season, with a season-best round of 70. The La Salle golf team also carded its best team score since Sept. 17, 2006, with a 300 (+12) to win the Swarthmore Invitational by 13 strokes.
Freshman Russell Hartung (Central Bucks East) had his best collegiate round, carding an even-par 71 to lead Temple to a fourth place showing at the Wildcat Invitational on Monday. Hartung, who shot a 77 in the opening round Sunday, led the Owls and tied for 11th in the field of 105 golfers at the invitational, which was hosted by Villanova at the White Manor Country Club.
WOMEN'S ICE HOCKEY
University of Maryland sophomore Emily Summers (Central Bucks West) was named to the 2011 American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Women's Division 2 All-American Second Team on defense. In her freshman year, Summers was the fifth leading scorer in the ACHA with 20 goals and nine assists while playing defense. In high school, Summers, who was named captain of her Maryland squad, played goalie for the CB West varsity field hockey team and also played defense for the girls' high school team that included girls from CB West and CB East.
MEN’S LACROSSE
Junior midfielder Andrew Kirlin (Central Bucks East) scored a goal in Ursinus College’s 6-5 win over Whittier on Tuesday.
Freshman attackman Garrett Rosiek (Wissahickon) scored a goal in Aurora University’s 10-8 win over Trine University on Thursday.
Johnny Casey (Abington) scored two goals in Widener’s 24-5 win over Misericordia on Sunday. Teammate Craig Hunsberger (Pennridge) won 18-of-28 face-offs for Widener. On Wednesday, Casey contributed three goals in Widener’s 12-5 win over FDU Florham.
Kevin Sonderschafer (Central Bucks South) contributed a goal and an assist in Chestnut Hill’s 13-6 win over Wheeling Jesuit on Sunday.
Heath Kupecky (Upper Merion) contributed one goal, two assists and two groundballs in Messiah College's 11-9 win over FDU-Florham on Saturday. For the season, the Upper Merion alum has 12 goals and 12 assists. In Wednesday's 17-3 win over Alvernia, Kupecky had one goal, two assists and four groundballs.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Senior Karen Schnurr (Central Bucks South) recorded the hat trick in Shippensburg’s 18-0 non-conference win over West Virginia Wesleyan on Thursday. Junior Ali Cross (Upper Dublin) won three draw controls and picked up four groundballs. On Tuesday, Schnurr scored five goals and led the team with four draw controls in Shippensburg’s 16-10 win over Kutztown. Sophomore Roxanne Brown (Pennridge) added a single goal. Jen Dunne (Neshaminy) scored a single goal for the Golden Bears.
Senior Kelsey Schmoltze (Upper Moreland) scored two goals and handed out a game-high and season-high three assists in Millersville’s come-from-behind 11-10 win over Kutztown on Saturday. Morgan Mangiaruga (North Penn) scored an unassisted goal. Leann Pica (Neshaminy) scored two goals for Kutztown. Millersville goalkeeper Courtney Haggerty (Hatboro-Horsham) turned away 11 shots.
Senior Michelle Mangiaruga (North Penn) scored four goals in East Stroudsburg’s 17-8 loss to No. 8 Mercyhurst on Saturday. On Tuesday, sophomore Ali Green (North Penn) had three goals and an assist in East Stroudsburg’s 15-14 upset at No. 10 Gannon in PSAC lacrosse.
Freshman Aubrey Bossert (Wissahickon) contributed a goal in Bloomsburg’s 11-9 win over eighth-ranked Mercyhurst on Tuesday.
Senior attack Lindsey Urban (Central Bucks East) scored three goals in Ursinus College’s 15-3 win over Bryn Mawr on Saturday. Sophomore Jackie Kimmel (Hatboro-Horsham) had two saves in one half of action in goal. With the win Ursinus improved to 4-0 in Centennial League play. In Wednesday’s 12-5 win over Washington, sophomore midfielder Eliabeth Chatburn (Upper Dublin) had three caused turnovers.
Bernadette Maher (Council Rock North) scored two goals in American University’s 11-6 loss to Lehigh on Saturday. She also had a pair of goals in American’s 11-8 win over Columbia on Wednesday. Teammate Emily Maher (Pennridge) tallied three caused turnovers and three groundballs.
Freshman attack Kellie Manoppello (Upper Merion) contributed four goals and one assist in Cabrini’s 21-12 win over the College of Notre Dame on Saturday.
Freshman Danielle Savoni (Hatboro-Horsham) contributed a goal in Penn State Abington’s 14-2 loss to Wesley College on Monday.
Gwynedd-Mercy senior Colleen Dellostretto (Upper Moreland) was named the Colonial States Athletic Conference women’s lacrosse player of the week for the week ending March 27. She scored seven points on five goals and two assists on the week, which included netting her 200th career goal in the Griffins 21-9 win over Neumann. She connected for the hat trick in the win. Earlier in the week, she put up two goals and two assists in the 11-7 win at Notre Dame. On the season, she is tied for the team lead with 18 goals.
Rachel Dirksen (Abington) scored four goals and contributed an assist in No. 16 Messiah College’s 18-8 win over FDU-Florham on Saturday. Teammate Rachel Coyle (Souderton) had three draw controls and one groundball. In Wednesday’s 19-10 win over Alvernia, Dirksen scored a pair of goals while Coyle was credited with five draw controls and two groundballs.
Freshman Lindsay Walbrandt (Souderton) contributed the hat trick in No. 2 Lock Haven’s 17-3 win over Edinboro on Saturday. On Friday, Kate Smyth (Pennsbury) scored a pair of second half goals in Lock Haven’s 12-7 win over No. 9 Rolllins. Walbrandt contributed a goal and an assist as well as three groundballs and four draw controls. In Tuesday’s 21-6 win over Slippery Rock, Smyth had two goals and two groundballs while Walbrandt added a goal, three groundballs and one draw control.
Kelly McKay (Pennridge) contributed a goal and groundball in Chestnut Hill’s 14-11 loss to Philadelphia University on Wednesday.
SOFTBALL
Rachel Gieringer (Hatboro-Horsham) was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs in East Stroudsburg’s 7-5 win over Millersville on Sunday. Her home run in the eighth inning helped break a 5-5 tie. It was her 11th career home run and fourth of the season. ESU won the second game 5-3 to earn the sweep.
Alicia Hughes (Quakertown) delivered a double in just her second career at-bat in Millersville’s 5-4 loss to No. 16 Bloomsburg in the second game of twinbill on Saturday. The Huskies won game one 5-0 to earn the sweep. On Wednesday, Deanna Schneiderriet (William Tennent) contributed an RBI single in Millersville’s 3-1 win over West Chester. West Chester won the second game of the twinbill 5-2.
Moira Johnsen (Council Rock North) hit a two-out, three-run homer as part of a four-run third inning in Shippensburg’s 8-2 win over East Stroudsburg in the second game of a doubleheader sweep on Saturday. For ESU, Gieringer delivered an RBI single and scored a run. Shippensburg was voted No. 24 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Poll released on March 30. It is the first time the Raiders have been nationally ranked since April 25, 2007.
Dee Eppinger (North Penn) was a perfect 3-for-3, which included a two-run home run in the fifth inning, in No. 9 IUP’s 5-0 win over Lock Haven in the first game of a twinbill on Sunday. It was Eppinger’s third home run of the season. Teammate Mary Ward (North Penn) added a hit and run scored. On the mound, senior Erin Holloway (Souderton) was close to perfect, allowing just one hit while fanning six and walking two. In the second game of the DH, IUP saw its school record 14-game winning streak come to an end when it fell to Lock Haven 2-1. On Tuesday, Eppinger contributed a pair of doubles and one RBI in IUP’s 13-4 win over Clarion. Holloway notched the win on the mound, allowing four hits and three earned runs while striking out eight and walking one. In IUP’s 4-2 win in the twinbill sweep, Eppinger delivered the game’s big blow – a three-run home run in the second inning to give IUP a 3-0 lead. IUP is ranked ninth in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll. It is the highest ranking in school history.
Holloway earned PSAC Central Pitcher of the Week honors while helping IUP go 4-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play for the week ending March 28. It was the second time Holloway has received that honor this season. In 14.2 innings of work, Holloway had an ERA of 0.95, allowing just two runs on six hits, striking out 23 and walking four. In IUP’s conference opener, Holloway pitched seven shutout innings, striking out 12 to lead IUP to a 3-0 win over Mansfield. She followed that by throwing six innings and allowing just two runs on three hits while recording nine strikeouts and just two walks in a win over Mercyhurst. She also picked up her first save of the season in game two against Mercyhurst, pitching 1.2 innings and allowing one hit, one walk and striking out two.
Courtney Zingle (Hatboro-Horsham) hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning to propel Mount St. Mary’s past Quinnipiac 11-6 in Northeast Conference softball action on Saturday. Zingle’s second home run of the year erased a 5-3 deficit and gave the Mount the lead for good. Quinnipiac won the second game 6-2. For the day, Zingle posted three hits, four RBIs and a run scored. Beth Everist (North Penn) also homered in the first game. Everist’s solo blast also came in the fourth inning of game one and put the Mount on top 7-5. Everist moved into second place in program history with 15 career homers. In last Sunday’s 16-10 loss to Cornell, Everist was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with four RBIs. Zingle also had three hits and a run scored.
Jamie Schwartz (Souderton) contributed three hits and two RBIs in Eastern University’s sweep of Philadelphia Biblical on Wednesday. Schwartz contributed one hit in Eastern’s 4-1 win in game one. In Eastern’s 10-0 win in game two, Schwartz had a double and two RBIs and also scored a run.
Freshman Stephanie Farrar (North Penn) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 8-7 loss to Keystone on Saturday. Teammate Nicole Paleologus (Bensalem) contributed a single and RBI. On Tuesday, sophomore Tegan Wendell (Abington) contributed a pair of hits and scored two runs and teammate Renee Stiteler (Plymouth Whitemarsh) added two hits and an RBI in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 4-1 win over Bible Baptist. Paleologus singled and scored a run.
Ashley McCarthy (Norristown) was a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI in Arcadia’s 5-3 loss to Elizabethtown in game two of a twinbill on Saturday. Arcadia won the first game 3-1.
MEN’S TENNIS
Lee Wexler (Plymouth Whitemarsh) and Tyler Pultro (Central Bucks West) earned an 8-1 win at number three doubles in Bloomsburg’s 6-3 win over Dowling on Sunday. Wexler also notched a 6-3, 6-3 win at number four singles. On Saturday, the team of Wexler and Pultro picked up an 8-0 win at number three doubles in Bloomsburg’s 9-0 win over West Chester. Wexler also earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at number four singles.
Daniel Lee (Abington) earned a 6-3, 6-1 win at sixth singles in The College of New Jersey’s 6-4 loss to Haverford College on Sunday. Lee was named Male Lion of the Week for the week ending March 28. The junior standout helped the Lions enjoy a perfect 3-0 week, winning all three of his decisions in singles play. He won 6-2, 6-1 in a 9-0 win over Muhlenberg and then scored the deciding points in a 5-4 win over NYU by the scores of 6-7 (3-7), 6-0, 6-2. He finished off the week with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph against Hobart College. Overall this season, Lee is a perfect 5-0.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Claire Afrassiabian (Norristown) earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at fourth singles in West Chester’s 7-2 loss to Bloomsburg on Saturday.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Freshman Nick Scarpello (Central Bucks West) finished fourth in the 5,000 meters at the Pepsi Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla., on Friday. He broke the tape in 14:26.76 in his first go-around in the event. Bernard Bennett-Green (Cheltenham) was part of Penn State’s distance medley relay that finished sixth with a time of 9:59.70 at the Pepsi Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla., on Saturday.
Millersville’s Keith Ogden (Cheltenham) took second place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.76 seconds in the final day of the Osprey Open this weekend. The time was good enough to earn Ogden his third PSAC qualifying time in three different events – the 100-meter, 200-meter and 400-meter dashed.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Temple freshman Brianna Alvarez (Upper Merion) was part of the 1600m sprint relay that placed sixth at the Colonial Relays at William & Mary on Saturday with a time of 4:13.54. Victoria Gocht (Upper Dublin) was part of the 4x800m relay that also finished sixth with an ECAC qualifying time of 9:06.29. Gocht also was a member of the 4x400m relay that finished fifth with a time of 3:53.59.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Senior Justin Brubaker (Souderton) delivered 26 kills while collecting eight digs in Philadelphia Biblical’s come-from-behind 3-2 win over Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the NECVA quarterfinals on Saturday. PBU’s season came to an end when the team fell to Nazareth College 3-2 in Saturday night’s semifinals. Brubaker had 19 kills in the loss while teammate Ethan Mawhinney (Neshaminy) added 10 kills.
