BASEBALL
Freshman reliever Mike Bradstreet (North Penn) earned the win in Rhode Island’s 6-5 victory over Fordham on Thursday. The rookie hurler scattered four hits with three strikeouts and no walks in four innings of work.
LaSalle sophomore righthander Kevin Christy (North Penn) was named the Big 5 pitcher of the week last week. Christy earned a pair of wins, allowing just one earned run in 12 innings of work. He started and pitched three scoreless innings against Maryland Eastern Shore on Wednesday before throwing a complete-game against Dayton, allowing one earned run and striking out five. Christy was also named the Atlantic 10 Conference's Pitcher of the Week, and he was also named the LaSalle Student-Athlete of the Week. Christy was 2-0 and posted a 0.75 earned run average with 10 strikeouts in two starts and 12 innings pitched. Christy is just the fifth Explorer to be named A-10 Pitcher of the Week and the first since teammate Kevin Fuqua earned the honor on March 10, 2008. For the season, Christy is 2-3 in five starts and leads the Explorers staff with 31 strikeouts, which is sixth in the conference, and 32.1 innings pitched.
Jon Gyles (Central Bucks West) contributed a hit and an RBI in LaSalle’s 8-6 loss to Duquesne on Friday. In Thursday’s 11-6 win over Duquesne, Eric Kammler (Pennridge) collected a single in LaSalle’s eight-run uprising in the second inning.
Joe Crossin (Pennsbury) allowed one run on seven hits in 6.1 innings of work in Bloomsburg’s 3-1 win over East Stroudsburg on Saturday. In the Huskies’ 15-8 win in the second game of the doubleheader, Tony Donofry (Council Rock North) and Eric Ebert (Council Rock South) both contributed RBI singles. Ebert scored three runs. On Friday, Ebert hit a grand slam in the second inning of Bloomsburg’s 9-2 win over East Stroudsburg. He also had a single in the Huskies’ 5-3 loss to ESU.
Sophomore leftfielder Alex Latchum (Central Bucks South) contributed a single in a three-run first inning in Chestnut Hill’s 6-1 win over Concordia College on Saturday. Latchum finished the game with two hits and one RBI. Teammate Mike Knipe (Pennridge) contributed an RBI. On Wednesday, Joe Crane (Council Rock South) delivered a one-out, pinch-hit single in Chestnut Hill’s two-run eighth inning in the Griffins’ 5-2 loss to Alvernia. Latchum led the Griffins with two hits.
Robbie Zinsmeister (North Penn) contributed an RBI infield single in IUP’s 6-3 loss to Slippery Rock in the nightcap of a twinbill on Saturday. IUP won game one 6-1.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Chris McDevitt (Central Bucks West) was one of four Widener student-athletes selected to attend the Career in Sports Forum in Indianapolis, Ind. McDevitt is a three-time letterwinner at guard. He played in all 25 games this past season with 14 starts. He led the team in 3-point field goals with 32, finished second in assists with 56 and tied for fourth with 189 points.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
LaSalle freshman Lauren McDermott (North Penn) was named Atlantic-10 Rookie of the Week for the second consecutive week. In a pair of conference games, she contributed eight goals, one assist, a ground ball and five controlled draws. Against St. Bonaventure, McDermott scored a career-high five goals, including the game winner. The eight goals she scored through her first two A-10 games are the most she’s scored in any two-game span this season.
Kate Smyth (Pennsbury) contributed two goals and an assist in second-ranked Lock Haven’s 13-9 win over No. 5 Mercyhurst in a battle of unbeaten PSAC schools on Saturday. Allison Berger (Springfield) scored three goals in Lock Haven’s 23-3 win over Slippery Rock on Tuesday.
St. Joseph's sophomore Julie Mineweaser (North Penn) scored the first goal in LaSalle’s 9-8 overtime win over St. Joe’s on Thursday. Freshman Lauren McDermott (North Penn) added a pair of early goals.
Senior Gayle Kuntzmann (Hatboro-Horsham) scored five of her career-high six goals in the second half of Shippensburg’s 13-11 win over Bloomsburg on Wednesday. Junior Karen Schnurr (Central Bucks South) also scored a goal. Sophomore Ali Cross (Upper Dublin), playing in just her third game in the field, was once again crucial to Shippensburg’s 15-11 advantage in draw controls. On Monday, Schnurr contributed the hat trick in Shippensburg’s 22-2 win over Shepherd. Cross – in her second straight start on attack – picked up two ground balls, won two draw controls and caused two turnovers in addition to scoring her first collegiate goal. Freshman Roxanne Brown (Pennridge) scored her first career goal. Kuntzmann caused three turnovers and picked up four ground balls in limited action.
Sara Foley (Neshaminy) connected for her first career hat trick in East Stroudsburg’s 17-12 win over Shippensburg on Saturday. Senior Lindsey Moyer (Pennridge) added a pair of goals. Junior Jamie Wesztergom (Springfield) had five draw controls for the Warriors, who were playing without their second-leading scorer – Michelle Mangiaruga (North Penn). For Shippensburg, Kuntzmann scored four goals for the fourth time this season to complement a season-high eight ground balls and five caused turnovers. Schnurr also added a goal for the Red Raiders.
Gabrielle Stutz (Hatboro-Horsham) scored four goals in West Chester’s 14-3 win over Millersville on Saturday. In the Golden Rams’ 25-7 romp over East Stroudsburg on Wednesday, Jackie Hoover (Cheltenham) scored four goals while Stutz scored two goals and two assists. Michelle Mangiaruga (North Penn) and Jamie Wesztergom (Springfield) both scored goals for ESU. Mangiaruga, Sara Foley (Neshaminy) and Ali Green (North Penn) all had assists.
Sophomore Shannon Carabba (Springfield) contributed four goals in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 20-6 romp over the College of Notre Dame on Tuesday night. The Griffins are 3-0 in CSAC play (4-4 overall).
Kelly McKay (Pennridge) contributed one goal and one assist in Chestnut Hill’s 12-10 win over Post University on Tuesday.
Stephanie Bianco (Upper Merion) contributed four goals and nine draw controls in IUP’s 20-12 win over Edinboro on Saturday.
SOFTBALL
Senior Nicole Koren (William Tennent) hit two home runs, including what proved to be the game winner, in Virginia’s 5-4 win over No. 22 North Carolina on Friday. The Cavaliers improved to 20-13, 6-0 ACC.
Pitcher Erin Holloway (Souderton) notched wins in both games of IUP’s sweep of Millersville on Saturday. In the Crimson Hawks’ 8-1 win in game one, Holloway allowed just four hits while striking out eight. She faced 24 batters and issued only one walk. Dee Eppinger (North Penn) had a hit and RBI while Jamie Palmerio (Norristown) and Brittany Allman (North Penn) each added a hit. In game two – a 3-2 win in 12 innings, Holloway picked up the win after seven and two-thirds innings of work that saw her allow just one run on three hits with seven strikeouts. She remains perfect on the season with a 16-0 record. Eppinger contributed a hit and RBI in the win. In last Sunday’s 15-2 win over Mansfield, Holloway fanned 11 and allowed just four hits. In game two of the twinbill – an 11-2 IUP win, Eppinger had a pair of hits.
Rachel Gieringer (Hatboro-Horsham) contributed a single in East Stroudsburg’s 1-0 loss in eight innings to ninth-ranked Bloomsburg on Saturday. In Friday’s 8-1 win over Millersville, freshman Tegan Wendell (Abington) had a two-run single in the sixth inning. Gieringer had a single in the win but saw her 10-game hitting streak snapped in game two, a 5-3 ESU loss. Wendell was 3-for-8 on the day with three RBIs to pace the Warriors.
Sam Schoell (North Penn) had a leadoff single in a three-run fifth inning in Temple's 8-0 win over St. Bonaventure on Thursday.
Kirstin Allen (Central Bucks West) contributed an RBI double in Maine's 5-2 loss to Hartford last Saturday.
Pam DelPizzo (Central Bucks South) delivered a pinch hit, RBI single in Elon’s 5-4 win over the College of Charleston.
Courtney Zingle (Hatboro-Horsham) was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs in Mount St. Mary's 12-1 win over Central Connecticut last Sunday. Zingle moved into 10th place on the school's all-time list with 58 RBIs. Beth Everist (North Penn) contributed a solo home run. It was Everist's seventh home run of the season, the eighth most in a single season at the Mount.
Senior Lisamarie Ramagli (Neshaminy) contributed two doubles and two RBIs in Shippensburg’s 9-6 win over Clarion on Saturday. Junior Moira Johnsen (Council Rock North) delivered an RBI single in Shippensburg’s 8-2 win in game two. For the day, Ramagli led the Red Raiders with a 3-for-7 effort at the plate that included four RBIs, three runs and two walks. In the opening game of a twinbill on Thursday, Johnson had a pair of hits in Shippensburg’s 8-2 loss to Kutztown. Ramagli contributed an RBI single.
MEN’S TENNIS
Lee Wexler (Plymouth Whitemarsh) earned a 6-2, 6-3 win at second singles in Bloomsburg’s 9-0 win over East Stroudsburg on Friday. He also was part of the winning doubles team that earned an 8-2 win. On Thursday, Wexler notched a 7-6 (7-0), 6-4 win at fourth singles in Bloomsburg’s 12-0 win over Wilkes College. He also was part of the second doubles team that earned an 8-4 win.
Junior Carson Richter (Plymouth Whitemarsh) was part of Chestnut Hill’s second doubles team that earned an 8-2 win in Chestnut Hill’s 7-2 loss to Philadelphia University on Wednesday.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Freshman Julie Goldsworthy (Central Bucks South) had an assist in Virginia Tech’s 2-0 win over Radford and contributed a goal and two assists in Tech’s 6-0 win over Liberty in spring soccer action. Goldsworthy has earned a starting position for 12th-ranked Tech.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Kaitie Hasyn (North Penn) earned a 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 win at first singles in Bloomsburg’s 7-2 win over East Stroudsburg on Friday. On Thursday, Hasyn was part of Bloomsburg’s victorious first doubles team in the Huskies’ 9-0 win over Cheyney. Hasyn and her partner rolled to an 8-0 win. In Wednesday’s 9-0 win over Wilkes, Hasyn earned a 6-1, 6-3 win at first singles and was part of the second doubles team that earned an 8-4 win.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
East Stroudsburg’s Kayla Littrell (William Tennent) finished 19th in the 200 meter dash with a time of 28.28 in Saturday’s Millersville Spring Opener. Monique Clemons (Wissahickon) was part of Shippensburg’s 4x400 meter relay that won first place in the Millersville Spring Invitational with a time of 49.58. She also finished fourth in the 100-meter dash (13.25) and fourth in the 200-meter dash (29.96). Krysten Goetter (Hatboro-Horsham) won the shot put with a throw of 12.37 meters. She finished third in the discus with a throw of 36.73 meters.
