BASEBALL
Millersville, ranked No. 1 in the most recent NCBWA Atlantic Region poll, clinched the PSAC East title on Friday with its doubleheader sweep of East Stroudsburg. In game two, ESU hurler Andy Noga (Cheltenham) threw six innings of four-hit baseball with three strikeouts and a walk, but the Warriors could not put any runs on the board and fell 2-0 to Millersville. Chris Edgar (North Penn) had one of Millersville’s four hits, a double. Millersville won the first game 1-0.
Eric Kammler (Pennridge) was 3-for-5 with one RBI and one run scored while teammate Jon Gyles (Central Bucks West) was 2-for-5 with two RBIs in La Salle’s 7-5 win over Richmond on Sunday. Shane Petrellis (Council Rock South) threw the first five innings to earn the win, allowing three runs on four hits while walking four and striking out five. Kevin Christy (North Penn) worked a scoreless inning in relief, fanning one. In Saturday’s 9-2 loss to Richmond, Kammler had a pair of hits while Gyles had one hit. Zach Huff (Pennridge) threw two innings, allowing two hits and one run while walking one and striking out one.
Jake Neiman (Quakertown) contributed a triple and scored a run in Ursinus College’s 12-11 loss to Albright on Wednesday. A.J. Wright (Council Rock South) threw one inning, allowing two hits and one run. Jake Kohler (Upper Dublin) absorbed the loss.
Drew Frankenfield (Wissahickon) contributed a double and scored two runs while teammate Ryan Brown (Souderton) also had a double, one RBI and a run scored in Messiah’s 8-6 win over McDaniel College on Wednesday. In Messiah’s 8-4 win over Alvernia on Monday, Brown delivered a home run and drove in three runs. Frankenfield had a pair of hits and scored a run. Frankenfield also had a hit in Messiah’s 15-3 loss to Alvernia in the opening game of the twinbill.
Alec Jacob (Pennsbury) earned the win on the mound in Lock Haven’s 9-8 win over Slippery Rock in eight innings on Tuesday. Jacob worked one and a third innings, striking out one batter.
Sophomore Tom Boyd (Council Rock South) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and four RBIs in Penn State Abington’s 16-0 win over Penn State Harrisburg on Monday in the first game of a twinbill. Freshman Will Erskine (North Penn) was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI. Sophomore Michael Corrigan (William Tennent) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. In Penn State Abington’s 7-5 win in game two, senior Kevin Szafranski (Bensalem) hit a two-run double in the fourth inning. Erskine – who was 3-for-3 with two RBIs - contributed an RBI single in the sixth. Picking up the win was freshman Brian Camp (Cheltenham) who pitched in the fifth inning.
Penn State Abington freshman Will Erskine (North Penn) was selected to the North Eastern Athletic Conference second team for his play at second base. Erskine started in 28 of the 33 games he played. He batted .307, scored 24 runs, collected 27 hits and contributed 14 RBIs. In the field, he had a team high 54 assists to go along with 28 putouts. Erskine also leads his team in fielding double plays with nine.
Gwynedd-Mercy junior John Barrington (Harry S. Truman) was chosen the CSAC Pitcher of the Week for the week ending on April 25. Barrington limited Centenary to just one run on two hits in five innings of work. The junior hurler collected two strikeouts in a 15-1 win in game two of Gwynedd’s doubleheader. For the season, Barrington is 2-2 in five starts with 24 strikeouts and 16 walks.
Senior Colin Tosti (Neshaminy) drove in a pair of runs in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 6-0 win over Marywood on Saturday. In Gwynedd’s 5-1 loss to Marywood in game two of Saturday’s twinbill, John Burns (Neshaminy) was 2-for-2 with a run scored while teammate Derek Apsche (Bensalem) also contributed a hit. On Monday, Tosti and Burns both delivered home runs in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 18-4 win over Centenary. Teammate Jay Sechowicz (Council Rock South) had two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Junior centerfielder Eric Blood (Pennridge) delivered a walk-off-single to give Chestnut Hill a 5-4 win in 16 innings over Post University on Saturday. Senior Mike Knipe (Pennridge) got things started in the inning with a lead-off single. Ray Puskar (Pennridge) also contributed a hit in the win. Chestnut Hill went on to win the nightcap 7-1. On Thursday, Knipe contributed three hits and two RBIs in Chestnut Hill’s 6-5 come-from-behind win over the University of the Sciences. Knipe got the Griffins rolling with an RBI triple in the first. He knocked in the second run with an RBI single in the third inning and then scored the game’s third run. Joe Mullin (Central Bucks South) delivered an RBI double. In the fifth inning, Alex Latchum (Central Bucks South), who had a pair of hits,led off with a double and scored on Puskar’s RBI single. In Tuesday’s doubleheader sweep of Nyack College, Latchum was 4-for-6 with a double, triple, three RBIs and three runs scored in the Griffins’ 12-9 win in game one. Knipe was 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Puskar had a pair of hits and two RBIs while Blood also had two hits and scored a run. Andrew Donofry (Hatboro-Horsham) and Mullin each added a hit. In Chestnut Hill’s 4-3 win in game two, Knipe had two hits and two RBIs while Latchum and Puskar both contributed a hit.
Keith Mayer (Council Rock South) contributed a hit and drove in a run in Bloomsburg’s 4-0 win over Kutztown in the first game of a twinbill on Saturday. Matt Albaugh (North Penn) had one of three Kutztown hits. Bloomsburg won the nightcap 5-0. On Friday, Albaugh had a pair of hits in Kutztown’s 8-5 win over Bloomsburg. Mayer had a hit for the Huskies. In Bloomsburg’s 11-9 win over Kutztown in game two of the doubleheader, Mayer had a pair of hits and an RBI.
Julian Faria (Pennsbury) was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored in Alvernia’s 13-3 win over Albright on Saturday. On Wednesday, Faria had a pair of hits and scored a run in #11/13 Alvernia’s 13-9 win over Stevenson University.
Nick Vitelli (Hatboro-Horsham) was 4-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored in Penn State Berks’ 8-2 win over Gallaudet on Saturday.
FIELD HOCKEY
Senior Brittany Kocis (Central Bucks East) received the Coaches Award for field hockey at East Stroudsburg’s annual Athletic Awards Banquet held on Sunday afternoon.
FOOTBALL
University of Maryland standout Da’Rel Scott (Plymouth Whitemarsh) was drafted in the seventh round of the 2011 NFL draft by the New York Giants. One of just four players in Maryland history to post 2,000 career rushing yards and 500 receiving yards, he is fourth on the Maryland career 100-yard rushing game list (eight) and is second in school history in yards per carry (5.58). Scott posted the fastest 40-yard time (4.34) at the NFL combine for any running back measured. In 2005, Scott had a remarkable senior season at PW, rushing 232 times for 2,523 yards (10.9 yards per carry) and 38 touchdowns. He also won the state title in the 100 meters as a junior with a time of 10.56.
Redshirt senior Matt Freed (Souderton) was named East Stroudsburg’s Male Senior Athlete of the Year and Male Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Freed, the first football player to be recognized as an All-American three times by the same organization and the second two-time first team Academic All-America selection in school history, is the Warriors’ fourth men’s athlete to claim both awards. As a senior, Freed was the only defensive player among the 24 finalists for the Harlon Hill Award, repeated as the Daktronics Super Region One Defensive Player of the Year and earned All-America status for the third straight season on the AP Little All-America team and Daktronics Division II team. He ranks third in school history with 399 career tackles and fifth with 22.5 sacks, including 120 tackles, 14.0 tackles for a loss and 7.5 sacks as a senior and received his third straight team MVP award. Academically, he compiled a GPA above 3.7 as a History and Secondary Education major and was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American first team and the PSAC Fall Top 10 for the second straight year. He also was a semifinalist for the Campbell Trophy from the National Football Foundation.
MEN’S GOLF
La Salle freshman golfer Michael Johnson (Hatboro-Horsham) was named the Atlantic 10 Co-Rookie of the Week for the fourth time this season, it was announced on Wednesday. Johnson tied for sixth place in the field of 62 golfers at the Saint Peter’s Peacock Invitational with a 76 (+4) and was just three strokes off the lead. It is the fourth time in five events that the freshman has been the top Explorer golfer. The rookie is averaging a team-best 76.7 strokes per round this season with a season-best round of 70. In this weekend’s Atlantic 10 Championship at Howey-In-The-Hills, FL, Johnson was the top La Salle golfer, finishing in a tie for 19th with a 230 (+14) for the three-day event.
Temple freshman Connor McNicholas (Hatboro-Horsham) was named to the 10-man Atlantic 10 All-Conference squad while also earning A-10 Most Outstanding Rookie Performer honors. McNicholas tied for seventh (73-74-76, 223) to lead Temple to a fourth place finish at the 2011 Atlantic 10 Conference Golf Championships held at the Mission Inn Resort on Sunday. McNicholas joined Jim Sullivan (1995) as the only two Temple golfers to win top rookie honors in the A-10.
Widener senior John Ksionska (Pennsbury) closed out the first round of the MAC Championships tied for 15th place on Saturday. He shot an 86 and was just two strokes out of the top 10.
Cabrini freshman Rob Bass (Plymouth Whitemarsh) tied for third in this weekend’s Colonial States Athletic Conference championship, shooting a 5-over 77 on Saturday. Cabrini captured the CSAC title by 21 strokes and earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Championship.
MEN’S LACROSSE
On Tuesday, sophomore Johnny Casey (Abington) scored a pair of goals in Widener’s 12-6 win over DeSales. The win was Widener’s 10th straight and clinched the top seed in the Middle Atlantic Conference Tournament. The regular season MAC crown is the Pride’s first since 2006, and the team’s 12 victories is one shy of the team-best.
Penn State Abington freshman Ryan Andress (Central Bucks East) was selected to the North Eastern Athletic Conference second team. Andress started in 11 of the 15 games he played. He had 23 shots, 49 groundballs and caused 16 turnovers. Sophomore Ryan Mawhinney (Neshaminy) was selected to the third team all-conference as a long stick midfielder. Mawhinney started in 13 of the 15 games he played. He had three goals, two assists and 22 shots. He led the team in groundballs with 107 and caused a team-high 28 turnovers. Freshman Kyle Andress (Central Bucks East) also was selected to the third team as a midfielder. Andress started in 12 of the 15 games he played where he had seven goals, two assists and 41 shots. He also had 50 groundballs and caused 14 turnovers.
Joe Hughes (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored a goal in Cabrini’s 17-5 win over Immaculata on Saturday. The win completed the 11th consecutive perfect regular season against conference opponents. On Wednesday, Hughes had a pair of assists in Cabrini’s 12-4 win over Marywood University.
Matt Mandia (Souderton) contributed a goal and two groundballs in Eastern University’s 20-1 win over Alvernia on Tuesday.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Freshman Amy Cross (Upper Dublin) scored a career-high four goals in #18 Syracuse’s 13-9 win over Cornell on Tuesday. In Syracuse’s 10-9 upset of #7 Loyola (Md.) on Friday, Cross contributed an assist. On Sunday, Cross contributed a goal in Syracuse’s 20-6 win over Villanova. The win clinched a share of the 2011 Big East regular season crown for the Orange.
Alex Taratuski (Hatboro-Horsham) contributed a goal in Widener’s 12-11 win over Alvernia on Saturday.
Kate Smyth (Pennsbury) had a pair of assists in #4 Lock Haven’s 10-9 win over West Chester in a in the PSAC title game on Saturday. Jackie Hoover (Cheltenham) had a goal and two groundballs for West Chester. The win marked the third straight for Lock Haven over West Chester in the title game. Saturday’s championship marked the sixth in Lock Haven history. In semifinal action on Saturday, Lock Haven defeated East Stroudsburg 15-7. Freshman Lindsay Walbrandt (Souderton) had three groundballs and two draw controls. Smyth had one goal. For the Warriors, Michelle Mangiaruga (North Penn) had two goals, and Ali Green (North Penn) had one assist. Mangiaruga – who had 46 goals and 27 assists this season - closed out the season with 73 points, tied for third in school history.
In Tuesday’s quarterfinal game, Mangiaruga contributed three goals and one assist in East Stroudsburg’s 16-8 win over No. 10 Gannon. It was the Warriors’ first PSAC lacrosse postseason win in 25 years.
Julie Mineweaser (North Penn) started all 16 games for St. Joseph's University this season. She contributed three goals, one assist, 25 groundballs, seven draw controls and 15 caused turnovers. Freshman Brittany Hanrahan (North Penn) saw action in 14 games and started eight. She had eight draw controls. The Hawks finished the season 5-11.
Rachel Dirksen (Abington) contributed a goal and an assist in #13 Messiah’s 20-4 win over King’s College on Saturday. She also was credited with two groundballs and two draw controls. Teammate Rachel Coyle (Souderton) had six groundballs and three draw controls. In Messiah’s 20-1 win over Lycoming, Dirksen had three goals and one assist while Coyle had one assist, three groundballs and four draw controls.
Senior attack Lindsey Urban (Central Bucks East) was named to the 2011 All-Centennial team, receiving honorable mention. Urban, a second team pick last year, was third on the team in points with 28 and second on the team in goals scored with 26. She racked up 19 groundballs, 18 draw controls and eight caused turnovers.
Bernadette Maher (Council Rock North) was named to the inaugural Academic All-Patriot League Team. The Academic All-Patriot League Team is limited to only 12 recipients. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or student-athletes in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honors. American’s top goal scorer this year, Maher boasts a 3.534 cumulative GPA as a public communications major in the School of Communications and is minoring in psychology. She scored a career-high 32 goals this season and also posted a career-best 35 points, .873 shot on goal percentage, nine draw controls and nine caused turnovers. The junior has also been named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll each of the last two seasons. In American’s 15-14 loss to Colgate on Thursday, Maher scored a team-high three goals and also was credited with four groundballs. Teammate Emily Maher (Pennridge) contributed a goal and two groundballs.

Lauren McDermott (North Penn), Sara Ciavarelli (North Penn) and Kaitlin Colbridge (North Penn) started 16 out of 16 games for La Salle this season. Ciavarelli had a team-high 36 groundballs to go along with 20 draw controls and eight caused turnovers. McDermott was second on the team in goals scored with 23. She also had eight assists (31 points) as well as 21 groundballs and 14 draw controls. Allison Herman (North Penn) saw action in 14 games and started nine. She contributed two goals, seven groundballs, nine draw controls and eight caused turnovers. Freshman Danielle Horn (North Penn) started four games and saw action in 12. She contributed three goals, one assist, three groundballs and three draw controls.
Sophomore midfielder Elizabeth Chatburn (Upper Dublin) scored three goals and Urban added a pair in Ursinus College’s 14-7 loss to Gettysburg in the Centennial Conference semifinals on Saturday. In goal, sophomore Jackie Kimmel (Hatboro-Horsham) had seven saves in 50 minutes.
Kendall Rood (Central Bucks East) contributed two goals, one assist, four groundballs and two draw controls in Eastern College’s 17-6 win over Arcadia on Saturday.
Colleen Dellostretto (Upper Moreland) scored two goals and had two caused turnovers in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 17-1 win over Cedar Crest on Monday. Teammates Kirsten Walther (Souderton) and Jenna D’Arcy (Hatboro-Horsham) each contributed a goal and draw control. Erin Gorenflo (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had two groundballs and one draw control, and Amy Powell (Plymouth Whitemarsh) also had two groundballs.
Dyana Henry (Neshaminy) scored a goal and also was credited with four groundballs in Penn State Abington’s 17-2 loss to Lancaster Bible on Wednesday.
Cabrini freshman midfielder Kellie Manoppello (Upper Merion) was named to the All-Colonial States Athletic Conference honorable mention team. Manoppello ranked fourth on the team with 21 points on 12 goals and eight assists. In Saturday’s 18-10 win over Immaculata in a quarterfinal game of the Colonial States Athletic Conference Tournament, Manoppello contributed three goals, two groundballs and two draw controls. As a result of its win, Cabrini will advance to Tuesday’s semifinal round where it will face second-seeded Gwynedd-Mercy College. On Tuesday, Manoppello contributed a pair of goals in Cabrini’s 15-7 win over Centenary College.
Freshman Aubrey Bossert (Wissahickon) contributed an assist in #14 Bloomsburg’s 13-10 loss to #12 Mercyhurst in the quarterfinals of the PSAC Lacrosse Tournament on Tuesday. The Huskies closed out the season fourth in the PSAC with a record of 7-5 (10-7 overall).
MEN’S SOCCER
Senior Tim Pfender (Neshaminy) was named the MVP for men’s soccer at Bloomsburg’s annual Awards and MVP dinner on Wednesday night. The senior captain and former All-Conference player was a key member of the Huskies defense this season that limited teams to just under two goals per game. As one of just three seniors on the roster, Pfender helped the Huskies stay together as the team overcame some early season adversity. The one goal he scored this season was a big one as it was the only score of the game in the Huskies’ win over 9th-ranked Slippery Rock.
SOFTBALL
Erin Holloway (Souderton) was named MVP of the PSAC Softball Tournament. The senior righthander led IUP to its first ever PSAC title, starting and completing all six PSAC tournament games. In six tournament games, Holloway threw three shutouts and allowed only 16 hits and four runs – three earned – while striking out 57. Her ERA for the tournament was 0.51, and opponents batted just .119 against her. She had 30 strikeouts in three games in this weekend’s championship series at Kutztown. Holloway increased her school-record totals to 73 wins, 98 complete games, 30 shutouts and 958 strikeouts, ranking third in PSAC history in the latter category. IUP, ranked 17th in the nation by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, will be making its second straight NCAA Tournament appearance when play begins on Friday.
In Saturday’s 7-2 win over West Chester in the championship game, Holloway allowed seven hits while striking out five. Teammate Dee Eppinger (North Penn) delivered a double and scored a pair of runs. On Friday, IUP needed 10 innings to defeat Kutztown 3-1. Holloway threw all 10 innings, allowing just two hits while walking three and fanning 11. Earlier in the day, Holloway tossed a one-hitter and struck out 11 in IUP’s 2-0 win over West Chester. Freshman Mary Ward (North Penn) contributed a double.
Sophomore Devon Utterback (Central Bucks South) tossed a four-hit shutout to lead West Chester to a 2-0 win over host Kutztown on Friday in PSAC Tournament action. Utterback, who improved to 17-5 on the season, struck out one and walked three.
Freshman Stephanie Farrar (North Penn) was 4-for-4 with a double and two runs scored in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 5-2 loss to Cedar Crest on Tuesday. Teammates Renee Stiteler (Plymouth Whitemarsh) and Nicole Paleologus (Bensalem) each contributed a pair of hits. In Gwynedd’s 4-3 loss in the second game of the twinbill, Paleologus delivered an RBI double while Stiteler and Farrar each had a pair of hits. Wendell Tegan (Abington) contributed one hit.
Farrar was selected the CSAC Player of the Week for the week ending April 25 after notching a double, triple and two home runs with five RBIs, eight runs scored, two walks and two stolen bases in a 4-0 CSAC week. Two of her home runs came in one game against PBU while finishing with three RBIs and two runs. The freshman had a double and triple with two RBIs and three runs scored in game one against Rosemont.
Courtney Zingle (Hatboro-Horsham) had a pair of hits and an RBI in Mount St. Mary’s 4-3 loss in nine innings to Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday. Teammate Beth Everist (North Penn) had two hits in the nightcap, an 8-4 Fairleigh Dickinson win.
Jamie Schwartz (Souderton) had a two-out, two-run single in the seventh inning of Eastern University’s 7-2 loss to Muhlenberg College.
Samantha Schoell (North Penn) delivered a solo home run in Temple’s 4-3 loss to St. Bonaventure on Sunday. The Owls came back to win the nightcap 6-3. On Tuesday, Schoell had a hit and scored a run in Temple’s 5-4 loss to St. Joe’s.
Penn State Berks freshman Dayna Harrison (Pennsbury) was named to the North Eastern Athletic Conference Southern Division first team at shortstop. Harrison led the team with a .454 batting average and a .660 slugging percentage. She broke the single season school record in home runs (four) and RBIs (41). She also scored 27 runs and recorded six doubles, a triple and five stolen bases. Teammate Shari Lynn Kluth (Norristown) also earned a spot on the first team for her play in the outfield. Kluth hit .361 and had a team-high 16 stolen bases. The freshman outfielder scored 34 runs and drove in 17 runs. Kluth, a permanent fixture at the top of the Nittany Lion batting order, had a team-high 108 at-bats.
MEN’S SWIMMING Senior Ben Safran (Central Bucks West) was named the Senior Scholar-Athlete for the 2010-11 year in men’s swimming at Bloomsburg’s annual Awards and MVP dinner on Wednesday night. Safran has a 3.72 GPA while majoring in Business Marketing. He has been a four-year member of the men’s swimming team and is a four-year PSAC Scholar-Athlete. He has been in the Executive Board of Honors program for four years. In the pool, Safran qualified for the PSAC championships each of his four years and has the third fastest time in the 200-fly in school history and two of the all-time 10 best times in school history. This past season he served as team captain and finished first in the PSAC consolation finals. Out of the pool, Safran has been active in SAAC (Student Athletic Advisory Committee) for two years, serving as the Executive Committee Chairman this year.
Freshman Mark DiLemmo (Central Bucks East) was named the MVP for men’s swimming at Bloomsburg’s annual Awards and MVP dinner on Wednesday. As a freshman, DiLemmo swam a 1:54.57, an NCAA ‘B’ cut time, in the finals of the 200-fly at the conference championships to earn All-PSAC honors. In the process, he also broke a 32-year-old school record for the event set by BU Hall of Famer Wayne Richards in 1979. DiLemmo also took eighth in the 100 fly at the PSAC championships and was 10th in the 500 free and scored a team-high 34 points in the championship. All together, he had three all-time top five swims at BU as a freshman.

Paul Reilly (Upper Dublin) was part of La Salle University’s 4x800 relay team that finished eighth at the Penn Relays on Saturday with a time of 7:29.03. It was the top time recorded by an Explorer 4x800 relay team so far this spring. Junior Nick Crits (Wissahickon) was part of La Salle’s distance medley relay team that finished eighth at the Penn Relays with a time of 10:02.53.
Junior Keith Ogden (Cheltenham) led Millersville with an NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 100-meter hurdles at the Paul Kaiser Classic at Shippensburg University on Saturday. He took first place in the 400-meter hurdles, beating the second place finisher by two-hundredths of a second. His time of 53.32 seconds not only earned him an NCAA provisional qualifying standard, but his personal best also puts Ogden third all time in Millersville history.
Elizabethtown’s Chris Niles (Central Bucks South) posted a season best in the 400-meter run at Saturday’s Paul Kaiser Track and Field Classic hosted by Shippensburg University, finishing 11th overall and third among other Division 3 runners with a time of 51.17. In that race, teammate Luke Rotenberger (Quakertown) finished with a time of 52.06, good enough for 15th place and fifth among D-3 runners.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Penn State freshman Brittney Howell (Cheltenham) finished third in the women’s heptathlon at the Penn Relays. Howell racked up a career-best total of 4,604 – just 134 points behind winner Kelly Curtis of Springfield College with 4,738. Her performance sits sixth in the conference. Howell’s afternoon included performances of 17-1.25 (5.21) in the long jump, 92-9 (28.29) in the javelin, and 2:33.22 for the 800-meter run.
Bloomsburg’s Lauren Bond (Neshaminy) improved her PSAC seeding placement in the 5000 at the Maroon and Gold Invitational on Saturday, posting a time of 18:46.98.
Sophomore Darcela Llanos (Abington) was part of Widener’s 4x100 relay team that finished fourth in the Lions’ Invitational, posting a time of 51.28 seconds.
Megan Meyer (Central Bucks South) put her name in the Millersville record books after finishing in eighth place in the 800-meter run at the Paul Kaiser Classic at Shippensburg University on Saturday. She set a personal record and placed herself fourth all time at Millersville in the event with a time of 2:16.71.
