BASEBALL
Jake Drossner (Council Rock North) pitched 5 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball in the University of Maryland’s 6-4 win over Pittsburgh last Sunday. He allowed just two hits and retired 11 straight batters from the second into the sixth inning but did not factor in the decision.
Kutztown junior Brandon Martinez (North Penn) was named to the second team of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and Daktronics All-Atlantic Region. The North Penn grad is now a two-time all-region player. He was named to the All-PSAC East First Team in 2014 for the second time in his career. He is batting a career-high .403 this season for fourth in the PSAC and eighth in KU single-season history. He was also named to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District 2 First Team and is on the ballot for the All-America team. Martinez’s 2014 season was highlighted by breaking KU’s 31-year stolen base record of 30 swiped bags in a season. He is 34-for-35 on stolen base attempts this season, the highest stolen base percentage in the PSAC among players with 20 or more. He also holds a perfect fielding percentage with a career-high 93 putouts this season.
Martinez was 2-for-5 in Kutztown’s 3-1 season-ending loss to Millersville in the NCAA division II Atlantic Regionals on Saturday. In Thursday’s 3-2 loss to Millersville in an opening round game, Martinez was 2-for-5 with a stolen base. In regional play, Kutztown earned wins over Winston-Salem (1-0) and Shepherd (3-2).
Junior Matt Hanson (Central Bucks West) was 3-for-4 with a double in Moravian’s 4-3 season-ending loss to Misericordia in the 2014 NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Regional on Thursday.
Freshman Greg McDonough (Wissahickon) legged out an infield single to plate a run in Widener’s 8-1 win over La Roche on Wednesday to open the NCAA Tournament Mideast Regional.
Philadelphia University designated hitter Ken McCormick (Pennsbury) was voted on to the Daktronics Division II All-East Region second team by the region’s sports information directors. An All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) first team selection, McCormick finished ninth in the conference with a career-high .353 batting average. He led the Rams with 47 base hits, the CACC’s 11th best total, a .408 on-base percentage, 13 multi-hit games, and four sacrifice flies. McCormick finished second on the team with 23 runs batted in and 52 total bases, fourth with a .391 slugging percentage and fifth with 15 runs scored and 12 walks. He recorded a hit in 18 straight games and reached base safely in 21 consecutive contests.
JT Crits (Wissahickon) was 1-for-4 with an RBI and run scored while Dan Callahan (Council Rock South) was 1-for-3 with two walks in La Salle’s 9-9 tie with Saint Louis on Senior Day Saturday. The game ended in a tie due to SLU’s prearranged travel plans.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Senior Fran Rafferty (Upper Merion) was named the 2014 recipient of the Cabrini College Mother Ursula Award. Named in honor of the college’s first president, the Mother Ursula Award began in 1968 to honor a senior student and is the only award given to a student that is voted on by his/her peers. Rafferty, a three-year captain of the men’s basketball team, closed his career with 1,403 points, fourth on Cabrini’s all-time list. The senior also ranks 16th on the program’s all-time rebounding list with 559 boards. For his career, Rafferty connected on 50.1 percent of his field goals, including 41 percent from three-point range. He earned All-Colonial States Athletic Conference First Team accolades in 2014 and was named to the All-Middle Atlantic Region Second Team by both D3hoops.com and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). He was part of a senior class that had 106 victories, most of any class in program history, and a 67-5 mark in conference games. The group won four consecutive conference titles and boasted an 11-4 mark in NCAA Tournament play, including three Sweet 16 appearances and a trip to the 2012 National Championship game. The award is given to the senior, in the opinion of his or her classmates, who has best fulfilled the ideals of the college through academic achievement, participation in extracurricular activities, leadership and service to fellow classmates and Cabrini College. Rafferty was announced as the award winner during the Senior Class Dinner and will be officially presented with the award at Commencement by the President of the Alumni Association.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Amy Cross (Upper Dublin) and Kelly Cross (Upper Dublin) are part of a Syracuse team that is headed back to the Final Four for the third consecutive year after an 11-9 come-from-behind victory over No. 6 Boston College in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Tournament on Saturday in the Carrier Dome. The Orange will face sixth-seeded Virginia in the national semifinals on Friday in Towson, Md. No. 2 Syracuse improved its record to 20-2, marking the first time it has won 20 games in a season. The Orange will make its fifth appearance in the Final Four in the last seven years next weekend. It marks the first time Syracuse has advanced to the national semifinals in three consecutive seasons. Amy Cross contributed an assist and three ground balls in Saturday’s win. In last Sunday’s 13-6 win over Stony Brook in a second round game, Kelly Cross had a goal and an assist.
Freshman goalie Kelly Schlupp (Council Rock South) recorded a career-high nine saves in The College of New Jersey’s 13-7 win over Washington & Lee University on Saturday in a second round game of the NCAA Division III Women’s Lacrosse Tournament. Seven of those came in the second half when Washington & Lee was attempting to extend its season.
Penn State senior defender Lauren Purvis (Hatboro-Horsham) garnered IWLCA All-West Region First Team honors for the first time in her career. The ALC Defensive Player of the Year, Purvis helped anchor the Nittany Lion defense with a conference-leading 1.61 caused turnovers per game. The defensive stalwart secured 29 caused turnovers, 27 ground balls and eight draw controls. An All-ALC First Team selection, Purvis earned at least three caused turnovers in five games this season, including a career high five in a 21-8 win against Drexel.
Lock Haven senior Lindsay Walbrandt (Souderton) was named to the 2014 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) NCAA Division II All-American second team. A two-way threat, she had 13 goals, one assist, 14 caused turnovers, 26 ground balls and 28 draw controls.
Lock Haven junior Kelly Hamilton (Central Bucks South) was named to the 2014 IWLCA Division II All-American third team. The CB South grad had 52 goals on the season to go along with eight assists.
Hamilton scored three goals, including the game winner with 1:49 remaining in overtime, in No. 5 Lock Haven’s 10-9 win in OT over No. 6 Lendenwood in Saturday’s NCAA Division II semifinal. The win was the 17th straight for Lock Haven and propelled the squad into its second national championship game in the last five seasons. Melinda Wojt (Souderton) came up with a ground ball to set up the game-tying goals. In Sunday’s 7-5 loss to top-ranked Adelphi (22-0) in the NCAA DII Championship game, Hamilton contributed a goal, and Wojt led LHU with two caused turnovers and three ground balls.
SOFTBALL
Lehigh sophomore Morgan Decker (Central Bucks South) was selected to the NFCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region first team. It is the second time in as many years she has received this recognition after also garnering Patriot League Player of the Year honors for the second straight year. The sophomore third baseman led the Mountain Hawks in most offensive categories in 2014, including batting average (.412), doubles (12), home runs (nine) and RBI (39). Decker leads the Patriot League in home runs and tops the league with 32 walks, a .725 slugging percentage and a .548 on-base percentage. For her career, Decker is batting .414 with 18 home runs and 85 RBI. She has a .718 career slugging percentage and a .547 career on-base percentage.
Binghamton freshman designated hitter Bridget Hunt (Harry S Truman) was named to the America East All-Tournament Softball Team. The Truman grad hit a team best .444 (4-for-9) during the tournament. In the Bearcats’ opener against Albany, she became the first player in program history to hit for the cycle. Prior to the America East Tournament, Hunt was named to the conference’s All-Rookie Team. She finished the year with a .329 batting average, seven home runs and 25 RBIs.
Jess Schuck (Council Rock South) doubled and drove in a run in West Chester’s 3-1 win over West Virginia Wesleyan in a decisive game three of the Atlantic Super Regional on Sunday afternoon. Kim Begley (Abington) also doubled, and Erin Quense (Neshaminy) singled and scored a run. As a result of the win, West Chester (41-20) advances to the NCAA Division II National Finals for the first time in school history after taking the regional series, two games to one. Begley finished the three-game series 3-for-8 with a pair of doubles. The Abington grad also made two spectacular catches in right field during Saturday’s doubleheader. In Saturday night’s 5-1 loss, Laura Altenburger (Neshaminy) was 2-for-3 with the only RBI. In Saturday’s 4-2 win over West Chester Wesleyan, Begley was 2-for-3 with a double. Schuck singled and drove in a run, and Altenburger also singled.

The honor roll recognizes all spring student-athletes who have reached sophomore standing or higher with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher.
St. Joseph’s junior Ashley Alden (William Tennent) was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Region Second Team. Joining the Hawks after spending the previous two seasons at Rutgers, Alden helped St. Joe’s to its seventh straight Atlantic 10 Championship appearance and earned A-10 All-Conference Second Team honors. Starting all 42 games, she finished the year with a career high .345 batting average and led the team in hits (39), home runs (6), RBIs (23) and slugging percentage (.584). Providing power in the middle of the lineup, Alden made an impressive showing in her first A-10 Championship, finishing with a team-high eight RBIs, two home runs, a .345 batting average and a 1.000 slugging percentage en route to being named to the A-10 All-Championship Team.

The honor roll recognizes all spring student-athletes who have reached sophomore standing or higher with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher.
Shippensburg sophomore Jalen Ramsey (Norristown) qualified for the 2014 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the high jump.
Widener senior Stas Starovoytov (Neshaminy) finished sixth in the hammer throw at 149’ 0.5” at the Tuppany Twilight at Swarthmore on Monday.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Junior Alicia Evans (Quakertown) is part of Michigan State’s 4x100 relay that clocked a time of 45.32, tying their season best and finishing second at the David Rankin Invitational at Purdue University earlier this month. In the preliminaries at the Big 10 Championships this weekend, Evans advanced to the finals of the 200m dash, finishing fourth with a time of 23.79.
Freshman Lauren Suelke (Quakertown) was 15th in the triple jump with a leap of 10.90 meters (35 feet, 9.25 inches) at the 2014 ECAC Division III Championships on Thursday. Earlier in the season, Suelke finished first at the 2014 Lehigh Games with an ECAC qualifying distance of 10.90 meters. She also placed third in the long jump at 5.15 meters (16 feet. 10.75 inches). At the close of the indoor season, the Quakertown grad was named the Landmark Conference Indoor Championships Field Co-Athlete of the Year after capturing first place in the long jump.

Ursinus sophomore Elizabeth Cooley (Quakertown) received All-Centennial honorable mention recognition. She finished third in the pole vault at the Centennial Conference Championships, clearing a height of 10 feet.
Zakiyyah Richardson (Pennsbury) was part of Gwynedd Mercy’s first place 4x100 relay at the Swarthmore Final Qualifier on Monday, posting a program record time of 47.98 seconds. The time is ranked 23rd in the country and shaved 0.42 seconds off the previous school record established earlier this season. Junior AnaLee Rodriguez (Pennsbury) finished 11th in the shot put and established a new season-best with her mark of 10.62 meters.
Widener junior Amber Char (William Tennent) was sixth in the pole vault (10’2”) at the Tuppany Twilight at Swarthmore on Monday.
Bloomsburg’s Tayler Harkins (North Penn) earned All-Atlantic Region honors in the discus. The North Penn grad wrote her name in the school record books this spring, breaking her own BU mark with a toss of 45.14 meters (148’1”) at the Maroon and Gold Invitational, breaking her previous record of 44.45 meters. She also placed at the conference meet in the shot put.
