BASEBALL
Junior Greg Welsh (Council Rock South) posted the first complete game shutout of his career on Friday, firing 9.0 scoreless innings for a new career record to lead Penn State to a 9-0 win over Michigan State. Welsh allowed just five hits and walked only one while striking out two.

Sophomore outfielder Matt Hanson (Central Bucks West) was 1-for-2 with an RBI in Moravian’s 5-3 season-ending loss to Neumann in the first elimination game of the NCAA Division III Auburn NY Regional on Friday. In Thursday’s 11-2 loss to Ithaca in an opening round game, Hanson was 3-for-4 with a double.

Sophomore second baseman Billy Fleming (Council Rock South) drove in the go-ahead run in West Virginia’s 5-4 win at No. 16 Oklahoma State on Saturday afternoon. The win guaranteed West Virginia a Top 4 finish in the Big 12 Conference standings.

Senior closer Eric Ruth (North Penn) hammered down his 10th save of the season in Winthrop’s 5-2 win over Wake Forest on Tuesday night. The North Penn grad struck out the side in the ninth to secure the win for the Eagles. Ruth ranks first in program history with a 0.50 ERA, a .176 opponent batting average and 12.88 strikeouts per nine innings (minimum 35 innings pitched). His 10 saves this season ranks third all-time for the Eagles. In Friday’s 3-2 win in 12 innings over Asheville, Ruth threw 5.1 innings in relief to collect his third win of the season. He allowed just three hits while walking none and striking out three.

Rider junior designated hitter Jerry Mulderig (Council Rock South) was named to the Division I All-State First Team by the New Jersey College Baseball Association. Mulderig leads Rider (33-18) with a .347 batting average with 58 hits and 16 stolen bases in 48 games. He has a slugging percentage of .449 and an on-base percentage of .439. According to an article on Rider's web site, Mulerig, a pre-med major, is expected to be offered a chance to play professionally this summer. The 2010 Rock South graduate led the Broncos to first place in the Metro Atlantic Conference as the ultimate utility player. Mulderig saw time in the outfield, as designated hitter and on the mound. Mulerig also excels in the classroom and plans to attend medical school. Mike Bradstreet (North Penn) earned the win in Rhode Island’s 4-1 win over St. Joe’s on Thursday, allowing just four hits while fanning five over six scoreless innings of work.

Craig Lepre (North Penn) was 1-for-3 with a run scored in the University of Albany’s 5-4 win over Stony Brook in game two of a twinbill on Friday. Albany lost the weekend series with Stony Brook and dropped to third place behind Maine and Binghamton in the regular season standings. Albany will begin play in the America East Tournament on Wednesday against Binghamton. The winner of the tournament will receive an automatic bid to the Division One National Regionals.

St. Peter’s University’s James Smith (North Penn) was named to the 2013 Division I All-State Team by the New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association. Smith is hitting .274 on the year with 10 doubles and has driven in 23 runs while scoring 21. For the season, he has thrown out 47 of 78 would-be base stealers. In conference action, Smith is second on the year, batting .300 with 12 runs and 11 RBIs and has thrown out 23 of 33 would-be base steals.

Smith was 2-for-2 and drove in two runs in St. Peter’s 3-2 loss to Iona College in its season finale on Friday.

Michael Corrigan (William Tennent) was 2-for-2 with a run scored in Penn State Abington’s 14-9 loss to McDaniel in the ECAC semifinals on Wednesday.

Will Erskine (North Penn), Connor Macfarlane (Council Rock North) and Bobby Morak (Abington) were named to the Penn State Abington’s 2013 Director’s List. Student-athletes completed the Spring 2013 semester with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

MEN’S BASKETBALL/WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Penn State Abington sophomore Jessica Schmidt (Abington) received the Wes Olsen Memorial Scholar Athlete Award. This award was established in 1980 by the former Athletic Director. Wes Olsen, to honor one male and female athlete who participated in the current school year and has the highest cumulative GPA after completion of two semesters. She also won the Outstanding Student-Athlete award, which is given to the most outstanding student-athlete who has demonstrated the characteristics commensurate with the Penn State Abington athletic tradition of leadership, character and morals.
Penn State Abington sophomore Mike Marvin (Hatboro-Horsham) received the Outstanding Student-Athlete award, given to the most outstanding student-athlete who has demonstrated the characteristics commensurate with the Penn State Abington athletic tradition of leadership, character and morals. Marvin was named NEAC men’s basketball Player of the Year.
Both Schmidt and Marvin were named to Penn State Abington’s 2013 Director’s List, which is comprised of student-athletes who completed the Spring 2013 semester with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

was named to Penn State Abington’s 2013 Director’s List, which is comprised of student-athletes who completed the Spring 2013 semester with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

MEN’S GOLF
Penn State golfer Dylan Amin (Abington) received the Wes Olsen Memorial Scholar Athlete Award. WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Freshman Kelly Cross (Upper Dublin) scored a goal in fourth-seeded Syracuse’s 13-9 win over Florida on Saturday. As a result of the win, Syracuse earned its second consecutive berth in the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Final Four. Amy Cross (Upper Dublin) is a starting midfielder for the Orange, who will face Maryland in a semifinal game on Friday at Villanova University.

was named to Penn State Abington’s 2013 Director’s List, which is comprised of student-athletes who completed the Spring 2013 semester with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

SOFTBALL
West Chester University senior pitcher Devon Utterback (Central Bucks South) was named to the 2013 All-PSAC East as well as the second team of the 2013 Daktronics Inc., All-Atlantic Region squad. Utterback became just the second pitcher in school history to win 20 games in a single season while breaking the single-season mark for strikeouts. She pitched the Golden Rams to the NCAA Super Regionals for the first time in school history. Utterback had a 1.96 ERA in 40 appearances and 31 starts. She also had a pair of saves. Utterback had eight shutouts on the year and had 157 strikeouts in 211 innings pitches. She tossed a two-hitter in a win over No. 8 Cal that advanced West Chester into the Super Regional.

West Chester junior Megan Kelly (Hatboro-Horsham) received an at-large spot on the 2013 All-PSAC East squad. Kelly ranks second on the Golden Rams with a .356 batting average. She has 48 hits and has scored 39 runs this season. Her 36 stolen bases is a new school single-season record and leads the PSAC. She has six doubles, one triple and one home run this spring.

West Chester infielder Jess Schuck (Council Rock South) was named to the second team of the 2013 Daktronics Inc., All-Atlantic Region squad. As of the date of May 13, Schuck was hitting .333 (3-for-9) in the NCAA Tournament and had not made an error in nine chances. The Council Rock South grad was hitting .296 (42-for-142) on the season with a team-high 11 doubles, one triple and two home runs. She knocked in 29 runs and scored 12. Her four sacrifice flies is also a team high.

Kelly, Ali Vavala (Central Bucks East) and Laura Altenburger (Neshaminy) each registered a hit in West Chester’s season-ending 2-1 loss to Kutztown in the second game of the best-of-three NCAA Division II Super Regional on Saturday. Utterback (22-11) limited Kutztown to four hits in her final college appearance. She walked three and struck out two. She ends her career with a school-record 371 strikeouts, including another school mark with 163 strikeouts this season. Utterback’s 22 wins are the second most in a single season at West Chester. She finished her career 55-32 with a 2.47 ERA. Sophomore catcher Erin Quense (Neshaminy) caught 13 base stealers, which ranks third in a single season at West Chester.

Shippensburg sophomore Liz Parkins (Souderton) was recognized by both the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) and Daktronics with second team honors on both squads as a utility player/pitcher. Parkins was valuable at both third base and in the circle. Her only loss in the circle was a 2-0 setback in the PSAC Tournament as she finished the campaign with a 9-1 record and team-best 1.49 ERA. In 70 innings, Parkins allowed just 15 earned runs and struck out 68. She allowed two earned runs or less in 10 of 11 starts and just three earned runs in the other. In the field, Parkins made 16 starts at third base – totaling 12 RBIs, three multi-hit games and four multi-RBI games despite limited at-bats. She also committed just one error defensively.

Lehigh freshman Morgan Decker (Central Bucks South) was named to the NFCA Mid-Atlantic Region first team. Decker put together one of the finest individual offensive seasons in school history as she became the first student-athlete to be named Patriot League Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year in the same season. She finished her freshman campaign as the Patriot League’s leader in all three triple crown categories with a .415 batting average, nine home runs and 46 runs batted in. Decker also leads the Patriot League in on-base percentage, slugging percentage and walks and is tied for second with 15 doubles. The CB South grad batted .456 in Patriot League play and reached base safely in each of the last 25 games of the regular season. Decker batted .475 in April with five home runs and 24 RBIs as Lehigh went on a 21-3 run that propelled the Mountain Hawks to the Patriot League regular season championship.

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Johns Hopkins sophomore Michael Spadaro (Council Rock South) was the Centennial Conference decathlon champion and earned first team All-Centennial Conference honors.

Senior Dave Manion (Central Bucks West) was part of St. Joseph’s 4x800 relay team that finished third in its heat at the IC4A Outdoor Championships last weekend, posting a time of 7:35.21 before posting a finals time of 7:39.17 for a sixth place finish. Sophomore Tyler Dougherty (Central Bucks South) anchored a pair of relay squads that each placed in the top 20. The 4x400m relay took 16th (3:16.01) while the 4x100m relay rounded out the top 20 of the event in 42.54.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Shippensburg senior Caitlin Stuetz (Cheltenham) received 2013 USTFCCCA All-Region honors for her performances in the 100-meter hurdles (14.07) and the 400-meter hurdles (1:00.81) at the PSAC Outdoor Championships. The top five from each region in individual events earned the All-Region distinction. Stuetz was accepted to compete at the 2013 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which will be held May 23-25 at the Neta and Eddie DeRose Thunderbowl on the campus of Colorado State University at Pueblo. Stuetz was selected for the 400-meter hurdles. It is her second consecutive trip to the Thunderbowl after placing ninth last year in the 400-meter hurdles. The 2013 PSAC Outdoor Championships Track and Overall MVP finished her conference championships career with two more hurdles titles and a win on the 4x4 relay – bringing her career haul to three PSAC titles in the 100 hurdles and two in the 400 hurdles. She will be seeded 14th this year. Last year, Stuetz was seeded ninth and finished ninth in the finals.
