Baseball

Kutztown University’s James Quigley (Bensalem) was named to the second team PSAC East squad. The third baseman/designated hitter batted .351 with eight doubles, four homers, 32 RBIs and 25 runs scored.
Beau Ziegler (North Penn), a senior at the University of Texas at Tyler, had a team-high 24 mound appearances this season. He compiled a 5-1 record with a 2.62 ERA, striking out 55 in 34 innings pitched. UT Tyler, which compiled a 39-12 mark this season, advanced to the NCAA Division III Regional Tournament.
Bloomsburg junior Tony Donofry (Council Rock South) has been named to the 2009 CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America)/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District second team. He was voted to the team with a GPA of 3.71 in Business Education. He was just one of three Division II players named to the District Two team that covers D-II and D-III schools in Pennsylvania, Maryland and New Jersey. He also earned second team All-PSAC honors. A shortstop, Donofry was second on the team in batting with a mark of .396 and led the Huskies in runs scored with 45 and was second in hits with 65, doubles with 14 and RBIs with 30. He also led the Huskies in stolen bases with 18. He was tough in the clutch, delivering 14 two-out RBIs and hitting .583 with two outs and runners in scoring position. He had 19 games with two or more hits and finished the year with a 14-game hitting streak.
East Stroudsburg senior Mark Angelo (Quakertown) was named to the ABCA All-Region first team and will advance to the All-America ballot. He was also named to the Daktronics Division II Baseball All-Atlantic Region second team. A first team All-PSAC East team member, Angelo closed out his career with five school records and was in the top five in the PSAC in eight offensive categories. He hit .421, tied for fourth in school history, and set or tied school records with 77 hits, 21 doubles, 12 home runs, 34 extra-base hits and 136 total bases. He had a .481 on-base percentage and a .743 slugging percentage, collected 58 RBIs and scored 57 runs in 53 games. He led the PSAC with nine home runs, 68 total bases and an .850 slugging percentage in conference games. A three-year letter winner and second team All-Patriot League first baseman as a senior at Bucknell, Angelo, a graduate student, moved to third base this year at ESU, starting 38 games at the position. He was the PSAC East Player of the Week twice in the final three weeks of the season. For his four-year collegiate career, Angelo had a .351 batting average with 178 hits, 32 doubles, five triples and 14 home runs, amassing 114 RBIs and scoring 109 runs. He hit .316 with a team-high 37 RBIs as a senior at Bucknell, which won the Patriot League championship and upset top seed Florida in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Senior Jamie Abercrombie (Hatboro-Horsham) broke the single-season doubles record and finished his career second on the all-time hit list as Temple dropped its final game of the season by a 7-5 score at Fordham’s Houlihan Park last Saturday night. Abercrombie doubled in the first and eighth to give him 22 doubles this season and 230 hits for his career. The senior entered the game tied for the single season doubles record. He is second all-time in doubles with 47. His 230 career hits were four short of Bib Filler’s program record.
Charlie Kelly (Council Rock South) was 4-for-4 with two runs batted in and three runs scored to earn tournament MVP honors and lead seventh-ranked West Chester University to a 14-0 victory in the championship game of the 2009 NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional on Sunday at Owls Field at Ted Palka Park in West Lawn, Pa. Kelly sparked three separate four-run rallies in the title game. He led off the second inning with a 400-foot triple to dead center. He led off the third with a single and scored the first run of another four-run inning. In the eighth, he hit his seventh home run of the season over the 415-foot sign in center field for a two-run shot that ignited the third four-run inning of the game. Blair Dameron (Pennridge) hit his 13th home run of the season in the ninth inning, setting a new single-season school record. He finished 2-for-6 with two runs scored and an RBI. West Chester advanced to the Division II World Series, which is being held May 23-30 in Cary, N.C., at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.
Women’s Lacrosse
University of Pennsylvania senior Becca Edwards (Springfield) scored with five seconds remaining in overtime to defeat Duke 10-9 last Saturday and advance to the NCAA final four for the third consecutive year. Edwards led the Quakers with four goals and an assist. Penn fell to undefeated Northwestern 13-12 in double overtime on Friday night.
Softball
Bucknell senior Ashley Carlson (Pennsbury) was named to the Patriot League All-Tournament Team. She helped lead Bucknell to a 7-3 victory over Colgate. Carlson led the Bison in the tournament, batting .500 (4-for-8) with a double and a run scored in three games. She also was recognized for playing outstanding defense and had an inning-ending diving catch against Lafayette in right field.
Freshman Niki Cognigni (Pennsbury) started 49 games for the University of Pittsburgh, compiling a .222 batting average with 18 RBIs, six doubles and two home runs. Teammate Jess Rhodunda (Pennsbury) saw action in 20 games.
Mount St. Mary’s sophomore Courtney Zingle (Hatboro-Horsham) saw action in 43 games, starting 39. She batted .290 with 22 RBIs, nine doubles and two home runs. She boasted a .988 fielding percentage with one error in 82 attempts. Sophomore Beth Everist (North Penn) played in 42 games, starting 38. She hit .252 with a team-high 27 RBIs. She shared the team lead with four home runs and also had six doubles. Freshman Amy Sadowl (Hatboro-Horsham) took the mound in 21 games, starting 12. She was 4-8.
Shippensburg junior Lisamarie Ramagli (Neshaminy) started and played in 45 games, hitting .313 with 25 RBIs, seven doubles and five home runs for a slugging percentage of .481. Sophomore Marissa Nagle (Central Bucks East) hit .176 in 36 games. Freshman Emily Parkins (Souderton) made 11 mound appearances, which included four starts. She was 2-2. Sophomore Moira Johnsen (Council Rock North) started 17 games, batting .226. Sophomore Michelle Gillman (Plymouth Whitemarsh) batted .273 in eight games.
Erin Holloway (Souderton) made 27 mound appearances for IUP, starting 24 games. She closed out the year with a 10-12 record and a 3.17 ERA. In 150.1 innings, she fanned 166. Freshman Jessie James (Hatboro-Horsham) saw action in 15 games, starting 12. Brittany Allman (North Penn) started 37 games, hitting .216 with nine RBIs and nine doubles.
Men’s Tennis
Lee Wexler (Plymouth Whitemarsh) won at second singles, but Bloomsburg saw its season come to a close in a 5-0 loss to 12th-ranked Concordia in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II championships in Florida.
Women’s Tennis
Bloomsburg junior Katie Hasyn (North Penn) was named All-PSAC East in singles play. She posted a record of 11-8 playing at number one singles for the Huskies. She was named PSAC East Player of the Week on April 5 after winning all five of her matches that week. Hasyn has previously been named the PSAC East Freshman of the Year in 2007 and PSAC East Player of the Year in 2008. For her career, hasyn has a record of 39-21. She winning her match at first singles 6-0, 3-2 (unfinished) in Bloomsburg’s 5-0 loss to second-ranked Lynn University in the NCAA Division II national quarterfinals in Altamonte Springs, Fla. The Huskies ended their season with a mark of 15-6.
Women’s Track & Field
Junior Anna Aaegenes (Central Bucks West) ran the best finish of her career and the third best finish in the history of the University of Pennsylvania women’s track and field team on the second day of the three-day ECAC Outdoor Championships in Princeton, N.J., last Saturday. Only two runners in Penn’s history have clocked a better time than Aaegenes’ finish of 2:07.44 during the 2009 ECAC 800-meter preliminaries. The Central Bucks West grad advanced to the finals and finished sixth among 23 premiere runners. Her time, which was just off the Penn record of 2:05.47, ranks Aaegene 10th in the East Region.
