BASEBALL
La Salle saw its season come to an end when the Explorers fell to Dayton 10-5 in day two of the Atlantic 10 playoffs on Thursday. It was the second loss of the day for the Explorers, who fell to second-seeded Rhode Island 7-4 in a winner’s bracket game earlier in the day. La Salle, which closed out the season with a 28-26 record, bids farewell to three seniors, including Chris Umstead (Pennridge) and Zach Huff (Pennridge). In a 6-5 win in 13 innings over No. 3 Dayton in an opening round game Wednesday, Kevin Christy (North Penn) worked 4.1 shutout innings to keep the game within reach for La Salle.
Jon Gyles (Central Bucks West) started 54 of 54 games for La Salle this season and closed out the year with a .297 batting average (58-of-195) with 30 runs scored, 10 doubles, three homeruns and 29 RBIs. Adam Kammler (Pennridge) saw action in 37 games, starting 27. He hit .314 (32-of-102) with 15 runs scored, five doubles, one homerun and 10 RBIs. Eric Kammler (Pennridge) saw action in 36 games, starting 32. He hit .259 with 23 RBIs, seven doubles, 1 triple and two homeruns. Kevin Christy (North Penn) closed out the year with a 6-2 mark and a 3.74 ERA.
Redshirt sophomore pitcher Andy Noga (Cheltenham) was named East Stroudsburg University’s Championship Award Guys Athlete of the Week after leading Division II baseball in fewest walks per nine innings during the 2011 season. Noga walked five batters in 72.1 innings this season, a rate of 0.62 per nine innings, after finishing the season with a nine-inning complete game against Mercyhurst in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional last weekend in Lancaster. He tied the school record with his 12th start, struck out seven, didn’t issue a walk and blanked the Lakers for the first six innings in a 4-1 loss on Saturday night. Noga was 6-5 with six complete games, one shutout, 58 strikeouts and five walks in his 72.1 innings, the seventh most in school history. He set the school record with an 11.6-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio, he is tied for fifth with six victories, and his six victories and his 2.61 ERA are the 10th-lowest by an ESU pitcher since 1985. Noga completed five of seven starts against the PSAC East, including a four-hit, no-earned run performance in a 7-1 win at Mansfield that clinched a PSAC Tournament berth. Noga threw 42.0 innings against divisional opponents with a 2.57 ERA, 35 strikeouts and only two walks. His top start was a five-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and no walks in a 6-0 win over Kutztown in the PSAC East opener. He walked three batters over 15.1 innings in his first three starts of the season and walked just two over 57.0 innings in his final nine starts. Through two seasons, Noga’s 3.38 ERA is the third-lowest at ESU since 1985, and he is tied for third with a .264 batting average against (minimum 100 innings). He has thrown 122.2 innings over 25 games (20 starts) with a 10-7 record, 97 strikeouts and 26 walks.
East Stroudsburg freshman Keith Moyer (Souderton) had 36 strikeouts in 29.1 innings of work this season. The rookie pitcher saw action in 13 games and started two.
Kutztown University sophomore Matt Albaugh (North Penn) was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) All-Atlantic Region third team. The sophomore catcher, who played in 35 games, batted .340 with 36 hits and 18 RBIs. He was tied for third on the team with 10 doubles and had one homerun. He had 11 multi-hit games and was second on the team with six multiple-RBI games. Albaugh had three hits with two RBIs in consecutive games against Shippensburg on March 25 and 26.
Chris Edgar (North Penn) was 1-for-3 with an RBI in Millersville’s 14-3 win over Mercyhurst last Monday as the Marauders rolled to their first NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship since 1998. The win propelled Millersville to the NCAA Championship. In Saturday’s opening round game, Millersville lost to No. 2 Mount Olive 3-1. The Marauders will face Central Missouri on Monday.
Edgar was one of six Millersville players named All-PSAC East. Those same six added NCBWA All-Atlantic Region honors to their resumes. Edgar, who received honorable mention, ranks second on the team in hitting with a .360 batting average, and his .430 on-base percentage is second on the squad.
Freshman Jimmy Smith (North Penn) saw action in 28 games at Saint Peter’s College, starting 11. He hit .279 (12-for-43) with three doubles and five RBIs.
Robbie Zinsmeister (North Penn) started all 50 games for an IUP squad that advanced to the PSAC title game. He closed out his sophomore campaign second on the squad in hitting with a .339 batting average (58-of-171). He finished the year with 40 runs scored while contributing 12 doubles, four triples and one homerun for a slugging percentage of .474.
Sophomore Eric Ruth (North Penn) threw two innings in Winthrop’s 10-6 loss to top-seeded Coastal Carolina in the 2011 Big South Baseball Championship on Thursday, allowing two hits and one unearned run. For the season, Ruth was 6-1 with a 3.66 ERA. He threw 46.2 innings in 24 appearances, walking 14 and striking out 35.
FOOTBALL
Temple junior placekicker Brandon McManus (North Penn) was named to the 2011 preseason All-Mid-American Conference third team. Temple returns 46 lettermen this season, including 13 starters. The Owls will open their 2011 season against cross-town rival Villanova in the third annual Mayor’s Cup on Thursday, Sept. 1, at Lincoln Financial Field.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
East Stroudsburg senior Michelle Mangiaruga (North Penn) has been named to the IWLCA All-South Region second team. A three-time All-PSAC selection, Mangiaruga had 46 goals, 27 assists, 33 ground balls, 15 caused turnovers and 21 draw controls as a senior when she was named to the All-PSAC second team. She was a member of the All-PSAC East first team as a sophomore and junior, scoring 47 goals in 2009 and 40 goals in 2010 and is one of two ESU players with three 40-goal seasons. She ranks third with 148 career goals and 210 points, is tied for fourth with 62 assists and tied for third with 27 assists this season. She was the PSAC Player of the Week with 10 goals and seven assists in wins over Millersville and Shippensburg, part of a run of four straight games with at least four goals.
Shippensburg senior Karen Schnurr (Central Bucks South) was selected to represent the Raider program in the 2011 IWLCA North/South Senior All-Star Game on June 11 in Downingtown. The game will begin at 1 p.m. and will be held at the United Sports Training Center. Schnurr finished the season with a career-high 37 goals to lead the Raiders. As a co-captain, she led the team with 11 free-position tallies, totaled eight hat tricks and won 23 draw controls. For her career, Schnurr scored 84 goals, won 80 draw controls, picked up 73 ground balls and caused 27 turnovers.
Amy Cross (Upper Dublin) recently completed her freshman season on the Syracuse women's lacrosse team. Cross played in all 18 games and helped the Orange to a 10-8 record. Syracuse was 6-1 in the Big East as it earned a share of the conference regular season title. Cross finished the season with 12 points on nine goals and three assists. She also had five ground balls, three draw controls and three caused turnovers.
SOFTBALL
IUP saw its softball season come to an end on Saturday when the Crimson Hawks fell to Midwestern State 3-0 at the Division II World Series in Salem, Va. Senior Erin Holloway (Souderton) finished her career at IUP as the school’s all-time leader in every pitching category and third in PSAC history in strikeouts with 1,004, complete games with 105 and innings pitched with 804 2/3, fifth with 78 wins and sixth with 32 shutouts. Holloway allowed six hits and one earned run, struck out three and walked two in the loss to Midwestern State, which improved to 53-13 and is ranked No. 5 in the country by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. Holloway finished the season with a record of 27-5, one win shy of her single-season record set in 2010. In Thursday’s 9-4 loss to North Georgia, IUP took an early 3-0 lead, but North Georgia scored nine unanswered runs. Holloway reached a career milestone when she fanned Sarah Johnson in the fifth inning, giving her 1,000 in her career, the third pitcher in PSAC history to reach that total. Holloway finished with eight strikeouts in the game but walked five. Teammate Dee Eppinger (North Penn) singled and scored a run in the top of the first inning.
Erin Holloway (Souderton) was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-America first team. Previously this offseason, Holloway was chosen the PSAC Central and Atlantic Region pitcher of the year and MVP of the PSAC tournament when IUP won the conference title for the first time in school history. She joins Marissa Dugan as the only softball players in school history named a first team All-American by the NFCA. She also starred in the circle when the Crimson Hawks won the NCAA Atlantic Region title and earned the program’s first appearance in the Division II World Series.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
La Salle junior Nick Crits (Wissahickon) finished 24th overall and qualified for the quarterfinal round in the preliminary heat of the men’s 1500m on day one of the NCAA East Preliminary at Indiana University on Friday. Crits ran a 3:50.59, three seconds slower than his top time of the season, but did enough to qualify for Saturday’s quarterfinal heat.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
American University’s Erin Koch (Pennridge) and teammate Octavia Rinehardt competed in the NCAA East Regional over the weekend, becoming the first Eagles to compete at the meet since 2009. Koch first ran on Thursday in the 1500-meter run first round and advanced to the quarterfinals by placing fourth in the second heat with a time of 4:30.92. The graduate student then placed ninth in the first heat of the quarterfinals on Saturday, crossing the line in 4:30.99.
