BASEBALL
Jordan Hofferman (Cheltenham)
allowed just three runs on six hits in eight innings in Arcadia University’s 3-1 loss to Alvernia in the MAC Commonwealth Championships on Saturday.

Eastern University junior Tyler Orr (Neshaminy) received second team All-Middle Atlantic Conference honors after emerging this season as a premiere power hitter and outfielder in the league. After appearing in 20 games and receiving 41 at-bats in 2012, Orr earned a starting role in 2013. He batted .322 this season with 30 RBIs and seven home runs. His seven home runs are the second most in a single season at Eastern and third best in the conference this year. Orr also gunned down six baserunners from the outfield.

Senior Drew Frankenfield (Wissahickon) hit his first home run of the year in the second inning of York College’s 10-3 upset over No. 6 Johns Hopkins on Wednesday. Frankenfield finished the game with three hits, two RBIs and three runs scored. Reliever Zach Philippi (Harry S Truman) got the Spartans out of the jam with a 4-6-3 double play with the bases loaded to end the seventh inning.  In last Sunday’s 6-5 loss to No. 18 Ithaca, Frankenfield contributed an RBI double.

Lebanon Valley’s Andrew DeCew (Pennridge) and Tim Filer (Council Rock North) were named to the All-Commonwealth Conference second team. DeCew had a breakout sophomore season starting at second base, hitting .388 and slugging .466. He scored 22 runs and drove in 18 runs while recording 10 multi-hit games. Filer spent time at five different positions, primarily at catcher and third base, while hitting .372 for the Dutchmen. He was one of Lebanon Valley’s hottest bats in April and led the team with a .482 on-base percentage, which included 13 walks and 12 hit-by-pitch passes.

Dylan Tice (Pennridge) was 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBIs in IUP’s 9-2 win over California in game two of a twinbill on Saturday. In IUP’s 4-3 loss in game one, Tice was 2-for-4 and teammate Robbie Zinsmeister (North Penn) also was 2-for-4 with a run scored and RBI. The Crimson Hawks finished in a tie for the fourth spot in the PSAC West but lost out on the final conference tournament spot. In Friday’s doubleheader split with California, Zinsmeister was 3-for-8 with a solo home run and scored twice. In Tuesday’s 11-0 loss to Shippensburg, Jared Weed (Council Rock North) threw a scoreless inning in relief. Tice had a pair of hits.

Cairn University senior Jeremy McAlack (Council Rock North) received All-Colonial States Athletic Conference honorable mention recognition. He received the same recognition in the 2011 season. McAlack also is Cairn’s representative on the CSAC All-Sportsmanship Team.

Freshman lefthander Jake Drossner (Council Rock North) turned in one of the best performances of his young career in Maryland’s 4-2 win over Liberty on Wednesday. The rookie pitcher gave up only one earned run while striking out three to earn his second win. It was his second quality start in his last three outings.

Sophomore second baseman Billy Fleming (Council Rock South) had three hits in West Virginia’s 4-3 loss in 10 innings to No. 10 Oklahoma on Friday evening.

Freshman Jesse Kohler (Upper Dublin) allowed two hits and one run while striking out one in Oberlin College’s 9-6 win over Wittenberg University on Sunday. As a result of the win, Oberlin will take its first ever trip to the NCAC Tournament in program history on May 9. In Tuesday’ 7-6 win in 10 innings over Ohio Northern University, Kohler pitched two innings of no-hit baseball to improve to 3-1 on the season.

Senior closer Eric Ruth (North Penn) collected his eighth save of the season in 1.1 innings of scoreless relief that hammered down Winthrop’s 3-1 win over Charleston Southern on Saturday. In Friday’s 8-3 win over Charleston Southern, Ruth worked a scoreless ninth inning.

Craig Lepre (North Penn) was 2-for-4 in the University of Albany’s 4-3 win over Maine on Saturday. In Sunday’s 7-3 loss to Maine, Lepre collected an RBI.

James Smith (North Penn) had a hit and two RBIs in both games of Saint Peter’s sweep at the hands of Marist on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 13-8 loss to Monmouth, Smith contributed an RBI.

Delaware Valley second baseman Brandon Bell (Norristown) and outfielder Pete O’Hara (Council Rock North) both earned first team All-Freedom Conference honors. It is the first all-conference recognition for both. Bell had a breakout junior campaign as he started all 38 games and batted .343 (second on the team) while leading the Aggies with nine doubles and 35 RBIs. He was second in hits with 49 and tied for second in runs scored with 29. Bell committed just four errors in 150 chances for a .973 fielding percentage. O’Hara started all 38 games in center field and paced the Aggies in batting (.351), hits (52), runs scored (38) and stolen bases (24). He tied for top honors in both triples and home runs with one apiece and was second in doubles (8) and slugging percentage (.439).

Ryan Henritzy (Council Rock North) collected two hits in Lock Haven’s 4-2 loss to Clarion on Saturday. In Lock Haven’s 7-3 loss to Clarion, Henritzy went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

David Pine (Council Rock North) drove in a run in Millersville’s 6-3 win over East Stroudsburg in game two of a twinbill on Saturday. The sweep gave the Warriors the PSAC East title.

In addition to delivering on the field, Chestnut Hill senior shortstop Joseph Crane (Council Rock South) has excelled in the classroom, earning College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Capital One Academic All-District Team honors as a Middle Level Education major with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. As a three-year member of the baseball program, Crane ranks eighth all time in hits (85) and is tied for sixth in RBIs with 60. In his senior season, Crane has 21 runs scored and 20 RBIs while batting .268 (37-for-138) with 11 walks and 15 stolen bases (15-for-19) while also going 2-0 with three saves in 12 appearances out of the bullpen. As a junior, Crane led the team with 28 RBIs while also providing 22.2 innings of relief. In the classroom, Crane has maintained a 4.0 GPA and earned past honors on the Chestnut Hill College Athletics Academic Honor Roll, a 2012 Athletic Directors Association Academic Achiever, and a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference 2012 Spring All-Academic Team member.

Senior Matt Hone (Council Rock North) had a hit in Widener’s 1-0 season-ending loss in the Commonwealth Conference Tournament on Friday.

Gwynedd-Mercy junior John Burns (Neshaminy) received All-CSAC honorable mention. Burns is second on the team in RBIs (29) with seven doubles and two homers. Burns had two hits and two RBIs in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 14-8 loss in the second game of the 2013 CSAC Baseball Tournament on Thursday.

Greg McCuch (Upper Merion) picked up the win in West Chester’s 4-3 win in eight innings on Saturday. The Upper Merion grad allowed three hits and no runs while striking out two in three innings of relief.  In Tuesday’s 14-6 win over Chestnut Hill, Tyler Coleman (Quakertown) went 4-for-6 with a pair of runs scored an a pair of RBIs.

Sophomore outfielder Matt Hanson (Central Bucks West) singled and scored two runs in Moravian’s 8-1 win over Scranton in the winner’s bracket game of the 2013 Landmark Conference Tournament on Sunday. Moravian needs to win just once on Monday to clinch the conference crown while Scranton will need to defeat the Greyhounds twice. In Saturday’s 9-4 win over The United State Merchant Marine Academy, Hanson had one hit and scored three runs. Hanson is tied for 23rd in triples with five and tied for 39th in triples per game at 0.15 in the eighth NCAA Division III statistics of the 2013 season.

Matt Albaugh (North Penn) was 2-for-4 with one RBI in Kutztown’s 4-3 loss to West Chester in eight innings in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday. In the Golden Bears 7-6 loss in 10 innings in game one, Brandon Martinez (North Penn) had eight individual at-bats, the most for the club since the 2011 season and also the most in a PSAC game dating back through the 1999 season. In Friday’s 5-1 win over West Chester, Martinez was 3-for-4 at the plate and accounted for three of Kutztown’s seven hits. In Tuesday’s 8-3 win over Philadelphia University, Martinez had two hits.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Washington College sophomore guard Sean Brooks (North Penn) was named the Most Improved Player for the men’s basketball team.

Whis Grant (Plymouth Whitemarsh) was named MVP of the East Stroudsburg University men’s basketball team.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Washington College freshman forward Carley Kendall (Souderton) was named the Most Improved Player for the women’s basketball team.

MEN’S LACROSSE

Messiah senior Heath Kupecky (Upper Merion) earned second team All-Middle Atlantic Conference honors. Unfortunately, an ankle injury from last season requiring surgery continued to aggravate and forced him to miss four games. However, in the 10 games in which Kupecky was present, he was instrumental from the midfield position. The senior captain was fourth on the team in goals with 13, five of which coming in man-up situations. Kupecky is the only repeat All-Commonwealth selection for Messiah this year.

Senior Alex Casey (Abington) led the defense with four caused turnovers and also had four ground balls in fifth-ranked Gettysburg’s 17-9 win over Washington in the semifinals of the Centennial Conference Championship on Saturday.
Garret Rosiek (Wissahickon) contributed two goals and two assists in Aurora University’s 13-3 win over Carthage in Saturday’s Midwest Lacrosse Conference tournament title game. It is the program’s first title in its brief three-year history. The next action for the squad will come in the 2013 NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse Championships. In Wednesday’s 25-7 win over Mount St. Joseph in an MLC semifinal game, Rosiek had one goal and six assists.

Elizabethtown junior Craig Hunsberger (Pennridge) earned second team All-Commonwealth Conference honors at middle. He led the Blue Jays in scoring with 30 points. He also paced the squad in goals with 24, ground balls with 72 and was its best face-off man, winning 96-of-164 (.585). Hunsberger netted a team-high three game-winning goals and had a five-point performance (four goals, one assist) in an 18-14 win over Immaculata March 20.

Eastern University freshman defenseman Tyler Gehlhaus (Hatboro-Horsham) earned second team All-Middle Atlantic Conference. Only one Freedom Conference team scored more than six goals against the Eagles this year.

Albright freshman Matthew Lomady (Abington) received All-Commonwealth Conference honorable mention recognition. The only Albright rookie named to the team, Lomady totaled 17 points on 15 goals and a pair of assists.

Cabrini senior Joe Hughes (Plymouth Whitemarsh) garnered All-Colonial States Athletic Conference first team accolades at the short stick defense position. The senior took just one shot on the season, and it resulted in his only goal of the year. Hughes paired the goal with an assist in a win at Neumann. Hughes added 11 ground balls and 10 caused turnovers to the Blue and White defensive effort. No. 5 Cabrini clinched its 13th consecutive conference title on Saturday with a 24-3 win over Centenary College. The win extended Cabrini’s winning streak over conference opponents to 121 straight regular season and conference victories. By virtue of that win, Cabrini will make its 12th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.

Widener senior Johnny Casey (Abington) received first team All-Commonwealth Conference honors. The Abington grad has been named to the first team all-league the last two years as well as the 2009 MAC Rookie of the Year. This season Casey is fifth in the league with 37 goals, fourth with 18 assists, fifth with 55 points and first on the team with nine man-up goals.
Casey scored a goal in Widener’s 9-8 loss to No. 4 Stevenson in the Commonwealth Conference final on Saturday.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Freshman Kelly Cross (Upper Dublin) contributed a goal and an assist in No. 5 Syracuse University’s 14-7 win over No. 6 Georgetown in the championship game of the BIG EAST Women’s Lacrosse Tournament on Saturday. The Orange received the No. 4 seed in the 2013 NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Tournament and will host first and second round games next weekend. The top six seeds receive first round byes, and the Orange will take on the winner of the Boston College/Dartmouth game on Sunday. In Thursday’s 19-6 win over No. 18 Connecticut in the BIG EAST Tournament semifinal, Kelly Cross posted a career high four points, contributing three goals and one assist. Amy Cross (Upper Dublin) added a goal.

Lake Erie College senior Julia Kudla (Souderton) has received first team All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors. In her senior season, Kudla recorded a school record 132 points on 46 goals and 86 assists, another program high. Nationally, she ranks third in points and second in assists. She also collected 52 draw controls and 51 ground balls.
Kudla had two goals and one assist in Lake Erie’s 13-11 loss to Tiffin in a GLIAC semifinal game on Friday.

Sophomore Tori Kimberly (Central Bucks West) scored a goal in Penn State Abington’s 12-6 loss to SUNYIT last Sunday in its season finale.

For the second straight year, Bloomsburg University’s Aubrey Bossert (Wissahickon) has been named the recipient of the PSAC Champion Scholar Award at the women’s lacrosse championship. The PSAC Champion Scholar Awards are modeled after the NCAA’s Elite 88 award and honors the student-athlete with the top grade point average who is competing at the site of each of the PSAC’s 23 team championship finals. The selection criteria for the Champion Scholar Awards is identical to that of the NCAA Elite 88 awards, which honor the student-athlete with the top GPA at each of the championship finals sites of the 88 NCAA championships across all three divisions – I, II and III. Bossert has compiled a 3.95 cumulative GPA while majoring in exercise science. She has accumulated 88 credit hours.

Maggie Canavan (Springfield) had a team-high four draw controls in Bloomsburg’s 6-5 loss to top-seeded Lock Haven in the PSAC semifinals on Friday. In Tuesday’s 17-10 quarterfinal win over Mercyhurst, Canavan had two goals.

Gwynedd-Mercy College sophomore Dani Horn (North Penn) received first team All-Colonial States Athletic Conference honors. Horn was among the league leaders in scoring, netting 48 goals and adding 17 assists in 16 games. She also collected 61 draw controls and 47 ground balls. She notched season highs in goals on two occasions, scoring seven times in games against Penn State-Abington and Centenary.

Lindsay Walbrandt (Souderton) had three caused turnovers in No. 6 Lock Haven’s 8-7 loss to No. 7 West Chester in the PSAC Tournament Final on Saturday. Lock Haven will be the No. 3 seed from the South Region in the 2013 NCAA Division II Lacrosse Tournament Championship. Lock Haven will travel to No. 2 Rollins on Saturday. In Friday’s 6-5 win over Bloomsburg in a PSAC semifinal game, Melinda Wojt (Souderton) led the defense with three caused turnovers and three ground balls. Kelly Hamilton (Central Bucks South) scored a goal.

Washington College freshman Carley Kendall (Souderton) was named the Most Improved Player for the women’s lacrosse team.

SOFTBALL
Nicole Battaglio (Upper Merion)
contributed an RBI single in Penn State Abington’s 4-1 loss to Wilson College in Saturday’s first elimination game in the North Eastern Athletic Conference Championship Tournament on Saturday. In Friday’s 7-2 loss to SUNYIT in its NEAC playoff opener, Battaglio went 1-for-3 at the plate.

D’Anna Devine (Pennsbury) moved teammate Kourtney Salvarola to second, setting up the game-winning hit in the University of South Florida’s 2-1 win over Syracuse in eight innings in last Sunday’s regular season finale. USF, which closed out the regular season with a 40-14 record, will return to action in the BIG EAST Tournament May 9-11.

Freshman Haileigh Stocks (Central Bucks South) was 1-of-3 with a run scored and RBI in Robert Morris University’s 9-1 win over Quinnipiac on Sunday. She was 1-for-2 in game two of the twinbill sweep, which earned Robert Morris the top spot heading into the NEC Tournament. In Saturday’s 1-0 over Quinnipiac in game one of a twinbill, Stocks picked up her eighth double of the season, which moved her into the single season top 10 in that category. In last Sunday’s 4-3 win over Bryant, Stocks contributed a double.

Freshman Morgan Decker (Central Bucks South) went 3-for-4 in Lehigh’s 7-0 win over Colgate last Sunday. Her first inning RBI double gave the Mountain Hawks a 1-0 lead. Lehigh will open the three-day Patriot League Tournament against Colgate on May 9. Lehigh has won the last two Patriot League Tournament titles and has won seven of the last nine overall.

Stephanie Farrar (North Penn) doubled and scored a run in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 2-1 win over Immaculata on Friday in the 2013 CSAC Tournament. In Saturday’s 5-1 loss to Keystone, freshman Alexis Deal (Council Rock South) went 2-for-3, driving in the team’s only run with an RBI single in the fourth. In Wednesday’s 2-1 win over Marywood in a CSAC Tournament play-in game, Farrar was 2-for-2 with a double and run scored.

Alvernia senior Deanna Dungee (North Penn) was named to the All-Commonwealth first team. The North Penn grad has an impressive 18-2 record on the season with an ERA of 1.61. Opponents are batting just .239 against her.

Kelly Hendrickson (William Tennent) collected her team’s only hit – a single in the first inning – in Cairn University’s 8-0 loss to Delaware Valley College on Wednesday.

Holy Family junior Rachael Alligood (Harry S Truman) received All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference honorable mention recognition for the second straight season. This year has been a career season for the junior pitcher as she set new career highs in appearances (23), games started (18), earned run average (2.15), shutouts (5), innings pitched (104) and strikeouts (58). Alligood is 8-7 in the pitching circle, tying her career high in victories. She went 8-9 during her freshman season. Through two-plus years, Alligood has a career record of 21-20. She has eight career shutouts and has struck out 150 batters. She also recorded her first career hit during the team’s Florida trip versus Northern State.

Senior Lindsey Iden (Council Rock North) finished 2-for-5 at the plate to go along with five RBIs in Holy Family’s losses to Wilmington University and Bloomfield College in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament on Thursday. The senior third baseman had a two-run double versus Wilmington and hit a three-run home run against Bloomfield. Deanna Myers (William Tennent) concluded her career as the program’s all-time home run leader with 24. Iden ranks eighth all time in program history with 26 doubles. In last Sunday’s 4-3 win over Bridgeport, Alligood pitched three innings in relief to earn her eighth win over the season. She did not allow a hit and struck out two. Iden connected on her second home run on the season, a two-run shot. She finished the game 2-for-2 at the plate to go along with two RBIs.

Freshman Valerie Sadowl (Hatboro-Horsham) contributed a hit in both games of the University of Connecticut's doubleheader split with DePaul on Saturday. On April 25, Sadowl was 2-for-3 with a home run, one run scored and four RBIs to lead the Huskies to a 10-6 win over Albany. Her two-run home run was the first of her collegiate career. 

Sophomore Liz Parkins (Souderton) scattered six hits, walked one and struck out six in No. 20 Shippensburg’s 2-1 loss to West Chester in an elimination game of the 2013 PSAC Tournament on Thursday. It was the first loss of the season for Parkins.

Chelsea Edwards (Hatboro-Horsham) had her team’s only RBI in Lock Haven’s 4-1 loss to West Chester in the opening game of the PSAC Tournament on Wednesday.

West Chester junior second baseman Jess Schuck (Council Rock South) was named the PSAC East athlete of the week for the week ending April 29. In four games last week, Schuck went 6-for-12 at the plate. In the second game versus East Stroudsburg, Schuck went 2-for-3, hit a home run and had five RBIs to help clinch the 8-1 victory. Schuck posted a hit in all four games, two of those being multi-hit games. The junior boasted a five-game hitting streak and improved her overall season batting average to .317. It is the first time Schuck has been named athlete of the week this spring. Schuck is hitting .317 (38-for-12) with a team-high 10 doubles, one triple and a pair of home runs. She has 29 RBIs on the season.

Devon Utterback (Central Bucks South) threw a four-hit shutout in West Chester’s 2-0 win over No. 20 Shippensburg in an elimination game of the 2013 PSAC Softball Tournament on Friday. Megan Kelly (Hatboro-Horsham) contributed a double and RBI. Ali Vavala (Central Bucks East) was 2-for-3 while Erin Quense (Neshaminy) also had a hit. In Wednesday’s 4-1 win over Lock Haven, Utterback scattered four hits in a winning effort. Vavala, Schuck and Kelly each had a hit. Vavala scored a pair of runs. 

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Johns Hopkins sophomore Michael Spadaro (Council Rock South) placed first in the Decathlon at the Centennial Conference Championships on Saturday. He accumulated 5,565 points. On Saturday, he was the top finisher in the 110-meter hurdles (16.66) to grab 660 points and also was the top point-getter in the pole vault (3.74m) to earn 546 points to fuel his victory. Spadaro is the third Johns Hopkins athlete to win the Decathlon. After one day of competition Friday, Spadaro was in third place with 3,009 points. He was first in the 100m dash (11.60) and second in the long jump and shot put. On Sunday, Spadaro finished fifth in the triple jump (44’2”). Johns Hopkins finished second as a team.

Sam Brooks (Wissahickon) was part of Elizabethtown’s 4x800 meter relay that finished second at the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships on Thursday, posting a time of 7:50.48. It was the third fastest time in school history. Brooks also finished fifth in the 1500m with a time of 4:08.09. Teammate Luke Rotenberger (Quakertown) posted a fourth place finish in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 56.28. He also was part of the 4x400 relay team that finished fifth. Elizabethtown finished third overall.

Junior Tyler Dougherty (Central Bucks South) was part of St. Joseph’s 4x100 relay that posted a time of 42.74 in the 4x100 relay and finished fifth at the 2013 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Sunday. Senior Dave Manion (Central Bucks South) was part of the 4x800 relay team that finished sixth, posting a time of 7:38.75.

Shippensburg junior Dan Dreeman (Council Rock South) finished third in the 800 meters at the Ninth Annual Paul Kaiser Classic last Sunday. Dominic Raguz (Central Bucks South) was part of the 4x400 relay team that placed fourth with a time of 3:22.51.

West Chester’s Jay Jabat (Pennsbury) placed fifth in the high jump at the LHU Qualifier, clearing 6-4 ¾.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Ashley Underkofler (Central Bucks South)
was part of Elizabethtown’s 4x800 meter relay team that placed third at the Middle Atlantic Conference Outdoor Championship, posting a time of 9:36.61. Their time is the second fastest recorded time in program history.

St. Joseph’s University sophomore Kayla Charles (North Penn) finished ninth in the preliminaries of the 100 meter hurdles at Saturday’s 2013 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track and Field Championships, posting a PR time of 14.47. Although she missed qualifying for the finals by .03 seconds, she broke the school record of 14.50 set in 2010. She was 13th in the preliminaries of the 400 hurdles with a time of 14.47. Teammate Emily Chappell (Central Bucks South) finished 21st in the 10,000m with a time of 38:43.26.

Shippensburg senior Caitlin Stuetz (Cheltenham) won the 100 and 400-meter hurdle competition with season PRs and NCAA provisional qualifiers at the Ninth Annual Paul Kaiser Classic last Saturday. Stuetz won the 100 in 14.33 and aced the 400 in 1:02.13 – increasing her PSAC lead in both events. A national qualifier last season in the 400 hurdles, Stuetz currently ranks 21st in the NCAA rankings. Junior Monique Clemons (Wissahickon) finished fifth in the 400 meters with a time of 58.53. Stuetz and Clemons were part of the first place 4x400 relay team that posted a time of 3:52.49. At the Jim Thorpe Open on Friday, Clemons achieved new season PRs in multiple events. She completed the 200 meters in 25.64 seconds, finishing fourth. She ran the 100 meters for the first time, crossing the line in 12.71 seconds and finishing seventh. She was part of the 4x100 seconds place relay team that posted a time of 47.65. Stuetz finished second in the 100 hurdles (15.12) and 400 hurdles (1:02.29).
