BASEBALL
Freshman Matt Hollenbeck (Hatboro-Horsham) threw three solid scoreless innings in relief in Georgetown’s 5-3 loss to Seton Hall on Friday, allowing no runs on three hits.
Bloomsburg’s Keith Meyer (Council Rock South) was named to the second team All-PSAC East team as designated hitter. It is his second consecutive all-conference honor. Meyer is Bloomsburg’s first designated hitter to receive All-PSAC East recognition since 2003. For the season, he posted career best numbers in batting average (.324), runs (39), hits (45), doubles (7), triples (3), home runs (1), RBIs (23), total bases (61), slugging percentage (.439), hit-by-pitch (14), on-base percentage (.449) and stolen bases.
Sophomore Greg Welsh (Council Rock South) threw a scoreless inning in Penn State’s 8-2 loss to Minnesota on Sunday. In Friday’s 4-3 win in 10 innings over Minnesota, Welsh threw 1.1 shutout innings in relief.
La Salle’s Adam Kammler (Pennridge) was named to the CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District II First Team. Kammler has started 29 games behind the plate and is batting .255 with a home run and 14 RBIs. He is 17th in the nation in hit by pitches with 15 and sports a .435 on-base percentage. The Pennridge alum’s biggest hit of the season came in the 12th inning at Fordham when his solo home run broke a 1-1 tie to give La Salle the victory. An integrated science, business and technology major, the senior has a 3.52 GPA.
Senior Jon Gyles (Central Bucks West) delivered a two-out RBI single in La Salle’s 4-3 loss to Xavier on Sunday. Senior Kevin Christy (North Penn) threw eight innings, allowing four earned runs and striking out six. He moved within five strikeouts of setting the new school record. The right hander boasts an ERA of 2.76 that ranks among the Atlantic 10’s leaders. In Saturday’s 3-1 win over Xavier, freshman Mike McLeod (Harry S Truman) threw 1.1 innings of scoreless relief. Gyles doubled and scored. In Friday’s 5-1 loss to Xavier, Kammler had a pair of hits.
IUP junior Robbie Zinsmeister (North Penn) was named to the All-PSAC first team. The junior shortstop started all 49 games and hit .326 while setting career highs with six triples, nine home runs and 39 RBIs. He led the team with a .617 slugging percentage from his leadoff spot, and he led the PSAC and was 15th in the nation with 57 runs scored. He was second in the conference with 25 stolen bases and led the team with 57 hits. Zinsmeister had 17 multi-hit games during the year and had a nine-game hitting streak in which he batted .471 with a .794 slugging percentage, driving in 11 runs. Zinsmeister also earned a spot on the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District first team for NCAA Division II. The junior math education major boasts a 3.80 cumulative GPA. The 2012 Capital One All-Academic Teams recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. First team all-district honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot.
Leftfielder Ken McCormick (Pennsbury) had one of his team’s four hits in Philadelphia University’s 9-3 loss to Wilmington (Del.) in the Rams’ season finale on Wednesday. In Monday’s 16-3 loss to No. 17 West Chester on Monday, McCormick had one of the Rams’ five hits.
Freshman David Pine (Council Rock North) was 2-for-3 in Millersville’s 6-2 win over California (Pa.) in Thursday’s PSAC Tournament elimination game. In Wednesday’s 5-1 loss to Mercyhurst in an opening round game, Chris Edgar (North Penn) was 2-for-4.
Messiah senior Ryan Brown (Souderton) received his second straight selection as First Team All-Commonwealth Conference catcher. Brown hit at a .333 clip with a team-best .485 on-base percentage and .605 slugging percentage, leading to a 1.100 OPS that was surpassed by just one other hitter in the Commonwealth Conference. His seven home runs led the entire conference, and Brown drove in 29 runs while scoring a team-high 33. He also led the Falcons and the conference with 25 walks, and his 14 hit-by-pitches tied a single season school record. Brown also was exceptional defensively behind the plate, and his strong arm and ability to handle the pitching staff made him an asset to the Falcons.
Brown was 2-for-5 with a double, three RBIs and two runs score in Messiah’s 11-5 win over Elizabethtown on Friday in the second round of the Commonwealth Conference playoffs, propelling Messiah to a second straight league championship game. Messiah defeated top-seeded Alvernia 2-1 on Saturday to capture the league title. Brown turned a strikeout into a double play in the second inning, gunning down a runner attempting to steal. In Thursday’s opening round 4-1 win over Alvernia, Brown collected three hits and also drew a walk.
Freshman second baseman Billy Fleming (Council Rock South) led West Virginia to a 4-3 upset of No. 18 Louisville in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday. West Virginia entered the final inning down 3-1 but rallied for the win with Fleming delivering an RBI double to drive in the game-winning run.
Eric Ruth (North Penn) retired 11 of the first 12 batters he faced in Winthrop’s 6-2 loss to Charleston Southern on Saturday. He threw six scoreless innings, allowing six hits, no walks and eight strikeouts, and left the game with Winthrop on top 2-0. Charleston came back to win the game with a four-run eighth inning.
Mike Bradstreet (North Penn) worked a one-two-three ninth to earn his 10th save of the season in Rhode Island’s 6-4 win over Fordham on Saturday. He is now tied for second all-time at Rhode Island with 13 career saves.
Dan Hinchcliff (North Penn) singled home a run off All-American Brendan Close of Moravian in the second inning of Sunday’s Landmark Conference Tournament to give Catholic University an early 1-0 lead, but top-seeded Moravian came back to earn a 6-2 win. The freshman infielder started 28 games and finished his rookie season hitting .273 (21-for-77) with 15 RBIs. Catholic University closed the 2012 season with a record of 24-17. It marks the fifth straight year with at least 20 wins for the Cardinals. For Moravian, Matt Hanson (Central Bucks West) was 1-for-3.
In Moravian’s 5-4 loss in 11 innings to Drew on Saturday, Dan Seitzinger (Central Bucks West) was 2-for-5 with a run scored while Hanson contributed a hit and scored a run.
Drew Frankenfield (Wissahickon) contributed a hit and RBI in York College’s 7-5 win over Randolph-Macon in eight innings on Saturday. In York’s 15-2 win over Gettysburg on Tuesday, Frankenfield contributed a double.
Tim Filer (Council Rock North) contributed an RBI double in Lebanon Valley’s 5-4 loss to Elizabethtown in the opening game of the 2012 Commonwealth Conference Championship Tournament.
Matt Albaugh (North Penn) contributed a hit and RBI and scored a run in Kutztown’s 8-1 victory over Mercyhurst in the semifinals of the PSAC Championships on Saturday. In Friday’s 4-0 loss to Mercyhurst, Albaugh had one hit.
Gwynedd-Mercy sophomore John Burns (Neshaminy) was named to the first team All-CSAC squad. Burns drove in 29 runs while batting .344 with 11 doubles, a triple and three home runs. He has a .525 slugging average and a .458 on-base percentage. Behind the plate, he boasts a .980 fielding percentage and has thrown out eight potential base stealers.
Gwynedd-Mercy senior John Barrington (Harry S Truman) was selected to the CSAC All-Sportsmanship Team.
Burns delivered a two-run home run in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 5-2 win over Marywood in a CSAC Tournament elimination game on Saturday. The Griffins saw their season end when they suffered a 9-6 loss to Neumann. The loss marked the end of the careers of Barrington and Tom Mackey (Pennsbury).
Ryan Pater (Central Bucks East) drove in St. Joseph’s only run with a double in the fifth inning of Sunday’s 2-1 loss to George Washington on Sunday. In Saturday’s 4-0 win over George Washington, Pater was 2-for-4 with a run scored and RBI. In Friday’s 5-4 win over George Washington, Pater had three hits, including a double.
Freshman Craig Lepre (North Penn) caught both games of Albany's doubleheader sweep of Maine (9-5, 12-2), and he collected a hit in both games.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Penn State Abington senior Josh Howard (Bensalem) received the Wes Olsen Memorial Scholar Athlete Award. This award was established in 1980 by the former athletic director, Wes Olsen, to honor one male and one female athlete who participated in the current school year and has the highest cumulative GPA after completion of two semesters.
FIELD HOCKEY
Drexel junior Amanda Fleischut (Central Bucks West) was recognized by the National Strength and Conditioning Association with its annual All-American Strength and Conditioning Athlete of the Year award in field hockey. The junior midfielder led the team in goals with nine and 21 points this past season. She finished fourth in the Colonial Athletic Association in shots per game, tied for fifth in shots, sixth in goals per game, tied for sixth in goals and ninth in points per game. The junior standout also received first team honors by the Colonial Athletic Association and the Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-Region Team. “Amanda is a true testament to her team inside and outside of the weight room,” said Drexel assistant strength coach John Sheffield. “She gives 100 percent every time she trains. Her extra effort and dedication to improving has not only helped her tremendously but resulted in her selection to the NFHCA Division I All-Region Second Team.” The NSCA awarded 225 collegiate and high school athletes across 90 schools with this award.
MEN’S LACROSSE
Messiah junior Heath Kupecky (Upper Merion) earned the team’s lone First Team All-Commonwealth honors. Kupecky, who earned Second Team All-MAC honors at attack last season, made the switch to midfield early in the 2012 season. The junior finished the season with 25 goals and 11 assists, only slightly down from his 46 points in 2011. Kupecky’s 25 goals were second on the team. Kupecky’s first team selection is even more impressive considering an ankle injury suffered in a 9-8 loss to Gettysburg on Feb. 25 could have ended his season. Kupecky opted to play through the pain and instability, foregoing surgery until season’s end.
Sophomore attack Kevin Sonderschafer (Central Bucks South) contributed a goal in Chestnut Hill’s 9-6 win over CW Post on Saturday.
Junior Johnny Casey (Abington) had three goals and an assist during a decisive second quarter that helped propel Widener to a 17-7 win over Lycoming in the Commonwealth Conference semifinals on Tuesday. Casey finished the game with five goals, one short of his season high. In Thursday’s 7-5 win over Albright, Casey contributed a goal. In Saturday’s 12-11 overtime loss to Eastern in the conference championship, Casey contributed a pair of goals.
Casey was tabbed to receive first team All-Commonwealth Conference honors for a second straight year. Casey, the 2009 Middle Atlantic Conference Rookie of the Year, is tied for seventh in the league with 28 goals, tied for fourth with five man-up goals, fourth on the team with 11 assists and third with 39 points.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Senior Lauren Greco (Council Rock South) recorded the hat trick in top-seeded Holy Family’s 15-10 win over No. 4 Wilmington University in the semifinals of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference on Saturday. She also had two ground balls and a caused turnover. Caitlin Carrezola (Neshaminy) also contributed a goal. On Sunday, Holy Family defeated Georgian Court 15-10 to capture the CACC title for the first time in program history while also earning a berth in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. Greco, Carrezola and Kimber Kisselback (Neshaminy) all saw action in Sunday’s title game.
Kendall Rood (Central Bucks East) scored a pair of goals in Eastern University’s 15-8 win over King’s College on Wednesday to earn a spot in the Freedom Conference championship game.
Senior Jenna D’Arcy (Hatboro-Horsham) and sophomore Amy Powell (Plymouth Whitemarsh) both scored two goals in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 16-13 loss to Cabrini on Thursday in the semifinals of the CSAC Tournament.
Stephanie Bianco (Upper Merion) posted three draw controls in IUP’s 19-11 loss to Mercyhurst in the quarterfinals of the 2012 PSAC Women’s Lacrosse Tournament on Tuesday. Bianco was part of the best senior class to ever go through IUP. That group won 36 games during their time at IUP, the most ever for the program in a four-year span.
Ashley Bossert (Wissahickon) contributed two goals and one assist in Bloomsburg’s 15-9 win over Mercyhurst in Saturday’s title game of the 2012 PSAC Lacrosse Championship. In the Huskies’ 15-11 win over West Chester, Ashley Bossert had one goal and one assist. In Tuesday’s 20-13 win over No. 12 Gannon University in the PSAC quarterfinals, Ashley Bossert had a pair of goals while Aubrey Bossert (Wissahickon) added one goal.
Aubrey Bossert has been named the recipient of the PSAC Champion Scholar Award at the women’s lacrosse championship. The PSAC Champion Scholar Awards are modeled after the NCAA’s Elite 88 award and honors the student-athlete with the top GPA who is competing at the site of each of the PSAC’s 23 team championship finals. Bossert has compiled a 3.943 cumulative GPA while majoring in exercise science. She has accumulated 54 credit hours.
Senior Rachel Dirksen (Abington) scored two goals and contributed three assists in Messiah College’s 19-5 win over Alvernia on Wednesday in a semifinal game of the Commonwealth Championships. In Saturday’s title game, Messiah was upset by Elizabethtown 12-7. Dirksen contributed two goals and one assist. Messiah was ranked number one in the Commonwealth Championships and #7 in the most recent IWLCA Top 20 poll.
Dirksen was named Commonwealth Player of the Week for the week ending April 30. Dirksen became the Falcons’ all-time leader in both assists (101) and draw controls (226). The week was also notable for Dirksen as she was named the MAC Scholar Athlete of the Year for women’s lacrosse.
Dirksen received All-Commonwealth first team honors for the fourth time in four years. She is the most accomplished player in program history. This season she became Messiah’s all-time leader in career goals scored, assists, ground balls and draw controls. Through 16 games played, Dirksen has collected a Messiah single-season record 68 goals, 29 assists, 37 ground balls, and 60 draw controls. She scored a hat trick in every game except Wednesday’s win over Alvernia. Her shots-on-goal percentage is an outstanding .822. Last week, Dirksen was named the MAC Scholar Athlete of the Year for women’s lacrosse.
Messiah senior Rachel Coyle (Souderton) was named to the first team All-Commonwealth squad for the third consecutive season for her play in the Falcons’ midfield and defense. She collected a team-high 49 ground balls while earning 48 draw controls. Her team-high 34 caused turnovers was good for 2.38 per game – good for 13th in the nation.
Melinda Wojt (Souderton) had four caused turnovers and two ground balls in No. 10 Lock Haven’s 10-9 loss to Mercyhurst in Friday’s PSAC semifinal contest.
SOFTBALL
Holy Family junior Deanna Myers (William Tennent) was named to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Softball Championship All-Tournament team as announced at the conclusion of this year’s championship last Saturday. In three games, Myers batted .400 (4-for-10) after collecting four hits, including a two-run home run against Dominican College on day one. Myers recorded a hit in each game, including two multi-hit games in this year’s championship. She also drove in five runs and scored another. This season Myers batted .259 to go along with 29 hits, 15 runs and 16 RBI. She also hit five home runs to move into second place all-time in program history with 19 career homers. Holy Family (21-26, 13-13 CACC) earned the eighth seed in this year's CACC Tournament.
West Chester junior Devon Utterback (Central Bucks South) was a first team All-PSAC selection. The junior hurler authored a 14-13 mark with a team low 2.33 ERA. She made 28 starts and completed 18 of those contests while tossing a staff high 162 innings. She struck out 80 batters on the year.
Kutztown senior Heather Hannum (Hatboro-Horsham) was named to the 2012 All-PSAC squad. It is the first time the senior first baseman has received this honor. Hannum is hitting .321 and has played and started in all 49 games this season. She has 45 hits, 36 runs and 31 RBIs. She is third on the team in homers (six). Additionally, Hannum has a fielding percentage of .998.
Hannum was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI in Kutztown’s 5-2 win over 2012 PSAC champion IUP in Sunday’s NCAA Atlantic Regional 1 Site Championship game. In Saturday’s 3-0 win over West Virginia University, Hannum had a hit and an RBI. In Friday’s 1-0 win over No. 8 Winston-Salem State University in game two of the NCAA Atlantic Regional Tournament, Hannum recorded a pair of hits.
Amanda Sadowl (Hatboro-Horsham) tossed the first 6.1 innings of Mount St. Mary’s 5-4 loss to LIU Brooklyn on Saturday. Sadowl ends her career third in games pitched (98), sixth in wins (24), sixth in innings pitched (439.2) and ninth in strikeouts (181).
Temple senior Samantha Schoell (North Penn) was named to the Capital One Academic All-District II University Division First Team. It is the second straight selection for Schoell. The squad honors the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performance on the field and in the classroom. Schoell, who boasts a 3.97 GPA in mechanical engineering, has played in and started 43 games for Temple this season. The outfielder has proven her versatility this year, spending time at third base to fill in for injured players. Batting from the second spot all year, Schoell leads the team and the Atlantic 10 and ranks third nationally with her per game average with 19 sacrifice hits. That total is good for fifth on the Temple single-season list and gives her 41 sacrifices in her career, the seventh most all-time at TU. The North Penn alum sports the top GPA among Temple student-athletes and earned her third straight appearance on Temple’s ‘Trustee Ten’ list, given to the top 10 student-athletes at Temple based on GPA. She is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, the University’s Dean’s list and the Atlantic 10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
East Stroudsburg senior Rachel Gieringer (Hatboro-Horsham) was named PSAC East Softball Player of the Year. Gieringer, who was named the PSAC East Freshman of the Year in 2009, hit .355 with seven doubles, five home runs and 25 RBIs. She was named to the All-PSAC East team as designated player and was second team All-PSAC East at third base as a sophomore. Gieringer is the first ESU player to earn this honor since 1996. In 16 PSAC East games this season, Gieringer hit .321 with two doubles, a home run, 10 RBIs and seven runs scored. She was named PSAC East Player of the Week on April 2, which included a 3-for-7 doubleheader with an RBI double in a split with West Chester. Gieringer hit over .300 in all four of her seasons at ESU, batting .303 as a freshman, .348 as a sophomore, .344 as a junior and .355 as a senior. She finishes her career ranked ninth at ESU in batting average (.339), ninth in on-base percentage (.395) and sixth in slugging percentage (.505). She is second in school history with 17 home runs and 85 RBIs, fifth with 161 hits and 240 total bases and tied for sixth with 44 extra-base hits. She is also eighth with 76 runs scored. A member of two PSAC Tournament teams, Gieringer led ESU with 24 RBI as a freshman and had seven doubles, four home runs, 16 RBIs and 23 runs to earn her All-PSAC second team selection as a sophomore. Last season, she had career-highs in on-base percentage (.411) and slugging percentage (.563) and had six doubles, five home runs and 20 RBI in 30 games.
Junior Deanna Dungee (North Penn) handed Messiah its first loss to a conference team this season in Alvernia’s 7-2 win on Saturday as she threw a complete game seven-hitter to advance Alvernia into the ‘if necessary’ championship game, winner take all. Third-seeded Alvernia went on to defeat Messiah 5-0 in the title game to earn its first ever Commonwealth Conference crown while also earning an automatic berth to the NCAA Regional Tournament.
Penn State Abington freshman pitcher/second baseman Melissa Kulp (Upper Merion) was named to the North Eastern Athletic Conference Softball South Division All-Conference Team. Kulp has seen action both on the mound and at second base, and she led the team with a .394 average with 41 hits, 32 runs, five doubles, two triples, four stolen bases, 19 walks and 19 RBIs. Kulp pitched 39.2 innings, striking out 10.
Lebanon Valley senior Kristen Palmerio (Norristown) was named Commonwealth Conference Pitcher of the Year and also earned first team All-Commonwealth recognition. The senior righty has been the team’s ace on the mound. She leads the Commonwealth in wins (17), strikeouts (117), innings pitched (185.1) and starts (25). She holds a 1.74 ERA with opposing batters hitting just .211 off of her. Palmerio has helped her own cause in many games by hitting .369 with 41 hits, including a team-high nine doubles. She was named pitcher of the week twice. Palmerio also was named to the CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District First Team for her outstanding play and academic achievement in 2012. Palmerio will graduate this month with a degree in elementary education. To be considered for nomination, student-athletes must be a sophomore or above in academic standing with a minimum of 3.3 GPA and clear demonstration of athletic excellence.
Mary Ward (North Penn) was 2-for-4 with a double, one run and two RBIs in IUP’s 10-9 win over Bloomsburg in last Sunday’s PSAC Softball Championship game.
Katelyn Donald (North Penn) was 1-for-3 with a run scored and RBI in Eastern University’s 16-4 win over Manhattanville in game one of the Freedom Conference Championships on Friday. Jaime Schwartz (Souderton) scored two runs and contributed an RBI.
Gwynedd-Mercy junior Tegan Wendell (Abington) earned All-CSAC honorable mention recognition. Wendell, who missed a chunk of the middle of the season due to injury, earned her second consecutive honorable mention as she rebounded to lead the team in batting (.461), extra base hits (16), doubles (11), slugging (.737) and on-base percentage (.488). She struck out just four times in 76 at-bats. She also added 22 runs and 22 RBIs. Wendell had her best game of the season in game two with Cedar Crest as she went 5-for-6 with five RBIs and three triples on April 14.
Gwynedd-Mercy sophomore Stephanie Farrar (North Penn) earned All-CSAC honorable mention recognition after a first team pick last season. This year, she again led the team in RBIs (32), triples (6) and home runs (5) and tied for the team lead in walks (11). Twenty-eight of those RBIs came in 22 conference games. Overall, she had nine multiple-hit games and eight multi-RBI games. In two games against Notre Dame on April 13, she totaled eight RBIs on seven hits with six runs in a doubleheader sweep. Nicole Paleolugas (Bensalem) was named to the CSAC All-Sportsmanship Team.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Elizabethtown’s Chris Niles (Central Bucks South) set a new personal record in his heat of the 400m to secure a spot in the finals of the 2012 MAC Outdoor Championships on Friday, cutting three-tenths of a second off his 2011 MAC Outdoor Championship time of 50.46 by running a 50.17 to advance. Niles bumped up one spot to sixth on EC’s top 10 list. On Saturday, Luke Rotenberger (Quakertown) broke his formal personal record in the 400m hurdles with a new benchmark of 55.28 and moved from fourth to second on the school’s top 10 list. Rotenberger dropped his 2011 MAC Championship time in the event by nearly one full second and improved five places from his sixth-place run last year.
Millersville’s Zach Kohler (Pennridge) finished fourth in the decathlon at the 2012 PSAC Championship on Saturday. The senior finished with 6,227 points in 10 events. The total was a season- and career-best. His best place in an individual event was the pole vault where he tied for third, tallying a 4.05 meter best.
Millersville senior Keith Ogden (Cheltenham) finished third in the 400m hurdles at the 2012 PSAC Championship, posting a final time of 52.74 seconds – the fastest of the season by more than a half second. It was the third All-PSAC award of the senior’s career. Ogden tied for third in the high jump with a leap of 1.90 meters.
Messiah College’s Zach Hoagland (North Penn) finished fifth in the 10,000m run at the 2012 MAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship.
Shippensburg senior Eric Wolfe (Central Bucks South) finished fifth in the 400m with a time of 48.58, which marks his highest individual place at a PSAC meet. He also was part of the 4x400m relay that finished third with a time of 3:14.18. Senior Kyle Raguz (Central Bucks South) finished seventh in the 400m hurdles with a time of 55.05. It is the third straight outdoor meet that Raguz has placed seventh in the 400m hurdles. Dan Dreeman (Council Rock South) finished seventh in the 800m with a time of 1:55.03.
West Chester’s Nick Drozd (Central Bucks South) finished 10th in the 400m hurdles at the 2012 PSAC Outdoor Track Championships, posting a time of 54.99. He also was part of the 4x400 relay team that finished eighth with a time of 3:20.17. Adam Heath (Cheltenham) finished 11th in the triple jump
Lock Haven’s Steve Roberts (Quakertown) was part of the winning 4x400 relay at the 2012 PSAC Championships on Saturday. The team clocked a season-best 3:12.40. It is the 18th best time this year in all of Division II.
Brandon Bennett-Green (Cheltenham) won the 200m at the Jim Thorpe Open at Nittany Lion Track on Friday, posting a time of 21.28.
Paul Reilly (Upper Dublin) and Nick Crits (Wissahickon) were part of La Salle’s 4x800 relay team that finished first in Saturday’s 2012 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships at the University of Massachusetts, posting a time of 1.49. Reilly qualified for the 800m final, posting a time of 1:53.17. Crits finished third in the 1500 with a time of 3:48.14.
East Stroudsburg freshman Brandon Mercer (North Penn) finished fifth in the 100m at the 2012 PSAC Championships, posting a time of 10.83 after breaking the 36-year-old freshman record in 10.74 in the prelims. Sophomore Keith Parker-Washington (Upper Moreland) was sixth in the 200 with a time of 22.00. Both were part of ESU’s 4x100 relay that finished first with a time of 40.98, which was an NCAA provisional qualifying time and the third fastest in school history. Parker-Washington was part of the 4x400 relay that finished fourth and posted a time of 3:15.98, a time that ranks fourth in school history. Parker-Washington also picked up a point in the long jump, placing eighth with a mark of 21-11 ¾.
Johns Hopkins freshman Michael Spadaro (Council Rock South) finished fifth in the triple jump (13.04 meters) at the 2012 Centennial Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships this weekend. He also fininished in fourth place in the decathlon. Spadaro totaled 5,353 points in the 10 events that comprise the decathlon, placing in the top four in six of the 10 events and the top five in seven of the 10. Spadaro also captured fourth place in the pole vault with a vault of 3.66 meters. In the Johns Hopkins/Loyola Invitational, Spadaro finished third in the triple jump.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Elizabethtown freshman Ashley Underkofler (Central Bucks South) posted a time of 2:22.73 to finish third in the 800m at Saturday’s 2012 Middle Atlantic Conference Outdoor Championships. Underkofler also was a member of the 4x800m relay team that finished first in Thursday’s competition, posting a time of 9:22.88 and breaking Elizabethtown’s facility record while winning by almost eight seconds.
Lock Haven’s Laura Histand (Neshaminy) ran a 38:18.21 in her PSAC 10K debut, snagging team points on day one of the 2012 PSAC Championships on Thursday. Vanita Moses (Neshaminy) won the hammer throw and finished third in the shot put on the second day of competition on Friday. Moses won the hammer throw with a mark of 178-1, which sets a PSAC Championship record. The mark also establishes a new LHU school record and is a NCAA provisional mark that ranks as 15th best in all of Division II. Moses came back to take third in the shot put with a three-foot personal best throw of 43-11.75. On Saturday, Moses rounded out a memorable PSAC Championship meet with a fourth place finish in the discus (121).
Messiah sophomore Victoria Hepp (Council Rock North) placed fifth in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 12:50.20 at the MAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship on Friday, placing ahead of her original seed and running a lifetime personal record. Brooke Airey (Neshaminy) was part of the 4x800m relay that took third, posting a time of 9:44.91. Jenny Bender (North Penn) finished fourth in the 10,000m run. The women captured their seventh consecutive MAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship.
IUP’s Ayanna LeBlanc (North Penn) finished second in the shot put at the 2012 PSAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday at Bloomsburg. Her throw of 44-11.75 (13.71 meters) was a season best.
Shippensburg junior Caitlin Stuetz (Cheltenham) broke the 17-year-old school record in the 400m hurdles during a preliminary run at the 2012 PSAC Outdoor Championships. Stuetz had never posted a time faster than 61 seconds in the 400m intermediate hurdles before Friday when she crossed the finish line in 1:00.65 – a PR and NCAA provisional mark that slots her eighth in Division II. The performance breaks the old record of 1:01.20 set in 1994. Also on Friday, Stuetz came close to edging the school record in the 100m high hurdles. Her time of 14.19 seconds was the fastest of four Raiders who qualified for the finals. On Saturday, Stuetz won the 100m hurdles by one-hundredths of one second in 14.08 seconds and successfully doubled by winning the 400-meter hurdles in 1:00.11. Her effort in the 100 hurdles ties the school record set in 2009. Stuetz, who broke the 17-year-old record in the 400 hurdles yesterday, ran five tenths of a second faster on Saturday to improve upon a time that should qualify her for the national championships. It currently ranks seventh in Division II. Stuetz also was part of the second place 4x400 relay team that posted a time of 3:52.14. Teammate Monique Clemons (Wissahickon) finished eighth in the 200m with a time of 25.49. She also was part of the second place 4x100 relay team that posted a time of 47.51.
Penn State’s Brittney Howell (Cheltenham) won the long jump on Friday at the Jim Thorpe Open at Nittany Lion Track with a leap of 19-4 (5.98), which is a PR.
Bloomsburg’s Alexis Rankin (Hatboro-Horsham) finished fifth in the 400m dash, posting a time of 57.98 seconds. On Thursday, Rankin posted the fourth fastest qualifying mark of the day in setting the school record with a mark of 57.48 seconds, breaking the mark of 57.68 set in 1986.
West Chester’s Melanie Ruff (North Penn) finished eighth in the 400m at the 2012 PSAC Track Championships, posting a time of 1:04.80. Kim McManus (Plymouth Whitemarsh) placed 11th in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 11:45.57.
