BASEBALL
Rider University junior Jerry Mulderig (Council Rock South) was drafted in the 28th round by Pittsburgh in Major League Baseball’s First Year Player Draft. Mulderig was a first team All-Metro Atlantic Conference and a First Team All-New Jersey selection this year as a designated hitter, but he was drafted as a pitcher. Mulderig is the third Bronc in the last three years to be drafted. It is the highest draft pick from Rider since Scot Knazek was selected in the 15th round by the Angels in 2006. A member of the MAAC All-Academic team as a Behavioral Neuroscience major, Mulderig led Rider in batting (.328, 63 hits in 54 games), on-base percentage (.417), slugging percentage (.417) and walks (29). He was second in stolen bases (16) and is third on the team in RBIs (31). On the mound, Mulderig appeared in 11 games this year, starting four. He owned a 3-2 record with a 4.12 ERA. Opponents batted .229 against him.
Chestnut Hill senior Joseph Crane (Council Rock South) and his 3.52 undergraduate grade point average and 3.95 graduate GPA were rewarded with third team recognition on the COSIDA Capital One Academic All-America Team. Earlier this spring, Crane was named to the Academic All-District squad. While completing a bachelor’s degree in middle level education and pursuing a master’s degree in psychology, as a three-year member of Chestnut Hill’s baseball program, Crane ranks eighth all time in hits (85) and is tied for sixth all time in RBIs (60). In his senior season, Crane scored 21 runs and contributed 20 RBIs while batting .268 (37-for-138) with 11 walks and 15 stolen bases. He also boasted a 2-0 record and three saves in 12 appearances out of the bullpen (3.18 ERA). In the classroom, Crane has earned past honors on the Chestnut Hill Academic Honor Roll (Fall 2012, Spring 2012, Fall 2011), a 2012 Athletic Directors Association Academic Achiever and a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference 2012 Spring All-Academic Team member.
Frederick Community College freshman Casey Clauss (North Penn) earned first team All-Region and first team All-Conference honors. He finished the season with a .413 batting average. His batting average in conference games was .440.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Jaylen Bond (Plymouth Whitemarsh), who played the last two seasons at the University of Texas, has signed a men’s basketball scholarship agreement to attend Temple University. The Longhorn transfer will sit out the 2013-14 season per NCAA rules and have two years of eligibility remaining starting with the 2014-15 season. The 6-7, 225-pound forward played in 54 games at Texas, starting seven times. He averaged 3.1 points, 4.1 rebounds and 13.8 minutes while shooting 50.7 percent (73-144) from the field. He scored in double figures three times with career highs of 18 points and 12 rebounds in a win over Nicholls State (12/31/11). He followed that game with a 12-point, 8-rebound effort in a 77-65 win over Temple in Austin (12/17/11). At PW, he averaged 19 points, 11.2 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.0 assists. Bond’s 1,608 career points ranks second on PW’s all-time list behind 2005 graduate Thomas Young’s 1,641 points.
MEN’S LACROSSE
Mike Wilus (North Penn) was named the first assistant men’s lacrosse coach for Lynn University in May 2013. Wilus joins the Fighting Knights after a two-year stint at NCAA Division III Gwynedd-Mercy College and will assist head coach Brian Kingsbury in building the lacrosse program at Lynn. During his tenure at GMC, the Griffins posted an 18-12 overall record while going 9-4 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference. Wilus’s squad made strides each season, including a 10 percent increase in production for the man-up unit that ranked top-30 in Division III. In 2012, Laxpower.com named GMC as the fifth most improved team throughout NCAA Division III lacrosse. As a member of the Division I University of Massachusetts men’s lacrosse team from 2007-11, Wilus played in 37 career games. The Minutemen went 32-26 during his career and made the NCAA Tournament in his sophomore season for the first time since 2006. During his time at UMass, he interned with the Athletic Media Relations department in the fall of 2010. After graduating from the University of Massachusetts, he began working at La Salle University as a sales and marketing assistant. Wilus earned his Bachelors of Arts in History from UMass in 2011. He continued his education at La Salle University where he received his master’s in education.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Holy Family University sophomore Caitlin Carrezola (Neshaminy) was named to the 2013 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Spring All-Academic team. In order to be named to the team, recipients must have participated in a CACC Championship sport in the spring season. They must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically, have been a student-athlete for at least two semesters and achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher through the fall semester.
SOFTBALL
Holy Family University senior Lindsey Iden (Council Rock South) and sophomore Kelsi Bunda (Pennsbury) were named to the 2013 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Spring All-Academic team. In order to be named to the team, recipients must have participated in a CACC Championship sport in the spring season. They must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically, have been a student-athlete for at least two semesters and achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher through the fall semester.
West Chester University’s softball squad continues to make history as the Golden Rams concluded their record-breaking campaign ranked 17th in the nation in the final National Fastpitch Coaches’ Association poll released recently. West Chester (37-21) set the school record for wins in a single season this spring and reached the ‘Sweet Sixteen’ of the NCAA Division II Tournament before falling to Kutztown in the best-of-three series in the NCAA Super Regional. SOL alums who are members of the team are Megan Kelly (Hatboro-Horsham), Melissa Spinosa (Hatboro-Horsham), Devon Utterback (Central Bucks South), Ali Vavala (Central Bucks East), Laura Altenburger (Neshaminy), Erin Quense (Neshaminy), Jessica Schuck (Council Rock South), Kim Begley (Abington) and Shauna Byrnes (Norristown).
