MEN’S BASKETBALL
Temple senior forward Lavoy Allen (Pennsbury) was added to the USA Men’s National Team that trained against the 2010 USA Men’s World Championship Team finalists during training in New York City. Allen replaced forward Howard Thompkins (University of Georgia) who withdrew because of a minor left foot injury. The 2010 USA Basketball Select squad was guided by Villanova head coach Jay Wright. The Select Team members gathered in New York on Aug. 9 and trained against the USA World Championship finalists Aug. 10-13. Allen, a first team all-Atlantic 10 Conference and USBWA All-District performer, became the first Temple player to average a double-double since Ollie Johnson accomplished the feat in 1970-71, averaging 11.5 points and 10.7 rebounds per game as a junior in 2009-10. The Pennsbury alum led the team in rebounding, blocks (50) and field goal percentage (.536) while ranking third with 83 assists. Allen shared team MVP honors with Ryan Brooks and helped lead the Owls to a 29-6 record and a third straight A-10 championship.
MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Senior Sean Stetler (Central Bucks South) is expected to make a strong impact on a Shippensburg squad that was voted first in the 2010 PSAC preseason coaches’ poll. SU earned 10 of the 15 first-place votes and was also voted atop the USTFCCA Atlantic Region preseason coaches’ poll. Stetler was the No. 2 runner at the Paul Short Invitational and finished 16th at the regional meet. During the track season, Stetler won the indoor 3K and dominated the outdoor 10K with an impressive PR of 30:40. Junior Kris Kroeger (Harry S. Truman) will also be looking to make an impact.
Redshirt freshman Seth Hibbs (Hatboro-Horsham) will return to help anchor a Millersville squad that was tied for seventh in the PSAC preseason poll. Hibbs was an all-state cross country athlete at Hatboro, but a shoulder injury prevented him from competing last season. After sitting out the cross country season, he emerged during the indoor track season, posting the team’s best time in the mile (4:24.97). At the PSAC Outdoor Championships, Hibbs placed 12th in the 1500-meter run.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Sophomore Lauren Bond (North Penn), who is returning from an injury, is projected to be among Bloomsburg’s top runners this season. Freshman Martina Drew (Neshaminy) is expected to make an immediate contribution to the team. Bloomsburg is ranked sixth in the PSAC preseason coaches’ poll.
Kate Rhue (North Penn) and Michelle Blum (Central Bucks East) are part of a group of young runners looking to make an impact for a Millersville squad picked fifth in the PSAC preseason coaches’ poll. Both competed as freshmen, and Rhue ran at the NCAA regional.
FIELD HOCKEY
Senior forward Brittany Kocis (Central Bucks East) had six goals and four assists last season for an East Stroudsburg squad that this season is tabbed second in the PSAC East Preseason Poll and is ranked No. 5 in the NFHCA Division II Poll.
Bloomsburg senior Madison Schoch (Quakertown) will lead a defensive unit that allowed only 19 goals in 23 games last season. For the fourth consecutive season, the Huskies are ranked number one in the 2010 Kookaburr/NFHCA (National Field Hockey Coaches Association) Division II preseason coaches’ poll. Bloomsburg is also picked as the top team of the PSAC Eastern Division. Bloomsburg, winners of the last four NCAA D-II national championships, swept all five first place votes.

University of Maryland senior Katie O’Donnell (Wissahickon) converted a penalty stroke 30 seconds into Sunday’s game at Villanova. The Terps, ranked second nationally, went on to earn a 5-0 win. O’Donnell also contributed an assist. Sophomore Moriah Allen (Neshaminy) was in the starting lineup for the Wildcats while freshman Jenna Allen (Pennsbury) and Sam Haas (Central Bucks South) came off the bench. Villanova goalie Megan Goelz (Pennsbury) turned away 12 shots.
O’Donnell contributed a goal and two assists in Maryland’s 4-2 win over 11th-ranked Drexel on Friday. Amanda Fleischut (Central Bucks West) started for Drexel, which received a four-save effort from goalie Jenna Phillips (Hatboro-Horsham).

Junior Jessica Longstreth (Council Rock North) contributed a career-high three assists in 18th-ranked Penn State’s 4-0 win over 16th-ranked Old Dominion on Friday. Her performance tied a school record for the most ever at the Penn State Field Hockey Complex. Sisters Jenny and Lauren Purvis (Hatboro-Horsham) both started in the midfield for the Nittany Lions. Casey McCartin (Hatboro-Horsham) saw action off the bench. On Sunday, Penn State fell to third-ranked Virginia 3-0.
Junior Nicole Nelson (Souderton) is a starting midfielder for eighth-ranked Syracuse, which downed Northwestern 6-1 in its opener and defeated Northeastern 4-1 on Sunday.
FOOTBALL
Matt Freed (Souderton) earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American honors for the 2009-10 academic year. He also was one of 52 student-athletes from East Stroudsburg who received Academic Achievement Awards from the Division II Athletic Directors Association. Student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 through at least four semesters of college work.
Freed has been named a first team preseason Division II All-American by Consensus Draft Services entering his senior season. He will anchor an ESU squad that returns the nucleus of last year’s team that made its fourth trip to the NCAA Division II Playoffs in school history. Freed has earned back-to-back AP Little All-America and Daktronics Division II All-America honors. The outside linebacker led the PSAC with 132 tackles, 18 tackles for a loss and 10 sacks a year ago. He is one of seven returning starters on the Warriors’ defense. Redshirt senior Matt Brown (Souderton) returns for his sixth season at tight end after receiving a medical redshirt in 2008. He played in parts of four seasons, including 12 games last year. Junior inside linebacker Mike Bergey (Souderton) is one of five players with starting experience in a linebacking group that is projected to be among the best at their position in the region. Redshirt junior Dennis Lynch (Pennsbury) also is expected to be a potential contributor at linebacker. Redshirt junior Shawnte Carroll (Harry S. Truman) is a returning starter at cornerback.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
East Stroudsburg’s Molly McLenigan (Plymouth Whitemarsh) received an Academic Achievement Award from the Division II Athletic Directors Association. Student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 through at least four semesters of college work. She also was one of 156 East Stroudsburg student-athletes on the PSAC Scholar-Athlete list for the 2009-10 academic year. To be eligible, student-athletes must attain at least a 3.25 cumulative GPA. Teammate Lauren Hummell (North Penn) also earned PSAC Scholar-Athlete honors.
MEN’S SOCCER
Colin Koch (Pennridge) is one of two seniors who started all 17 contests last year for Widener. He will anchor a defense that saw Widener deal eight shutouts and allow just 21 goals last season. Widener is picked to finished sixth in the Commonwealth Conference in the preseason poll.
Freshman Ross Garabedian (Hatboro-Horsham), a defenseman,is one of three 2010 recruits that figures prominently into the plans for a Chestnut Hill squad that hopes to establish itself as a contender in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. Calvin Young (William Tennent) will factor into the goalkeeping ranks.
Several SOL alums will play key roles for a Bloomsburg squad that has been ranked seventh in the PSAC preseason coaches’ poll. Senior Tim Pfender (Neshaminy) returns to help lead the Huskies defensive backfield while sophomore Alex Ruhfass (Council Rock North) and Tom Natter (Abington) will see significant time for the Huskies as well.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Sophomore goalie Gabby Pakhtigian (North Penn) earned her sixth career win in nine starts in goal for LaSalle in the Explorers 3-2 win over Vermont in the final game of the TD Bank Classic on Sunday afternoon in Burlington, Vt. In LaSalle’s season opener last Sunday, Pakhtigian earned the shutout in the Explorers’ 5-0 win over Canisius.
Junior midfielder Devon Miniscalco (Council Rock South) scored 12 goals and was a Daktronics All-Region selection last year for an East Stroudsburg squad that is looking for its fourth straight trip to the PSAC Tournament. ESU is tied with Bloomsburg for the eighth spot in the preseason poll, which includes all 15 women’s soccer programs as the PSAC returns to a single-division format in 2010. The top eight schools will qualify for the PSAC tournament at the conclusion of the 14-game scheduled. Miniscalso, Kelsey Dale (Hatboro-Horsham) and Ashley McKenna were also named to the PSAC Scholar-Athlete list for the 2009-10 academic year. To be eligible, student-athletes must attain at least a 3.25 cumulative GPA.

SOFTBALL
East Stroudsburg’s Rachel Gieringer (Hatboro-Horsham) received an Academic Achievement Award from the Division II Athletic Directors Association. Student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 through at least four semesters of college work while competing in an intercollegiate sport. She and teammate Angela Huggins (Neshaminy) were also included on the PSAC Scholar-Athlete list for the 2009-10 academic year. To be eligible, student-athletes must attain at least a 3.25 cumulative GPA.
Mount St. Mary's junior Beth Everist (North Penn) and sophomore Amanda Sadowl (Hatboro-Horsham) were named to the Northeast Conference (NEC) Academic Honor Roll. A student-athlete must maintain a cumulative GPA or 3.20 or better to earn a spot on the honor roll. Everist is an English major, and Sadowl is majoring in biology.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Lock Haven’s Brandon Pomerantz (Council Rock North) earned U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic status following the 2010 season. To qualify for the All-Academic squad, the student-athlete must have a compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.30 and have met either the NCAA Division II indoor or outdoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard. Pomerantz was a provisional qualifier on the Distance Medley Relay squad which brought home a dramatic victory at the prestigious St. Valentine’s Invitational hosted by Boston University.
WRESTLING

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Senior outside hitter Alyson Stark (Council Rock South) is one of five returning starters on an East Stroudsburg squad that is picked in a tie for fifth in the PSAC East Coaches Poll. Stark missed a significant stretch of the 2009 season due to an injury but still earned a spot on the All-PSAC East second team, her second straight all-conference selection. She has led the Warriors in kills per game in each of her first three seasons with 174 total kills and 2.8 per game last season. She is just outside the top 10 in school history in kills, blocks and aces. Stark also recieved an Academic Achievement Award from the Division II Athletic Directors Association. Student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 through at least four semesters of college work while competing in an intercollegiate sport. Stark was one of 156 East Stroudsburg student-athletes on the PSAC Scholar-Athlete list for the 2009-10 academic year. To be eligible, student-athletes must attain at least a 3.25 cumulative GPA.
