MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Sam Brooks (Wissahickon)
posted a time of 29:08.44 in the 8K at Saturday’s Misericordia Cougar Classic as Elizabethtown rolled to the convincing win.

Freshman Alexander Kane (Central Bucks East) captured the individual title to help lead Penn State Abington to a third place finish out of nine teams at the 2012 Penn State Abington Invitational on Saturday morning. Kane finished the 8K course in a time of 29:15.

Ursinus senior Sam Stortz (Upper Dublin) finished 22nd overall and second on the team with a time of 28:23.34 at Saturday’s Cougar Classic at Misericordia. Junior Charles Wacker (Plymouth Whitemarsh) was fourth on the team, posting a time of 29:43.77. Ursinus finished sixth in the team standings.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Ashley Underkoffler (Central Bucks South)
finished 16th with a time of 25:33.61 at Saturday’s Misericorida Cougar Classic, helping to lead her Elizabethtown squad to the commanding victory. Teammate Alyssa Korn (Abington) posted a time of 26:12.98 and finished 22nd.

Temple sophomore Chelsea Carleton (Central Bucks South) crossed the finish line in 21:07 to place seventh overall at the Friend Invitational on Friday afternoon at Belmont Plateau. The Owls finished second in the team standings.

Lock Haven’s Laura Histand (Neshaminy) finished 27th with a time of 25:08 at the Division II Challenge hosted by Kutztown University on Saturday. The Lady Eagles finished sixth as a team.

Cornell freshman Ann Herman (Pennsbury) finished 36th out of 360 runners in the women’s 6K at the University of Rochester Yellowjacket Invitational, posting a time of 23:01.1. Cornell took the first nine places, easily winning the team title.

Lauren Bond (North Penn) crossed the finish line in a time of 25:15 at the Division II Challenge at Kutztown University on Saturday, helping to lead Bloomsburg to a first place finish. Bond finished 30th overall.

Ursinus College’s Gina Brienza (Central Bucks East) finished 39th with a time of 27:50.23 at the Cougar Classic Meet hosted by Misericordia University on Saturday. Ursinus finished fifth in the team standings.

Shippensburg freshman Gabby Brackett (Bensalem) finished 30th at the 2012 Monmouth University Invitational on Saturday morning. The Raiders finished fourth.

Penn State Abington junior Megan O’Farrell (Pennsbury) placed 17th with a time of 28:16 at the 2012 Penn State Abington Invitational on Saturday morning at Lormier Park.

FIELD HOCKEY
Albright junior Alyssa Tourdot (Wissahickon), a transfer from Manhattanville, was the Commonwealth Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 10. Tourdot scored all three game-winning goals in Albright’s three wins the preceding week, including an overtime goal in a come-from-behind 4-3 win at DeSales. The Lions then won the Bryn Mawr College Tournament, taking two games by a total score of 12-1. Averaging over five points a game, Tourdot totaled seven goals and two assists on the week.

Tourdot scored a goal in Albright’s 3-1 win over Scranton on Saturday, and in Thursday’s 3-1 win over Keystone College, Tourdot contributed two goals and an assist.

Goalie Brittany Varacallo (Central Bucks South) stopped three shots in one half of action in IUP’s 5-3 win over ninth-ranked Mansfield last Tuesday. IUP was ranked No. 5 in last week’s Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II Coaches Poll last week.

Senior Marlaine Schneider (Neshaminy) scored the game-winning goal during corner play in Rider’s 3-2 overtime win against La Salle on Saturday. The goal came 6:15 into OT after the Broncos gave up a two-goal lead late in regulation. In Wednesday’s 3-0 win over the University of Pennsylvania, Schneider contributed an assist and also set up the first goal of the game.

La Salle sophomore Colleen Kempf (Central Bucks South) scored the tying goal in Saturday’s 3-2 overtime loss to Rider, slamming home the rebound of a shot by junior Olivia Shoemaker (Souderton) and setting the stage for OT. Earlier, a goal by senior Becca Chylack (Souderton) put the Explorers on the scoreboard after Rider opened up a 2-0 lead. In last Sunday’s 8-3 loss to Columbia, Chylack contributed a goal.

Jennalise Taylor (Pennsbury) scored a goal in Quinnipiac’s 4-2 loss to Lafayette on Sunday. In Friday’s 3-0 win over St. Joseph’s, Taylor scored a goal that gave Quinnipiac a 1-0 lead. In Quinnipiac’s 2-1 win over Vermont, Taylor also scored a goal.

Christina Maida (Central Bucks East) was credited with two saves in one half of action in No. 2 Princeton’s 10-2 win over Delaware on Sunday. The Tigers are 6-0 on the season. In Princeton’s 4-1 win over Dartmouth on Saturday, Maida was credited with one save.

Caitlin Vasey (Central Bucks East) scored and contributed an assist, the 49th of her career, in Lebanon Valley’s 2-1 win over previously undefeated Drew on Thursday.

Villanova freshman Kayla Kenney (Central Bucks South) received a BIG EAST Honor Roll mention last Monday for her performance the preceding week when she accumulated seven points in two games. Kenney had two goals and an assist, including the game winner, in Villanova’s 3-2 win over La Salle. In Villanova’s 2-1 win over St. Francis, Kenney also scored the game winner. She is ranked second (tied) in the BIG EAST with two game-winning goals.

Kenney had a pair of assists in Villanova’s 6-4 loss to Kent State on Saturday.

Drexel’s Amanda Fleischut (Central Bucks West) was named CLEAR Athlete of the Week by Drexel Athletics last Monday. The senior captain tallied two goals and three assists in Drexel’s three-game road trip to the West Coast. Fleischut started the Dragons’ six-goal rally in the opening six minutes of play against UC Davis. She followed with an assist and continued to set the tone on offense in the Dragons’ 6-0 shutout of the Aggies. Fleischut’s first-half goal knotted the score 1-1 against No. 22 California. In the eighth minute of OT, she assisted on the game-winning goal as the Dragons earned a 3-2 win over the Golden Bears. It was the fifth straight win to start the season for Drexel. In the final game of the three-game swing, Fleischut contributed an assist to tie the score with No. 16 Stanford. The Cardinals handed the Dragons their first loss of the season, 2-1.

Gwynedd Mercy junior Maria Karidas (Council Rock South) was named the Colonial States Athletic Conference Field Hockey Player of the Week as she totaled seven points for the Griffins during their 3-0 week. The Council Rock South alum also was selected the ECAC Division III Mid-Atlantic Region Field Hockey Player of the Week. In the team’s 3-2 win over Widener, the junior scored all three of the Griffins’ goals for her second career hat trick. In the Griffins’ 2-1 win over DeSales, she added one assist.

Freshman Katie O’Neill (Council Rock North) scored a goal in Gwynedd Mercy’s 3-1 win over Alvernia on Saturday.

FOOTBALL
Craig Needhammer (North Penn)
rushed for 101 yards, including a back-breaking 61-yard touchdown run in the third quarter of Lycoming’s 21-13 win over Lebanon Valley. Sophomore John Sibel (Pennsbury) had five catches for 40 yards for Lycoming. Lebanon Valley’s Pete Panichi (Upper Merion) was held to 45 yards rushing on 12 carries.

Ryan Dickerson (Souderton) had four catches for 65 yards in Bloomsburg’s 44-37 win over No. 21 Kutztown. Included in those four receptions was a 33-yard catch on the first possession of the second half to set up a two-yard TD that gave Bloomsburg a 30-21 lead. KU quarterback Kevin Morton (Abington) became Kutztown’s all-time leader in passing yardage, setting his second career record this season, but he left the game due to an injury in the second half and did not return. Morton was 16-of-21 for 182 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. The shortened day gave him 9,184 career yards, passing Andy Breault’s record of 9,096 yards. Josh Mastromatto (Upper Dublin) and Alex DiNolfi (Norristown) both sat out the game because of injuries.

Linebacker Mike Culbreath (North Penn) had a team high nine tackles to lead the defense in West Chester’s 46-14 win over Millersville on Saturday night. Shawn Leo (Souderton) is a perfect 14-for-14 on extra points this season, and West Chester’s junior placekicker, who has 85 career PATs, is one away from tying Eric Wengling for fifth on the school’s all-time list. Millersville’s Jamie Thomas (Plymouth Whitemarsh) recovered a fumble while Reggie Slaton (Bensalem) led Millersville’s defense with a half-sack, a tackle for a loss and seven stops.

Junior defensive end Jake Metz (Souderton) set a career high with eight tackles and three sacks in Shippensburg’s 63-21 win over East Stroudsburg on Saturday. Junior defensive back Mike Goode (Norristown) had an interception in the end zone, and teammate Sheldon Mayer (Norristown) came up with a diving touchdown catch that put the Raiders on top 49-14. Junior defensive end Mike Schmidt (Harry S Truman) made his first career start. ESU redshirt sophomore Andrew Coyle (Souderton) blocked an extra point.

Josh Williams (Central Bucks East) hauled in five passes for 65 yards in Ursinus College’s 40-28 loss to Franklin & Marshall on Saturday.

MEN’S GOLF
Temple junior Russell Hartung (Central Bucks East) shot a 77 on Saturday in the first round at The McLaughlin held at Bethpage Red Course, home of the 2002 and 2009 US Open Championships. Temple was tied for 11th out of 16 teams after one round.

Eric Slawter (Upper Merion) shot a 74 for the second day in a row last Monday to post a 148 at the 2012 Hal Hansen Invitational at Clarion Oakes Golf Club to help keep West Chester in the top spot. The Golden Rams shot a 299 in round two to finish with a 585 team score, marking the lowest two-round score since 2010.

WOMEN’S GOLF
Middlebury College sophomore Jordan Glatt (Central Bucks East) shot a 79-81 for 10th place out of 69 golfers at the NYU Invitational.  The tournament took place on Saturday at Pelham Bay Golf Course and on Sunday at Split Rock Golf Club in the Bronx.  The Middlebury team took home second place out of the 13 teams participating.

MEN’S SOCCER
Reserve keeper Erik Riefenstahl (Wissahickon) saw action in the net in the second half of Elizabethtown’s 4-1 win over Wilkes on Saturday.

La Salle rookie Joe Farrell (Wissahickon) scored the game’s first goal in the Explorers’ 2-0 win over Lehigh on Wednesday night.

Freshman Dalton Andrusko (Council Rock North) scored a goal on a corner kick feed in Temple’s 3-2 win over Manhattan in the Owls’ home opener on Tuesday.

Fran Miller (Central Bucks East) and Miguel Diaz (Central Bucks East) set up the game-winning goal by Stephen Pieri (Central Bucks South) in Bloomsburg’s 1-0 win over Shepherd University on Tuesday night. In Friday night’s 4-2 loss to ninth-ranked Gannon, Diaz intercepted a pass and fired a shot into the bottom right corner of the goal to give Bloomsburg an early lead. It was the first goal of Diaz’s career. Miller scored a goal to put the Huskies on top 2-0 only to watch Gannon rally for the win. In Saturday’s 2-1 loss Mercyhurst, junior Anthony Manero (Council Rock North) scored the game’s first goal for the Huskies. Prior to the game, the Huskies honored their seniors, which included John Owens (Central Bucks East) and Alex Ruhfass (Council Rock North).

Christian Benner (Souderton) pushed a pass to on-rushing teammate Tommy Ryan on a restart, and Ryan scored to give West Chester a 2-0 lead on its way to a 3-0 win over Holy Family on Thursday.

Senior forward Matt Howard (Abington) contributed an assist on a goal that propelled Penn State Abington to a 1-0 halftime lead over Wells College on its way to a 3-0 win.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
Sophomore Kimber Kisselback (Neshaminy) contributed an assist in Holy Family’s 2-1 loss to Shippensburg on Monday.

Cara Deola (Council Rock South) scored the only goal of the game in the 85th minute to lift 12th-ranked West Chester to a 1-0 win over 20th-ranked Edinboro on Saturday.

Freshman Taylor Gerstenfield (William Tennent) connected on a one-time shot in Bloomsburg’s 3-0 win over Chestnut Hill on Monday night.

Brianna Hires (Neshaminy) scored a goal in West Chester’s 4-0 win over Mansfield on Friday.

Penn State Abington sophomore Gabrielle Benedict (Central Bucks West) was named the NEAC Women’s Soccer Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week for her efforts in goal. The sophomore keeper helped the Nittany Lions open the year at 3-2 by totaling 22 saves and registering a .759 save percentage while allowing just seven goals (1.40 GAA) with four of those goals coming in a 4-2 setback to Keuka College. Benedict had 11 saves in the loss. She also registered a shutout in the Nittany Lions 1-0 win over Cairn and allowed just one goal in each of the other three contests.

Cindy Wade (Abington) scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season in Penn State Abington’s 2-1 win over the College of St. Elizabeth on Saturday. She also contributed an assist on the eventual game winner. In Friday’s 1-0 loss to Bryn Mawr College, Benedict ended up with nine saves on 10 shots.

Alicia Roberts (Upper Moreland) scored three goals in a four-minute span in Wilkes University’s 5-0 win over Widener on Saturday. The goals were the first of the season for Roberts, and for her performance, the sophomore forward was named Freedom Conference Women's Soccer player of the Week on Monday. "it was a strange four minutes, to be quite honest," said Wilkes head coach John Sumoski. I haven't seen anything like it in the 11 seasons I've been here. She just took over."

Freshman Kaceyanne Cerankowski (Neshaminy) contributed an assist in Elizabethtown’s 1-1 tie with Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday.

Ashley Schoellkopf (Pennridge) recorded two saves in 23:37 minutes in the net in IUP’s 4-0 loss to rival California on Saturday.

Senior forward Ashley McKenna (Central Bucks South) scored a goal in East Stroudsburg’s 3-0 in over Mercyhurst on Friday. The Warriors are 2-0-2 on the young season.

WOMEN’S TENNIS
Lauren Hetzel (Upper Moreland)
was part of Penn State Abington’s second doubles team that earned a win in the Nittany Lions 6-3 loss to Albright College on Friday afternoon.

East Stroudsburg sophomore Allison Bean (Neshaminy) dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision to No. 4-seeded Michelle Perez (Bloomsburg) at the PSAC Individual Championships on Saturday. She also competed in the doubles competition.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Freshman Cassidy Koenig (Upper Merion) contributed a career-high 42 assists in Cabrini’s 3-1 win over Widener on Thursday. The win was the fourth in a row for the Cavaliers, who boast a 6-4 record.

Abbie Keating (Neshaminy) had 20 digs and nine kills in Cairn University’s come-from-behind 3-2 win over Delaware Valley College on Saturday.

Sarah Godfrey (William Tennent) contributed 11 kills and four assist blocks and one block in Lebanon Valley’s 3-2 win over Franklin & Marshall on Saturday at the F&M Scramble Tournament. In Lebanon Valley’s 3-1 loss to Susquehanna later in the day, Godfrey had a team high eight kills. In Thursday’s 3-0 loss to Stevenson, Godfrey had four kills, and in Tuesday’s 3-0 loss to Messiah, Godfrey had seven kills, including five kills on seven attacks in the third set. 

Devon Maugle (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had five kills and four digs in Connecticut’s 3-0 loss to Northeastern on Saturday. In Friday’s 3-0 win over Harvard, Maugle had nine kills and nine digs.

Freshman Geena Close (Quakertown) had three assists in East Stroudsburg’s 3-0 win over Cheyney last Saturday.

Freshman libero Dianna Bianchini (Wissahickon) had 13 digs in Chestnut Hill’s 3-0 loss to Nyack College on Saturday. In Thursday’s 3-0 win over Cheyney, Bianchini served for five straight points to close out the third set. In last Sunday’s 3-1 win over Mercy College, Bianchini anchored the defense with 15 digs.

Junior middle blocker Brittany O’Hara (Pennridge) contributed six kills and four blocks in Moravian’s 3-2 loss to Haverford College on Saturday.
