Fifty-four scholastic teams will compete Saturday in the 10th Annual Katie Samson Lacrosse Festival at Radnor High School, an event created to raise money and spread awareness for spinal cord research and development.
This year’s festival will feature the biggest field ever as 28 girls’ teams and 26 boys’ teams, mostly from the Philadelphia area, compete in the largest single-day high school lacrosse festival in the country.
A crowd of approximately 10,000 is expected for the event, which runs from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. A special feature of the Festival will be three wheelchair events, rugby (11:15 a.m.), tennis (1:15. p.m.) and basketball (3:15 p.m.).
The event has helped raise nearly $1 million for the Katie Samson Foundation in honor of Katie Samson, a Radnor graduate who suffered paralysis from the chest down in a sledding accident 10 years ago while a student-athlete at Middlebury College (CT). The intention of the event also is to celebrate the spirit and example of Samson, who continues to play many sports and competes every year in a wheelchair game at the Festival.
Another special guest Saturday will be the Phillie Phanatic, who will be attending the event from 1-2 p.m. Fans of all ages also can enjoy activities at the two FanZones. The event also will feature youth and local alumni games.
“It has been an amazing 10-year run for the Katie Samson Festival and we’re hoping to reach the $1 million mark in donations this year,” said event coordinator Bill German. “We’ve been able to combine the best in boys’ and girls’ high school lacrosse with fundraising efforts on behalf of spinal cord injury research and care.
“We are very proud of KSF’s accomplishments, our efforts have supported returning vets with spinal cord injuries through Operation First Response; wheelchairs for Iraqi children; adaptive wheelchairs for rugby and basketball athletes at Magee Rehab; plus research projects through The Miami Project, Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation and BrainGate at Brown University. Katie is living proof that with incredible determination and support from friends and family, living a full, rich life as a spinal cord injury patient is possible.”
“This year’s Fest will host 54 teams, 26 boys and 28 girls, the most ever. We expect 10,000 folks to walk through the gates. With two FanZones hosting many food, clothing and lacrosse vendors, we try to make the day more than just about lacrosse, but an opportunity to spend a great family day filled with activities of all types.”
