Coach Jack Knauss never believed that his team was only the third best team in Class AAA, and on Tuesday night, the Golden Bears proved him right.
“The boys played well tonight,” the Golden Bears’ coach said. “I’m very, very pleased with how things turned out.”
Fifteen minutes into Tuesday’s game at War Memorial Stadium, the Golden Bears got on the scoreboard.
“Tyler Foerst made a great effort running up the right side, and someone fouled him,” Knauss said. “We had a direct kick, and Tim DeCarolis took the direct kick and hit a beautiful ball to Minvekah Daramay, who headed the ball in.”
That 1-0 lead held until the Golden Bears were awarded a penalty kick in the second half.
“Tommy Hayes worked feverishly inside the 18, and the only way to stop him was to trip him,” Knauss said.
Daramay was money on the penalty kick, and the Golden Hawks led 2-0.
“We handled ourselves very well,” Knauss said. “There were times when we controlled the ball, and there were times when they controlled the ball, but I thought we were the more dangerous team tonight. We had many more dangerous shots.”
According to Knauss, the win was a team effort.
“Everyone played tremendous, and our defense was stellar,” he said. “We played so well as a team.”
The Golden Bears will face Holy Ghost Prep in Thursday’s title game. The Prep crushed Octorara 6-0 in Tuesday’s other semifinal.
