It wasn’t December of 1963 – but ‘Oh What A Night’ for the Suburban One Continental Conference.

There were five teams that opened the PIAA District One Class AAA playoffs from the SOL Continental Conference. And after the results are in – there are still five SOL Continental Conference teams competing for a district crown.

Central Bucks East, Central Bucks South, North Penn, Pennridge, and Souderton all collected first round victories.

“You have to be an excellent team to win our conference,” said Souderton head coach Tom Quintois. “Every game is so tight, and every game is a good one.

“It’s really a shame that CB West and Hatboro-Horsham didn’t get into the playoffs,” added Quintois. “They are both playoff caliber teams.”

“It says a lot about the quality of our conference,” said Pennridge head coach Pete Valimont. “We play each other hard during the season, but we pull for each other in the playoffs.”

Pennsbury and Council Rock South of the SOL National Conference have second round games, while Wissahickon of the SOL American Conference had a bye into the second round.

First Round PIAA District One Class AAA
Playoff Results

Souderton 0 – Council Rock North 0
Souderton 5 – CR North 3 (PK)

Souderton (#26) out shot Council Rock North (#7) in the penalty kick phase of the game 5-3 to stun the favored Indians. The game was deadlocked at 0-0 during regulation.

“They were the better team,” said Souderton head coach Tom Quintois. “But our sophomore goal keeper, Tyler Afflerbach, played a phenomenal game. We were down a man for 40 minutes with a red card, and he made some great saves. He stopped a penalty kick during regulation, and played great to hold them in the penalty kicks at the end.”

Souderton will now have a road game on Thursday (10/28) as the Indians will face fellow SOL Continental Conference member Central Bucks South (#23). The Titans handled Downingtown West in the district opener – 4-0.

North Penn 3 – Perkiomen Valley 1

North Penn (#15) scored a goal in the first half and added two more in the second half to defeat visiting Perkiomen Valley (#18) – 3-1. The goal scorers for the Knights were Michael McGuire, Chris Davidson, and Curtis Washburn.

“It was a very physical game,” said North Penn head coach Paul Duddy. “I thought that we put on the majority of the pressure, and we played very well in the second half.”

North Penn will be on the road in its second round game on Thursday (10/28) as the Knights will play at Conestoga (#2). The Pioneers had a first round bye.

Central Bucks South 4 – Downingtown West 0

Central Bucks South (#23) upset Downingtown West (#10) in its opening round game – 4-0. Senior Keith Crews scored a pair of first-half goals for the Titans, while senior Colin Buckley and junior Steven Pieri scored second-half goals. Senior Drew Sutliffe registered the shutout for the winners in goal.

“I’m really not too surprised with how well we played,” said Central Bucks South head coach Don Brady. “Both us and Downingtown West are similar teams. I thought we controlled most of the first half and from the middle of the second half on.”

Central Bucks South will host Souderton (#26) in a second round game on Thursday (10/28). The Big Red upset CR North 1-0 on penalty kicks in their first round game.

Pennridge 3 – Downingtown East 2

Pennridge (#13) did not score first – or last – but the Rams scored three goals in the middle to defeat visiting Downingtown East (#20) – 3-2. The goal scorers for the winners were Dan Caya, Cody Zickler, and Jake Stear.

“Once we got the lead in the second half they put some good pressure on us,” said Pennridge head coach Pete Valimont. “But (goalkeeper) Ryan Dailey came up with some big saves, and we were able to hang on. It was a long game.”

Pennridge will travel to Council Rock South (#4) on Thursday night to meet the Golden Hawks - @ CR North. Rock South had a first round bye.

Central Bucks East 4 – Boyertown 0

Central Bucks East (#6) scored 37 seconds into the game on a goal by Mac Farber and cruised to a 4-0 first-round win over Boyertown (#27). Farber scored two goals for the Patriots, while Miguel Diaz and Lee Sandquist scored single goals.

“We are a team that gives up few goals, and that score at the beginning of the game was a big one for us,” said Central Bucks East head coach Mike Gorni. “If we can score a couple of goals, we are a hard team to beat.”

CB East will host West Chester Rustin (#11) this Thursday (10/28) at War Memorial Field. Rustin opened the district playoffs with a 3-1 win over Abington.
Pennsbury 1 – Penncrest 0

Pennsbury (#9) scored a goal in the 28th minute by sophomore Dylan Smith to lift the Falcons to a 1-0 victory over Penncrest (#24).

“We played well, but we have to focus more on finishing our scoring opportunities,” said Pennsbury head coach Tom Stoddart as the Falcons fired 14 shots on goal. “Pat Lestingi handled the goalkeeper’s box well, and Kyle MacDonald also played well.”

Pennsbury will hit the road for its second round game this Thursday (10/28) as the Falcons fly to Unionville (#8). The Indians claimed a 4-1 first round win over Cheltenham.

Marple Newtown 0 – Neshaminy 0
