Phoenixville 44, Upper Merion 40
The Vikings found themselves locked in an 8-8 tie with 2:30 remaining in the first quarter but trailed 19-8 by the end of one quarter. Phoenixville led 28-15 at halftime before the Vikings outscored the Phantoms 8-2 in the third quarter and 26-16 in the second half.
“We gave up an 11-point run to finish the first quarter – it was the first quarter that doomed us,” coach Tom Schurtz said. “We had a bad two minutes and 30 seconds, and that will doom you.
“Girls’ basketball in the area is good. Phoenixville is a good team, and you have to come to play every night.”
Cassidy Koenig played a major role in Upper Merion’s second half surge, scoring 16 of her 19 points after the intermission. Included in her offensive onslaught were five three-point baskets.
“Koenig continues to light it up from afar,” Schurtz said. “I don’t know if there’s a shooter in the area that’s putting up the numbers she is. I have never had a girl shoot like this. She can flat out shoot.”
Kristina O’Sullivan added 10 points and MJ Valeri contributed seven points, four in the fourth quarter.
“We’re young, and we’re going to have games like this,” Schurtz said. “We’re looking to get a little bit better every game. The positive is we played well tonight for three quarters.”
The Vikings are 3-7 overall. Five of their seven losses are by less than five points.
Neshaminy 53, Notre Dame (N.J.) 26
Jen Slivka and Amanda Lally each scored 11 points to lead a balanced Redskin attack. Freshman point guard Megan Shafer added nine points and eight steals.
The Redskins (8-2) opened up a 14-9 lead at the end of one quarter and extended that lead to 28-14 by halftime on their way to the big win.
William Tennent 56, Upper Moreland 11
Alison Malatesta and Liz Koval each scored nine points while Ashley Alden and Emily O’Donnell both added eight. Melissa Wasseleben contributed seven points in a contest that saw the Panthers put nine player into the scoring column. The Lady Panthers are 5-2 on the season.
