2010 SOL Girls' BB Wrap (12-14-10)

Upper Dublin 52, Lansdale Catholic 48

The big news for the Flying Cardinals on Monday night was that they won in regulation after opening the season with triple and double overtime contests.
For his part, coach Vince Catanzaro was happy to simply escape with a win in LC’s small gym.
“The kids didn’t really understand how small this gym is,” the Flying Cardinals’ coach said. “I told them, ‘Every pass over the top can be picked off if you don’t throw it correctly.’
“We did a pretty good job. We jumped out to a 7-0 lead but then missed a bunch of layups.”
The Cardinals found themselves staring at a 20-17 deficit at the intermission, but defense, according to Catanzaro, was the name of the game in the second half. The Flying Cardinals came out of the intermission playing man-to-man after a spirited halftime meeting.
“We used a couple of our little ninth graders who came in and did a decent job,” Catanzaro said. “Overall, our guards did a much better job in the second half of taking care of the ball and making shots.
“I put our two big girls – Tori Waters and Megan Deetscreek – back in, and they did a much better job helping out on the man-to-man. We forced a lot of turnovers at the end.”
Taylor Bryant scored 17 points to lead the Flying Cardinals, who connected on 12-of-19 from the foul line. Curtrena Goff, who added 10 points, came close to a triple-double.
“She easily had 10 rebounds, and her steals have to be close to 10,” Catanzaro said. “She’s not even at the top of her game, but she did a way better job of not getting physically tired.
“Taylor Bryant couldn’t make a shot in the first half, and she ends up with 17. It’s a tough place to play basketball, and I’m just happy to come out of it with a win. I’m tickled.”
The Flying Cardinals will face Cheltenham in the SOL opener for both teams on Friday night.
Norristown 62, Harry S. Truman 44
Precious Tempson and Sydney Morse led the Eagles with 17 points each while India Grady added 12 and Nicole Graham, nine points. For the Tigers, Shannon McDuffie and Yonnique Harris each had 12 points.
The Tigers jumped out of the gate to a 13-8 lead at the end of one quarter but watched that slip away when the Eagles went on a 17-6 tear in the second quarter to go into halftime with a 25-19 lead.
“We came out strong,” Truman coach Collette Munford said. “We were playing a straight three-two zone, and we had the lead.
“Norristown went up by five points, and as soon as our girls see the other team getting a lead, they go into a slump. I kept telling them, ‘This game isn’t over. It’s only the second quarter. You play from beginning to end.’ This is going to be my biggest struggle.”
The Eagles all but put the game out of reach with an 18-9 third-quarter scoring burst.
“They tried to get into it toward the end, but we were slack on defense, and they were scoring right back,” Munford said.
While the Eagles improved to 2-0, the Tigers dropped to 1-2.
St. Hubert’s 42, Central Bucks East 39
Courtney McManus scored 11 points while Shawn Kane added 10, but it wasn’t enough as St. Hubert’s edged East in a non-league contest that featured one momentum swing after another.
The Bambies opened up a 12-5 lead at the end of one quarter only to watch the Patriots answer with a 12-6 run in the second quarter to make it an 18-17 game at the intermission. Kane sparked the Patriots’ run by scoring eight of her 10 points in the quarter.
It looked as though the Patriots had regained control of things after outscoring the Bambies 16-9 in the third quarter to take a 33-27 lead into the final frame. McManus led the charge with three three-point buckets while Lindsay Kelly added five points.
In the final quarter, the Bambies once again had the edge, outscoring the Patriots 15-6 for the 42-39 final.
Eireann Anastasi’s 21-point effort paced the Bambies.
