Boys
1-4 Pennsbury 3, 3-1 Dallastown 2
The Falcons reigned over the District Three champions, going up 3-0 early in the second half.
Dylan Smith put Pennsbury on the board with about 15 minutes to go in the second half. Thaddeus Heinz scored the second goal on an assist from Sawyer Waters, and Michael Loughery volleyed in the game winner from about 23 yards out off a re-start.
Dallastown made it interesting by scoring on a re-start and then a penalty kick late in the game, but the Falcon defense stood the test.
“We’re excited,” said coach Tom Stoddart. “The boys played well. They showed good composure at the end of the game.”
Pennsbury will play District Three fourth place Hempfield, a 2-0 winner over District Six champ Hollidaysburg, Saturday at a time and site to be determined.
1-3 Central Bucks East 4, 2-1 Coughlin 0
Three set pieces in the first 22 minutes took out any steam Coughlin had.
Lee Sandquist scored the first two goals on assists from Ken Hague and Chris Kneeshaw.
Hague then scored the third goal on an assist from Mike Gleason to make it 3-0 at the half.
“The boys played extremely well,” said coach Mike Gorni. “We connected a lot early.”
With 32 minutes left, Miguel Diaz made an endline run and passed to Eric Vare for the final tally.
The Patriots outshot Coughlin 21-2.
This will be the fourth consecutive year East has made it to the state quarterfinals.
“The kids are excited about that,” said Gorni.
East will take on District One champion Lower Merion, a 3-0 winner over District Three third place Mechanicsburg, Saturday at a time and site to be determined.
12-1 Archbishop Wood 5, 1-1 Upper Moreland 1
Upper Moreland took a 1-0 lead on the Catholic League champions in the 28th minute of the first half when Carl Wambold headed in Nate Roberts’ corner kick.
Wood came back two minutes later with the equalizer to make it 1-1 at the half.
The Golden Bears had several other opportunities in the first half, but couldn’t connect. The Wood keeper came up with one great save.
Wood took the lead with 28 minutes left to play and then scored another eight minutes later, basically demoralizing the Bears, who pushed up and gave up another two goals late.
“I’m not disappointed,” said coach Jack Knauss. “It was one of those things. The boys put their heart and soul into the game. As I told them all year, we’re a team. We win as a team and lose as a team.”
Upper Moreland finished its season at 14-5-0. The Bears also won their first ever District One Class AA title.
Girls
Conestoga 1, Council Rock South 0
After losing to the Golden Hawks 2-0 in the District One quarterfinals, Conestoga pulled off a huge upset.
The loss hurt even more because the Pioneers’ lone goal ricocheted off the leg of a Rock defender.
“It was just about their only shot and we put it in for them,” said coach John Oberholtzer.
The goal came in the first 15 minutes of play.
After that the Hawks were all over Conestoga, but among other things, they missed an open goal, hit a post and couldn’t convert a point-blank shot.
“I can’t tell you how we didn’t score,” said Oberholtzer. “We had better scoring opportunities than we did the first time we played them.”
After going to the state semifinals last year, the early loss was a bitter disappointment.
“It’s tough to face an opponent you beat 2-0,” said Oberholtzer. “You become too complacent.”
Council Rock South finished the season at 18-3-3.
Pennridge 1, Unionville 0
The Lady Rams found themselves in a real physical battle.
“It was close game,” said coach Jorge Rodriguez. “They were physical everywhere on the field. They were a fast, strong team and great in the air.”
Most of the game was played between the 18s.
But with 24 minutes left in the game, Stevi Parker won a ball in the back, dribbled forward deking one defender before getting fouled.
She struck a long ball inside the 18 to Maggie Butcher, who flicked it into the net.
The Pennridge defensive unit of Parker, Audrey Butcher, Carly Henry and Bridgette Hess kept the Indians at bay the entire game.
“They were phenomenal,” said Rodriguez. “They were the reason why we won.”
Pennridge will play District 12 champion Archbishop Wood, a 2-1 winner over West Chester East, Saturday at a site and time to be determined.
“We’re looking forward to it,” said Rodriguez. “We want to play the best that’s out there. It will be a very intense game.”
6-1 State College 1, 1-7 Central Bucks South 0
It was a long ride back from Central Dauphin, where the Titans played State College.
It was another of those games in which the Titans controlled most of the play and couldn’t finish their chances.
State College, on the other hand, took advantage of the one good chance it had 25 minutes into the second half.
“We just don’t have consistent finishers,” said coach Joe Bocklet.
The Titans finished their season at 14-8-2.
1-3 Central Bucks West 1, 2-1 Abington Heights 0
The Lady Bucks won their first state game even without their best player Lindsay Horst who was sick.
West will face Conestoga Saturday at a time and site to be determined.
