2011 District Baseball Preview (Round 2)

By Scott Huff

[N-7] Truman had to wait 24 hours to play its PIAA District One Quad-A first round playoff game with visiting [S-10] Garnet Valley due to wet fields at Truman.

It was worth the wait.

The Tigers advanced to a second round game with host West Chester East with a 5-0 victory over the Jaguars.

“It was a great game – we did everything right today,” said Truman head coach Jeff Vitale. “We executed very well in everything we did – running the bases, fielding the baseball, and timely hitting. And Zach Phillipi threw a great game.”

Phillipi threw a complete game shutout for Truman and struck out three hitters.

The Tigers had RBI delivered by James Wallace, Ryan Hires, Kyle Tepper, and Shane Monahan.

“This was without question the best game that we have played all season,” said Vitale. “We did all the little things.”

PIAA District One Class AAA Playoffs

Upper Moreland edges Upper Merion – again

[No. 2] Upper Moreland will advance to the PIAA Class AAA semifinals as the Golden Bears defeated visiting [N-7] Upper Merion – 6-5.

It was the fourth time this season that Upper Moreland has beaten Upper Merion this season – all by a single run.

“I feel bad for Upper Merion, I thought that they really deserved a higher seed in the tournament,” said Upper Moreland head coach Ernie Rehr. “They deserved better.

“We won this game because of the things that we have done all season – hustle and manufacture runs,” added Rehr. “We do what we need to do to win games.”

The Golden Bears had fine efforts by senior Kyle Walder and sophomore Robert Knox to secure the win. Walder – who had a bases loaded double that cleared the bases – threw the first six-plus innings. Knox – who scored the game-winning run – was the winning pitcher.
