2011 Flyers Cup Final Preview

By Scott Huff

The only question that has been answered for certainty is that the Suburban High School Hockey League will have a team that will hoist the coveted 2011 Flyers Cup in victory.

Council Rock South – the SHSHL regular season champion – was awarded the # 1 seed in the Flyers Cup tournament, and the Golden Hawks flew to the title game. Central Bucks East – the SHSHL playoff champion – was awarded the # 2 seed in the Flyers Cup tournament, and the Patriots marched to the title game.

“I would be shocked if it isn’t a one-goal game or goes into an overtime or two,” said Council Rock North head coach Eric Tye. “The two teams are really that close.

“CB East has three legitimate varsity lines, but CR South has game changers in (Patrick) Grilli and (Zack) Goodman,” added Tye. “CB East may be a deeper team overall, but CR South might have a very slight edge in goal.

“All I know is that a Suburban team is going to play in the state championship game,” continued Tye. “And both CB East and CR South are excellent teams and will represent both the league and the Flyers Cup well.”

That state title game – against the winner of the Penguins Cup – will take place on Saturday (3/26/11) at the Ice Line Rink in West Chester. The face-off for the championship contest will be 1:30 pm.

Road To The Flyers Cup Final:

Council Rock South began its journey to the championship game with a 3-2 victory over # 16 Perkiomen Valley. Kyle Walter scored a pair of goals for the Golden Hawks, while Patrick Grilli added a single goal. CR South won its second round game with # 8 North Penn by a 5-3 score – Grilli scored a pair of goals for the winners while Jake Nevin and Mitchell Vaysman scored solo goals. The Golden Hawks won their semifinal tilt 3-1 against # 12 Cherokee (NJ). Grilli, Nick Keck, and Tom Kopania each scored single goals for the winners.

Central Bucks East began its journey to the championship game with a 3-1 victory over # 15 Conestoga. Tom Schloendorn scored a couple of goals for the Patriots while Nick Patullo added a single goal. CB East won its second round game with # 10 Boyertown by a 3-0 margin. Schloendorn, Patullo, and Mike Palmer all scored single goals for East. The Patriots won their semifinal contest against # 11 Spring-Ford by a 6-0 margin. Schloendorn scored a pair of goals for the winners while John Esposito, Ryan Joyce, Joe Caperelli, and Patullo each scored solo goals.

Players To Watch:
Central Bucks East: Austin Cinalli, Michael Palmer, Justin Golia, Joe Caperelli, Tom Schloendorn, Joe Ridolfi, John Esposito, Tyler McIntosh, Vince Esposito, Alex Piccione, and Nick Patullo.
Council Rock South: Steve Jastrow, Tom Kopania, Vincenzo Primavera, Tom Kozior, Kyle Walter, Steve Junod, Jake Nevin, Shane Ryan, Zack Goodman, Nick Keck, Patrick Grilli, Dan Ufberg, and Mitch Vaysman.

Behind the Mask:

Council Rock South senior goaltender Steve Jastrow has been outstanding in goal during Flyers Cup competition with 74 saves and a stunning 92.5% save average.
“I have a high standard to meet as a goalie for Council Rock South,” said Jastrow. “To play against CB East in the final is special. I have a lot of friends on Central Bucks East.

Central Bucks East senior goal tender Justin Golia has also been outstanding in goal during Flyers Cup competition with 52 saves and a fabulous 98.1% save average.
“The game with Council Rock South should be a real bloodbath,” said Golia. “This is the team we wanted to play in the finals all along, and to play them in a Flyers Cup Final is huge.

Head To Head in the SHSHL:

Council Rock South defeated Central Bucks East in both meetings during the regular season this 2010-2011 SHSHL season.
The Golden Hawks opened the SHSHL season on October 6 with a 7-3 victory over the Patriots. Patrick Grilli had a hat trick for the winners while Steve Junod, Kyle Walter, and Nick Keck had single goals. Steve Jastrow had 24 saves for the winners. The Patriots had a pair of goals scored by Tyler McIntosh and a single goal by Austin Cinalli. Justin Golia had 20 saves for CBE.
Council Rock South won its January 6 game with Central Bucks East – 4-3. Grilli, Zack Goodman, Tom Kopania, and Shane Ryan scored solo goals for the Hawks, while Jastrow had 18 saves. The CB East goal scorers were Cinalli, McIntosh, and Nick Patullo. Golia had 23 saves for the Patriots.

Prediction: Both teams richly deserve the opportunity to decide who is the best team not only in the Suburban High School Hockey League – but also in the entire eastern half of the state of Pennsylvania. The fact that CR South defeated CB East twice during the regular season shouldn’t be a huge factor since the last meeting was over two months ago. The only real prediction that can be made here is that is should be an extremely competitive game. I agree with SHSHL sage Eric Tye – my prediction is – Overtime.
