2011 Ice Hockey Rink 'Rap (Vol. 10)

By Scott Huff

A pivotal game will be played in the Suburban One Hockey League American Division this week as second place Upper Dublin (7-3-0, 14) will meet fourth place Wissahickon (5-5-0, 10) in a huge rivalry game.

The game will be played at the Bucks County Ice Sports Center on Thursday night – 8:40 pm.

A victory for Upper Dublin would thrust the Flying Cardinals into first place by a point of Hatboro-Horsham (7-3-1, 15).

“We are in a position where we have to win games,” said Upper Dublin head coach Dave Japchen. “Wissahickon is a very physical team, and we have the match their physicality if we want to compete with them.

“We have to skate well and take quality shots,” added Japchen. “We surely can’t afford to take any stupid penalties.”

Upper Dublin enters the game on the heels of a 6-2 victory over winless Upper Moreland (0-9-1). The Cardinals fired 56 shots on Bear goalie Jared Burch who turned away a staggering 50 shots.

Wissahickon enters the game on the heels of a 3-2 win over Lansdale Catholic (7-5-0, 12).

“We are getting better and better,” said Wissahickon head coach Ryan McLaughlin. “The smarter we play – the longer we stay out of the penalty box – the better results we are going to get.

“We have to be ready to play (Brian) Markman tough when we play Upper Dublin,” added McLaughlin of the leading scorer in the SHSHL American Division. “We have to limit his space and make him play outside the ‘dots’.

“(Goaltender) Adam Solomon is a senior and has played all season with confidence,” continued McLaughlin. “Having him in goal is a real plus for us.”

And Wissahickon hopes that plus will add up to a key victory.

North Penn (8-5-4, 20) will make its stretch run to the SHSHL Class AA playoffs as either the number four or five seed.

“Being either a four or five really isn’t going to matter,” said North Penn head coach Kevin Vaitis. “What does matter is whether or not we are playing good hockey going into the playoffs.

“We need to fine tune our game in the last two weeks,” added Vaitis. “We want to win games, but we need to sharpen our game.”

The Knights will get to sharpen their game against some of the SHSHL’s best over the last week weeks of the season.

In addition to North Penn’s contest with Neshaminy (5-7-5, 15) on 2/10/11, the Knights must face Central Bucks East (15-3-0, 30) on 2/17/11 and Council Rock South (16-0-1, 33) on 2/18/11.

“Jimmy McKelvie, Dave Heggan, and Dan Corrado have all done a great job this season on the power play and our penalty killing teams,” said Vaitis of his senior trio. “And Caleb Witzaney had played great defense all year.

“We have a couple of sophomore goal tenders who have split the job in Cody Matthews and Jake Wolff,” continued Vaitis. “We would like to see one of them step up and take a lead. We would like to settle on one goalie going into the playoffs.”

Those SHSHL Class AA playoffs – as either a four or five seed.

Stay tuned.
