Rock South Solid On Defense

Council Rock South (7-11) played terrific team defense as the Golden Hawks flew to a 67-16 victory over Automotive High School from New York.

South hosted the Pennsylvania-New York challenge event that also featured North Penn and Bensalem from the Suburban One League.

“We have had our ups and downs this season, and this was an ‘up’,” said Council Rock South head coach John Easterly. “Before the game the players were told to play our style of basketball, and we did that.

“We controlled the paint,” added Easterly as the Golden Hawks owned a 38-11 advantage on the backboards. “And we played very smart basketball.”

At the head of the class for Rock South might have been 6-foot, 7-inch senior Jimmy Ivers who scored nine points and collected nine rebounds.

“This was Jimmy’s best game of the season,” said Easterly. “He was a huge part in how we dominated the backboards.”

Justin Thomas led Rock South in scoring with a game-high 17 points. Christian Crane added 13 points for the winners.

“We have four league games left,” said Easterly. “We play some very good teams, and we look forward to that challenge.”

Good Night for the Knights

North Penn (12-4) stopped a three-game losing streak with a 56-48 victory over Newtown (New York).

“In a game like this, with a team from the city, there isn’t as many X’s and O’s,” said North Penn head coach Ron Hassler. “Teams from the city give you some different looks and come at you with a lot of quickness.”

North Penn had three players score in double figures.

Dexter Shy and Javi Alvarino each scored 13 points to lead the Knights, while Matt Possanza scored in twin digits with 11 points.

“Dexter has had two very good games in a row, and I think he is finally getting over his knee problems,” said Hassler. “And Javi probably played his best game of the season. He continues to progress, and he will be a big help in the final two weeks.”

Also helping the North Penn cause will be the return of 6-foot, 4-inch senior Connor Silhanek. Silhanek – who was injured in a car accident – has missed the entire season.

“He won’t by 100 per cent right away,” said Hassler. “But we are glad to have him back.”
