Suburban One League Matinee Hoops

Due to the forecasted ice storm there were four Suburban One League basketball games moved from the evening to the afternoon on Tuesday.

Good move.

Golden Hawks fly to late victory

Council Rock South (8-11, 4-7) guard Zach Fitzgerald connected on a free throw with just eight seconds left to secure a 46-45 Suburban One National Conference victory over visiting Abington (7-12, 3-8).

“The players were very sluggish at the beginning of the game,” said Council Rock head coach John Easterly in reference to the 4 pm start. “The energy level for both teams was off, but it ended up being a very good game.”

Golden Hawk forward Justin Thomas had some impressive numbers as he scored 20 points and collected 12 rebounds.

“Justin scored most of his points inside,” said Easterly of his 6-foot, 3-inch player. “He uses his body very well, and he has great footwork.”

CR South guard Mike Dipaolo was impressive on the defensive end of the court for the Hawks.

“Mike is always assigned to the other team’s top offensive player,” said Easterly. “Wesley Rines is an excellent player, and Mike held him to just three points.”

Abington was led in scoring by sophomore Jordan Simmons who scored a team-high 15 points. Senior DJ McFadden scored 14 points for the Ghosts.

“We out rebounded them 32-17, and that played a huge part of the game,” said Easterly. “PJ Gallo had a good game off the boards with 10 rebounds.”

Dipaolo had seven steals to go with his seven points, while Christian Crane had eight assists to go with his eight points.

Council Rock North (16-1, 10-0) remained unbeaten in SOL National Conference play with an easy 56-37 victory over visiting Pennsbury (5-13, 3-8).

“We did a very good job defensively on them,” said Council Rock North head coach Derek Wright. “They really like to get up and down the floor. We were able to score points and that eliminated transition, and that created a lot of half-court sets.”

Arron Goodman was impressive for the Indians with a 29-point, 12-rebound performance against the Falcons.

“Arron got to the rim early in the game and really hit the offensive boards hard,” said Wright. “And in the second half, he scored some from the perimeter. He was difficult for them to guard the entire game.”

Pennsbury was led in scoring by Zach Sibel who scored a team-high 11 points for the Falcons.

“We really needed to get this game in,” said Wright as the Indians had its last two games postponed. “It was a little tough to get motivated, but it was the best that we could do.”

Janeus Somers scored a game-high 17 points to pace the Knights, while Javi Alvarino added 13 points for the winners.

“Both Sean and Wes (Brooks brothers), and Matt (Possanza), have been drawing a lot of attention from the other teams,” said Hassler. “But now that we have Janeus, Javi, and Dexter (Shy) more involved in the offense, we have become a more complete team.”

Central Bucks South was led in scoring by Steve Schneider who scored a team-high 14 points.

“I thought we would be playing this game in an empty gym,” said Hassler in reference to the 4 pm game start. “But we had a lot of students at the game, and they played a big part in the win.”
