Suburban One League Continental Conference

Souderton (13-7, 8-4) head coach Dennis Stanton has coached all of 20 games during his scholastic coaching career, but his biggest win came Friday night as the host Big Red edged first place Pennridge (15-5, 9-3) – 57-51.

The win moved Souderton a game behind both Pennridge and North Penn (15-4, 9-3) in the SOL Continental Conference standings. Central Bucks West (13-7, 8-4) is tied in with the Big Red in conference.

“Considering the importance of the game, sure this is the biggest win,” grinned Stanton. “Pennridge really jumped hard on us the first time, and we talked about making sure that we execute early in the game.

“If you don’t get defensive stops on Pennridge, they can run you out of a game with their transition,” added Stanton. “We played very well at the beginning of the game.”

Souderton played suffocating defense and led 9-2 with just 1:52 left in the first period. The quarter closed with the Big Red up by a 12-6 score.

Pennridge responded with a fine second period – outscoring the Big Red 21-10 and taking a 27-22 halftime lead.

“For some reason, we came out very flat in the third quarter,” said Pennridge head coach Dean Behrens. “We have to find the answer to that question.”

Flat – as a pancake – a really flat pancake.

Souderton held the inept Rams to just three points and a 1-of-10 shooting performance. Toss in a couple of turnovers, and it wasn’t one of Pennridge’s finest periods.

The Big Red countered with a terrific third period performance as Mark Wonderling began to assert himself as the best player on the floor.

Wonderling - who showcased some wonderful drives to the basket - scored eight straight points in that decisive third quarter and finished with a game-high 18 points.

“Mark is a very mature basketball player that makes very mature decisions,” said Stanton. “He deserves the success that he had tonight.

“When he plays like that, he is like a beast possessed,” added Stanton. “Not only did he have the 18 points, he also had seven assists.”

Pennridge rallied to score 21 points in the fourth period to make a game of it. The closest the Rams got was to 51-48 at the 0:48-second mark on a basket by senior guard Mike Guldin.

Guldin led Pennridge in scoring with 18 points and was the lone double figure scorer for the Rams.

“When we got it down to a one possession game, I thought we still had a shot at winning the game,” said Behrens. “This was a must game for them, and their coaching staff and players did a nice job.

“We can’t let this loss blur the big picture,” said Behrens. “We still have a chance to win something.”

And with this critical Big Red victory – so does Souderton – and North Penn – and Central Bucks West.

Bensalem (15-4, 10-2) rebounded from its loss to Neshaminy [52-50] to defeat host Abington (7-13, 3-9) – 48-41.

“Abington in their building is a very tough game, and we didn’t want to lose there with a second straight loss,” said Bensalem head coach John Mullin. “Abington is a very good team – much better than their record – and their guards can present a real problem.”

The Ghost backcourt tandem of Jordan Simmons (15 points) and DJ McFadden (14) did most of their damage in the first half.

“It’s hard for me to believe that we held them to just one field goal in the fourth quarter,” said Mullin. “Calvin Brown did a great job defensively blocking shots.”

Brown – who scored 13 points and had a dozen rebounds – blocked six Ghost shots.

Sophomore scoring sensation Leo Vincent led the Owls with 18 points and shot well from beyond the arc.

“We have some big games ahead of us,” said Mullin. “It was great to get out of Abington with a win.”
