February 17, 2011 – 7 pm. – Bucks County Ice Center on York Road in Warminster.

Upper Dublin (8-3-0, 16) will meet Hatboro-Horsham (7-3-1, 15) for the Suburban High School Hockey League American Division championship.

“We always play tough games against Hatboro-Horsham,” said Upper Dublin head coach Dave Japchen after his Flying Cardinals defeated Wissahickon (5-6-0, 10) by a 10-4 margin in a division game played at BCI. “We are really looking forward to playing them, and the championship goes to the winner.”

But in order for Upper Dublin to entertain title dreams, the Cardinals had to defeat a scrappy Wissahickon team that has proven to be a nemesis in the recent past.

“Wissahickon beat us every game last year and knocked us out of the (SHSHL) playoffs,” said Upper Dublin’s Tyler Peskin who scored a pair of goals in the win. “And they beat us (4-3) in the big Thanksgiving game this year. Every game we play them is very intense.”

Upper Dublin jetted to an early 5-1 lead and appeared to be on cruise control, but the Trojans rallied for three straight goals to slice the lead to 5-4.

The leading goal scorer for the Trojans was Joey Sutow with a pair of goals. David Pataki and Sean Delaney each scored single goals for Wissy.

“I was very encouraged by our comeback,” said Wissahickon head coach Ryan McLaughlin. “But we got caught by their speed, and we let # 18 beat us.”

Number 18 is the leading scorer in the SHSHL American Division – Brian Markman. Markman scored three goals – as did team mate Samuel Etskovitz – and Upper Dublin broke the game wide open in the third period.

“Markman gives Upper Dublin all of their swagger,” said McLaughlin. “There are no surprises when you play Upper Dublin – you either shut down Markman or you lose the game.”

“Actually, a three goal game is a bad night for him,” smiled Japchen in reference to his prolific scorer. “We spread the wealth around tonight, and the players are starting to buy into what we have been telling them.

“Brian made some great passes to teammates tonight,” added Japchen. “And we double shifted him some of defense, as well.”

If Upper Dublin can defeat Hatboro-Horsham next week and win the SHSHL American Division title, then the Flying Cardinals would meet Wissahickon in the first round of the playoffs.

“We would be ready – without a doubt,” said McLaughlin of the possible matchup. “The games with them are all intense – we have to remember just to play ice hockey.”
