Wissahickon set two meet records in the Plymouth Whitemarsh Colonial Relays held on Saturday. The Trojans set records in both the 4 x 100 relay hurdles and the 4 x 800 meter relay, while Wissy also took gold in the 4 x 200 relay.

“To be honest, we expected that out of the 4 x 800 relay,” said Wissahickon head coach Don Betterly. “In fact, I thought we might run a little better time with the experience and talent of that group. They ran a 7:52 last year, and I thought we might be closer to 7:40.”

The Trojan foursome – which clocked in at 7:57.66 - consisted of seniors Dillion Farrell, Ben Ravatz, and Hong Cho. Junior Sam Brooks ran the lead leg for Wissahickon. Cho ran the best split with a time of 1:55.1.

“I have a decision to make with that group as the season goes on,” said Betterly. “Dillion is a good 3200 guy, Ben is a good miler, and Hong is a terrific 800 runner. I really think they might run individually, but we have time to figure that out.”

Cho – who will attend Cornell University next fall – finished seventh in states last year in the 800.

“There was about a half a second difference between third and eighth place,” said Betterly. “He ran a 1:53.67 which is the second fastest 800 in the history of the school. (Ken Lowry ran a 1:51.1 in 1982 for the school record).

“Hong is an easy going kid, but he always wants to run against the best competition whether it is a dual meet or a state championship meet,” added Betterly. “He began in our program as somewhat of a timid kid, but he has grown into a real competitor.”

Wissahickon also set a meet record in the 4 x 100 hurdles. The quartet of runners for the Trojans was juniors Max Hairston and Jeremy Cho along with seniors Wesley Hayward and Jim Young Park. The group broke the tape in a record 1:02.84.

The final gold medal performance – although not a meet record – came from the foursome of Hairston, Park, freshman Dave Stellato, and senior Anthony Delegall. The winning time in the 4 x 200 relay was 1:32.31.

“(Senior) Eric Jones is out with a hamstring injury,” said Betterly. “And if he comes back healthy, we should be able to improve on some of our relay times.”

One meet record at a time.

Maidens Capture Zephyr Relays
4/2/11 @ Whitehall

The North Penn Maidens headed north to Whitehall and dominated the competition with seven first place finishes.

On the track, the Maidens captured the distance medley relay in 12:49.46. The foursome of runners included Rachel Brown, Alicia Piscitelli, Lynne Deckel, and Meghan McGovern. North Penn won the 4 x 800 relay in a time of 10:13.49 with the quartet of Deckel, Brown, McGovern, and Colleen McGovern. The Maidens captured the 800-meter sprint medley with the foursome of Jillian Sarm, Lexi Wallace, Syndee Jacques, and Rachel Oberholtzer in a clocking of 1:57.

“The weather has been so bad so far, that the girls might be a little frustrated – even with the success,” said North Penn head coach Jim Crawford, “And when the wind picked up, it was hard for us to get the times we wanted. But better days will come.

“We like participating in this meet because they let us run an ‘A’ and ‘B’ team,” added the coach. “It gives us an opportunity to get a lot of kids to participate.”

In the field, North Penn won the discus relay with the tandem of Taylor Harkins and Christine Johnson with a distance of 171-2. The pair of Nicolette Hill and Bridget Coffey won the javelin with a combined effort of 186-7. The high jump team of Coffey and Kaliah Holmes combined for a height of 10-2, while the shot put pair of Harkins and Kristin Norrison combined for a distance of 65-1.5.

“The high jump was a nice surprise,” said Crawford of the Coffey-Holmes performance. “Bridget qualified with a jump of 5-2, and Kaliah jumped 5 feet even. Together they were only an inch off the school record.”

The Maidens will have a SOL Continental meet with Pennridge on Tuesday, and will take part in the Lady Skins meet at Neshaminy on Saturday.

Council Rock Kiwanis Invitational
4/2/11 @ CR North

Council Rock North hosted and won its invitational for the first time since 1992 as the Indians lapped the field in an impressive showing. Rock North finished with 140 team points while Glen Mills and Cardinal O’Hara tied for second with just 68 points.

“We go into the meet with different individual goals and different team expectations,” said Council Rock North boys’ head coach Dave Marrington. “But none of us really thought that we would win the meet this easily. We have a really balanced team, and we had a good day.

“We run the meet much like a college meet,” added Marrington. “I think one of the appeals that this meet has is that we run some events that are usually only run at the college level.”

One of those events was the 5000-meter run.

“Chris Campbell broke the record for the 5000,” said Marrington. “He ran a great race - but really - we expected him to run that kind of race and with that result.”

Campbell shattered the record with a time of 15.22.22.

The Indians were also impressive in the sprint medley. Austin Hartley (100 meters), Ferguson Amo (100), Josh Mindlin (200) and Dan Ruth (400) combined for a winning time of 1:36.8.

The same foursome – Ruth, Hartley, Amo, and Mindlin – teamed up for a gold medal effort in the 4 x 100.

“We were close to the school record in the 4 x 100,” said Marrington. “And for us to do that at the beginning of the year is very encouraging.”

Rock North’s Bobby Perepiczka took top honors in the pole vault with a leap of 13-0, and John Raymon was the best of the shot putters with a toss of 50-2.

“What made John’s performance impressive was that he has only been with us for about a week,” said Marrington. “He was a big part of the basketball team’s success, and they went very deep into the season. He was close to his personal best, and we should see even better.”

Council Rock North – the defending SOL National Conference champion – will host Abington in a conference showdown on Tuesday.

“Abington is the state indoor champion,” said Marrington. “Our kids won it last year, and we want to do it again. It should be a great meet.”
