2011 Track & Field Notebook (Vol. 2)

By Scott Huff

Neshaminy head coach Margie Taylor is in her first year as head coach of the Lady Skins.

And now the energetic 23-year old coach can add Meet Director to her resume as Neshaminy hosted the Lady Skins Invitational on Saturday.

“There isn’t any place that I would rather be or anything that I would love doing more than coaching track,” said Taylor – a Neshaminy graduate who earned state medals for the Lady Skins 4x100 relays in 2004 and 2005. “Being the director of the meet was a lot of preparation.

“I had to make sure that we had officials, time systems, snack stand food, and t-shirts,” added Taylor. “I started early in the year getting ready, and I had a lot of help. I thought the day turned out great.”

The day was also exceptional for Neshaminy freshman Megan Schafer who was competing for the first time in a Saturday Invitational. Schafer was just 0.2 of a second off a district qualifying time in the 400 meter, and just 0.1 of a second off the qualifying time in the 200 meter.

“Megan has a tremendous kick at the end of the race,” said Taylor. “We are so happy to have Megan as a member of this track team.”

Schafer – who was selected as Bucks County Player of the Year in soccer – would not have been able to be a part of the Lady Skins in the recent past. Girls’ soccer was shifted from the spring to the fall before the arrival of Schafer to the track program.

“We have two other girls that would have been part of the soccer program that are a huge part of this team,” said Taylor. “Both (sophomore) Erin Farrell and (junior) Kacey Cernkowski are also very good soccer players.

“Right now, we are running the three of them as individuals,” added Taylor. “But when we get to districts, the three of them and (sophomore) Jess Stecklein will run together on the 4x100. That should be an excellent team.”

Cheltenham had a pair of super performances during the meet as both sophomore Kalya Coley and Kelly Anne Stuetz.

Coley had the best time in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 45.51, while Stuetz took a second in the high jump with a leap of 5-4.

“Kayla is an exceptional talent that has focused hard on the 300 hurdles this year,” said Cheltenham head coach Kelly Jensen. “She should have a time in the top five in the state. I have been very pleased with her commitment this year.

“Kayla is learning how to focus and is much more determined this year,” added Jensen. “She completes workouts that other kids just can do. She has a range of running anything between 200 and 400 meters.

“And Kelly is extremely strong mentally and continues to make adjustments,” continued Jensen. “She is a terrific student, and both her and Kalya have been great to work with this year.”

1st Annual Bensalem Invitational

Wrong!

“This really isn’t the first invitational we have hosted at Bensalem,” said Owl head coach Mary Ellen Malloy. “But it is the first one we have hosted since the mid-90’s. We used to run in a meet hosted by Holy Ghost Prep this week, but they were not hosting the meet this year.

“The coaching staff and I had been talking about hosting an invitational again, and the opportunity was there,” added Malloy. “My team did a great job of getting things together and doing a lot of work. Everyone worked real hard, and it was a great event with 12 teams participating.”

One of the hardest workers on the Owl team is Brad Rivera. who registered the second best time in the 1600-meters with a personal best of 4:29.83.

“Brad has been training very hard, and for him to go from 4:37 to 4:29 is huge,” said Malloy. “He had the right combination of good weather and good competition. I told him that it is only April 9, and he has great times to look forward to.”
