The 2013-2014 Suburban One League basketball season has begun and the respective conference races began Thursday with all 24 SOL teams having an equal opportunity of becoming conference champions.

The following players – Cameron Jones (Pennsbury – SOL National), Chase Wilson (Wissahickon – SOL American), and Zach Quattro (Hatboro-Horsham – SOL Continental) – have been selected as the top returning players from each conference.

And the beat goes on…

Cameron Jones – Pennsbury Falcons

The bloodlines are there when you consider the significant talents of Pennsbury junior Cameron Jones.

“His dad, Gary, is on our staff and had a great career at Pennsbury and then at La Salle,” said Pennsbury head coach Bill Coleman.  “His uncle Mike was a great player at Pennsbury and went to Rutgers, and his cousin Torian was an outstanding player here and went to Notre Dame.  Cameron is sure to continue that family legacy.”

Jones has already begun to get that Division One notice despite two more seasons to be played at the scholastic level.

“He has gotten a lot of looks – a lot of attention,” said Coleman.  “And for good reason.  He does a lot of things well both on offense and on defense.

“Cameron can bury the 3’s, but he can also go hard to the rim,” added Coleman.  “And what sometimes get lost is the fact that he is a very good defender and rebounder.  When we need a stop defensively, we usually are going to have Cameron match up on that player.

“We expect a lot of him this year,” continued Coleman.  “And he is the type of player that will work hard to achieve what is expected of him.”

After all, it’s in his genes.

Chase Wilson – Wissahickon Trojans

Wissahickon senior point/shooting guard Chase Wilson is the son of Trojan head coach Kyle Wilson.  And the gifted 6-0 leader of the team is an extension of good old Dad on the floor.

“Chase has a great handle on who needs a little kick in the butt or someone who might need a pat on the back,” said Kyle Wilson.  “It is great to have that leadership on the floor, and as a guard, he gets that chance to lead.”

Leadership is just part of the wonderful package that the younger Wilson brings to his team.  Wilson has had collegiate looks from Mount St. Mary’s, South Carolina (Aiken), Bloomsburg, East Stroudsburg, and West Chester among others.

“Chase has always been a good outside shooter – a great 3-point threat,” said Wilson.  “But now he attacks the rim much better and can draw fouls.  And he is a very good free throw shooter.

“Chase seems to draw a lot of attention from the other team,” added Wilson.  “And when that happens he can distribute the ball to the other players in good scoring positions.  He can make his teammates better.

“He had his breakout year when he was a sophomore and we went 19-3,” continued Wilson.  “He continued to improve last year, and we expect a lot of him this season.  It is a wide open division, and the team that finds its identity first is going to win this division.  I like our chances.”

And who wouldn’t with the talented Wilson running the floor.

Zach Quattro – Hatboro-Horsham Hatters

Hatboro-Horsham senior Zach Quattro stands an imposing 6-foot, 6-inches tall.  But don’t get the idea that Quattro lives along the baseline of the Hatter offense.

“Zach led us in 3’s last season and was one of the leading three-point shooters in all of Southeastern Pennsylvania,” said Hatboro-Horsham head coach Dennis Steinly.  “He had 49 three-point field goals last year, and he is one of the most natural scorers that I have ever seen.

“Zach not only has a touch from outside, but he has a soft touch inside as well,” added Steinly.  “He can get his shot off – on the inside or the outside – against anyone.

“He can clog up the middle on defense and is a great shot blocker,” continued Steinly.  “And he can block shots without getting into foul trouble.  He can dominate a game.”

Quattro has already committed to LeMoyne College next season to play at the next level.

“Zach does a lot for us, and he will do his part to help us repeat as conference champions,” said Steinly.  “He is very good – and he makes us a much better team with the way he can share the ball.”
