2022 DISTRICT ONE TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP FIRST ROUND SET

Central Bucks East Hosts First Round

By Glenn Kaiser

Central Bucks East (8-4) landed the #11 seed in the 2022 District One Team Championship and will host the first round this coming Thursday January 27, 2022.  The hosts will take on #6 Boyertown (10-4) from the Pioneer Athletic Conference (PAC).  Both teams dropped in the seeding after suffering losses over the past two weeks.  Boyertown suffered a 33-30 loss to #12 seed Perkiomen Valley (11-3) this past Wednesday but finished in second place at the PAC league tournament over the weekend.  Boyertown remained a top eight seed despite their losses in the PAC to Spring-Ford (#4 seed/10-3)) and PV.  CB East on the other hand has lost two straight Suburban One League Colonial Conference matches to North Penn (36-21 Wednesday) and #5 Pennridge (9-3) last week.

As predicted, Quakertown, undefeated at 10-0, is the #1 seeded team in the 16-team field, and Council Rock South (5-1) with their only loss to the Panthers are seeded second.  Both teams will travel to CBE for their opening round matches in the dual championship.  Both should have easy first round contests.  Quakertown will tangle with #16 Downingtown West (Ches-Mont/8-4) and South will grapple #15 Owen J Roberts (PAC).  OJR comes in with a 6-8 losing record, but has a recent win over #14 Strath Haven (Central League/10-2).

#5 Pennridge (9-3) made the biggest jump in seeding, as they are on fire with back-to-back SOL Colonial wins over CBE and Souderton.  They will wrestle Perk Valley at CBE as well on Thursday in what would have been an epic battle if PV came in at full strength, but with three starters out, Pennridge will be heavily favored.  Pennsbury (10-5) comes in at #10 and will look to avenge an earlier season loss (39-31) to #7 Kennent (10-1).  Pennsbury was looking like a top-eight seed earlier, but with a hot Kennent team and the loss to them, along with recent losses to Garnet Valley (#8) and Pennridge, they dropped to #10.

#13 Souderton (5-6) makes six SOL teams in the tourney. The Indians will wrestle a much improved #4 Spring-Ford (10-2) at Oxford Thursday night.  This bracket looks destined for an earlier season rematch between Quakertown and CR South for the title, but there will be a lot of wrestling contested before that may occur, and as in the past, anything can happen in these duals.  Quakertown, in their first dual meet of the season, narrowly downed the Golden Hawks 33-31.  There is a definite drop-off of caliber after #3 West Chester Henderson and Q-town and CRS, but don’t look past any team, as it seems this has been a season, that has proven that any team can beat any other depending on match-ups and strength of a full line-up.
