PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Week one of the 2023 football season was the “Week of the Bucks.” Central Bucks West stole the spotlight with its 17-13 win over defending District 1 6A champion Garnet Valley. The win not only avenged three West losses over the past two seasons to the Jaguars, including a season-ending loss in each of the last two seasons, it also snapped an impressive 34-game winning streak in district play for Garnet Valley. As a result, it’s hard to argue with the selection of West players as the Sterling Limo Player of the Week and the Sterling Limo Defensive Players of the Week. Central Bucks South’s Anthony Leonardi was named Sterling Limo Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Titans’ 13-10 win over Father Judge.

PLAYER OF TE WEEK

Cooper Taylor, Central Bucks WestA back-up at quarterback the past three years, the Bucks’ veteran defensive back was thrust into a starting role when Ganz Cooper, a three-year starter at QB, injured his knee and was lost for the season. Taylor answered the call, racing 62 yards for a touchdown on his team’s first play from scrimmage, effectively setting the tone for a big night for both the senior quarterback and the Bucks. Taylor finished the night with 20 carries for 177 yards and a touchdown to lead the way in West’s 17-13 win over Garnet Valley. He also completed 5 of 9 passes in his varsity debut behind center. West coach Rob Rowen had high praise for his senior QB after last Friday’s performance.

Coach Rob Rowan says: “Cooper’s a kid who has tremendous confidence in himself, our coaching staff has tremendous confidence in him, and our players have tremendous confidence in Cooper. So, when you really start looking at those three things, Cooper stepped on the field feeling very confident from all the different perspectives that he needed to in terms of himself, from his teammates and from his coaching staff.
“I’m not going to tell you I’m not surprised any time you open a game with a 62-yard touchdown, but at the same time, I would say I wasn’t surprised – just knowing who Cooper is and the way he goes about his business. I couldn’t be more proud and just elated for him to be able to get this opportunity and start his career off this way.”

DEFENSIVE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Jack Williams, Chris Hutchinson, Jeff Cappa, AJ Grace & Matt Cleland/Defensive Line, Central Bucks WestIn a contest that featured defensive heroes galore, the Bucks’ defensive line was unquestionably the catalyst, limiting Garnet Valley’s vaunted running attack to only 49 yards in a 17-13 West win. To put the Bucks’ defensive performance in perspective, Garnet Valley had 42 carries for 303 yards and four touchdowns in last year’s district title game (a 35-7 Garnet Valley win). The defensive line also forced multiple quarterback hurries that led to four interceptions, and the final theft by Vance Morelli iced the win for the Bucks and came after a hurry the result of the pass rush by Jack Williams.
