H-H’s Morrison Leads the way for SOL Grapplers on to SemiFinals
By Glenn Kaiser
Hershey, PA-Hatboro-Horsham’s super-frosh Dominick Morrison advanced to the 107-pound semifinals with a well earned win over Whitehall’s Wilmont Kai 2-0. Morrison rode out a lasso takedown on the edge scored in the first period. That was all he needed to mark a place on the podium for him, but he has work to do as the ultimate prize requires one match at a time to be won. Morrison has prepared all season for this shining moment, and a chance for a shot at the title is one bout away. Morrison will take on another freshman phenom in Emilio Albanese from Emmaus who is now 38-4. Albanese has already knocked off Nicholas McGarrity who was 40-1 at the time and CD’s Thunder Beard in the quarters with an 8-3 decision. Morrison continues to win and has upped his first-season record to 45-2 here in Hershey.
CR North’s Eren Sement cruised to the semifinals, riding a nice win over Easton’s Chris Kelly by a major decision 11-0. He will look for his first finals appearance here at 127-pounds after finishing in third-place the last two seasons. #2 seed Sement will battle Daniel Boones’s Dean Houser in his semi duel, Houser was the #3 seed coming in after winning a South Central title. Chris Kelly from CB West floored the Giant Center with a defensive fall over undefeated, at the time, Brock Weiss from Jersey Shore advancing to the upset-minded bracket at 139-pounds. Hempfield senior Seamus Mack was upset in the first-round, Kelly will face top-seeded Maddox Shaw (Thomas Jefferson) in the semis.
As expected Quakertown’s Collin Gaj advanced to the semis with a major decision over a tough Griffin Walizer (Central Mountain) 13-4. He is headed for a rematch in the finals with his nemesis and former state champion Kollin Rath from Bethlehem Catholic if they both win in the semis.
Dreams of a gold disappeared for several key SOL grapplers in the quarters, as Pennridge’s Colby Martinelli (114), who was injured his match and may not return, both Q-town’s Mason Ziegler and CR South’s Luke Reitter at 121-pounds, Gavin Carroll (Q-town) at 145 and #1 seed at 172-pounds Bek Sadriddinov all lost and will head to their respective consolation brackets. Sam Kuhns (152) of Pennridge & Gavin Cole (160) from CRS also dropped their quarterfinal matches.
