TOWAMENCIN—After one quarter against Central Bucks South, host North Penn had 26 yards of total offense and no first downs.
No way that was going to continue for long. Midway through the second quarter, the Knights came to life.
North Penn scored three quick touchdowns in less than six minutes at the end of the first half and went on to a 31-14 Suburban One Continental victory at Crawford Stadium.
Senior wide receiver Ronnie Akins scored all three North Penn touchdowns during the second-quarter blitz.
Akins ran for an 11-yard touchdown with 6:24 left in the second quarter. He caught a 33-yard TD pass from Justin Davey with 1:48 remaining in the quarter, and caught a 15-yard TD pass with 34 seconds to go before halftime.
"We didn't get in the flow (in the first quarter)," Akins said. "In the second quarter, everybody started to get hyped. We started getting things done. We got into the game."
North Penn (4-0 overall, 1-0 SOL) had scoring drives of 76 yards, 73 yards and 10 yards in the second quarter, and Akins scored on each of his three touches.
"It was great," Akins said. "I was waiting for us to take over the game and put some points on the board."
Akins finished the night with four catches for 90 yards, 19 rushing yards and three touchdowns. On defense, he had an interception to halt a Titans drive and helped limit dangerous CB South receiver Mike Doty to 71 yards on five receptions.
"(CB South) has been successful throwing the ball," North Penn coach Dick Beck said. "We have a guy like Akins who can make a difference (on defense). One of the early keys was shutting down Doty."
North Penn running back Tyler Smith rushed for 177 yards on 15 carries and added three catches for 50 yards. Smith also had an interception to set up Akins' third touchdown.
Andrew Stoll ran for 34 yards on four carries and scored North Penn's final touchdown from one yard out in the third quarter. Davey completed nine of 14 passes for 154 yards and two TDs.
CB South played tough defense early and kept the game scoreless through much of the first half. But the Titans were unable to put points on the board despite good field position.
Although CB South (2-2 overall, 0-1 SOL) totaled 280 yards of offense, it averaged less than four yards per rushing attempts. Quarterback Tom Johns passed for 186 yards, but the Knights forced three turnovers.
"You have to make the most of your opportunities against good football teams," CB South coach Bart Szarko. "We did move the ball. We just didn't get any points. That shifts momentum. We need to be better and not turn the ball over in those situations."
CB South scored two late touchdowns. Johns threw a seven-yard scoring pass to junior receiver Chris Eberz on the second play of the fourth quarter and an 18-yard TD pass to junior receiver Jon Eisemann with about four minutes left in the game.
