Pennsbury seniors Jenna Allen and Melinda Feyko were recognized at a special signing ceremony on April 22, 2010, for signing letters of intent to play field hockey at the collegiate level.
Jenna Allen – Villanova University (Field Hockey)
Major: Liberal Arts
Final list of colleges: Villanova, West Chester, Lock Haven
Reasons for choosing Villanova: “I really liked that it was close to home, and I really felt welcome on the team. I just felt at home there.”
What was the progression that led to a field hockey scholarship? “Originally, I had decided that I did not want to play in college, but I just loved playing field hockey under coach (Brooke) Bergmann and coach (Tracey) Arndt. I couldn’t imagine my life without it, and I felt it was the next step after high school.”
Coach Brooke Bergmann says: “Jenna was one of our captains. Coming into this year, we knew we had talent. We just didn’t know how or if it was going to come together. From day one, she was one that immediately stood out.
“I think at the beginning of the year she wasn’t quite sure if she could play in college, which – looking back on the season – is ridiculous because she was a standout. She was always someone you noticed. Her competitiveness, her aggressiveness and her speed - that’s why she got the attention from schools. You can’t teach those things, and the coaches saw her as somebody who can come in and pick up a lot of the field hockey as she goes along and be able to play at a really high level. She’s an awesome kid. I’m so excited for her.”
Melinda Feyko – Sacred Heart University (Field Hockey)
Major: Elementary Education
Final list of colleges: Sacred Heart, East Stroudsburg, Gwynedd-Mercy
Reasons for choosing Sacred Heart: “The atmosphere of the campus – it’s a beautiful campus.”
When did you start seriously thinking about playing hockey at the collegiate level: “I probably started thinking about it in ninth grade. I played sports all my life, and to give it up wouldn’t be easy.
“It’s so exciting. I can’t wait – I just want to get started.”
Coach Brooke Bergmann says: “Melinda is like a little sparkplug. She is tiny, she’s always moving, and she is never afraid to throw her body into the fray. She is just so impressive in that way and has worked so hard to get better – doing everything she possibly can to improve her skills.
“She just loves field hockey and really wanted to continue her career. I think this is a really good match for her as far as the school and the field hockey program. She’ll have a chance to go in and make an impact. I’m just really proud of all the work she’s put in to get to this point.”
