On Feb. 15, 2011, Souderton senior Christian Benner was recognized at a special news conference for signing a letter of intent to play soccer at the collegiate level.
Christian Benner – West Chester University (Soccer)
Major: Business
Final list of colleges: West Chester, Arcadia, Eastern, Delaware, Messiah
Reasons for choosing West Chester: “One of the big reasons I chose West Chester is they have a really strong community there and, also, my sister goes there. I feel that it’s the best opportunity for me.”
What was the college recruiting process like for you? “My brother and my cousins all went through the recruiting process, and because of them, it made it a lot easier for me. Right from the get-go, I knew I wanted to go to a college where I would have an opportunity to win and have a good time doing it.
“In the beginning, it was a little stressful because you had to e-mail coaches to try and get them to come out and actually see you. At the end when I finally committed – I could really tell how much stress it was for me because it went away and was all gone after that.”
Coach Tom Quintois says: “First of all, he picked a really good school – the right fit. He’ll be playing for a coach that is very skill-oriented, very technically-oriented. Christian is that – he’s a really skilled player and gifted athletically. He picked the right place, and he’s going to do really well there. We have put a lot of kids there over the years, and he fits the West Chester mold.
“He’s skilled – he can dribble, he can pass, he can shoot. He’s pretty fast, and he plays bigger than his size. He’s got a lot of the intangibles. He understands the game really well. When you get a competitive guy with that kind of skill and ability and surround him with good players, he’s going to fit real well there.”
