On Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012, Souderton seniors Kate Sassa and Gunner Bergey were recognized at a special news conference for signing letters of intent to compete in their respective sports at the collegiate level.
Kate Sassa – Towson University (Gymnastics)
Major: Undecided
Final list of colleges: Towson, George Washington
Reasons for choosing Towson: “I chose Towson because I really liked the campus. It was a nice size. I also liked the coaches, and the team was really nice.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in gymnastics at the collegiate level? “I have been doing gymnastics since I was six, and I kind of always knew I wanted to do it in college, probably since sixth or seventh grade.”

Gunner Bergey – Lees McCrae College (Cycling)
Major: Undecided
Final list of colleges: Lees McCrae, University of Colorado
Reasons for choosing Lees McCrae: “I chose to go there because when I went down for a visit I met the coach, and it was really cool – it’s right in the mountains, and it fits me well. They have small classes. I met the team in Wisconsin last winter, and I just thought it was a good fit for me.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in cycling at the collegiate level? “I started riding when I was little, and as I got more and more serious, I knew a couple of friends who started racing collegiately. I thought it might be something I would like to do, so I went down and checked out the college. I’m really excited.”
