Bergey’s Buick GMC
SOL SHSHL Player of the Week
This recognition is sponsored by Bergey’s Buick GMC. Athletes are chosen based on nomination of coaches, and the recipient must be a positive presence on the ice and a credit to the game. Consideration also is given to the student-athlete’s standing in the school and community.
Michael Samson – Senior at Central Bucks West High School
A three-year varsity player, the senior forward was named a captain. Samson has four goals and two assists and is a team player first and foremost. He has been part of West’s program for seven years. An excellent student, he has his sights set on someday flying fighter jets in the Navy.
Note from the coach:
“Michael has been on our varsity team since he was a sophomore,” coach Dave Baun said. “He’s everything we look for in a student-athlete at CB West. He’s an excellent student and a committed hockey player. In addition to playing hockey, Michael is a very talented runner and lacrosse player. He was one of the top finishers in the Suburban League cross-country championship and ran at States. Cross-country is a sport made of dedication and Michael has brought that same level of commitment to our hockey team.
“He’s easily recognizable as a great skater and he works hard in every practice and every game. It’s why the coaches unanimously selected him as one of our team captains. Just reading his answers to the SOL questionnaire gives you an idea of Michael’s personality and intelligence; his favorite high school hockey moment was a teammate’s success and I had to Google half the people he wanted to have dinner with. Getting to coach kids like Michael is what makes doing this such a great thing.”
About Michael:
Best memory playing high school hockey: Playing against CB East my freshman year. We went very deep into a shootout and then Griffin Shields scored the game-winner, and our bench and fans went crazy.
Part of the game I enjoy most: I enjoy the speed and skill of the game. I love watching fast and talented players undress the defense and make filthy highlights.
How did you get involved in hockey? My dad played in high school, and I would watch his alumni games. Eventually, I asked if I could play too.
My role model is: Louis Zamperini
Music on iPod: Classic Rock
Favorite food: Steak and broccoli
Favorite class: Macro Economics
Future plans: Either join ROTC at a civilian college or attend a service academy. After I graduate, I would like to fly fighter jets in the Navy.
Four people I’d invite to a dinner party: Elon Musk, Bill Bowerman, Manfred Von Richthofen, Muhammed Ali
