Bucks-Mont showed its resiliency in Wednesday’s opening game of Carpenter Cup play at FDU Park, twice rallying from deficits to earn the win.

Chester County took a 2-0 lead in the first inning only to watch Bucks-Mont knot the score in the fourth inning. Bucks-Mont trailed 3-2 after six innings but scored three runs in the top of the seventh to go on top and then held on for the one-run win.

“It’s always a great experience for these guys to get together and play on the same team with some of their in-season rivals,” said PW coach Chris Manero, head coach of the Bucks-Mont squad. “We don’t really get a chance to practice, but to see them mesh so well together and support each other is just really good for baseball.”

Players from a long list of SOL schools contributed to the come-from-behind win. CB South’s Owen Petrich led off the fourth with a double to right center. Two outs later, Quakertown’s Justin Butler delivered an RBI single. North Penn’s RJ Agriss followed with a single, and Butler scored on a single by Carter Hinds, knotting the score 2-2.

Chester County regained the lead with a run in the sixth, but Bucks-Mont erased that deficit with a three-run seventh. Hatboro-Horsham’s Trey Porter drew a walk to lead off the frame. One out later, Upper Dublin’s Leo Soriano singled. Hatboro-Horsham’s Nate Katherine – a late addition to the roster - followed with an RBI single to knot the score.

“Nate Katherine was a late replacement on the roster last night because one of our players got hurt in his legion game,” Manero said. “Nick ended up getting a big RBI for us late in the game. It is always exciting to see that happen.”

Soriano scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch, and after Butler drew a walk, Katherine raced home on a wild pitch, giving Bucks-Mont a 5-3 lead. Chester County scored an unearned run in the top of the ninth, but with the bases loaded and one out, Bucks-Mont turned a double play to close out the win in dramatic fashion.

Wissahickon’s Nate DeVincent notched the win, allowing one hit in a scoreless seventh. Plymouth Whitemarsh’s Joe Rauscher did not allow a hit in a scoreless eighth, striking out a pair. Upper Dublin’s Tristan Cairnes allowed two hits and an unearned run in the ninth, striking out one.

Upper Moreland Greg Wiley earned the starting nod, allowing three hits and two runs (one earned) in two innings while fanning three. Wissahickon’s Ben Junker threw two scoreless innings, allowing two hits while striking out two and walking one. PW’s Alex Wilkie-Viscio threw two innings, allowing three hits and one run while striking out one.

Our pitchers did a real nice job of throwing strikes, mixing up their pitches, and not giving anything away,” Manero said. “It isn't easy to face a full lineup of all-star caliber hitters, but they all handled that challenge very well today.

“Nate Devincent, Joe Rauscher, and Tristan Cairnes worked three big shutdown innings to hold the lead after we went ahead in the seventh.”

Bucks-Mont will face Tri-Cape on Friday at 10:30 a.m. The winner will advance to Monday’s semifinals at Citizens Bank Park.
