FRANCONIA – The post game team huddle was brief. There wasn’t too much to say.

Souderton had been beaten – for the third time in as many weeks – by Roman Catholic, 27-7. This setback followed decisive losses to Neshaminy (35-6) and Downingtown East (29-7).

But there is no crying in football – not tonight.

“The optimist in me says that we are still 0-0 in league play, and I really think that this difficult nonleague schedule will help us get ready for the league,” said Souderton coach Ed Gallagher. “We have some winnable games coming up, and when we get some of our players back we should be competitive.”

“All three of these teams that we played are great football teams,” said Souderton running back Clint Passarella who scored on a 5-yard TD pass from Connor Brokenshire late in the game to avert a shutout. “The experience of playing these teams will make us better.”

“No question that this will prepare us for our league,” said Souderton junior Joe Stolfi who excelled on the both the offensive and defensive line. “We still have a shot to do well in our league, and if we can execute better we should be fine.”

Injuries and suspensions have claimed most of the Souderton backfield, and it has been on the offensive side of the line of scrimmage that the Indians have struggled the most.

“We gave effort, and I thought we took much better care of the football than we did last week,” said Gallagher in reference to the eight Souderton fumbles against Downingtown East. “We were in the right places to make plays, but we didn’t tackle well at times (on defense), and we didn’t make plays when the ball was in the air (on offense).”

Roman scored on its first possession of the game and never looked back. The Cahillites took advantage of great field position and scored on a 32-yard drive that took five plays. Dennis Regan – who led Roman in rushing with 60 yards - scored on a three-yard run.

Roman Catholic also scored on its second possession moving 61 yards 10 plays. The scoring play was a 31-yard screen pass from Kevin Regan to Christian Seagrave.

“We knew the play was coming, and the players were prepared for it,” said Gallagher. “But we didn’t make a tackle, and that play really hurt us.”

After a scoreless third period, Roman scored twice in a three-minute span in the fourth period to ice the win. Dennis Regan scored twice – once on a three-yard run and again on a 23-yard TD pass from brother Kevin.

“I thought the drive at the end of the game will help us get ready to play CB West next week,” said Gallagher. “Roman still had its first team defense in the game, and we finally put together a drive and put some points on the board.”

The Big Red opened the drive at its own 26-yard line and scored 15 plays later on the Brokesnhire-to-Passarella TD pass.

The highlights of the drive included a 13-yard pass from Brokenshire to sophomore Tyler Sholl – an 8-yard run by Sholl – a 14-yard pass from Brokenshire to Peter Jenne – a 9-yard run by Passarella – and the scoring pass with 12 seconds left in the game.

“No question that this is a difficult way to start the season,” said Gallagher. “But I really feel we are going to win some football games in our league. And I know the players feel that way too.”

Extra Points: The last time that Souderton lost three straight games was in 2003 when the Big Red was winless for the season….Souderton followed with winning seasons in 2004 (8-3), 2005 (9-3), 2006 (9-3), and 2007 (9-2)… The Indians – despite a trip to the PIAA District One Playoffs last year – finished 5-6.
