Carangi & Vitelli Named All-State

North Penn junior Sam Carangi and CB South senior Jordan Vitelli were named to the 2016 PA Sports Writers All-State second team.

Central Bucks South senior Jordan Vitelli and North Penn junior Sam Carangi joined the state’s elite with their selection to the 2016 PA Sports Writers Class AAAA All-State second team. Both played major roles in the success of their respective squads, and both are committed to play at the collegiate level. Carangi made a verbal commitment to Villanova University last August while Vitelli made a verbal commitment to the University of the Sciences on Sunday after competing in the 29th Annual All-Star Labor Classic at new Foundations Charter High School.

A four-year varsity player, Vitelli leaves South as the program’s all-time female scoring leader with 1,048 points. She is just the second female in program history to surpass the 1,000-point milestone. As a senior, Vitelli scored 449 points, averaging 15.5 per game. An 87 percent foul shooter, the two-year captain and team MVP connected on 45 percent of her shots from beyond the arc (74-of-166). She also had 120 rebounds, 65 steals, 55 assists and 10 charges taken.

“I think it is just a tribute to Jordan’s work ethic and dedication and to her skill level that she was named to this team,” South coach Beth Mattern said. “She’s also such a true team player that I know her teammates are all so excited for her. Everyone recognizes how much she deserves it.

“As far as the program, it’s just another thing for the season that put us on the map a little bit more – that we really want to not just compete in the District One field but really try and keep moving forward. Jordan definitely did a lot in four years to do that.”

A three-time first team All-SOL Continental Conference selection, Vitelli was the catalyst to a postseason run that saw Titans finish third in District One AAAA, earning the first state berth and state win in program history.

“It’s hard to put into words what Jordan has meant to our program because she does so many intangibles so well,” Mattern said. “When I look at her stats for the year - if she’s not at the top, she’s in the top two or three for every category that we keep stats on, not even including being the first to dive on the floor.

“She does so many things to help make our team better that sometimes go unnoticed, and she just shot the ball incredible all year, which was just icing on the cake as far as I’m concerned.”

Carangi was the point guard of a Lady Knight squad that rolled through the SOL National Conference without a loss and earned the top seed for the District One AAAA Tournament. A first team All-SOL Continental Conference selection, Carangi was a team captain as both a sophomore and junior. The junior point guard averaged 10.13 point, 3.53 rebounds, 3.13 assists and 2.25 steals. She finished the season with 55 three-pointers for a North Penn squad that advanced to the state semifinals and finished with 29 wins.

“Sam does a good job of running the point and scoring,” coach Maggie deMarteleire said. “There’s a fine line between shooting too much and being a scorer and also being a point guard, and she does a nice job with that.

“She can fill up a stat sheet. She always has a lot of assists, she has steals, and she can rebound. She just does a lot of positive things, and she makes her teammates better. She is a good teammate.”

It is the first selection to the all-state squad for both players. Also representing District One on the all-state squad were Downingtown East senior Paige Warfel (second team), Perkiomen Valley senior K.T. Armstrong (third team) and Conestoga senior Ellie Mack (third team). Cardinal O’Hara junior Mary Sheehan (first team) and junior Hannah Nihill (second team) represented District 12.
